Saturday may have seen the eight home teams scored 25 goals between them, but yesterday saw the two remaining hosts fire blanks. Fernando Torres’ Chelsea debut failed to live up to the hype as the Liverpool revival continues to gather speed, and Birmingham climb out of the drop zone with a crucial bottom-of-the-table win at Upton Park.

With Obafemi Martins still awaiting visa clearance, Alex McLeish named an unchanged side from the starting XI that drew at home with Man City in midweek, as Nikola Zigic partnered Cameron Jerome up front in a 4-4-2 for Birmingham. Martin Jiranek again stepped in at centre half alongside Roger Johnson (who grabbed the maximum 3 Bonus Points) and the Blues showed their steely side in picking up a vital 1-0 win. This was their first clean sheet in ten league games and will surely spark more transfers-in for Birmingham defensive options ahead of double game week 27, where they host (STK, NEW) at St Andrews.

Zigic was awarded 2 Bonus Points ans it seems he is finally starting to find his feet at Birmingham, though a look at his stats suggests any criticism has been a tad over-excessive. He has played 90 minutes on just 7 occasions for McLeish’s side and has returned 4 goals and 2 assists in those games. It seems that if Big Eck keeps him on the pitch, he’s likely to get amongst the points.

On the back of their 3-1 victory at Bloomfield Road, West Ham, understandably, came into the Upton Park encounter on a high. Following their Carling Cup semi final exit to the same opponents, this was a chance for vengeance for Avram Grant’s side and with five goals in their last two league games, the Hammers were a team on form, with Victor Obinna, in particular, looking full of goals. Both sides started the game in the bottom three but, try as they may, the home team couldn’t break down the Birmingham rearguard and despite their embarrassment of riches up front, West Ham remain firmly in a relegation dog-fight, as Avram Grant suffered a not-so-happy birthday.

The Hammers also have injury concerns following yesterday’s game. Both Robbie Keane and James Tomkins sustained calf problems and both have withdrawn from their respective squads for this week’s internationals. Tomkins was injured in the warm-up for the game, while Keane was forced off with his injury. Matt Upson is also crocked again – he had to be subbed in the second-half with an achilles tendonitis problem. All three will be doubts for West Ham’s now crucial trip to West Brom in Gameweek 27.

Liverpool clearly forgot to read the script at Stamford Bridge, as the 1-0 triumph stretched their winning run to four consecutive games. Kenny Dalglish welcomed back Jamie Carragher to the heart of the Reds’ defence and continued with the formation previewed in the recent home win over Stoke, which gives defensive solidity, with three central defenders flanked by two wing-backs. Liverpool have also picked up four clean sheets in a row, a sign of their recent resilience, and are only six points off the Champions League places now.

Raul Meireles once again found the net for Liverpool making it four goals in his last five appearances, and looks an altogether different prospect to the player he was under Roy Hodgson. Dalglish kept new boy Luis Suarez on the bench, with Dirk Kuyt toiling away up front on his own. Steven Gerrard grabbed the maximum 3 Bonus Points, with Carragher on 2 and Meireles on 1, making it 9 in his last 5 games.

Steven Gerrard picked up a groin injury in yesterday’s game and has been withdrawn from England’s squad for the friendly with Denmark on Wednesday. Right now, we’ve no reason to suspect that this is any more than a precaution but Gerrard must be considered a doubt for Liverpool’s home clash with Wigan in Gameweek 27 at this stage.

Chelsea’s diamond formation worked a treat at Sunderland in midweek but failed miserably against a resilient Liverpool, as the record-breaking week ended in something of an anti-climax for the champions. Nicolas Anelka played in the hole behind Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba but Chelsea lacked any real cohesiveness and there was no surprise when Torres was subbed not long after the hour mark.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side reverted to 4-3-3 upon Torrres’ departure and despite throwing on the likes of Florent Malouda and other new signing David Luiz, the Italian’s attempts were in vain. Like Liverpool, Chelsea came into this game having won three games on the trot but the acquisition of Torres looks like posing questions as to what the side’s ideal formation and personnel will be.

Well, you can get Djourou out now, poss for a DGWer, but if you're smart you'll have saved up 2 transfers for 28.

Nice team. If you transfer out Djourou and Murphy by then, then you can bench VDV, Fabregas and Van Persie in GW28, and still field 11 players.

Even worse tactics to then take him off, and so giving the Liverpool fans exactly what they wanted.

Torres looked incredibly nervous, although that was just probably because he was worried about being hit by a brick or a seat.

What has happened to Essien, si?! He used to be one of the best midfielders in the world but has been a nothing player for months now... We badly missed Ramires in midfield yesterday.

Oh, and Darren Fletcher is my least favourite. He's a seriously nasty piece of work.

I tried to make that point about Ramires all night yesterday but didn't get any support. He naturally adds that drive and ball movement in midfield that you can't get from most players.

Agreed. You were so right about him and I was so wrong!

I think Mikel's booking after 3 seconds restricted the team a bit. It meant that Essien and the full backs couldn't push on too much or else we'd have been very vulnerable on the counter attack with just two CBs and a booked Mikel left to defend.

Essien and Lampard both looked very ordinary. Essien has been mediocre all season. Very worrying. He is employed in a reasonably attacking role but he is just offering nothing going forward.

My Essien first scorer bet looks even more mediocre.

2 free transfers this week. Was originally planning to just do:

Can't quite afford Walcott (by like .2).
The plan was to do Zogs > Bentley/Barton/Nolan this week but Djorou and VDV's injuries mean that that might not be as good of a move.
Unless I do Hangeland > Huth (Or another 5.5 or less defender) and Zogs > Walcott but thats an 8 pt hit and leaves me with 5 people not playing the following week.

r johnson has DGW this week, nothing next, then another DGW.

rafael has MCY this week, a DGW next week (which might change anyway) then LIV (A)

Seems like the right time to get on the Kolarov train, would give you some City attacking coverage too.

If you want a doubler Huth is the best option - even if it feels like you're just chasing points.

I don;t think we will be any closer to knowing about VDV's injury all week. I'm tempted to bench him. Its either him or Tevez or Nani. This is a tough week for decisions. I still can't bring myself to bench Tevez. My balls are simply not big enough.

    My current team is:

    Sczczeny/Al-Habsi

    R Johnson/Hangeland/Samba/Coleman/Elmohamady

    Nani/Fabregas/Adam/VDV/Nolan

    RVP/Berbatov/Vela

I have 2 transfers available to me this week. But I’m not opposed to using points to get another one.

Given the injuries (VDV doubtful) and that Wenger may rotate his squad, what are your suggestions?

I wanted to get Koscielny is as he’s probably going to play both games (especially if Djourou has a knock). . . but would have to sacrifice one of the other gooners in the team i.e. RVP or Fabs

I was also considering Dawson from Spurs.

    Thoughts please?

Wouldn't bother with Koscielny as majority of Arsenal's CS have come when Djourou has played this season - look what happended when he went off injured on Saturday! Certainly not worth it for Fabs or RVP!

Perhaps Hangeland to Huth. Also don't like Nolan with Barton now on Pens and no Carroll for knock-downs to feed off of. Perhaps consider Barton/Brunt/Thomas.

Lost my H2H by 1point when Lolarov had his second assist taken away. I hadn’t seen the incident but was ready to kick off given they have allowed some shocking assists to stand this season and not awarded others. But after I watched it last night and saw it wasn’t actually him I resigned myself to defeat!

On another matter, I had initially thought Kevin Nolan as a pretty good option for the double gameweek. However, with the penalties now seemingly taken off him, Barton seems like a stronger option now. Obviously Nolan could still do well but I just wondered other peoples thoughts on the matter. I don’t recall Nolan missing a penalty so not really sure why he is not on them now. He has taken them with Barton on the pitch before, it is a strange one.

Horrible isn't it. You almost want him to miss so that he learns to take them properly! I remember when he took a couple for Citeh he just sprinted up to the ball and marmalised it down the middle. At least if you miss when you blast it you've given it some.

It is a strange one, there was no publicised reason for Nolan to be taken off them, however I can't argue with Barton taking them given the result. 🙂
I think Newcastle could shift their formation again in light of all the mounting striker injuries, expect to see Nolan deeper in a 4-4-2. However if Lovenkrands, Best or Ranger get injured we could see him pushed up into either an OOP makeshift striker or behind the front man like he was at the start of the season in a 4-5-1.
Short term I would pick Joey Barton, but keep an eye on the shifting styles at Newcastle - if Nolan ends up OOP he'd be worth getting.

Cheers Attila! Thats what worries with the possibility of ditching Nolan already because he may be right up there in the 4-5-1. And hes always goalhanging at corners so could get the touch there.

Plus, he has the single most annoying/pathetic goal celebration around so he is bound to rub it in if I sell him.

haha- no I havent Jesters in Southampton or south africa, but they obv had the same idea.

yeah, the The Juice Moose could work Atilla. (it would prob be called the moose for short)

I dont think people really go in for juice bars/ smoothies in UK, they seem a rip off - that'll be £4.50 for a litre of blended frozen blackberries. i may be out of touch though

          +1

Just make sure your juice bar sell healthy food so that you can use the words "melons, buns, breasts, nuts," etc
          on your menu.

It just means Dowd was being a crap ref of his own accord, rather than getting paid for it. 😉

I'm glad someone else finally agrees with me about that Barton tackle too.

Should be held up as an example on how to tackle properly. Brilliant challenge.

Are you kidding me MMW?! If his foot was any lower he'd have hit magma. Brilliant challenge that he was 100% entitled to go in for.

You not playing for team value, but for points. Djourou obv has to go. Get huth.

Can't imagine why you would consider selling rvp?...

Bench vdv if it breaks your heart to sell him. I can see Walcot/Arshavin scoring big in the double.

tks! so djorou is defintely sidelined? so no more cleansheets for arsenal...

i didn't conseider selling rvp, this are just the three players I would loose massive money if i sold them...

Djourou to Huth? Gives you a DGWer with goal threat and the extra player you need for GW28.
