Wayne Rooney could yet face a three-match ban for the clash with Wigan’s James McCarthy in yesterday’s 4-0 win.

The much-publicised incident saw Wigan awarded a free-kick for the collision between Rooney and McCarthy, with referee Mark Clattenburg claiming that the “challenge” was nothing more than “a coming together”.

Given that Clattenburg acknowledged the incident by awarding the free-kick, Rooney could escape without further FA sanctions, despite replays showing that the United striker led with his elbow. The same replays appeared to show that Clattenburg was watching the ball at the point Rooney and McCarthy collided; should Clattenburg claim that he saw the clash but missed the use of the elbow, the FA would be free to take matters further.

Today’s articles even claim that, if Clattenburg’s report allows the FA to investigate the incident, a three-match ban could be pushed through quickly under the new fast-track process; that would prevent Rooney from facing Chelsea in the league on Tuesday night.

Given that FA regulations state that charges and appeals are required to take place “within three working days” – this would seem somewhat unlikely.

We will hear plenty more on Rooney and “Elbowgate” from the media over the next 24-hours. Clattenburg’s report and a likely statement from the FA will be the crucial developments however.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Whatever people say, Colly and Prior always seem to bottle it when there's a collapse for us- at least Bresnan and Yardy always play in the same way, regardless of the situation.......

Yes thanks, I'm a season ticket holder at Portsmouth. Off the top of my head, I've been to these non-prem grounds - Bradford, Crewe, Port Vale, Charlton, Palace, Leeds, Forest, QPR.

And plenty of others that I can't think of right now.

It was a genuine question - not to make a point.

Leeds fans (as much as i hate the team) are awesome imo - some of the best i've seen. In general atmosphere in Championship/League one games is miles better than most prem games (at least that i've been to) - so i'm surprised you only mention those two teams.

I'm talking interesting and new chants, clever lyrics etc. Not atmosphere.

Anfield is borderline the quietest ground I've been to as it happens.

Villa are pretty good fun for that.

Not seen Liverpool properly but United fans have been completely and utterly shit when i've seen them, not a chant to be heard, let alone a witty one.

Van Persie is class. Showing the goal from the camera behind the goal where the ball went in - awesome volley.
