Roy Hodgson “supersized” his team to counter the Potteries air raid but saw his lofty selection undone by a Rory Delap header. The diminutive Carlos Vela demonstrated his “big” talent to come to Hodgson’s rescue, as the Baggies earned a point and were only denied all three by a miraculous late display by Asmir Begovic between the sticks. Here is the run-down on last night’s action from the Britannia…

With a record of only one away victory in his last 28 Premier League away days (thanks to my new ‘friend’ OptaJoe for that one), Roy Hodgson opted to shuffle his lineup to clear the way for some additional six footers, calling up all the giants in his armoury to combat Stoke’s aerial threat in an attempt to turnaround West Brom’s woeful dip in form. Steven Reid was recalled in place of the diminutive Gonzalo Jara at right-back, Joseph Mulumbu shored up the midfield, with Peter Odemwingie dropping to the bench. The forgotten Abdoulaye Meite was plucked from obscurity to replace Gabriel Tamas in defence, while Bo Myhill (is he short?) was benched for club captain Scott Carson in goal.

Stoke only made a single change from the side that lost at the Emirates last time out as Kenwyne Jones earned a recall to the starting lineup in place of Glenn Whelan – Jon Walters pushed back into midfield to accommodate the return of Jones. Matt Etherington was only fit enough for a place on the bench after being touch and go all week with back and hamstring problems persisting.

It was perhaps unsurprising, given the team selections, that a set-piece provided Stoke’s opener. Rory Delap, often the provider with his gargantuan throws, applied the header on the end of a Jermaine Pennant corner early in the second-half.

A fairly drab affair by all accounts sparked into life in the final minutes as late Baggies sub Carlos Vela transformed the visitors, combining with their two best players on the night – Graham Dorrans and Steven Reid. It was the latter in the 83rd minute who turned provider, crossing for the Arsenal loanee to level matters, quite possibly from an offside position. Vela got his second goal as a West Brom sub (his last 4 league goals have come from the bench), while Reid pick up an assist as well as full 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for his efforts.

Asmir Begovic was a revelation in goal, saving Stoke from complete collapse late on. The Bosnian kept Pulis’ men on level terms as Stoke surrendered control to the visitors. The heroic saves in the dying minutes tallied up to not only reward him with 3 points for his 9 saves, but also caught the eye of the Bonus judge – Begovic ended the evening with a total of 7 points; a stark contrast to the paltry returns earned from the Stoke back four.

Stoke have failed to keep a clean sheet in the league in their last six matches – their last shut-out coming against Bolton back in gameweek 23. Things aren’t much better at the other end of the field; Delap’s goal was Stoke’s first strike in three matches – epitomising their current struggle.

Chris Brunt somewhat surprisingly picked up the final bonus point as well as his ninth yellow card of the season which sees him teeter precariously close to a two-match ban. Robert Huth was also in the book once again – his seventh card of the season.

Jermaine Pennant was withdrawn ten minutes from time with what appeared to be a hamstring injury – keep your eyes peeled on the Scout Tweets and Injuries and Bans for news on his availability ahead of the weekend.

yeh getting rid of odemwingie this week, either for zigic or beckford, cant decide who though?
I fear a brimingham hangover but I also fear a benched beckford, if saha and cahill are fully fit.

Can we rely on Saha? he use to be very silent after few games, after a huge score..

Beckford is roto risk... thinking of getting Tevez.

its always better to go with established players,

Going to sell Berbatov for either Zigic or Saha. everton have the better double and better fixtures but... after Beckford scored 2 goals in the last game is he going to be benched for Saha? Will Cahill, Beckford and Saha start? I'm not sure if Saha would start both games! What does everyone think?

That's exactely my plan. If you want to play safe, I would go Zigic. He will get you 180min.
With Saha you'll never know if he gets injured and Beckford didn't get much playing time lately. The two goals in the last game will help him get some more minutes, but I don't think he's nailed on to start both.

I thought Roy's tactics last night were pretty sound. He may do the same with West Brom that he did with Fulham.I expect the fans will all want it doing the day before yesterday and the owners want it doing for tuppence.
Taking on a team with such a dreadful defensive record and attacking confidence lost, takes a great deal of self belief.
I wish him and W.B.A luck but fear it may need another promotion battle next year.

Although I wouldn't have taken him out anyway (too many other transfers to do) I still don't fully understand the stampede to drop odemwingie. He looked dangerous when he came on and Woy wil surely have learnt his lesson. Admittedly his fixtures are fairly poor, but I reckon he could score decently at home against arsenal/chelsea......

TBH I was planning on playing 5 in midfield and benching Odem anyway - but it's the RVP injury that makes me more keen to ship Odem for someone more likely to score well. I think this is likely where some of the momentum is coming from.

My team is losing value and there seems little hope I'll be able to afford Tevez this week for Berbs, given I'm now 0.2 short. Do I

    A. Bring in Torres instead
    B. Take out RVP for Tevez regardless of any injury concern
    C. Take out RVP for Berbs
    D. Wait for outcome of Everton v Reading and bring in Zigic for Berbs
    E. As above but Beckford for Berbs

Atm D looks the best option.

u should have taken out RVP last week to avoid the price drop, and Tevez's price rise. All about timing mate! 🙂

But to worry, I reckon Torres is a good one to get in for the B'Pool game.
And in my opinion, Zigic is a safer bet than beckford.

My first transfer is very likely to be Berba>Zigic.
Do you think one of the following is worth a hit?

A.Rafael>Baines (double up on EVE defense)
B.Barton/Silva (depends on injury news) > Cahill
    C.no hit

    Cheers.

good move for you. My problem is that Berba and even more Rafael are unlikely to start and that it likely that at least two out of Silva, Barton and RVP are out which means a hit is on the cards...

Leave it out. ALL the top clubs (and England's media darlings in particular) get away with more than what they should.

Yes, Rooney should've been banned. But Stevie G got away with an elbow earlier in the season, JT seems to be the only one who can get a red overturned, blah blah blah.

ALL the big clubs get more than their fair share of decisions in reality. Not how it should be, but it is.

I think Odemwingie has to be shipped now – Hodgson put him on the bench last night and The Albion ended up with a decent result so can’t see that changing for the next away game.

Providing the Everton Reading game isn’t a draw tonight, I was thinking, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, for a Birmingham striker. Zigic is the same price and seems to be starting games now, though I am wary the Big Eck has Obafemi and Jerome at his disposal to rotate with too. I don’t have any faith in Jerome whatsoever so he is a no go. How much is Obafemi? Don’t have access to the FPL at present. But Zigic has to be the shout surely, even if it is for hit. They have two doubles and alright fixtures in between. Anyone else considering one of these as the third striker option, even though they are by no means regular scorers?

Obafemi and Zigic are both 5.3. Out of the two, it has to be Zigic, who isn't a bad punt at all. Birmingham have good home fixtures for the reminder of the season (i.e. the games that you'll play him) and have another double pretty soon in week 33.

All depends on RVP's fitness for me, if he's only going to miss one game I don't mind sitting on Wingie for a few more weeks and just playing 4-5-1 next week. I agree that long term he looks pretty cr*ppy though.

Problem for me is I'm not feeling Zigic or Martins or Sturridge or Saha or ANY of the obvious replacements.

That is very true Mr Priest, you wouldn’t play him every week but barring injury he should be pretty safe to figure in all of the games. They can’t prioritise the FA Cup run as they are still fighting it out at the bottom of the league. Martins may be good for a brace one week but wouldn’t like to be waiting for points from him – He won’t be playing Szczesny and Koscielny every week after all.. 🙂

You must be chuffed with your score following the big hit – I went the opposite way (very boring and conservative I know) and took no hits and played with 10. Until it turned out to be 9, thanks Joey. I thought it may play into my hands a little with so many taking hits. It would be looking a helluva lot better if Rooney got -2 that is for sure.

I know. That was from The Mirror though wasn’t it, or has it been confirmed?

That means he is definitely out for the Sunderland game too. There is a bit of a gap to the West Brom game though, so I was thinking of keeping him anyway. This week there is no outstanding striker prospect if you have Tevez already.

Wow. Injury and squad rotation/benchings are taking their toll on my team. Had a pretty sorted squad a few weeks ago, now I can barely field a team!

    Foster - Al Habsi
    Kolarov - Huth - Coleman - Rafael - Djourou
Nani - Van der Vaart - Meireles - Downing - Barton
Tevez - Berbatov - Van Persie

I've got doubts about: Rafael, Meireles, Berbatov, Van Persie.

Who's the priority - who should I shift first? And for who?
