With three sides missing from our schedule and a double fixture for United at Wigan and Chelsea, gameweek 28 is an odd, two-headed beast that may well take some taming.

On the surface we look to have a few home-bankers that should offer strong returns. A deeper look at these fixtures tells a different story – City for example are at Eastlands against a Fulham side who have tightened up immeasurably in recent weeks. Our Members can view Team Stats for Defending over the past 4 gameweeks and see just how they compare – in a nutshell, Mark Hughes’ side will provide ample resistance to Carlos Tevez and pals.

Similarly Villa at home to Blackburn looks a strong bet but the visiting side are an unpredictable animal and Houllier’s outfit have struggled to provide a sustained attacking threat; Villa have scored more than one goal in just a couple of their last seven league games; the 1-1 draw at Blackpool last time out was hardly convincing.

Then we have Newcastle at home to Bolton. The Mapgies have form but then Bolton bring a record that shows five clean sheets in their last six matches in all competitions. Like Fulham, the Trotters have found a method of stemming the tide – Alan Pardew’s side will have to work for their three points at St James’ Park.

For my money, Gameweek 28 will struggle for goals. United should earn a couple at Wigan, while there appears to be attacking returns in the games at Molineux and the Britannia; beyond this, we could well be looking back on the gameweek and lamenting the loss of Van Persie and Van der Vaart in a very big way.

This week’s Scout Picks presented a tough proposition then. There are returns to be had – but statistics and form suggests we could be in for a significant lull after the 100+ totals from double gameweek 27.

The Defence

Steve Harper
The Newcastle defence has earned consecutive clean sheets at Blackburn and Birmingham – evidence enough to convince us to take a punt on a keeper that carries a 4.3 value in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Harper faces up against Bolton and an in-from Daniel Sturridge at St James’ Park and Newcastle have been known to combust in front of their own fans. That could well be the case again, but given his price tag, Harper presents value with the promise of Save Point returns at the very least.

Leighton Baines
The Everton defence may well be breached again at Goodison against a Sunderland outfit who have discovered the knack of scoring, even without the talents of Darren Bent. Baines however, also offers serious potential going forward with a seemingly endless supply of crosses from the left flank. He’s also promoted himself in the pecking order when it comes to set-plays having stroked a beauty into the corner of Petr Cech’s net last weekend. Seamus Coleman is your option if Baines is too rich for you, but the left-back may well outscore the Irishman, despite the latter’s role on the right-wing.

Aleksandar Kolarov
A gamble given Roberto Mancini’s propensity to shuffle his back line, the Serbian remains a major temptation due to his recent role on the left side of a front three. They may not materialise against Fulham at Eastlands, but such is Kolarov’s value at set-plays, I see him retained within the starting XI. Goals could be at a premium against Fulham, a side who have learned the art of defending deep away from home which has made them a significant barrier in recent weeks. I’m backing a City cleanie with Kolarov’s left-peg delivery a possible factor in a narrow City win.

Robert Huth
The towering German has been a Fantasy revelation this season, converting his considerable threat from Stoke’s well-drilled set-plays into a tally of 6 league goals. Huth will face a West Brom side this weekend who are amongst the weakest teams in the league when it comes to combatting the aerial threat. I’d expect Stoke and Huth to cause major issues for Roy Hodgson’s side and a seventh goal of the season looks a decent prospect.

Chris Smalling
Once Rio Ferdinand was confirmed as missing both the trip to Wigan and Tuesday’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, it immediately promoted Chris Smalling in our thinking. He is of course, just a short-term measure, but the potential or prolonged issues for Ferdinand and a price tag of just 4.3 in the FPL for United’s two fixtures makes him almost impossible to ignore. Smalling has also demonstrated outstanding form since being drafted in alongside Nemanja Vidic and, while the Chelsea encounter will be tough, at least one clean sheet and maybe even some Bonus, may well materialise from the gameweek.

The Midfield

Nani
The Untied winger tops or current Captain Poll by a large margin and looks nailed on to start both of United’s two fixtures in the gameweek. The weekend trip to Wigan looks by far the most profitable and United will be heavily backed to notch at least a couple against the Latics defence – even if they do have to combat the newly laid surface. Nani has been the creative spark and chief tormentor for many weeks now and looks the most likely to come away with United attacking returns over the gameweek. It takes balls or a damn good reason to go beyond 11.30am on Saturday without him. I don’t have the former and I’m struggling to find the latter.

Joey Barton
While I don’t see too many goals at St James’ Park, I can see Alan Pardew’s buoyant Magpies nicking the three points. Barton could well be key to any victory – his current form and performance stats certainly suggest that, from midfield, he and Jonas Gutiérrez are the leading contenders to provide the spark or final ball that could prove decisive. Combine Barton’s set-piece delivery and spot-kick duties with his dominance in terms of touches and passes in the Newcastle midfield, and he looks the most likely to emerge with attacking points and Bonus.

Ashley Young
While Stewart Downing and Darren Bent also present attacking options in the Villa lineup, Young remains the most influential force in Gerard Houllier’s outfit – contributing both goal attempts and crosses and key passes. He’s also a major force at set-plays and will be expected to take on spot-kick duties – both of which could be a factor. The possible absence of Blackburn’s Chris Samba through illness only strengthens Villa and Young’s potential this weekend and with injuries at the back, Houllier’s side may well need at least a couple of strikes to earn three points.

Raul Meireles
The fourth midfield spot was reserved for Everton’s Tim Cahill, but continued doubts over his fitness means that he is a gamble going into the Goodison clash with Sunderland. Rivals for this position included Jon Walters (on my bench) and Kieran Richardson, but Meireles gets it off the back of sustained form and the fact that Liverpool look likely to spoil West Ham’s clean sheet at Upton Park. Meireles has enjoyed a remarkable run of goals and is also a creative force in the Liverpool midfield, both from open play and set-pieces. Steven Gerrard’s return could see a possible change of role but regardless, the Portuguese looks a strong enough proposition.

The Forwards

Carlos Tevez
Such is the influence of Carlos Tevez on City’s attacking play, even the prospect of deployed in a wide role to accommodate Edin Dzeko, against a Fulham defence that will provide a stubborn barrier, is enough to warrant his inclusion. Together with David Silva’s trickery from midfield and Kolarov’s delivery from the left, Tevez is likely to be the City’s main route to picking the lock on Mark Hughes’ defence.

Dimitar Berbatov
Three Untied players in a gameweek which includes two away games may seem folly but, after scanning the fixture list, my view is that United are one of few teams who have the chance of return more than 2 goals in the gameweek. I see Alex Ferguson’s men returning points in both games and, while Berbatov is not assured of starts – I feel he will get the nod in a 4-4-2 at Wigan and in a 4-5-1 at Stamford Bridge, where Wayne Rooney could well find himself out wide. That, and his price tag, gives Berbatov the edge for me. A close run thing and perhaps a gamble.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

i have been pulling my hair out for this next gw. it's not like i even gambled and bought players just for the double gw we just had. so obviously all arsenal players on my team are on the bench, but then i have vdv (blank fixture) and adam (suspended). but it gets even better. i have kelly who is a doubtful, and i jumped the gun and bought cahill before his injury, so worst case scenario, i have 7 players to play... what makes my transfers even harder is that i bought most of these players a while ago, so their price is pretty inflated, and if i did get rid of any of them, i'd want them right back. here's my team currently:

    al habsi (foster)
    coleman, kelly, huth, luiz (djourou)
    cahill, adam, vdv, nani (fab)
    odem, tevez (rvp)
    with 1.4 in the bank.

i really didn't want to take any hits this week, but i think there is just no other option. i think for the most part, this team is fairly solid (even until the end of the season), so if i took anyone out and wanted them back in, i probably couldn't afford them back. the only players i would consider trading this week is adam (because of his suspension), and fab (because of blank fixture and only 0.1 price rise since i bought him). so would you take a gamble on trading adam and fab out, even though i will be buying fab back the next week, and adam as soon as he comes back? (it just seems like i'd be taking too many hits)

sorry for the wall of text, but any reply would be appreciated, as i'm over here lol

Yep Fab and Adam out are the best options it seems. I wouldn't say Fab is essential now with RVP, and Adam is safe to keep out of your team for a fair few weeks.

Take out Djourou aswell for Kolorov if you want to get a full squad or even gamble on Rooney/Berba for Odemwingie.

The problem this week are the doubts over Kelly/Cahill so you need to be sure your squad is reasonably full of starters.

I'm sure Kelly will play - it sounds purely precautionary don't you think?
And why are people so keen to offload Djourou? He's a cheap defender, certain starter, great fixtures after this week!

Only because of when Vermaelen returns Djourou may not be first choice.

      You're determined to keep VDV?

Both VDV & Fabs are potential tradeouts to me (see my team above). Both have injury concerns, both will likely be rested due to higher priorities (Champions League!) and neither are showing particularly impressive form, although we've all got a bit of money on them.

Looking at the options, A Young is coming into good fixtures and has set pieces plus his advanced role to guide returns. Silva is another option (although I've got Tevez & Yaya so unlikely to get a 3rd). Even Dempsey is an option

I would sell Adam and get him back when he has several home games on the bounce (GW33 I think). Fabregas may not feature against Sunderland, so sell him - you can always buy Nasri if you are desperate for Arse mid representation, although I would be tempted to wait a week longer for wba. Your team is very similar to mine and I am still undecided who to get in for Fabregas. It will be one of Silva or Young I think, although neither instills me with much confidence.

Seems crazy to get rid of Wingie, but I might do so for Rooney and play with 9.

Can't agree with all the Ashley Young love at all. He's enjoying his new free roll in the hole??? B*llocks!! Stand by for 2 points for playing and -1 for a yellow giving him a big fat total score of 1. That's about his level.

Tevez worked his legs off yesterday. Even with his inhumane energy he must be knackered. Presence of Dzeko may or may not help him. I mean, its not a bad choice, but Nani has the insurance of a second fixture to fall back on if he does badly in the first

Been away all week, cannot believe the situation with injuries and suspensions, really hampered my transfer plans.

Q: What is the deal with Kelly's yellow flag? Actually something to worry about.

I have a few different thoughts on transfers, which of these are sensible, I do have 2 free transfers.

    a) Djourou>Smalling
    b) Adam>YayaToure/ Silva
    c) Fabregas>Arteta/Cahill
    d) RVP>Rooney/Berbatov

Need to make 2 transfers to have 11 with 0.8 in the bank

Initial plan is Adam & Fabregas>Silva & Cahill, although that would mean having to take a 4 point hit to get back Fabregas.

    Thoughts/comments?

    Begovic
    Coleman / Huth / Kelly / Vidic
    Nani / Young / Barton / Meireles
    Tevez / Berbatov

Bench: Foster / RVP / Adam / Johnson

Transfers: 8 Point Hit (0.3 M in bank)
    Odemwingie > Berbatov
    Fabregas > Meireles
    Walcott > Young

Kelly being doubtful is worrying as that would put me down to 10, really don’t want to take another hit. Apart from a captain, am I missing anything?

Better would be Walcott > Barton then Fabregas > Rooney.

You never know though and Berba might get 5 goals or something, but I would say Rooney is a safer bet.

    Starting 11.
    Al-Habsi
    Coleman, Hangeland, Terry
Meireles, Nani (c), N Zogbia, Cahill,

    Bench: Evatt

That hasn't cost me any points. Is it worth a transfer to lose 4?

sorry for repost, but it was 2nd last comment on last page

i have been pulling my hair out for this next gw. it’s not like i even gambled and bought players just for the double gw we just had. so obviously all arsenal players on my team are on the bench, but then i have vdv (blank fixture) and adam (suspended). but it gets even better. i have kelly who is a doubtful, and i jumped the gun and bought cahill before his injury, so worst case scenario, i have 7 players to play… what makes my transfers even harder is that i bought most of these players a while ago, so their price is pretty inflated, and if i did get rid of any of them, i’d want them right back. here’s my team currently:

    al habsi (foster)
    coleman, kelly, huth, luiz (djourou)
    cahill, adam, vdv, nani (fab)
    odem, tevez (rvp)
    with 1.4 in the bank.

i really didn’t want to take any hits this week, but i think there is just no other option. i think for the most part, this team is fairly solid (even until the end of the season), so if i took anyone out and wanted them back in, i probably couldn’t afford them back. the only players i would consider trading this week is adam (because of his suspension), and fab (because of blank fixture and only 0.1 price rise since i bought him). so would you take a gamble on trading adam and fab out, even though i will be buying fab back the next week, and adam as soon as he comes back? (it just seems like i’d be taking too many hits)

oh it was, and i thank you for it, but the more opinions the better right 🙂 but the question is, do you think the hit i would be taking justifies my transfers? so far, i can only man up to make 2 transfers: odem to rooney, and fab to barton. i dont think i could take any more hits than that. but what do you think about those transfers?

Thanks, but if you field less than 11 players, taking the hits aren't so bad. If you took another 4 point hit for a player who isn't starting, the worst you would be looking at is 2 points less if that player only scores 2. So if you did Adam to someone like Young it is more than likely worth it since Adam is out for 2 gameweeks and returns to away fixtures.

but remember i want to buy these players back right, so i would take another 8 pts to bring back fab, and odem (although i will be trading him at some pt), and i would lose another 4 pts if i wanted adam to young. so i see what your saying, but overall, i think it would be difficult to see a positive return after taking such a hit.

if it was a one time trade (like if i wanted to keep young instead of adam), than i agree 110% with what your saying, but because i want him back, it's that much harder.

You wont need to buy Odem back, and I don't think Fabs is essential any more as long as RVP plays. Adam is out for a few weeks and Young has nice fixtures. This will be a very undecided gameweek but you need a decent team and I think getting Rooney in is a gamble which could pay off nicely.

If you plan on getting Fabs back next week then you should probably keep him but sell Adam still.

well if i want rooney, i have to trade fab. the thing is, i was planning on doing fab to walcott/nasri, but just never found a good enough excuse to do it. and the thing with rooney is that he's such a gamble this year, so i don't know if i would want to keep him in after this gw.

In a way, not doing a 4 point hit is like bringing in an 11th player who scores 4 points.

I'm keeping Adam as I've got 0.5m sitting on him - he scores points whether home & away (in fact, like Blackpool I think he does better away).

So I'll be doing Fab > AYoung. Still thinking about Djourou/Kelly to Kolarov aand/or VDV > Arteta/Silva

i could do the exact same trades you are about to do, but are you planning on bringing them back on your team, and also, when did you buy vdv? if i sold him now, i would lose so much, and i probably wouldn't have the funds yo buy him back

I bought VDV a long time ago, would lose 0.4m. Given his price that's a better option than Adam (lose 0.5m, and cheaper to start with).

But I am leaning to Kelly > Kolarov. Kelly's fixtures aren't great and he may start to get rested too.

Silva, Cahill and Young seem like the only decent options in midfield at the moment... I need just one for Walcott, and I'm going towards Silva at the moment - Cahill is a doubt and I have a feeling that the DGW will be off anyway, and having an Aston Villa midfielder is not much better than having a Birmingham one due to the lack of goals they seem to score.

if you've taken a 4 pt hit aalready and can field 11 then I'd stop there.

Whoever you replace Odem with has to score 6 pts to make it worthwhile because of the hit. So unless that player scores, or assists and gets a bonus, you won't really have gained anything.

8.8million to spend on a midfielder, probably only until the return of VDV, so 3 weeks ish? Thinking Arteta, Younf, Silva. Thoughts?

I don't particularly like those players fantasy terms, but if you have to pick I would go for Young on fixtures. If he produces nothing, then I will have to go back to Adam when he returns.

Point he's making is a valid one. Evans was the bee's knees last year and is now a bit of a liability. Same thing could happen to Smalling, even if he's currently merking like his sensei.

True, but I'm pretty sure that Evans went from fairly shite, to suddenly being God-like. Whereas Smalling hasn't really has a bad game so far (excluding one's where he's partnered Evans where most of the fault lay with the Northern Irishman).

Obviously Smalling could still be shite, but I still think he looks a more naturally gifted centre-half than Evans ever did.

And you're supposed to be a United fan????

Evans was seen as the second coming which was strengthened by him being part of the side that kept countless clean sheets, don't try and make out that he was always looked upon as mediocre.
