With Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Stoke at the Emirates last Wednesday closing the gap at the top of the Premier League to a single point, Man United will be looking to re-establish their lead at the summit by taking advantage of their game in hand over Arsene Wenger’s side this upcoming gameweek.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side first travel to Wigan on Saturday, but a visit to Stamford Bridge next Tuesday evening- where Chelsea will surely be fighting tooth and nail to battle back into the title race themselves- suggests this will be anything but a straightforward double gameweek. Two wins, however, would take United seven points clear at the top and is motive enough for last season’s runners-up in a week that should see plenty Fantasy Investment for the Old Trafford side‘s players, particularly with Arsenal, Tottenham and Birmingham all without league matches this week.

The Prospects

United have not exactly shone on their travels this term; they’ve managed a mere three wins from twelve away games and chalked up just one clean sheet in their last six on the road, with injuries to the likes of Rio Ferdinand leaving them under-strength at the back. Fergie’s side will be looking to recover from their last away game, the unexpected 2-1 defeat at Molinuex that brought their unbeaten league record to an end.

Wigan are undefeated in three league games but are as poor defensively at the DW Stadium as they are away from home; Roberto Martinez’s side have kept just two clean sheets at home all season, with the last one coming in gameweek 13. With the games coming thick and fast (United are also away to Liverpool next weekend) this match will surely see the “weaker” of Fergie’s team selections this gameweek.

Chelsea’s last domestic game saw Everton end their two-year reign as FA Cup holders and, with the champions currently twelve points behind United, Carlo Ancelotti will be desperate to regain some pride in what has become a disappointing defence of the league title. Chelsea will be cheered by their winning Champions League performance this midweek in Copenhagen and, with Fernando Torres on board to face nemesis Nemanja Vidic, will be desperate to prevent United potentially going eighteen points ahead, a scenario that could unfold if the visitors arrive with a win at Wigan already under their belt.

The Likely Lads

It’s practically impossible to second-guess Sir Alex Ferguson at the best of times but with this gameweek coming on the back of a tough Champions League match at Marseille, predicting who will start both games is pretty much a shot in the dark. You would expect at least six, with a fair degree of certainty: Nani, Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Edwin Van der Saar and Darren Fletcher, with the first three clearly the most likely for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) returns.

With Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans today both confirmed as injured until next weekend, Chris Smalling (a subsequent Scout Pick choice of Mark’s for this gameweek) also looks a near-certainty to play both matches, unless Wes Brown gets a game.

Fergie’s recent decision to bench Dimitar Berbatov for the home match with Man City now casts doubt on the Bulgarian’s chances of starting the Chelsea match, in particular, despite his goalscoring exploits this season. Berbatov will surely start at Wigan, though, and as Robin Van Persie showed last gameweek, it sometimes only needs one game for an in-form forward to outscore team mates who go on to play both match.

Cheeky Punt

Having missed the recent European tie, Ryan Giggs could well be fit for the Wigan match tomorrow. The Welshman has been an integral part of the United first-team since just before New Year (he’s started eight of their last ten league games) and has picked up 1 goal, 3 assists and 2 Bonus Points in his last five. Our Members can see for themselves how similar he’s been to Nani in “Distribution and Influence” since the turn of the year, from gameweek 21, though he’s not been quite so prolific in front of goal.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

i will love it kevin keegan style if cahill doesn't make tommorow's game and then everton draw with reading in the fa cup.

I got him in two weeks ago so was gutted when he started on the bench against Blackpool, was also gutted when he missed a sitter first half against Bolton. If he doesn't start tomorrow and Everton draw with Reading then this will probably go down as my worst transfer all season.

With Cahill such a doubt I would be holding off this week to be honest, I would take the loss on RVP this week and do RVP OUT Rooney IN so you can field full team without hit.

If Cahill doesn't make it, you only have 10, the ship may have already sailed with Meireles I think, but that is just my view, B would be option I would go for if you simply can't lose RVP.

You have Young, Barton and Nani which are most peoples targets for this week, so you are pretty well covered, the general consensus is that the midfield options are low to the ground this week, and at least if you bring in Rooney you get a DGW player and a guaranteed starter, if Cahill misses out tomorrow you only have 10 as I said. Next week then do Fabregas OUT Cahill IN, and Rooney is a straight swap back to RVP the following week if needs be.

If it helps, I did Fabs/Walcott and Odemwingie to Barton/Giggs and Rooney, Fabs move to Barton funded everything, but I would hold off if you want to go to Cahill, but you will see I didn't hang around with the move either, 8 point hit, left RVP on bench though.

Let me share some seriously tedious shit with you.......

One of my main problems this season, failing to pick the right cheap midfielders. Below are all the midfielders I've owned this season under the price of 6 million, excluding Charlie Adam who is an obvious exception. The first number beside each player is their points per game when they've represented my side (so points on my bench aren't included), and the second number is their points per start throughout the entirety of the season (other than for Dorrans and Petrov who haven't made enough starts).

    Petrov: 2.5 (N/A)
    Dorrans: 3 (N/A)
    Davies: 2.8 (3.9)
    Etherington: 3.4 (4.5)
    N'Zogbia: 3.8 (4.6)
    Lee: 1.3 (3.5)
    Yaya: 3.3 (4.0)
    Brunt: 1.5 (3.7)

Astonishingly, every single cheap midfielder I've owned has scored below their season's average whilst in my side, despite them inevitably having had more favourable fixtures for the games I had them, that's why I had them ffs!

Pretty depressing reading, at least for me it is!

I always sleep through the deadlines and I never really dream about my players. I still think about my team too much though and also my college work has gone down the pan since my 'addiction' to FPL.

I dream about it the whole f*cking time! Although I think that's probably more down to the fact that the last thing I do every single night is coming on here to check things, so it's basically the last thing on my mind every night....

                  .....which is equally pathetic. 😀

Seems like you are not holding a player long enough...the grass is always greener elsewhere...so you are chasing the points rather then waiting for them. Get Barton now and hold him for 4 games and see what he does...

Hmmm, I don't tend to rely on the budget midfielders as much, bench fodder, that's it. I had Etherington & Nzog for short spells but that's all and Petrov for GW1 then WC.
You've had a raw deal though for sure.

This for a 12 pointer. Ya or Na. Im edging towards Ya.
Kolarov alone has the potential for a 12 point haul this week.

    Begovic
    Kolarov, Vidic, Simpson,Colema
    Nani(C), Arteta,Cahill,Nolan
    Tevez, Berbatov
    Foster,RVP,Djourou,Adam.

0.1 from affording Young but his form is as bad as Arteta and maybe worth the punt on Micky alone. These are the moves
    Stockdale Begovic - no brainer
Kelly - Kolarov - West ham to score and Kol has huge potential
Fabs -Arteta 3 games in 2 weeks punt and then Nasri/Walcott
Odem - Berbatov- dgw and want longterm

    What we think gents?

Well i'm going with Silva i think. Hardly set the league a light this season but he's in decent nick and has a couple of nice home games. Like you say the options this week are rather limited and i already have Young and Kolarov. Likely team this week is:

          Harper
          Olsson Huth Kolarov Coleman
          Silva Nani Barton Young
          Tevez Odem
