Gameweek 26 saw 256 fantasy managers battle it out in the first round of the Members Paddy Power Cup. With scores spanning a range of 78 points and an incredible average score of 75, heavy defeats were the order of the round, and ties decided by the slightest of margins evoked more heartbreak than normal. To see the full list of results click here, for a brief round-up of the highs and lows of the first round read on…

We had a total of nine centurions in the round, with Mark on the end of an absolute tonking from one of them:

  1. Civan 103 – 52 Mike
  2. Dick Fran Dyke 101 – 40 Ham
  3. Goose 104 – 66 CROUCHINHO
  4. Walky Talky 100 – 75 Chuckie
  5. stebwfc 107 – 86 alex234
  6. RafaMC 108 – 47 Mark
  7. Aldershot Rejects 102 – 78 AliMcGlashan
  8. fiacloir 105 – 85 Jimmers
  9. xabi_14 100 – 86 n1jimmy

Although achieving the top score in the round, RafaMC didn’t  inflict the heaviest defeat on poor Mark. That title goes to Cesc no Drogs who put the lowest scorer of the round, NuttyWutty, to the sword 93 – 30, putting a whopping 63 points between them. The fifth fixture on that list between stebwfc and alex234 was the highest aggregate scoring match-up of the round.

Drubbings aside, and there were six fixtures decided by just a single point. MagNanimous, biegs, Gavin, Boofstein, Dangeroussnails and Write Home, edged out bantamstu, Peter, kieran0426, Johnny Unitas, fudokung and Attila the Bum respectively.

Closer still was trisonetwo‘s 86 – 86 draw with tomcon, with the former advancing thanks to his superior overall rank.

The luckiest manager of the round is probably Geraldo1977, who squeezed into the second round with the lowest score good enough to get a win, as he saw off the aptly-named Cannon Fodder, 54 – 50.

At the other end of that spectrum, was Zizo and soulman27, who must bemused as to how they haven’t made the next round after losing 95 – 90 to Vanilla Kush F.C. and 94 – 90 to our very own Granville, respectively.

Although I think another extremely unlucky manager was Akers, who lost to pompeyfan somehow.

Congratulations to the 128 fantasy mangers progressing to the second round. The fixtures for the next stage will be announced in an article at the end of the week.

The prizes for the competition, provided by Paddy Power, are a free £150 bet for the winner, £75 for the runner-up and £50 for third place.

If you’re not with Paddy Power yet, then you can sign up via this site and get a free £20 when you register and bet £10. (All offers are only available to those aged 18 and over and are subject to Paddy Power’s terms and conditions.)

lots of negativity about Brunt at the moment. i've never owned him but given i dont particulary want to break up my front three (RVP, Tevez, Berba [dbl coming up]) to get Odem...he seems like the next best bet for 2 home games vs WH and WOL?

Stat wise he's still up there for lots of attempts (just doesnt seem to get many on target!). Is he not a better option than Barton just for this week?

Im goin Odem rather than Brunt.

          yup..i saw it..at the emirates..
but manutd style of play always make their opponent tactics doesnt work..their passing..thru pass..and counter attack..very dengerous..

ermm..but the idea to play barton and bench nani also can be considered as a cheeky tactics..especially against my league rivals..

What’s the deal with the Blackpool keeper situation? Is Gilks due back any time soon? Was Kingson just dropped on the weekend? I saw Rachubka flap at one cross and he let in 5 so hardly covered himself in glory.

Do people think Kingson will be back in this week?

Yeah get rid or just play Foster until the end of the season and go without a keeper for week 28. He could do well enough at Liverpool and Spurs and his other fixtures are pretty good

Hi.. Where did Martins play before joining Birmingham?

I've seen some Birmingham fans got excited to see him pairing with Zigic/Jerome upfront with support from Bently and Gardner.

Apart from Odem who plays friendly in Nigeria and will return exhaustedly, is Martins an interesting differential for this DGW?

Saw some opinions on the last page disagree, by the way.. 🙁

He then tries to get them to take a leaflet about it - he was so dull they made their excuses and left! Loved that show.

My thoughts exactly. i expect on the last day of the season people will be on here convincing you that Fabs is ready to explode.

I'm begining to wonder if walcott isn't a better fantasy option. I can't see that he is justifying £11.8m when Nani is better fantasy point scorer at £2m less.

Walcott's not that far behind him on points either and is £4m less.

If I'm ahead in my mini league (just) should I take a few risks to try and get a bigger gap or try and guess what my rival will do and copy him to play safe? E.g. I'm pretty he will captain Van Persie this week as he doesn't have Fabs. Should I do the same?

IMO you should just make decisions for your own team reflecting what you think will get you the most points without thinking about rivals

Rivals don't matter. This game is played by you alone, other players don't have any impact on how you'll do.

Feb 19th/20th is the earliest you will know if the game is 100% to happen in GW 28, so you won't know beofre this deadline. I don't think it will happen anyway as it's not in Arsenal's interest to play it if they don't have to.

Nani, VDV, Fabs, Adam (A Young)
    Odem, Tevez, RVP.

I want to play A Young, who should I swap him out for? Leaning towards VDV as Nani always performs well at home.

Odemwingie people, be wary. He plays midweek for Nigeria. He's not the most injury free player. He could come back with a knock, or get himself injured after the first game.

Personally, I don't think he's worth it even for just one week. West Brom are dire. If they had some semblance of form, maybe it could be a good play, but at the moment, he could easily come away with a 4 pointer or worse.

The funds you save on him have no where to go.

Defense is a minefield, midfield is mid priced, leaving the strikers, and if everyone has Tevez and Van Persie, that leaves one spot open which is taken up by Odem where it could be given to a bigger player.

Disagree. Unless he comes back injured (which everyone should know by friday) then he's a good pick this GW. Westbrom need to find form ASAP or they are going down and as long as he's fit, he'll play both games(may i remind you VS 2 sh*tty teams) and hopefully score. Vela in the team could be a + and could create more chances for him
