Mark Hughes withdrew a reluctant handshake and inflicted a potentially fatal blow to Roberto Mancini’s hopes of a top four finish as Fulham held City at Eastlands. If the visitors’ stubborn display, with attacking menaces surprised nobody – City’s inability to blow down defences, even with three £20 million strikers on the pitch, continues to baffle.

Carlos Tevez earned an assist – paltry returns from what would have been billed as a potentially profitable afternoon for his owners. Investors in King Kenny’s revival came off even worse – a tepid showing at Upton Park saw Liverpool rolled over with apparent ease. Scott Parker again led the way for West Ham, despite being patched up for a shoulder injury hours before kick-off.

With the Carling Cup Final covered off in Sunday’s Knee Jerk and it’s Robin Van Persie follow-up, here’s the notes on yesterday’s Premier League encounters.

Roberto Mancini was without two key players in Vincent Kompany and David Silva. The latter’s omission came as a surprise to Fantasy Managers, with the Spaniard featuring as a Watchlist candidate earlier the week. Silva missed yesterday’s game with an ankle knock sustained in Thursday’s Europa League tie with Aris Salonika. He was subbed with 10 minutes remaining of that game but, at the time, there was no mention of an injury. Mancini stated after the Fulham result that he hoped to have both Kompany and Silva back for their FA Cup fifth round tie with Villa on Wednesday.

“David injured his ankle against Aris and Vincent hadn’t recovered from his hip injury, but I hope one or both will be back for Wednesday.”

Those two casualties added to Mancini’s list that already contained Adam Johnson, Micah Richards and Nigel De Jong, as even City’s resources become stretched – much to the frustration of the City boss…

“If I could freshen up the side by resting three or four players, I would, but because we have so many injuries, it’s impossible.”

Mancini again went with three strikers against Fulham, with Carlos Tevez partnered by Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli in attack. The latter opened the scoring with a fine strike from distance – his ninth goal in City colours. The Italian international came under a barrage of criticism from his manager however, having frustrated the home fans with several wasted efforts and failing to display the movement and workrate expected of him.

“No, I am not happy with him…He scored a good goal but I am not happy. He should play well, better than today…For strikers it is important to score. But strikers should also play for the team. You cannot always play well. But the attitude is always important. If you don’t have a good attitude, it is difficult to play with three strikers.”

Balotelli’s place against Villa is far from assured then and a shift back to 4-4-2 for forthcoming matches seems likely. Yesterday’s 4-3-3 saw Pablo Zabaleta in a holding midfield role, with Aleksandar Kolarov shifted to left-back. The Serb again showed attacking intent throughout but was also a frustration having fired in a first-half shot from an impossible angle when team-mates were better positioned. Kolarov was also run ragged by a lively Damien Duff and was eventually subbed on 77 minutes; he is still far from assured of his starting role for gameweek 29’s home clash with Wigan.

Fulham’s performance was again encouraging. Mark Hughes was forced into one change to his lineup – Dickson Etuhu returned to central midfield for the injured Steve Sidwell. Hughes’ side have lost just one of their last eight league games and have conceded just 5 goals in that spell. Again, they were well organised defensively against City, whilst in attack Duff in particular enjoyed a fine game – terrorising Kolarov and converting Andy Johnson’s cross for the equaliser.

The Cottagers have strong fixtures to come and certainly present an option for the Fantasy Manager seeking a differential. It’s Blackburn at home next, with an Everton trip followed by another winnable home encounter with Blackpool. The likes of Duff, Moussa Dembele and Clint Dempsey look decent options in attacking terms, while Chris Baird and Brede Hangeland present considerations at the back.

West Ham’s 3-1 victory at Upton Park lifted them from the bottom and inflicted a defeat in 8 matches for Dalglish’s side. Scott Parker was once again the inspiration for the Hammers – he notched a delicate curling strike for his fifth goal of the league campaign and duly earned another 3 Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points. Parker has scored 8 Bonus in his last 4 matches.

Demba Ba continued to show superb form – planting a fine header into the corner of Pepe Reina’s net from a Gary O’Neil centre for West Ham’s second. Ba has struck 3 goals in 2 league starts and earned FPL Bonus in both those games.

While we’ve picked out the Hammers in “Frisking the Fixtures” in recent weeks, the potential of West Ham’s players is somewhat tempered by a run of fixtures that now stiffens considerably. Avram Grant’s side do not have an easy run-in and, in the short term, visits to Spurs and Bolton, with Stoke and United at Upton Park next – looks a testing schedule.

Liverpool’s showing was bitterly disappointing. Steven Gerrard’s return and a second league start for Luis Suarez up front failed to ignite Liverpool as an attacking force, although the Uruguayan did notch a smart assist for Glen Johnson second-half goal.

Defensively, Liverpool also looked strangely frail, despite Dalglish deploying a 5-3-2 system with young Danny Wilson holding his starting role as one of three centre –backs. Martin Kelly’s hamstring injury which saw him replaced just before half-time could cut off the obvious route to Liverpool’s defensive returns for the coming weeks and, looking at their schedule of games (MUN sun wba MCY ars), his colleagues at the back are in for some severe tests. The prospect for Liverpool clean sheets looks bleak.

Raul Meireles also suffered an injury was replaced just after half-time. He has been the shining light within the Liverpool squad in terms of attacking points, but his earning potential must also be questioned in the light of the injury and Liverpool’s forthcoming opponents.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Got to admit, I'm almost tempted to. Would save me a transfer although at the moment, to save me doubling up on either defence I'm tempted to try Saha, Beckford or Zigic as a straight swap for Odem.

I think your team looks good, I don't particularly like: Ivanovic (rotation/form), Evra (Vidic woth the extra) and Silva (possible rotation even when not injured) - but they're all perfectly plausible options. I'd be looking to shift Odemwingie but how urgent that is depends on Barton and Van Persie injuries.

(This got lost in the 'Martins Goal' excitement yesterday.)

    just a thought…

Since Nani came back from injury in January, he’s only picked up 4 bonus points in the 8 games since, despite picking up 4 goals and 4 assista in those 8 games, and in my opinion has been United’s most consistent player.

He seems to have fallen out of favour with the BP judges, his consistency has meant he’s expected to score or assist, and doesnt get bonus points even when he does.

He should have had at least 2 bonus against City and deserved 1 yesterday.

Not saying he’s not a nailed non player in my team for the rest of the season but worth noting for future captains choice considerations. His bonus point magnet seems to have been turned off

No the reason why he's doesn't score bp's is because he has to shoot 10 times to get one on target, and he is a selfish player, many united mates have been very critical for his selfish play, the times he isn't selfish he makes very good chances for his team...

disagree. Ronaldo was the most selfish player ever, but collected BP every week.

Its down to the mystery that is BP judges, and the strange decisions they make.

Rooney should not have not gotten 2 yesterday. He should have been sent off, got a tap in from Berbatov, and generally didnt play well.

Nani played better than him yesterday and got zero.

quite annoyed that my rival has gained almost 20 points on me this week. taking my lead down to just over 100

With Rafael not playing, Adam suspended, RVP and Barton crocked and berbatov out of favour

    iam down to
    FOSTER (Bergovic)
    COLEMAN Simpson Huth (Rafael, Kelly)
    Nani Fab Brunt Barton (Adam)
    Tevez Berbatov (RVP)

What should i do this week?
    I originally planned
    Brunt -> Arteta/Cahill
I am thinking point hit for Rafael -> Kolarov/Djorou.

    Opinions pls

Like you, I'm not in a position to entertain any tactical transfers - fielding enough players to get a decent score is the priority at the moment so wouldn't contemplate getting rid of fit players, even if one of them is a complete Brunt. And that includes keeping Rafael - he may be out of favour but at least he's got a chance of playing. Probably Kelly to Djourou is your best option.

I actually think i'll hold onto him. I have Kelly and hes more long term crocked, so I will definetly be getting rid of him and probably get in Coleman.

I'll decide during the week if its worth taking a hit for me to get rid of Van Persie.

If I do I would look at one of the cheap options, probably Zigic and I know people will disagree with this but I reckon Anelka is worth consideration. There will be goals in that game and he is bang on form.

I agree, BP cant keep a CS on the best of days and depending on how the Chel/ManU game pans out I think I would like to get a Chelsea player in for their run in asap.

Probably not now. I have my doubts that Fabs is worth his price but with Walcott out I'm tempted to persevere for a while longer. I'll wait and see what Wenger says about RVP - if he says something like "3 weeks" then you know it'll be more than that and I'll probably ship him. My plan was to play 5 in midfield for the next few and bench Odemthingie, so if RVP will be back fairly soon I'll just ship Odemwingie now and bench RVP.

I was away so have only just had a chance to see it - the FA have to cut that kind of challenge out so, in my opinion, they need to make an example of this incident (and this is from a Rooney owner with a couple of players already suspended). Fair play to McCarthy, though, for not going down like a sack of spuds.

I hear Man Utd will appeal if he gets a ban - so he'll get a stay of execution. Should complete the double but may miss the next 3-4 matches (the FA could tack on an extra game for a 'frivolous' appeal). Or they may spare Clattenburg's blushes and let him off.

Anyone thinking of Hernandez at all? After seeing his display and hearing his Utd stats (8 Starts, 9 goals from 13 shots) I believe he needs to start games and can be a difference maker. Possibly Berba Hernandez front two especially if Rooney is given a ban?

*13 shots ON TARGET, some 27 (or around there) shots in total.

After successfully praying at the alter of lady luck this week (RVP and Fabs out for Rooney and A Young no hit, 29 pts and counting) I'm donning my luck robes and about to enter her temple again for the coming week. As my comment above I'm considering dumping my version of your Perch (Evatt) for R Johnson.

Cahill and Arteta don't convince me and can't see the logic in dumping VDv if he's fit. He has a dgwk soon and is spurs best player. Cahill and Arteta aren't even Everton's best players at the moment.

To me it looked like an instinctive reaction to McCarthy deliberately coming across to block him. Without the elbow, people would have been moaning that it was an off-the-ball foul by McCarthy. I've got a funny feeling that many people here would have raised their arm like Rooney did in a similar situation in the heat of a Prem game.

It's not like he went over to McCarthy a threw an elbow, like Le Saux did to Fowler. What did Le Saux get? A miserly 1 match ban.

Damn my trigger fingers! He's at home to West Brom anywho so it's not a big loss. Do have to laugh at myself though, I'm usually so switched on with these things!

He got injured in the warm-up. Annoying for me too as I brought him and Silva in for a hit. D'oh!
