Saturday may have seen the eight home teams scored 25 goals between them, but yesterday saw the two remaining hosts fire blanks. Fernando Torres’ Chelsea debut failed to live up to the hype as the Liverpool revival continues to gather speed, and Birmingham climb out of the drop zone with a crucial bottom-of-the-table win at Upton Park.

With Obafemi Martins still awaiting visa clearance, Alex McLeish named an unchanged side from the starting XI that drew at home with Man City in midweek, as Nikola Zigic partnered Cameron Jerome up front in a 4-4-2 for Birmingham. Martin Jiranek again stepped in at centre half alongside Roger Johnson (who grabbed the maximum 3 Bonus Points) and the Blues showed their steely side in picking up a vital 1-0 win. This was their first clean sheet in ten league games and will surely spark more transfers-in for Birmingham defensive options ahead of double game week 27, where they host (STK, NEW) at St Andrews.

Zigic was awarded 2 Bonus Points ans it seems he is finally starting to find his feet at Birmingham, though a look at his stats suggests any criticism has been a tad over-excessive. He has played 90 minutes on just 7 occasions for McLeish’s side and has returned 4 goals and 2 assists in those games. It seems that if Big Eck keeps him on the pitch, he’s likely to get amongst the points.

On the back of their 3-1 victory at Bloomfield Road, West Ham, understandably, came into the Upton Park encounter on a high. Following their Carling Cup semi final exit to the same opponents, this was a chance for vengeance for Avram Grant’s side and with five goals in their last two league games, the Hammers were a team on form, with Victor Obinna, in particular, looking full of goals. Both sides started the game in the bottom three but, try as they may, the home team couldn’t break down the Birmingham rearguard and despite their embarrassment of riches up front, West Ham remain firmly in a relegation dog-fight, as Avram Grant suffered a not-so-happy birthday.

The Hammers also have injury concerns following yesterday’s game. Both Robbie Keane and James Tomkins sustained calf problems and both have withdrawn from their respective squads for this week’s internationals. Tomkins was injured in the warm-up for the game, while Keane was forced off with his injury. Matt Upson is also crocked again – he had to be subbed in the second-half with an achilles tendonitis problem. All three will be doubts for West Ham’s now crucial trip to West Brom in Gameweek 27.

Liverpool clearly forgot to read the script at Stamford Bridge, as the 1-0 triumph stretched their winning run to four consecutive games. Kenny Dalglish welcomed back Jamie Carragher to the heart of the Reds’ defence and continued with the formation previewed in the recent home win over Stoke, which gives defensive solidity, with three central defenders flanked by two wing-backs. Liverpool have also picked up four clean sheets in a row, a sign of their recent resilience, and are only six points off the Champions League places now.

Raul Meireles once again found the net for Liverpool making it four goals in his last five appearances, and looks an altogether different prospect to the player he was under Roy Hodgson. Dalglish kept new boy Luis Suarez on the bench, with Dirk Kuyt toiling away up front on his own. Steven Gerrard grabbed the maximum 3 Bonus Points, with Carragher on 2 and Meireles on 1, making it 9 in his last 5 games.

Steven Gerrard picked up a groin injury in yesterday’s game and has been withdrawn from England’s squad for the friendly with Denmark on Wednesday. Right now, we’ve no reason to suspect that this is any more than a precaution but Gerrard must be considered a doubt for Liverpool’s home clash with Wigan in Gameweek 27 at this stage.

Chelsea’s diamond formation worked a treat at Sunderland in midweek but failed miserably against a resilient Liverpool, as the record-breaking week ended in something of an anti-climax for the champions. Nicolas Anelka played in the hole behind Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba but Chelsea lacked any real cohesiveness and there was no surprise when Torres was subbed not long after the hour mark.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side reverted to 4-3-3 upon Torrres’ departure and despite throwing on the likes of Florent Malouda and other new signing David Luiz, the Italian’s attempts were in vain. Like Liverpool, Chelsea came into this game having won three games on the trot but the acquisition of Torres looks like posing questions as to what the side’s ideal formation and personnel will be.

    Nice article Sir p,
Would apreciate some advice off anyone
I have barton, and i am thinkning about benching Nani and putting him in just for the dgw.
Barton is generaly involved with most surges forward and he is on penaltys, undoubtedly he is a knobber but the man has got skills.
Where as nani is quality but whenmatches happen between the big boys there is normaly loads of build up then nothing realy happens, however , if something does happen then he is likely to be involved
    arrrgghhh help!

Quick question, which team do you think is better:-

    1)
    Foster, Begovic
    Coleman, Huth, Kolorov, Rafeal, Kelly,
    VDV, Fab, Nani, Adam, Barton,
    Berb, Tevez, RVP

    2)
    Foster, Begovic
    Coleman, Simpson, Kolorov, Rafeal, Kelly,
    VDV, Fab, Nani, Adam, Morrison,
    Rooney, Tevez, RVP

    Carr Vidic Simpson

    Fabregas Lennon Etherington Adam

    RVP Odiwinge

    Begovic Nani Foley Coleman

Can use my 1 free transfer to get 11 men out for GW28 (but with no subs playing)

Annoying.. was all set-up for the DGW, just needed a 4 point hit to bring in R Johnson and Nolan, and then make the decision of who to bench between Nani and Tevez.

Now Djourou and VDV looking likely to miss at least one game of their respective DGWs..

I'd planned on using my original wildcard to re-balance my team after this DGW, but if those injuries are confirmed I'll be tempted to use it this week to make the most of the double.

I guess a fair few will be sweating on Djourou and VDV - just a case of sit tight for now?

If I assume the worst (i.e. that VDV and Djourou miss out) then I'll have 5 as we stand. Had planned a 4 point hit for 2 more.

Just aware that most of my rivals are planning their WC this week so if I don't maximise the DGW potential, I could lose ground!

Yep that could work - I'd definitely go Huth of those two since he seems to have the goalscoring instinct, and I don't think there are any clean sheet points to be had for Stoke this DGW.

I wouldn't do that if it involves a points hit though. I'm just thinking that City could well just park the bus against United, giving us a bore draw and CS..

True. I could get Roger in (for Evra) and sell fabs for T.Cahill gw28 ahead of EVE dbl.

Thats would leave me 4 non playing players on bench for gw 28 (Foster, vdv, RJ, RVP)

I like that it's different from most that I've seen - but I don't think Baines is worth the extra over Coleman. Save money there and upgrade Doyle? Or maybe upgrade Etherington to Walcott if possible?

Not so sure that three Brum defenders is a good idea ahead of GW28 either. Simpson instead of Carr?

too much money in keepers, combined they shouldnt total more than 10 million, 10.5 if you have a 6.5 or more 1st keeper. Downgrade VDS and upgrade Doyle IMO.

okay guys trying to figure out if a 4 point hit to do berbs to bent is worth it this week, it would mean cahill drops to my bench this gw.

    So basically it's....

    cahill (gw27-bol), berbs (gw28-wig)

    vs

    bent (gw27-blp, gw28-BLA) - 4 points.

    thoughts?

Lads this GW is over lets think about the next one: the biggest or second biggest double GW, time will tell.

I need opinion who do we think is gonna bring more points:
    a: Kelly WIG, @Wham or,
b: Simpson @ Bla, @ Bir, BOL and why?

Simpson clearly has the fixtures on his side but Liv performance has made me think twice. 4 in row, away at Wolves, Che they've made CS's and if Kenny persist with that defensive formation I see plenty of CS's for Liv never mind the fixtures. Kelly is also kind of a OOP. New on the other side had more CS's away from home and now without strikers they will play 4 - 5 - 1 also potential for a CS, so they maybe will nick one in the double.

I am trying to find a space for R.J. BTW.

    Cheers,

I'd go Kelly. Liverpool are looking strong at the back and Kelly is putting some good crosses in.

Newcastle shipped 4 in 28 minutes, OK it was Arsenal but that isn't the hallmark of a solid defence.

This is one of those 'beware the lure of DGW' situations I think - I'd be playing Kelly.

I think here we are on something but it seems little bit weird to sell a double GW defender. Plus I feel that my defense is really strong and I will have benching headaches almost every GW. That means Simpson will do the job as a 3 sub till the end for 3.9m.

          Arhhhh....

referenced this conundrum above, in the same boat, have both already, not looking ahead to GW28. Still think Im going to go simpson.

Likely bad scenario: Simpson 4pts, Kelly 6pts

Likely good scenario: Simpson 8 pts, Kelly 2pts.

id rather gamble on netting 6 points for the sake of losing 2 points. Make sense?

Simpson could end up with less than 4 and Kelly more than 6, but I wouldnt bet on it

2 from Stoke in the back "7". Shasney and Bergovic rotate well.

Apart from Barton, the rest look fine. I think the question you have to ask is, do you hang onto VDV and miss the dgw/blank g28 or sell for Cahill, Brunt, et al?

12 gwks to go and ground to make up on the 24ers so you need to maximise returns this dgw.

I think you can get away with three from ARS provided you pick Shasney. He can then sit on the bench whilst Bergovic plays 28.

If you have sold VDV, your bench for 28 will then have something like 2 x ARS and 1 x BIR.

      Do-able.

It's not 100% guaranteed to be accurate. Protection is just their best guess because it's a hidden thing on FPL.

Huth went up while 'protected' so maybe the FPL protection runs out at midnight and then they can change price at 1am but the TFPL doesn't have their 'protected' status updated in that time between as it's late at night.

They aren't really protected unless they are new to the FPL though. Keane and Torres both changed price with the 'protection' label on them. Suarez didn't though.

anytime a player is flagged, even if they dont miss gametime, they are possibly protected. When you see protection, it isnt a guarantee. But there seems to be no exact science to it. For example with adam, he was flagged going into this last game, but he wound up playing, there really is no reason to get protected. Yet he is and his price didnt go up last night despite reaching the 100% threshold. Which on a personal note pisses me off.

Once your wildcard is activated, all of your transfers before the next deadline are free, so you won't lose any points.

my arrow was greener than Kermit the Frogs taint!!!! (yeah i used that before and will continue to do so) 10 goals in my squad, still not enough to reach 100 points. If i dont get 100 for GW27, it aint ever gonna happen.

But enough with the small talk. Whats for lunch? Im starvin'
