[sbu_large_image] Scouting The Doubles

Newcastle will undoubtedly be buoyed by their astonishing comeback last Gameweek, as they clawed back a four goal half-time deficit to draw with Arsenal late on at St James’ Park. Whilst Joey Barton accredited the Geordie nation with helping the side’s brave home performance, Newcastle play both their double Gameweek 27 fixtures on the road, travelling to Blackburn next Saturday then, with no FA Cup duties, face Birmingham three days later in a Tuesday evening kick-off at St Andrews.

The Prospects

Pardew has been in charge of four away league games for Newcastle and the stats make depressing reading; twice they have failed to score and on the two occasions they have found the net, they have mustered just one goal, as their tactics are a little more tentative away from home. Only once in those games have they kept a clean sheet, away to West Brom.

Both Blackburn and Birmingham garner the vast majority of their league points on home turf, suggesting this could be something of a struggle for the Toon Army’s boys. As Saturday’s defeat at Wigan shows, however, Blackburn are certainly not as tight at the back since Steve Kean’s appointment, picking up just one clean sheet in his eight games in charge and, with Birmingham so miserly at the back, it would seem Ewood Park could be Newcastle’s best bet for finding the net.

Pardew’s new 4-2-3-1 formation was torn apart in the first half against Arsenal, though with Arsene Wenger’s side imploding in the second forty-five, it remains to be seen how successful a ploy this will prove to be in the upcoming games.

There is another, possibly significant factor to consider; Newcastle are one of three sides who follow their double fixture with a home clash in Gameweek 28 when they face Bolton at St James’ Park. That’s in stark contrast to Arsenal, Tottenham and Birmingham who all follow their double fixtures with a blank.

Likely Lads

He may have spent the vast majority of this season in Andy Carroll’s shadow, but Kevin Nolan is the fourth joint-top scorer in the top flight, level with the likes of Didier Drogba, Rafael Van der Vaart and Darren Bent on ten goals. Newcastle’s forward line is decimated by injury and at present only Nile Ranger is fit and available. Peter Lovenkrands was used wide right in the Arsenal game, suggesting Pardew sees him more of a winger than centre forward. With that in mind, Nolan’s keen eye for goal makes him the more reliable source.

At £4.8m in Fantasy Premier League, Joey Barton is proving to be one of the bargains of the season. Spot-kick and set-piece duties mean he’s got a better chance than most of being involved in any Newcastle goals and his 16 Bonus Points show he’s caught the judges eye more than any Newcastle player.

Cheeky Punt

If you are a member, it’s worth checking out the OPTA stats from this week; Jonás Gutiérrez, in particular, was in fantastic form. Compared to his previous performances this season, his contribution to the cause improved significantly in the Arsenal match, which suggests the Argentine winger could benefit more than most if Pardew deems the new formation as the way forward for Newcastle in light of so many injuries up front.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I think these next three weeks are a bit of a bear trap in that apart from Arsenal have great fixtures, and then they have no fixture. I think it will be about getting a full team out next week as much as it is about getting Dble gw players.

I sold vdv last night for a young, a also bought samba in. With ucl and FA cup, the top teams will rotate so do people think they will be switching to the likes of lpool, villa etc?

I'm not worrying too much about the next 3 weeks. I used my wc to set up my team for the rest of the season and won't ruin the long term for short term gain. I don't mind fielding 10 men in gw 28.

No new developments yet so we're all still in the dark.

I agree with the article that Newcastle struggle on the road. I also think Nolan is a better shout than Barton this GW, for some reason.

I think one of the better teams to invest in this week is Wolves. They, more than any of the other teams at the bottom, look like they're ready to scrap for their premier league lives now. Fixtures ease up for them now too esp after Arsenal match.

I can't wait for the next deadline so I won't be able to change my WC team anymore. Can I have some thoughts on my latest offering?

    Szczesny
    Kolarov Vidic Kelly
Adam Fabregras Nani VDV (anyone know how his injury is looking?)
    Odemwingie Tevez RVP (c)
    Subs: Begovic Barton Walker Simpson

I'm finding it hard to get Everton coverage. Their fixtures look fantastic and I really wouldn't mind getting someone in. Thoughts?

Camzy, to answer your question earlier, I'm using this wildcard to set up my team for the run in now.

This was the reason why I didn't want to use it in GW24.

At the moment I'm probably only going to have 8 DGW players, 9 at the most. Too many people are overloading with Ars, Brum and Tott players in positions where they are going to be seriously shorthanded in GW28 and will need to take points hits to field a team.

Also, Everton DGW in GW29 so using wildcard to get at least one Eve now to cover that so that I'm not chasing my tail after GW28.

Good point Nomar. A lot of people are over loading on this gameweek. While this week might be a huge GW for points, I think there is a great chance that GW 28 could be a very slow one. For those who need to catch up points, setting yourself up with GW 28 could be a great way to get points back/extend your lead if your going well.

      Decent points.

I've thought long and hard about GW 28.

Plan to have 5 Arsenal, Brum, Tottenham players and then force one transfer out for GW 28 to field XI.

Worried that I'm falling a bit behind the times by keeping Berbatov, but with my transfer plan, he stays put because of the changes I need to make this week and next to remain on top of things. His fixtures aren't good at all, and with the likes of Odem, Carew, Bent and Saha lurking down there, I feel like I might miss out.

Of course not. Everyone will have a new link etc. Winner will be the highest on the ladder. No other way to separate the winner. Too late to introduce tougher hit rules. Most of here are pretty tight with trades anyway. Maybe the 0.9 Millionaire Club would sort out the teams. Way too easy to finish inside it now with all the dead teams.

A little lost on what to do this week...

    Foster
    Kolarov/Rafael - Coleman - Jara
    Fabregas - Nani - VDV - Adam
    Tevez - Odemwingie - Berbatov

    Begovic - N'Zogbia - Kolarov/Rafael - Djourou

Did want to do Barbatov to RVP. But with his missing fixture in GW28 and rotation risk this GW, its not a wise move?

Most important issue seems to be Djourou out. Walker/Kelly in?

    advice appreciated lads.

      Two Stoke in back 7.
Cahill's all good but not too sure on Downing either. I'm currently thinking of 3 ARS possibly RVP/Fabs and Walcott. Rest look fine.

newcastle has improved defensively under pardew imo if u ignore their last game 😉 they could have had 4 cs in a row if it they hadn't conceded 2 injury time goals ag. sunderland and spurs..i expect them to keep 1 cleanie in this dgw....

What to do, What to do!!

This is my current line up for this week:

    Foster
    Vidic/Carr/Djourou
    Nani/Brunt/Walcott/Adam/VDV
    Tevez/RvP (c)

    Subs: Stockdale/Berbatov/Walker/Coleman

Bloke in 2nd will probably line up with this team:

    Foster
    Evatt/Simpson/Carr/Djourou
    Brunt/Adam/Fabregas/VDV
Zigic/Berbatov (But will have shipped in RvP last night as I've seen he's made a change already)

So he's maxed himself with players for 27 and looking like he has 7 out for the next GW.

I know the right thing to do is hold off on making a transfer this week - but do you think it's worth getting in Odem for the double, even with the uncertainty of both Djourou and VDV?

Opinions and thoughts are always appreciated.

i have berbs and a free transfer, ive decided to not get odemwingie. Transfers too valuble in later GWs, I made a plan with my WC and Im gonna stick to it. I have 8 DGWers, 9 if VDV plays both, then I gotta take two out of nani, berbs and tevez, the 3 highest scorers in the game. I can live with that. Could united/city go 0-0, yeah. But as soon as this DGW is over Im already looking to dump brunt, adding another WBA will only make the process longer to get rid. To be fair though, Odem will likely be the one player I regret not bringing in come Saturday afternoon.

Need you advice on this. I'm thinking of getting Bent in for Berbatov and planning to bench Nani for the coming game week. Do you think its a decent move? I will have 2 free transfers left for GW28, so that I can rearrange my team in case of injuries/ blank GWs.

    Thoughts....

Should I leave my team as is with 7 dgw players (if Djourou plays).
This will give me 2 transfers to have a starting 11 for gw28.

    or

Should i use my 1 free transfer this week for Odemwingie IN - Keane OUT?
This will be a strange bench of Tevez, Coleman and Bosingwa/Rafael
