Gameweek 26 saw 256 fantasy managers battle it out in the first round of the Members Paddy Power Cup. With scores spanning a range of 78 points and an incredible average score of 75, heavy defeats were the order of the round, and ties decided by the slightest of margins evoked more heartbreak than normal. To see the full list of results click here, for a brief round-up of the highs and lows of the first round read on…

We had a total of nine centurions in the round, with Mark on the end of an absolute tonking from one of them:

  1. Civan 103 – 52 Mike
  2. Dick Fran Dyke 101 – 40 Ham
  3. Goose 104 – 66 CROUCHINHO
  4. Walky Talky 100 – 75 Chuckie
  5. stebwfc 107 – 86 alex234
  6. RafaMC 108 – 47 Mark
  7. Aldershot Rejects 102 – 78 AliMcGlashan
  8. fiacloir 105 – 85 Jimmers
  9. xabi_14 100 – 86 n1jimmy

Although achieving the top score in the round, RafaMC didn’t  inflict the heaviest defeat on poor Mark. That title goes to Cesc no Drogs who put the lowest scorer of the round, NuttyWutty, to the sword 93 – 30, putting a whopping 63 points between them. The fifth fixture on that list between stebwfc and alex234 was the highest aggregate scoring match-up of the round.

Drubbings aside, and there were six fixtures decided by just a single point. MagNanimous, biegs, Gavin, Boofstein, Dangeroussnails and Write Home, edged out bantamstu, Peter, kieran0426, Johnny Unitas, fudokung and Attila the Bum respectively.

Closer still was trisonetwo‘s 86 – 86 draw with tomcon, with the former advancing thanks to his superior overall rank.

The luckiest manager of the round is probably Geraldo1977, who squeezed into the second round with the lowest score good enough to get a win, as he saw off the aptly-named Cannon Fodder, 54 – 50.

At the other end of that spectrum, was Zizo and soulman27, who must bemused as to how they haven’t made the next round after losing 95 – 90 to Vanilla Kush F.C. and 94 – 90 to our very own Granville, respectively.

Although I think another extremely unlucky manager was Akers, who lost to pompeyfan somehow.

Congratulations to the 128 fantasy mangers progressing to the second round. The fixtures for the next stage will be announced in an article at the end of the week.

The prizes for the competition, provided by Paddy Power, are a free £150 bet for the winner, £75 for the runner-up and £50 for third place.

Did my wildcard on Saturday so have made a couple of 0.1's here and there. Also been chopping and changing my team:

    Szczesny
    Kelly / Huth / Coleman
    Adam / Fabregas (c) / Lennon / Barton
    RVP / Odemwingie / Tevez

    Harper / Nani / Vidic / Kolarov

I've got 2.4 in the bank and not sure if I want to trade out Tevez for a doubler or keep him in. I've got 8 playing in the DGW.

Then in GW28, I'll trade out Lennon for Cahill:

    Harper
    Vidic / Coleman / Kolarov / Kelly
    Adam / Nani / Cahill / Barton
    Tevez / Odemwingie

    Szczesny / Huth / RVP / Fabregas

I think I'm going to have to have 5 defenders in GW 28 but 4 of them will be playing at home, just Kelly away to West Ham.

          My two penn'orth on VDV.

If he's available for the Blackpool game I think Harry will play him. For one thing, he's not as much of a rotator as some other managers and for another Spurs are in with a great chance of finishing fourth.

yes, I made it.. My opponent one defender not playing and had 9 points on one player (midfielder) on the bench, but his other 2 defenders on the bench where wounded/did not play, so he did not get those points. (I won by 5 points) 🙂

With Djourou out and VDV likely to be out, I have a dilemma.

Any transfer suggestions? This is what I would have gone for:

    Foster (Begovic)
    Simpson Kelly Djourou (Kolarov Coleman)
    Bentley Nani Adam VDV Fabregas
    Odem RVP (Tevez)

    Bank: 2.9

Make your subs Coleman, Tevez and Kolarov, that will ensure you have cover.

But if you want some doubles, then maybe VDV to Nolan? Or Cahill if you don't want any doubles.

And for Doujou, if you have teh money then upgrade to Sagna?

However, I wouldn't take any hits for any of the above suggestions

Cahill is in my plans to come in GW28, so if VDV was to go, I think it would be Cahill who would come in.

I think Doujou out this week and Cahill in next week would be a good idea. I'm probably best leaving it until later in the week anyway and see what the news is with VDV.

I've got rid of both already, with wildcards about, they could drop in price especially VDV.

Also, I've been stung a couple of times already with keeping injured players that my new rule is to get rid ASAP. I did it with Carrol and has paid off.

VDV may play, or Wenger maybe playing games with Doujou, but at least I don't have to worry about them and Doujou -> Kelly and VDV -> Bentley -> Cahill, make sense to me.

celanies, plus goals. I brought him in last week (obviously he did well reasoning was that he is teh focus point for all set pieces, which is why he has score 5 goals this season. Makes sence for teh double and the two fixtures after and then get rid.

Wouldn't pick Jara - unlikely to get anything but appearance points, likely to lose some of those for conceding.

Sanga doesn't appeal to me either. Djourou is the only Arsenal defender woirth having if fit as they don't appear to keep clean sheets when he is out this season.

No Everton players is an oversight considering decent fixtures coming up. Alos possibly look at Villa. How about Sagna > Coleman and Jara > Walker?

      STOP!!!!!

Don't make the moves that will cost you money (due to player value gained) until your hand is forced by player price going up. I.e:

Dempsey to VDV when you don't know whether VDV is fit yet can be hel back as neither set to change in price yet.

Rooney to RVP needs to be done today due to RVP going up in price tonight.

Premier League rivals but not local rivals.

At the time Andy Cole was a big buy, as Newcastle were doing well, Alan Smith, Ferdinand and Cantona from Leeds were also good examples.

I don't know about Ferdinand. Leeds had one season where they looked in with a chance of winning the PL.

      Yes.

You seriously think Newcastle are going to get clean sheets from their away fixtures? Why double up on Simpson and Harper when you could play VDV for a potential DGW or at the least a plum tie against Blackpool?

Considering options if VDV is out.

Who do you think would be a better replacement

    Lennon

    or

    Walcott?

Im just worrying a bit about whether Walcott will play both Doubles or not?

    Kelly Djourou* Johnson* (Coleman Rafael)
    VdV* Fabregas* Nani Adam* (Ferguson*)

    a) Djourou + VdV > Huth + Brunt
    b) Djourou + VdV > Huth + Walcott
    c) Djourou + Rooney > Huth + Odemwingie

What's the deal with the Blackpool keeper situation? Is Gilks due back any time soon? Was Kingson just dropped on the weekend? I saw Rachubka flap at one cross and he let in 5 so hardly covered himself in glory. Do people think Kingson will be back in this week?

Has anyone put forward a more viable alternative to Djourou this week other than Huth as I already boarded that gravy train last gameweek.

Like most I'm considering Djourou out for blank or blanks.

    OR

Djourou and VDV out in order to get in Walcott and blank or blanks.

Sagna is a little over budget for me.

Roger Johnson is an option but he has a blank next gameweek and I already have Foster so I'm not convinced on doubling up on Brum.

Do people think Fabs and RVP will be enough Arsenal coverage for this DGW espeically considering the blank next gameweek?
