Roy Hodgson has today been unveiled as the new West Brom gaffer. This comes after popular boss Roberto Di Matteo lost was ousted earlier in the week. Although Michael Appleton has been placed in temporary control as caretaker manager and will oversee tomorrow’s clash with West Ham, Hodgson’s appointment will surely be greeted as a positive move and it’s effect on supporters and players could impact on the Baggies Gameweek prospects.

Hodgson’s new side have been in terrible form as of late, losing 7 of their last 9 Premier League games, after flying high during the first half of the season. Three Carlos Tevez goals last weekend have left the Baggies sitting just above the relegation zone by goal difference. The board clearly felt that removing Di Matteo from his role was the only possible way of staving off relegation.

The players will surely want to prove their worth to the new manager and a pivotal Fantasy Premier League Gameweek, that sees two home clashes against fellow relegation strugglers West Ham and Wolves, appears to present a perfect platform for improvement.

The Prospects

If West Brom are to forge any hopes of survival then these two fixtures are absolutely imperative. Clinch two victories and the gap is widened between themselves and the relegation zone. But if they find themselves without any points come February 20, they really will be in the thick of it. “Crucial” is the word rattling around the Hawthorns

West Brom will be grateful that these fixtures are on home turf as their home record is far stronger than their form on the road. The Baggies have picked up 18 of their 26 Premier League points at The Hawthorns. Eighteen goals have been scored and 19 conceded in front of a West Bromwich faithful; they will be hoping they can better that return over these games.

First opponents West Ham have performed fairly well on their recent travels, with a convincing 3-1 victory over Blackpool and a hard-fought 2-2 draw away against Everton. Avram Grant’s side have won 2 and drawn 5 games on the road, losing 6. They have also conceded a hefty 25 goals outside of Upton Park, so West Brom should certainly fancy their chances of boosting their goal tally.

Wolves meanwhile, have a woeful away record and the Baggies should profit here. Mick McCarthy’s men have managed just a single win and a draw away from home this season. But, having successfully picked the lock to Manchester United’s previously unbeatable record, they will surely be in high spirits.

The Likely Lads

One of the only positives to come out of West Brom’s abysmal season is the form of striker Peter Odemwingie. Relatively unknown prior to his transfer in the summer, the Nigerian international has excelled himself, performing above all expectations. Odemwingie has delivered an FPL return of 93 points, including 3 goals in his last 4 matches. Selection in tonight’s Scout Picks was always on the cards and he will carry a good few Fantasy hopes going into the weekend.

In midfield Chris Brunt stands out as the best prospect. The playmaker boasts an impressive array of (see the Members’ Area) and his role and influence is very much akin to that of Charlie Adam at Blackpool – most of the productive stuff goes through Brunt and his delivery at set-pieces is a major threat . Indeed, the Irishman is an excellent provider, assisting on 10 occasions this season. Though form is not on his, or West Brom’s, side as of late and Brunt has failed to notch an assist since the beginning of December.

Elsewhere West Brom really do offer slim pickings. Priced at just 4.5 on the FPL game and having picked-up 73 points this season, midfielder Jerome Thomas could be worth a shot. He has shown decent form but is likely to lose out to Brunt as an investment – unless a big differential is required.

Having conceded 48 goals and keeping 1 clean sheet so far this term, West Brom’s defence is best avoided. Although priced at 4.0, Gonzalo Jara does offer a value option and has threatened to contribute more in the final third. His Scout Pick selection tonight is a surprise, but given the clean sheet options available elsewhere, he forces his way into consideration.

Cheeky Punt

With an ownership of 0.4% and a price of 4.4, James Morrison could be worth a look if your budget is tight. The Scotland international has found the back of the net on 2 of his last 6 Premier League outings for the Baggies. His Members Stats are also fairly favourable and indicate that, in terms of efforts on goal, he can be a major threat to opponents.

Paddy Says…

Peter Odemwingie to score 3 or more goals in the Gameweek 7/1 (8.00)

I don't understand everyone dropping VDV like a hot potato, especially for the likes of Etherington, Barton, Nolan, Brunt etc

He's only missing one game more than ye thought a few days ago.
He should score well against Blackpool.
If fr some odd reason he doesn't feature against Blackpool. everyone's got a strong first sub like Nani or Tevez.
He won't drop in price much - his red flag will probably be removed on Tuesday following the Milan match which means he'll be price protected after that.
He'll cost a fortune to buy back.

coz he don't have a gw in gw28 and don't have a dgw in gw29...so players who are on wildcards are dropping him for cahill and young coz they have good fixtures coming up and cahill also have a dgw in gw29...they can always get vdv back if they want from gw30 onwards...

Yer i understand that, but these same RMWCTs yesterday all had VDV until he was red flagged and people started transfering him out in their droves.
I'm on the wildcard too, but i think VDV against Blackpool is a far better prospect than Cahill or Young this week.

I suppose, just seems like alot here are getting rid because of the scary red flag and transfers out quota. Im loaded up with 3 Arsenal (too much) so i'll be ditching Walcott for Cahill soon enough. As for Young i dont really rate him, dislike him as a player so i couldnt bring myself to root for him.

Final tweek to my fantasy team.

    Bentley or young?

-4 games (3 home) v 3 games (1 home + away against Blackpool) over the next 3 GW
-If the spurs game isn't rescheduled in GW28 I would have to take a hit to play 11 if I go Bentley
-I would want Young in after GW29 anyway, and I would have zero in the bank to cover price rises.

Haven't been around much this week - what was the consensus if you have Rooney and Nani - which do you bench? I'd think Nani, cuz Rooney is on penalties, but was wondering what the prevailing wisdom was.

    Nani Adam lennon walcott (vdv)
    rooney odem RVP(C)

I have my orig WC for GW28 to recover and prep for GW29.

Can't figure out whether to start Rooney or VDV and leave it up to fate if VDV plays the second game. Man is 4:1 favorites roughly. that's the stat that makes me want to start Rooney, who I have only had for three weeks.

My bench would be (Stockdale, VDV Vidic Coleman) if I start Rooney. I see feast (10 points) or famine (2 points)with Rooney and seven points from VDV if he plays 70 min in second game.

I've been pondering the following dilemma for hours and just cannot come to a decision. Any kind words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Start Vidic or K Toure or bring in a dgw defender?

I'm going to struggle to get a team out next week so think I'm probably best doing nothing this week and having 2 transfers to try to sort the mess out when I know the full story. The problem is that my nearest mini league rival has both Huth and R Johnson so I'd like to nullify their differential potential.

      Sillym

I had the same issue with my grandson's team, and I said 4 points for R.Johnson is not too bad, he has four games to make it up and as long as you don't have a hole in GW28, you are prepped for GW29. If it were other than a BIR defender or Eve defender, I would play Vidic and keep the four points.
What do you think about my starting Rooney over VDV above?

I think it comes down to whether you think United can get an early goal. City will be going there and try to keep things as tight as possible.
I see no reason why VDV won't be fit to play an active part in an open game at Blackpool.
For my money Rooney will only outscore VDV if United score early and force City to take some risks.

my strikers are campbell tevez and berba. that would leave me with

        DJ, Simpson, Bardsley, ivanovic, hughes,
        fabregas, adam, Vaughan, barton, Nani
        VanP, tevez, berba,

If you want Persie so badly and keep Berb then you have to do something like:

                Fab to Walcott

Not really happy with my WC team at the moment.

Arsenal, Brum and Spurs not having a fixture next week is annoying me, and I don’t want to take out Nani or VDV and then have to get them back as it’ll cost me 1.0 and .9 to get them back in.

    Szczesny (Begovic)

    Kelly (Coleman) (Clark) Carr Dawson

    Fabregas Adam Brunt VDV (Nani)

    Odemwingie RVP Tevez

I thinking of playing this team to try to maximise the double game week and then swapping Fabregas for Cahill and Odemwingie for Bent.

Cash isn’t an issue as I’ve got 6.0 in the bank but can’t see the value to spend it on at the moment.

Because I don't think the more expensive defenders are worth the additional cost.

I've never been a fan of paying more than I have to for defenders.

I'll use the cash in a week or two to upgrade midfielders and strikers.

But looking at it again, I wasn't planning on playing Vidic this weekend. I'm just worried that come GW 28 if Kolarov doesn't play I'm going to have to spend points to get another DF player if anyone were to pick up an injury. I always like not having to plan on spending points, just in case...

    Need advice guys.

    My team is currently:
    Al-Habsi
    R Johnson/Djourou/Coleman
    Nani/VdV/Fabregas/Adam
    DJ Campbell/RvP/Tevez
    Subs: Stockdale/Bramble/Rafael/N'Zogbia

1 transfer I will be doing is bringing in a keeper who will replace Al-Habsi. Who should I choose from Begovic/Foster bearing in mind Al-Habsi will play against Manchester United if I bring in Foster?
Also thinking of bringing in Nolan/Barton for VdV as that will give me a much needed extra player for next week. Newcastle also have some good fixtures.
Lastly, should I bring Huth (replacing Bramble) in for this gameweek and play him ahead of Coleman?
I only have 1 free transfer though

I have to take a hit next week to have a decent 11. I may as well do it this week and bring in a double gameweek player with a good fixture next week.
I am going to get Huth in next week, just wondering if he will outscore Coleman by 4 points this gameweek.

If Everton beat Chelsea in the FA Cup, do they miss GW 28?
I'm on my wild card and contemplating bringing in either Howard, or waiting and bringing in Baines. If I bring in Howard now, I would likely bring in Cahill for one of my midfielders.
