[sbu_large_image] Scouting The Doubles

Having beaten West Ham and subsequently climbed out of the drop zone, Birmingham will be looking to take advantage of two home fixtures in the upcoming double Gameweek 27. The club may have the Carling Cup Final with Arsenal just around the corner, but the games against Stoke this weekend, then Newcastle the following Tuesday, are just as important to their season as the Wembley run-out.

With Birmingham also playing two matches in Gameweek 29 there will be plenty of Fantasy investment in McLeish’s men, though with no league match in Gameweek 28, careful planning will be needed, particularly for those bringing in two or three Birmingham players.

The Prospects

Birmingham have had a real problem keeping clean sheets in recent times, with the West Ham shut-out, perhaps surprisingly, their first in ten league matches. They may have lost just twice in the league at St Andrews, but a closer look shows they have won only one of their last seven home games; they’ve also averaged just goal per game in home matches this season.

The January window has allowed McLeish to add quality to the first team, though, with the acquisition of David Bentley and Obafemi Martins adding proven Premier League talent to the ranks. Martins will be expected to add much-needed firepower and competition up front, and he could now be unleashed by McLeish having cut through visa red tape and help boost Birmingham’s goal-fetching credentials.

Their first opponents Stoke have failed to score in their last two games on the road and have one of the worst away records in the league, losing eight of twelve away from the Britannia. Having said that, they don’t lose by big margins and have conceded only 18 goals, that’s just a couple more than Man United.

Birmingham will then face a Newcastle side who, despite their brilliant comeback against Arsenal, are a team struggling for form. Alan Pardew’s outfit have failed to win any of their last four games and have one victory and one clean sheet in their four games on the road under their new manager.

Birmingham will fancy their chances of two home wins then, and prospects look pretty decent for returns from both ends of the field.

The Likely Lads

Goalkeeper “Save” points means Ben Foster is always more likely to get higher returns than any of the Birmingham back four; at present, he has scored 18 more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points than highest-scoring defender Roger Johnson, illustrating his far superior Fantasy consistency. Foster is already the second highest owned goalkeeper; plenty more are set to draft him in before next weekend with his price currently settled at 5.2 in the FPL.

Anyone intent on transferring-in a Birmingham defender, however, could do worse than picking up the aforementioned Roger Johnson. The centre-half has been the most consistent performer in the back four; as well as claiming 2 goals this term, Johnson has been awarded 13 of the 16 Bonus Points given to Birmingham defenders in the season. Johnson can be acquired for 5.1 right now.

Top scorer and club penalty-taker, Craig Gardner has been one of the true successes of this season, following his move from Aston Villa. Gardner grabbed the goal that clinched the Blues’ Cup Final spot and has been a real talisman for McLeish’s side. He’s not one to reap the Bonus Points though. David Bentley has already clocked up more Bonus in four starts for Birmingham than Gardner has all season. Bentley has made the right-wing berth his own since the loan move from Spurs and has shown signs of mirroring his Blackburn form from a couple of years back. His Bonus potential and the consistency of his delivery from the right-flank certainly makes him a consideration.

Cheeky Punt

As mentioned in Sunday’s Scout Notes, Nikola Zigic’s record, when given 90 minutes, is actually fairly respectable; he’s taken part in seven full league games and returned 4 goals and 2 assists, including one in each of his last two starts. McLeish praised him after the vital West Ham win, suggesting that the towering hitman, priced at just 5.3 in the FPL, is finally getting to grips with the English game and is beginning to look like a fixture in the starting XI.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Hi folks, team is a bit of a mess atm, currently is

    Hart (Stockdale)
    Carr Djourou Kelly (Coleman Rafael)
    Nani Nolan Young VDV Adam
    RVP Berb Dzeko

Thinking of doing Stockdale->Szczesny this for this week, leaves me enough to do Dzeko->Tevez (what an awful punt Dzeko was) next week. My problem is then who to bench? VDV and Adam are both a bit dodge with respective injuries and yellow cards, leaving me short of double gwk players, what to do?

So you just popped over from india for the day, went to the FA HQ, spoke to David Bernstein who said..

"Yes Abishek, I will be recheduling the Tottenham vs Arsenal fixture into fanatsy football game week 28 so you have nothing to worry about for your team, ps Adam is really only on 8 yellows"

Thinking of ditching Berbatov for Odemwingie this week. Here's the question though: what do I do next week?

Almost all my money is invested in my front 8, and I only have 0.2 in the bank. If I were to keep Odemwingie after next week (or a similarly priced alternative), it would allow me to bolster my defence and rotational keeper.

However, Berbatov has a double gameweek coming up, is the top-scorer, and is far more reliable than Odemwingie (although he does run hot and cold).

    What would you do?

odemwingie's a bad idea after this week, utd probably don't have a dgw in gw28, berbatov is a the most god damn annoying fpl points leader in history - you either put him in for every game and get a shyteload of 2's along with your 17's and 25's or forget him and hope you can do better overall by playing the fixtures. No idea which is the right way though 😛

I was with you on this tosey, but have changed my mind after looking at the stats.

WBA's have scored a lot of goals at home, and that hasn't really dropped off lately despite their poor form. Wham and Wolves have conceded a lot of goals away. Odem tends to have a hell of a lot of shots when playing at home, and actually has a pretty neat scoring average.

Of course, it helps that I'm on my WC and am planning to sell him for Saha next week.....

I think because GW24 was so good people want to get as many doubles in as possible.

I'm not overloading my team but VDV would have made 7 which is the same number I went into GW24 with and did ok. I fancy getting Bentley in for him.

RvP twice as popular as Cesc on the captains poll. Interesting. I really can't see him playing 180 minutes so I'll be sticking the band on Fabs who will probably get more gametime considering that Diaby and Nasri are out.

It's a tricky one. RVP is on form, and has done well lately.
Fabregas will take over penalties if RVP is rested.

It's almost flip a coin, RVP's form, Vs Fabregas' increased gametime.

Unrelated question: Do Ikea sell stuff in-store that they don't have online?

Because I have a shelving unit I want more of, but it's not on the site. So it's either discontinued, or I have to actually go there.

Ring up your local store. They have a computer system in the store (well, they do at the one near me) that tells them if they have it in their own store, in another store or if it's been discontinued.

(I've just moved house and wasted far too many football playing or watching hours in bastard Ikea 🙁 )

Are most people choosing a squad based on the Spurs v Arsenal being in gw 28 or not being? I have 2 Arsenal, Two Brum and VdV atm. If I only knew it was on for gw28 I would get another Arsenal player but even without that move I will be only able to put out nine if it's not on. 😕

i think it will be on

anyway i dont see the difference anyway, over the 2 weeks youll have the same minutes from your team whether it be 180 then 0 or 90 then 90

I've set it up for either. 7 Doubles so that if Arsenal is off I can make 2 transfers to field 11.

If it is on then all the better

Eh? Say you've got 5 Arse and Spurs, and the game goes ahead, you'll have 180 then 90 5 times.

If the game is off (which I suspect it will be), you either have 180 then 0 5 times, or you make a couple of transfers and have 180 + 0 3 times, and 180 + 90 twice.

So you get more minutes from your team if the game goes ahead, or if it doesn't go ahead and you make transfers.

im not talking about if its on or off, sorry should have been clearer, im assuming its off for the moment and the point im making is what difference does it make if u field

          gwk 27 7 doubles, 4 singles
          gwk 28 11 singles

          or

          gwk 27 10 doubles 1 single
          gwk 28 9 singles

if u get more minutes over the 2 weeks (as i will in the 2nd scenario) then go for it

if arsenal spurs is in gwk28 even better

Put it this way. Chelsea v Man U is OFF for GW 28 (yet still in the ticker because they have pencilled it in should Chelsea lose in the Fa Cup replay).

Arsenal v Spurs is OFF for GW 28 and not in the ticker because they haven't pencilled it in yet dependant on the FA Cup. Look at Arsenals next month of fixtures and ask if they would want to add a game with Spurs in the middle of them. It's not an obligation for them to play as soon as there is a space free.

Yet most people seem to accept that they need to plan for Chelsea not happening, we don't get lots of posts wondering the chances of Everton winning.

i assume the decision would be with spurs tho as they are the home team, if they choose that week and the PL ok it then arsenal have to oblige

        i think this is correct

It is a joint negotiation I believe between the clubs and the FA, along with input from the police and the TV broadcasters, eg if there is a Man U v Chelsea game on the same night etc, it all facotrs in.

To clarify Chelsea v Man U is OFF until Chelsea lose to Everton. Arsenal v Spurs is OFF even if Arsenal don't draw against Orient, until they have declared they want to use that date.
