Roy Hodgson has today been unveiled as the new West Brom gaffer. This comes after popular boss Roberto Di Matteo lost was ousted earlier in the week. Although Michael Appleton has been placed in temporary control as caretaker manager and will oversee tomorrow’s clash with West Ham, Hodgson’s appointment will surely be greeted as a positive move and it’s effect on supporters and players could impact on the Baggies Gameweek prospects.

Hodgson’s new side have been in terrible form as of late, losing 7 of their last 9 Premier League games, after flying high during the first half of the season. Three Carlos Tevez goals last weekend have left the Baggies sitting just above the relegation zone by goal difference. The board clearly felt that removing Di Matteo from his role was the only possible way of staving off relegation.

The players will surely want to prove their worth to the new manager and a pivotal Fantasy Premier League Gameweek, that sees two home clashes against fellow relegation strugglers West Ham and Wolves, appears to present a perfect platform for improvement.

The Prospects

If West Brom are to forge any hopes of survival then these two fixtures are absolutely imperative. Clinch two victories and the gap is widened between themselves and the relegation zone. But if they find themselves without any points come February 20, they really will be in the thick of it. “Crucial” is the word rattling around the Hawthorns

West Brom will be grateful that these fixtures are on home turf as their home record is far stronger than their form on the road. The Baggies have picked up 18 of their 26 Premier League points at The Hawthorns. Eighteen goals have been scored and 19 conceded in front of a West Bromwich faithful; they will be hoping they can better that return over these games.

First opponents West Ham have performed fairly well on their recent travels, with a convincing 3-1 victory over Blackpool and a hard-fought 2-2 draw away against Everton. Avram Grant’s side have won 2 and drawn 5 games on the road, losing 6. They have also conceded a hefty 25 goals outside of Upton Park, so West Brom should certainly fancy their chances of boosting their goal tally.

Wolves meanwhile, have a woeful away record and the Baggies should profit here. Mick McCarthy’s men have managed just a single win and a draw away from home this season. But, having successfully picked the lock to Manchester United’s previously unbeatable record, they will surely be in high spirits.

The Likely Lads

One of the only positives to come out of West Brom’s abysmal season is the form of striker Peter Odemwingie. Relatively unknown prior to his transfer in the summer, the Nigerian international has excelled himself, performing above all expectations. Odemwingie has delivered an FPL return of 93 points, including 3 goals in his last 4 matches. Selection in tonight’s Scout Picks was always on the cards and he will carry a good few Fantasy hopes going into the weekend.

In midfield Chris Brunt stands out as the best prospect. The playmaker boasts an impressive array of (see the Members’ Area) and his role and influence is very much akin to that of Charlie Adam at Blackpool – most of the productive stuff goes through Brunt and his delivery at set-pieces is a major threat . Indeed, the Irishman is an excellent provider, assisting on 10 occasions this season. Though form is not on his, or West Brom’s, side as of late and Brunt has failed to notch an assist since the beginning of December.

Elsewhere West Brom really do offer slim pickings. Priced at just 4.5 on the FPL game and having picked-up 73 points this season, midfielder Jerome Thomas could be worth a shot. He has shown decent form but is likely to lose out to Brunt as an investment – unless a big differential is required.

Having conceded 48 goals and keeping 1 clean sheet so far this term, West Brom’s defence is best avoided. Although priced at 4.0, Gonzalo Jara does offer a value option and has threatened to contribute more in the final third. His Scout Pick selection tonight is a surprise, but given the clean sheet options available elsewhere, he forces his way into consideration.

Cheeky Punt

With an ownership of 0.4% and a price of 4.4, James Morrison could be worth a look if your budget is tight. The Scotland international has found the back of the net on 2 of his last 6 Premier League outings for the Baggies. His Members Stats are also fairly favourable and indicate that, in terms of efforts on goal, he can be a major threat to opponents.

Nani seems the most sensible, City will go into the game defense heavy trying to get a goal on the break. Seems like it'll be a low scoring game if there is a goal.

    Conundrum:

I have Szczesny, Cesc and RVP.
Major rival has Clichy and RVP.

I was always going to captain Cesc but seeing as he will certainly captain RVP, should I do the same and hope Cesc does him damage?

It's quite an important mini-league and any lead is vital as we have similar enough teams.

So lads abit of help would go down well.
Looking to make one move probably.
    Either 1. vidic > r johnson or 2. VDV > nolan /brunt

    Squad
    Fost, stock
    (coleman), Vidic,Djourou,Kelly,Simpson
    Vdv, (nani),Fabs,adam,cahill
    (Tevez), RVP, odem

Favoring 2 over 1 as should arse- tot be off ill have 10 out field players,

SO basically its sell vidic and have 8 outfield players next week
    or
Sell VDV and have 10 outfield players next week. Aand the free move gets me a full 11.

    What we think?

Stockdale is limiting my DGW options also. I'd keep Vidic and play him as he's always a goal threat. You also never know, Everton may beat Chelsea in the FA Cup and Man U's DGW is preserved.

I'd bring in Young or Barton for VDV, personally.

Can't decide between Walcott and Arshavin :\

Arshavin set to rise tonight, Walcott in form.

Any arsenal fans reckon Arshavin will play the 180 mins? He had an international right?

Does anyone else think this DGW is going to be rubbish for points compared to the last one? I wont include Charlie Adam because everyone has him but here are my thoughts on the other doubles -

Birmingham - rubbish attack and even their defence is suspect at home. Playing two fairly 'robust' teams that arent going to just roll over especially Newcastle.
Spurs - goals have dried up bigtime and are both away with only Blackpool looking good. Sunderland could shut them out.
West Brom - its Roy again and one of their matches is against Wolves who are sporadic and could easily do them over going by recent performances so only West Ham as a good matchup.

This leaves Arsenal who I think will do well but obviosuly even there its a rotation risk with Barca waiting.

Also three of these teams have a blank in GW28 so the points will just be lost then.

I just have a bad feeling about this and I wouldnt load up too heavily on any of the DGW teams as there are a lot of single gameweek players with really good matchups for points. If you are looking for a swing in pts for your minileagues I suggest saving the transfers/hits for GW28-29 as thats where ground will be made/lost.

I think this is going to be a brilliant gameweek, not so much in a points-fest way, but this one and GW28 could be season deciders for that last push on minileague topspots.
There won't be many DGW for so many teams left, and with the trap of next week it logically should pay off for the people who are paying most attention to the fixtures. Ie. Nerdatrons like me. Hopefully anyway. 🙂

Hope so. GW24 really worked out well for me and really established my lead at the top of my main mini league.

If I can do well these next 2 weeks which I have planned for hopefully the money is mine!

Yeah I agree with you in terms of GW28-29 being season deciders for minileague.

I think in terms of massive scores everyone got last DGW I dont think it will match it due to gains being wiped out by hits/less than 11 players next week and also random rotation before champs league.

Ive managed to regain the lead in my minileague but its not much so need to stay alert next few weeks and not make mistakes...nerdatron behaviour is essential!!

Thing I love most about big dgw's is not only do you get handsome rewards for proper planning, you then make even more ground thanks to others over eagerness e.g. getting rid of good players with good fixtures to get rubbish players from rubbish teams for the simple fact they have a dgw.
Stoke away v arsenal is a bad fixture, stoke away v birmingham is a bad fixture, yet when you put them together into one gw every man and his dog wants some delap love 😛

CravenA I have the players you mentioned and agree with you on their potential but only them. I have spent the last few days worried about who to get in from Bentley, Brunt, Lennon, DJ, Gardner, Jara, etc and then just thought sod it! Why the hell am I actually considering players like this...Gardner/Jara/Bentley would never get in my team in a million years I cant believe I am contemplating them!

Someone else on here said you should never put a player into your team in a DGW that you wouldnt normally put in....I think thats true!
