[sbu_large_image] Scouting The Doubles

Newcastle will undoubtedly be buoyed by their astonishing comeback last Gameweek, as they clawed back a four goal half-time deficit to draw with Arsenal late on at St James’ Park. Whilst Joey Barton accredited the Geordie nation with helping the side’s brave home performance, Newcastle play both their double Gameweek 27 fixtures on the road, travelling to Blackburn next Saturday then, with no FA Cup duties, face Birmingham three days later in a Tuesday evening kick-off at St Andrews.

The Prospects

Pardew has been in charge of four away league games for Newcastle and the stats make depressing reading; twice they have failed to score and on the two occasions they have found the net, they have mustered just one goal, as their tactics are a little more tentative away from home. Only once in those games have they kept a clean sheet, away to West Brom.

Both Blackburn and Birmingham garner the vast majority of their league points on home turf, suggesting this could be something of a struggle for the Toon Army’s boys. As Saturday’s defeat at Wigan shows, however, Blackburn are certainly not as tight at the back since Steve Kean’s appointment, picking up just one clean sheet in his eight games in charge and, with Birmingham so miserly at the back, it would seem Ewood Park could be Newcastle’s best bet for finding the net.

Pardew’s new 4-2-3-1 formation was torn apart in the first half against Arsenal, though with Arsene Wenger’s side imploding in the second forty-five, it remains to be seen how successful a ploy this will prove to be in the upcoming games.

There is another, possibly significant factor to consider; Newcastle are one of three sides who follow their double fixture with a home clash in Gameweek 28 when they face Bolton at St James’ Park. That’s in stark contrast to Arsenal, Tottenham and Birmingham who all follow their double fixtures with a blank.

Likely Lads

He may have spent the vast majority of this season in Andy Carroll’s shadow, but Kevin Nolan is the fourth joint-top scorer in the top flight, level with the likes of Didier Drogba, Rafael Van der Vaart and Darren Bent on ten goals. Newcastle’s forward line is decimated by injury and at present only Nile Ranger is fit and available. Peter Lovenkrands was used wide right in the Arsenal game, suggesting Pardew sees him more of a winger than centre forward. With that in mind, Nolan’s keen eye for goal makes him the more reliable source.

At £4.8m in Fantasy Premier League, Joey Barton is proving to be one of the bargains of the season. Spot-kick and set-piece duties mean he’s got a better chance than most of being involved in any Newcastle goals and his 16 Bonus Points show he’s caught the judges eye more than any Newcastle player.

Cheeky Punt

If you are a member, it’s worth checking out the OPTA stats from this week; Jonás Gutiérrez, in particular, was in fantastic form. Compared to his previous performances this season, his contribution to the cause improved significantly in the Arsenal match, which suggests the Argentine winger could benefit more than most if Pardew deems the new formation as the way forward for Newcastle in light of so many injuries up front.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Anyone on their WC should just wait for the Scout Picks & copy them. No point stressing all week etc.

Indeed, but they're only for the one gameweek with no thought to the rest of the season.

Would be a dangerous strategy in my opinion.

The DT on TotalFPL has done much better but then again, neither that nor the scout picks take future fixtures in consideration (blank GW28)

I don't like to go out to restaurants, especially chains on Valentines, because they give you some crap overpriced set menu. It's a con.

Sorry, got posted at the bottom of the previous page:

Should I leave my team as is with 7 dgw players (if Djourou + VdV play).
This will give me 2 transfers to have a starting 11 for gw28.

    or

Should i use my 1 free transfer this week for Odemwingie IN – Keane OUT?
This will be a strange bench of Tevez, Coleman and Bosingwa/Rafael

One more thing, I'd question the wisdom of spending 6.2 on Sagna, considering how shaky their defence looks without Djourou; 2 attacking players ought to be enough coverage if they're doing well

full 15 is essential so you can rotate in and out between the games, so if Eto'o doesn't score on the first night, you can sub him out and bring in Messi who is playing the next night, or more likely Crouch or some bench player who has the home leg of a game, full squad is essential

Looking for a midfielder for 6.7 or less, just for GW 28 and 29.

So far thinking Nolan (BOL/EVE), Etherington (WBA/whm), or Brunt (stk/bir)

Got Coleman, no money for Cahill, and no room for Saha in a (post-GW27) front line of Tevez/Bent/Van Persie. I see what you mean in that he's not the best representation from Everton but for the sake of a 5th midfielder to play GW28 and when Adam has a tough game, I'm leaning that way

A for me. MU fixtures are tough so losing Rooney makes sense, Fabs is consistent and always likely to score well, VDV is only missing one or two games and has a nice run from GW29 that you may as well bench him until to not lose value

I wouldn't keep Vidic for two reasons:

          a) The fixtures don't scream cleanie,
          b) Whenever RiO and Vidic aren't both playing Utd tend to ship goals even in the "easy" fixtures.

Right, so people think walcott will play both DGW games? But he's scheduled to play in the England friendly.

How far apart are these games? Even if he does play both, he might be knackered.

I am debating whether to remove Walcott and bring in Fabregas myself, I think it is more likely for Cesc to play both over Walcott, but that is just a hunch, that way I only have 2 Arsenal guys and less of a headache for GW28.

Well currently, barring more than 1 injury, I have 1 Birmingham, 1 Tottenham and 3 Arsenal, so I can get away with using my 2 free transfers to take me through 28.

However, I wouldn't mind Barton, I just can't see who I'd replace at the moment.

The midfield is a bit lightweight and could be looking pretty rubbish the moment 27 is over. Ethers isn't on set pieces and barely ever plays 90 minutes, Lennon is the third best FPL spurs midfielder, Walcott is streaky as hell, Nolan overpriced compared to Barton, plus Odemwingie isn't much kop after 27.

Appreciate some advice guys I have two transfers and my team is -

    Foster (Stockdale)

    Vidic Kelly Walker Djourou Coleman

    VDV Walcott Nani Adam Barton

    Berbatov RVP Tevez

Stuck on where to go, thinking Berba > for DGW striker Bent/Odem. More confused on who to bench, thinking about playing five across the middle (subject to VDV being fit) in which case I dont need to do Berba transfer. In general bit stuck any advice really appreciated.

    Hello

If I decide to go berba => odem, then who would you bench of
    Nani, Tevez, Ferguson, VDV?

Well propably I won't do it, just becouse bench decision will fail and may use both transfers in defence (vidic and djorue).
Oh yes, you are correct, I'm counting ferguson gives me 3+2+couple bonus points!

Looks like Djorou is out but iam 0.1 short of to get Huth
I cant get Walcott in without losing VDV

    I have 2 free transfers,
    so thinking
    A. Berbatov, Djorou -> Odemwingie and Huth
    B. Other ideas.

Am I right in thinking that if they weren't planning on playing the ars - tott game in the midweek of GW28 then it would already have been fixed on a different date? The other games were re-arranged pretty quickly.

I think that i'm going to gamble on the above by having two brum players along with my 3 arsenal and 1 spurs. The way I see it is the chances are at least 50:50 of the arsenal game going ahead. If not, then I will take a hit to get 10 players for GW28. This hit and the missing player should be covered by the fact that I will have two brum playing twice the following week. Most people who want brum players for that week will have to take a hit anyway so I won't be any worse off (presuming everyone has the obligatory 3 arsenal players).

    Am I way off here?

They don't know yet, because it will depend on results after GW27 whether there will be a place in GW28.

          No.

They could have rescheduled it for midweek the evening that they beat Ipswich and had the proviso it might need moving again if an FA Cup game is required like United/Chelsea - but they didn't.

It very well could go ahead then, there might be a space. Definitely don't make the assumption that if Arsenal beat Orient it will definitely go ahead in midweek though, as that certainly isn't the case.

The game is off until your are otherwise told difference, that is the best plan of action.

It's a lottery. I'm considering playing without a keeper in gw 28 as I have Stockdale & Foster. Foster will always play in my team so I might spend my transfer on an outfield player rather.

+1. I've done my transfer, but I may make more if necessary after.

DGW's are weird for hits, because if you switch a non player for a DGW player for a hit, you're very likely to get your 4 points back.

yeah I agree the gamble normally pays off but most players I can think to bring in I wouldnt want for more than the one week, they could become liabilities very quickly. Plus so many moves to make between now and GW30 to accomodate blanks anf future doubles, I feel like whatever net gain from taking a hit now will catch up to me in the next few weeks.

This Djourou "injury" is getting on my nerves, anyone have any news on it?

Im starting to think that maybe its fake, that maybe Wenger told Djourou to fake injury so he could get out of international duty. And the reason we are not getting any news is that it went so wrong(conceding 4 goals) that Wenger is afraid it will be found out.

I'm hoping that it's gonna be one of those 'scans reveal not as bad as first thought and could be fit for weekend', but in reality I think it'll be a few weeks at least. Let's be honest tho they're not going to risk him against wolves anyway if there's a chance he'll be fit for barca.
