Having beaten West Ham and subsequently climbed out of the drop zone, Birmingham will be looking to take advantage of two home fixtures in the upcoming double Gameweek 27. The club may have the Carling Cup Final with Arsenal just around the corner, but the games against Stoke this weekend, then Newcastle the following Tuesday, are just as important to their season as the Wembley run-out.

With Birmingham also playing two matches in Gameweek 29 there will be plenty of Fantasy investment in McLeish’s men, though with no league match in Gameweek 28, careful planning will be needed, particularly for those bringing in two or three Birmingham players.

The Prospects

Birmingham have had a real problem keeping clean sheets in recent times, with the West Ham shut-out, perhaps surprisingly, their first in ten league matches. They may have lost just twice in the league at St Andrews, but a closer look shows they have won only one of their last seven home games; they’ve also averaged just goal per game in home matches this season.

The January window has allowed McLeish to add quality to the first team, though, with the acquisition of David Bentley and Obafemi Martins adding proven Premier League talent to the ranks. Martins will be expected to add much-needed firepower and competition up front, and he could now be unleashed by McLeish having cut through visa red tape and help boost Birmingham’s goal-fetching credentials.

Their first opponents Stoke have failed to score in their last two games on the road and have one of the worst away records in the league, losing eight of twelve away from the Britannia. Having said that, they don’t lose by big margins and have conceded only 18 goals, that’s just a couple more than Man United.

Birmingham will then face a Newcastle side who, despite their brilliant comeback against Arsenal, are a team struggling for form. Alan Pardew’s outfit have failed to win any of their last four games and have one victory and one clean sheet in their four games on the road under their new manager.

Birmingham will fancy their chances of two home wins then, and prospects look pretty decent for returns from both ends of the field.

The Likely Lads

Goalkeeper “Save” points means Ben Foster is always more likely to get higher returns than any of the Birmingham back four; at present, he has scored 18 more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points than highest-scoring defender Roger Johnson, illustrating his far superior Fantasy consistency. Foster is already the second highest owned goalkeeper; plenty more are set to draft him in before next weekend with his price currently settled at 5.2 in the FPL.

Anyone intent on transferring-in a Birmingham defender, however, could do worse than picking up the aforementioned Roger Johnson. The centre-half has been the most consistent performer in the back four; as well as claiming 2 goals this term, Johnson has been awarded 13 of the 16 Bonus Points given to Birmingham defenders in the season. Johnson can be acquired for 5.1 right now.

Top scorer and club penalty-taker, Craig Gardner has been one of the true successes of this season, following his move from Aston Villa. Gardner grabbed the goal that clinched the Blues’ Cup Final spot and has been a real talisman for McLeish’s side. He’s not one to reap the Bonus Points though. David Bentley has already clocked up more Bonus in four starts for Birmingham than Gardner has all season. Bentley has made the right-wing berth his own since the loan move from Spurs and has shown signs of mirroring his Blackburn form from a couple of years back. His Bonus potential and the consistency of his delivery from the right-flank certainly makes him a consideration.

Cheeky Punt

As mentioned in Sunday’s Scout Notes, Nikola Zigic’s record, when given 90 minutes, is actually fairly respectable; he’s taken part in seven full league games and returned 4 goals and 2 assists, including one in each of his last two starts. McLeish praised him after the vital West Ham win, suggesting that the towering hitman, priced at just 5.3 in the FPL, is finally getting to grips with the English game and is beginning to look like a fixture in the starting XI.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

If Fabio is going to prevail with Wilshere within a middle two, future combo of Rodwell and Wishere could be pretty tasty. Rooney in the Ozil position and that big lump Carroll up top.

Agreed, Rooney's best position is as an old-fashioned number 10, in behind a centre forward (not sure if I want that CF to be Carroll long term, though).

I really like Rodwell, we need to give up on Barry, Parker can play the def mid role (just don't ask him to push forward) until Rodwell is ready to step up.

Indeed. I don't mind Tommy Hudds playing there either personally.

I agree about Carroll in a preference sense, but think despite that he is probably the best man for the job. Hopefully Walcott will make his transition to CF eventually and then he can play up top with Lennon on the right.

        Pace!!

He does get more love than perhaps he's earned, because he's English and young, but in the games I've seen him he's got all the attributes you need to be a top class def mid (or indeed CB, he's played there quite a bit too.)

He scored a 'fluke' against Sunderland, and a 'normal' goal against Everton. The other goal was against Chelsea and that was 'normal' too.

This is almost certainly it. I've been doing that myself on my big mini-league rival this week, and I worked out that he did Barbatov out for RVP.

It's a bitch working it out if you did them both at the same time though. If you did them one after the other, it's easier.

Tevez RVP Odem is the de facto front 3 for most of the people that have posted their teams here this week, so knowing that move he can see what is left and Wigan away to Liverpool, Home to United then away to City make Nzog the weak link by far in midfield and Barton seems to be a common choice too now he's on penalties and plays in GW 28.

Looks good.. but every time I've predicted myself a bumper score, I've been disappointed. Before the Djourou/VDV uncertainty I was all set to have a good team for this week.. now I'm not sure where best to use my one free transfer and am tempted to just get R Johnson in for Hughes and hope for the best.

yeah death angel, I'm a bot torn with that one. Utd probably have a better chance of cs but I just have this gut feeling that kolarov's set pieces will be the difference and I'm guessing that City will want zabaletta at left back against nani with kolarov on the wing again, and city will sit deep and try to kill the game off with only really 3 attacking on the counter (kolarov, tevez, silva).
So yeah I reckon if city can score there is a very good chance kolarov will score or assist it.

No probs chamakh that, i'm planning fab & odem to young & tevez next week and I'll play 10 with r.j, bentley, rvp, walcott missing out. defo not selling rvp or walcott and a hit to replace r.j or bentley with someone who has the same amount of games in 28 & 29 is pointless. berbs will go for torres in gw29.

Like it, in fact it's very similar to mine. My one thought would be about doubling up on Arsenal midfielders. Although they are both quality choices, you could get an equally good player for a similar price (Cahill, VDV) and by doing so, get more coverage.

That's just my thought, but it's a good team.

I'm probably the only person on here who's desperatley hoping for Arsenal vs Tottenham to be off next week, so that I can play the wildcard and maximise my advantage over the low scores that will be seen throughout the FPL.

If anyone noticed,"The Pundit" on the FPL site wrote a cloumn referring to the Gameweek 28 blanks: http://fantasy.premierleague.com/M/pundit.mc

It would be pretty bad of them to post this, let the casual player sub out the Tot/Ars players, then just reshcedule the match in the same place.

Any thoughts on the team i've decided on this week? I have 1 free transfer, wasn't sure whether to save it for next week, any obvious transfer out there?

    Kingson (Robinson)
    Djorou Simpson Kelly (Rafael Coleman)
    Nani VDV Fab Adam Brunt
    RVP Defoe (Saha)

    Thanks!

Really struggling this week and need some help.
    Szcezney (Kingson)
Kolarov Evra Coleman Kelly Murphy(worst buy ever)
    Nani VDV Walcott Cesc Adam
    Teves Odem Berbs

RVP seems like a must so i would get rid of Sczezney but for who? Foster is a good pick but id be left short GW28 now Kingson has been dropped. Also thinking of replacing Evra with R.Johnson. Berbs would go for RVP. What would you guy do?

RVP seems a must!!! but you will struggle for GW28 with arsenal blank and Adams suspension likely..

      lose Walcott >brunt/barton etc
