[sbu_large_image] Scouting The Doubles

Newcastle will undoubtedly be buoyed by their astonishing comeback last Gameweek, as they clawed back a four goal half-time deficit to draw with Arsenal late on at St James’ Park. Whilst Joey Barton accredited the Geordie nation with helping the side’s brave home performance, Newcastle play both their double Gameweek 27 fixtures on the road, travelling to Blackburn next Saturday then, with no FA Cup duties, face Birmingham three days later in a Tuesday evening kick-off at St Andrews.

The Prospects

Pardew has been in charge of four away league games for Newcastle and the stats make depressing reading; twice they have failed to score and on the two occasions they have found the net, they have mustered just one goal, as their tactics are a little more tentative away from home. Only once in those games have they kept a clean sheet, away to West Brom.

Both Blackburn and Birmingham garner the vast majority of their league points on home turf, suggesting this could be something of a struggle for the Toon Army’s boys. As Saturday’s defeat at Wigan shows, however, Blackburn are certainly not as tight at the back since Steve Kean’s appointment, picking up just one clean sheet in his eight games in charge and, with Birmingham so miserly at the back, it would seem Ewood Park could be Newcastle’s best bet for finding the net.

Pardew’s new 4-2-3-1 formation was torn apart in the first half against Arsenal, though with Arsene Wenger’s side imploding in the second forty-five, it remains to be seen how successful a ploy this will prove to be in the upcoming games.

There is another, possibly significant factor to consider; Newcastle are one of three sides who follow their double fixture with a home clash in Gameweek 28 when they face Bolton at St James’ Park. That’s in stark contrast to Arsenal, Tottenham and Birmingham who all follow their double fixtures with a blank.

Likely Lads

He may have spent the vast majority of this season in Andy Carroll’s shadow, but Kevin Nolan is the fourth joint-top scorer in the top flight, level with the likes of Didier Drogba, Rafael Van der Vaart and Darren Bent on ten goals. Newcastle’s forward line is decimated by injury and at present only Nile Ranger is fit and available. Peter Lovenkrands was used wide right in the Arsenal game, suggesting Pardew sees him more of a winger than centre forward. With that in mind, Nolan’s keen eye for goal makes him the more reliable source.

At £4.8m in Fantasy Premier League, Joey Barton is proving to be one of the bargains of the season. Spot-kick and set-piece duties mean he’s got a better chance than most of being involved in any Newcastle goals and his 16 Bonus Points show he’s caught the judges eye more than any Newcastle player.

Cheeky Punt

If you are a member, it’s worth checking out the OPTA stats from this week; Jonás Gutiérrez, in particular, was in fantastic form. Compared to his previous performances this season, his contribution to the cause improved significantly in the Arsenal match, which suggests the Argentine winger could benefit more than most if Pardew deems the new formation as the way forward for Newcastle in light of so many injuries up front.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Yeah thought about it, just tempted to get the doubles from Berbs and Saha. Of course, with Saha injury history, it's more than likely that my plan is going to get smashed :D.

Worth doing Djourou-->Carr or a Stoke def? Or should I rather stick djourou in there and trade out Hughes/Bardsley that both have games in gw 28?

Same with VDV. Best to put him in starting 11 and hope for the best or sell for say Walcott/Bentley? (Not you Camzy)

    I have 2 free trades.

I'm considering Djourou to R Johnson and VDV to Walcott( for a hit). I think it's best to wait on VDV injury news. I think Djourou is out for a while though so would get rid of him.

Id do djourou to carr. Maybe biased as I currently have Carr. But if you can get XI on the pitch for GW28, id make that move and hold him for the GW29 double. And I am holding on to VDV, with the idea that worst case scenario he plays blackpool and could still score at least 7, but i have a hunch he's gonna play both.

      My hunches are meaningless btw

I was considering Carr and would then role a transfer to gw 28. I would then stick VDV in the starting 11 and hope for the best as my 2 main rivals prob wont sell him. That way i have 2 free trades to fix any problems in gw 28.

Problem is my 2 main rivals both have Walcott while I have Fabregas. Fabregas has been dissapointing me all season and this last gw was a bitter pill to swallow.

That's why i was considering VDV-->Walcott as I think he might score big this double, but then again no guarantee he will play both.

Aaah, anyone else think this double could potentially be a nightmare with injuries & rotation due to CL games?

Yeah, the question is who will Arsenal play vs Wolves? Full strength or will they rest indispensible assets for the Barca game - i.e. Fab, Van P, maybe Walcott (he's playing for England as well and he's young)?

I am tempted to just play safe and captain Adam although the potential upside is much smaller.

          Hmmm

Might use my other trade to bring in another DGW def (Huth?) or might just save it. Trying to avoid anymore Ars, Tot or Birm players as no game in GW28 and alreay got Walcott, VDV and VanP

Okay, having fiddled around with my team all week, without actually going through with changes, I need to decide on strategy before I decide on who goes into my WC tean, so here goes:

    Option A

    2 Brums (Carr/Foster) 2 Arsenal (RVP/Walcott) 0 Spurs (VDV OUT)

That way 1 move, Walcott OUT means I have a full team for GW28 - barring injuries, and have 2 Brums still for their DGW. VDV "injury" concerns me, and I think we might only get 1 game and 2 blanks out of him over GW27-28 and then who knows with Champions League.

    Option B

    3 Brums (Carr/Foster/Zigic OR Bentley) 2 Arsenal (RVP/Fabregas) 0 Spurs (VDV OUT)

    Same again for VDV, but now 5 out for GW28, and a freebie plus 4 points required to field full 11, that being said, I have 3 Brums then for their second DGW in GW29. I fancy a punt on one DGW player this week, and Zigic/Bentley/Carew and Doyle are all at the forefront over Odemwingie (who is currently in my team), finally;

    Option C

    2 Brums (Carr/Foster) 3 Arsenal (RVP/Walcott/Fabregas) 0 Spurs

It seems I have decided to risk it and lose all the value on VDV, I have also decided more or less the same thing on Vidic. Again, 5 players out for GW 28, so 2 transfers required for GW28, one of which would be a 4 point hit.

for anyone that takes the time to read this, it would be interesting to see what people are thinking as to Arsenal/Spurs/Birmingham/Stoke/BLP/Newcastle exposure for the DGW. I am ruddy well confused!

I'm going Option 3 and using my free transfer the next week to field 11. I might even get a Spurs mid (VDV/Bale/Lennon) and take a 4pt hit the next week. It's fun to take a punt once in a while...

          Well my plan was:

          GW26: WC
          GW27: No transfers (9 DGW's including VdV)
GW28: Would have 2 transfers: Need to take one of RJ, Fabs, RVP, VdV out. Probably Fabs as he will no doubt drop back to 11.8 over GW28. Cahill or someone in.
GW29: I sub would be Brunt -> Fabs. Would have 2 Everton and 1 brum for the DGW. Plus another transfer for another DGW or possibly leave it.

I am the bearer of good news Johnny. You've miscounted the players you have out. Options B and C give you 4 outfield players out and one goalie, meaning that you can make the one transfer and still field 11 players.

For the record, I've come to pretty much the same conclusion regarding VDV, an am looking at Szecezsnzey, Fab, RVP and Bentley from Arsenal and Brum.

      Hello JU.

I'm going with something very similar to option C myself. But with RJ instead of Carr. I don't think it's the end of the world to field only 10 players in GW28. If you can field an extra player in 27 instead you'll still get the same amount of games from your squad over those 2 gameweeks.

Apart from that I'm going with Shawcross, Etherington, Adam and Simpson from the teams you mention. I don't believe much in Simpson but from two games he should be good enough. Stoke have good fixtures for the near future so their players should all do well imo.

I also think this is the right time to lose Vidic.

With option C you would only need to make 1 transfer to have 11 players the next week, assuming all are fit. Eg transfer out walott, bench Foster, Carr RVP, Fabs. So C for me

I'm confused too. At the moment I have 3 Arsenal (your Option C three) and just Bentley from Birmingham. By deadline day I may well have Carr in there too. But the reason I've not got him now is that moving forward I want a backline with attacking potential all the way through (at the moment: Rafael, Kolarov, Coleman, Kelly, Walker). Carr doesn't fill me with joy as a long term option so I'd want him out after the 2nd DGW to make space for one of that lot - or similar. Also with that gap in the middle it's essentially just the one DGW you're getting from him... so my thinking is that I'd rather take a punt on a DGWer further up the field (the guys you mention - plus I'm looking at Vela and Guttierez as leftfield mega-punts).

As far as Foster's concerned I'm not sure he's worth the extra money over Begovic and Hennessey(which is my current pairing).

I'm ready to be talked round though. Wildcards are fun!

I want to fit a Birmingham defensive asset into my defense, but where?

    Hart
    Vidic, Kelly, Huth, Baines

PS: My version of FPL only allows one GK and 4 defs.

      WC for DG week
      Foster (Kingson)
      Carr Simpson Huth (Coleman Kelly)
      Fab Walcott Adams Brunt (Nani)
      VP Odem Campbell
Everyone has DG, all Mid/attack play at home
2 changes next week cost 4pts, 10.6m in bank
      Any thoughts?

Morning all. Had a lovely wee gameweek just passed. Now VDV and Djourou have presented me with posers this gameweek, not that I mind, they have been good to me thus far god love em.

    With this team for GW27:
    Foster (Begovic)
    Huth Kelly Rafael (Coleman Djourou)
    Fabs VDV Brunt Adam (Nani)
    RVP Tevez Odem

The general concensus on here is that Djourou has had one of his legs amputated and needs getting rid of.

SO with 5.9m to spend on a possible replacement who would you go for?

AND should I take a 4 point hit and get rid of VDV as well leaving 14.5 to spend on 1 DEF and 1 MID? If so what pair would you then recommend?

    Thanks guys.

    Hi guys...
    need to play 2 from:
    Enrique
    Kelly
    Tevez
    Berba
(one has to be a DEF)
    Currently gone with Enrique/Kelly!?
    Thoughts?

Tricky. Enrique obviously with his DGW. Kelly, Tevez and Berba are much a muchness. If you expect Mancini to play the same stifling tactics as he did at the Emirates, then I can't see there being many goals in that game. I'd play Kelly if Daglish sticks with the 5-3-1-1 formation.

tosey, are you still about? I see you have Shawcross and I'm thinking of getting him in ahead of Huth with Stoke's nice fixtures. I reckon the spotlight will be on him for the Arsenal game after what happened with Ramsey so it could be a win big / lose big situation.

Am I being ridiculous ignoring the obvious option in Huth. I can see Stoke causing Arsenal all sorts of trouble - especially after the Barcelona game.

Great stuff Gargamel, appreciate that. I don't rate Huth as a defender, but he's clearly great in the air. Kenwyne Jones, Carew, Huth and Shawcross is a frightening prospect against Arsenal. How are they going to cope?!

Arsenal have picked up just 13 points from 11 games against top-half opposition this season. Even Wolves have a better record against the best sides.

    * The Gunners have conceded a goal every 251 minutes of PL football with Johan Djourou in the side this season. Without him, they have conceded a goal every 54 minutes.

    * The last of Arsenal's 13 attempted shots came in the 67th minute of their 4-4 draw with Newcastle on Saturday.
