With Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Stoke at the Emirates last Wednesday closing the gap at the top of the Premier League to a single point, Man United will be looking to re-establish their lead at the summit by taking advantage of their game in hand over Arsene Wenger’s side this upcoming gameweek.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side first travel to Wigan on Saturday, but a visit to Stamford Bridge next Tuesday evening- where Chelsea will surely be fighting tooth and nail to battle back into the title race themselves- suggests this will be anything but a straightforward double gameweek. Two wins, however, would take United seven points clear at the top and is motive enough for last season’s runners-up in a week that should see plenty Fantasy Investment for the Old Trafford side‘s players, particularly with Arsenal, Tottenham and Birmingham all without league matches this week.

The Prospects

United have not exactly shone on their travels this term; they’ve managed a mere three wins from twelve away games and chalked up just one clean sheet in their last six on the road, with injuries to the likes of Rio Ferdinand leaving them under-strength at the back. Fergie’s side will be looking to recover from their last away game, the unexpected 2-1 defeat at Molinuex that brought their unbeaten league record to an end.

Wigan are undefeated in three league games but are as poor defensively at the DW Stadium as they are away from home; Roberto Martinez’s side have kept just two clean sheets at home all season, with the last one coming in gameweek 13. With the games coming thick and fast (United are also away to Liverpool next weekend) this match will surely see the “weaker” of Fergie’s team selections this gameweek.

Chelsea’s last domestic game saw Everton end their two-year reign as FA Cup holders and, with the champions currently twelve points behind United, Carlo Ancelotti will be desperate to regain some pride in what has become a disappointing defence of the league title. Chelsea will be cheered by their winning Champions League performance this midweek in Copenhagen and, with Fernando Torres on board to face nemesis Nemanja Vidic, will be desperate to prevent United potentially going eighteen points ahead, a scenario that could unfold if the visitors arrive with a win at Wigan already under their belt.

The Likely Lads

It’s practically impossible to second-guess Sir Alex Ferguson at the best of times but with this gameweek coming on the back of a tough Champions League match at Marseille, predicting who will start both games is pretty much a shot in the dark. You would expect at least six, with a fair degree of certainty: Nani, Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Edwin Van der Saar and Darren Fletcher, with the first three clearly the most likely for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) returns.

With Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans today both confirmed as injured until next weekend, Chris Smalling (a subsequent Scout Pick choice of Mark’s for this gameweek) also looks a near-certainty to play both matches, unless Wes Brown gets a game.

Fergie’s recent decision to bench Dimitar Berbatov for the home match with Man City now casts doubt on the Bulgarian’s chances of starting the Chelsea match, in particular, despite his goalscoring exploits this season. Berbatov will surely start at Wigan, though, and as Robin Van Persie showed last gameweek, it sometimes only needs one game for an in-form forward to outscore team mates who go on to play both match.

Cheeky Punt

Having missed the recent European tie, Ryan Giggs could well be fit for the Wigan match tomorrow. The Welshman has been an integral part of the United first-team since just before New Year (he’s started eight of their last ten league games) and has picked up 1 goal, 3 assists and 2 Bonus Points in his last five. Our Members can see for themselves how similar he’s been to Nani in “Distribution and Influence” since the turn of the year, from gameweek 21, though he’s not been quite so prolific in front of goal.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Am playing my original WC today. First time, maybe last time player.

    Begovic (Foster)
    Huth Coleman Baines Vidic (R.Johnson)
    Nani Cahill Barton O'Hara (VDV)
    Rooney Tevez (Zigic)

    1. Huth for Luis? prepares for Chelsea's DGW33, but Huth has at least three good games ahead (WB, whm, NEW).

    2. Any reason to keep RVP and not get Tevez and play a 5.0+ second FWD? Saha's injury seems too risky compared to Baines.
    I lose three tenths on RVP who comes back GW31 with Djourou and Nasri back in GW30.

    3. O'Hara (BLP, TOT) or Pennant (WB, Whm) plays one game?

    This basically gives six for the DGW29, which if it doesn't happen I am TOAST. Then, Djourou, Nasri, RVP, Dawson and either Torres/Luis come in for DGW33.

    Thanks, and thanks for the advice of a couple folks who said "keep your wildcard", a few games could be snowed out, causing DGW. It was a long slog.

        So,choice is:

        1. Luis and Pennant/Jarvis/5.1 or

        2. Huth and YaYa Toure/Parker/Gutierrez 5.7.

    Ok, need badly help. I've got 8 players out (VdV, Adam, Walcott, Fab, RvP. R. Johson, Foster, Stockdale).

    So i'm thinking:

    VdV->A.Young
    Adam-> Barton
    Walcott->Cahill (gamble)

    8 point hit. Worth it? Should I even considering 12 pts for keep?

          Not really Garg 🙂
          Not a fan of Nolan in FPL. He is like a midfield version of a more erratic Darren Bent. He gets his goals in gluts too so you have to be lucky to benefit.
          He doesn't influence the game enough to get BP's, assists are an extreme rarity, the only time he would get bonus points is after one of his rare goal scoring sprees.
          Nah, wouldn't touch him for my side, a poor FPL mans Tim Cahill.

                Well it is a fickle business on here, to be fair he has been poor by his own standards this season but all you can do is play the fixtures. A midfielder with great fixtures who takes set-pieces and penalties is still a good pick, hopefully his form will turn around and we get to wear our smug hats.
                Won't be (c)'ing him again though.

              I know it was a fleeting thought. Cahill is who I really want but the doubt puts me off I am going for Young. Question now is whether to do 4pt hit and go for Meireles for Adam this would give me 12 players but having 12 players when there's doubts over Kelly.

            i think i'm going to take a punt on cahill anyway. seems odd to take a 4 point hit for someone who might not play, but he's the only option i could see as long term (good fixtures til end of season). i really am not keen to get in young, etc who i would certainly look to remove soon after anyway.. plus by having cahill in already, it frees me up to bring in others next week without a hit. The problem is if cahill misses tomorrow it will potentially affect your h2h, but nonetheless if you bring in young theres a good chance you'll need to take a hit later on anyway to get him out - once the likes of vdv, carroll, chelseas good run of fixtures around gw33 or so all come in to play where you'd probably have transfers in mind anyway.

            oh i see you have young already 😀 my apologies. he's ideally be the one you'd bring cahill for? obviously not yet though as youngs gw is quite good too.

    Hi, what are everyones thoughts on:

    A) (-4) Odemwingie-> Rooney and Fabregas -> Barton/ Yaya, which gives me 10 players

    B) (-4)Fabregas -> Silva and Djourou -> Any 6m Defender, which gives me 11 players

    So basically would you rather play 10 players which includes Rooney or play 11 players not including Rooney?

    Had the opinion that Berba is not necessary as he is likely to start only one game. But now I fancy a -4p hit for Odem>Berba.

    Could anyone please agree on this or don you think it's not worth it?

      A. I think I'll go Silva, as I don't want to risk Cahill not playing. You can get Cahill for the double next week.

      B. Bosingwa>Kolarov for -4 should be worth it in the long run

      And those are the two best defensive options - I'm in the same boat. I'm edging towards Kolarov. City have two home games in a row; Stoke go to West Ham next week.

        but Kol just keeps getting 50 odd minutes and i was really so angry GW 21. If there was a delete button i'd have wiped my team out after that GW. I'm thinking Huth as it covers my rivals as most of them have him. Stoke could keep a CS next week at West Ham too, or is that wishful thinking? Huth would be a goal threat there too, or is that just double wishful thinking?
