Roy Hodgson “supersized” his team to counter the Potteries air raid but saw his lofty selection undone by a Rory Delap header. The diminutive Carlos Vela demonstrated his “big” talent to come to Hodgson’s rescue, as the Baggies earned a point and were only denied all three by a miraculous late display by Asmir Begovic between the sticks. Here is the run-down on last night’s action from the Britannia…

With a record of only one away victory in his last 28 Premier League away days (thanks to my new ‘friend’ OptaJoe for that one), Roy Hodgson opted to shuffle his lineup to clear the way for some additional six footers, calling up all the giants in his armoury to combat Stoke’s aerial threat in an attempt to turnaround West Brom’s woeful dip in form. Steven Reid was recalled in place of the diminutive Gonzalo Jara at right-back, Joseph Mulumbu shored up the midfield, with Peter Odemwingie dropping to the bench. The forgotten Abdoulaye Meite was plucked from obscurity to replace Gabriel Tamas in defence, while Bo Myhill (is he short?) was benched for club captain Scott Carson in goal.

Stoke only made a single change from the side that lost at the Emirates last time out as Kenwyne Jones earned a recall to the starting lineup in place of Glenn Whelan – Jon Walters pushed back into midfield to accommodate the return of Jones. Matt Etherington was only fit enough for a place on the bench after being touch and go all week with back and hamstring problems persisting.

It was perhaps unsurprising, given the team selections, that a set-piece provided Stoke’s opener. Rory Delap, often the provider with his gargantuan throws, applied the header on the end of a Jermaine Pennant corner early in the second-half.

A fairly drab affair by all accounts sparked into life in the final minutes as late Baggies sub Carlos Vela transformed the visitors, combining with their two best players on the night – Graham Dorrans and Steven Reid. It was the latter in the 83rd minute who turned provider, crossing for the Arsenal loanee to level matters, quite possibly from an offside position. Vela got his second goal as a West Brom sub (his last 4 league goals have come from the bench), while Reid pick up an assist as well as full 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for his efforts.

Asmir Begovic was a revelation in goal, saving Stoke from complete collapse late on. The Bosnian kept Pulis’ men on level terms as Stoke surrendered control to the visitors. The heroic saves in the dying minutes tallied up to not only reward him with 3 points for his 9 saves, but also caught the eye of the Bonus judge – Begovic ended the evening with a total of 7 points; a stark contrast to the paltry returns earned from the Stoke back four.

Stoke have failed to keep a clean sheet in the league in their last six matches – their last shut-out coming against Bolton back in gameweek 23. Things aren’t much better at the other end of the field; Delap’s goal was Stoke’s first strike in three matches – epitomising their current struggle.

Chris Brunt somewhat surprisingly picked up the final bonus point as well as his ninth yellow card of the season which sees him teeter precariously close to a two-match ban. Robert Huth was also in the book once again – his seventh card of the season.

Jermaine Pennant was withdrawn ten minutes from time with what appeared to be a hamstring injury – keep your eyes peeled on the Scout Tweets and Injuries and Bans for news on his availability ahead of the weekend.

My prediction for "the big fight" tonight:

They combatants stand ready, separated only by 20 yards of turf; Wayne “Elbow Hammer” Rooney and Ashley “BB” Cole. The noise of the crowd envelopes the stadium, growing steadily to a crescendo. The warriors are unmoved, totally focused on their opponent. They’ve trained long and hard for this night, and finally it has arrived.

“What is that ting?” Cole asks his trainer.

“Is-a no worries,“ Anceloti replies “only one man waxes his balls on this pitch, and is-a not him!”

Cole nods, mollified that he is facing nothing more than an animal.

“Wayne kill?” Rooney asks his trainer.

“Yes, that’s right. Wayne kill.” Sir Alex replies.

The referee waves the trainers away and raises his whistle to his lips, the crowd falling silent in anticipation. A slight pause, before a single shrill blast echoes across the pitch, spurring the players into action.

Rooney grunts and begins to lumber forward. Cole immediately drops to one knee, scooping up his trusty .22 air rifle, know to all in the Chelsea dressing room as “The Impregnator”. As Rooney sprints forward he works the gun, sliding the well lubricated mechanism back with practised ease. He slips a pellet inside, his now oily fingers gliding along the shaft of the barrel.

Rooney is still accelerating as Cole triumphantly stands, but the distance is too great, and its almost too easy for the Londoner a he raises his weapon, stroking the trigger gently as he prepares to fire.

But what’s this? A bare honey standing in the crowd behind Rooney? Its only a moment’s distraction for Cole but its enough. Rooney bellows triumphantly as he surges forward, his body knocking the gun aside, his elbow pistoning forward to strike Cole just behind the right ear. Ashley crumples to the ground, the depressed fracture of his skull sending shards of bone deep into his brain.

Rooney stumbles to a halt, and raising his airs high into the air, roars in triumph. He turns to the crowd, but as he does so a lighted cigarette butt arcs across the stadium, hitting him square in the eye. He howls in pain, temporarily blinded as the silver arc of a sword blade flashes out. His head flies from his shoulders and blood fountains up, staining his shirt a darker red.

“There can be only one.” murmurs Joey Barton as he begins to quicken.

I've got a similar team, and am not sure what to do with Meireles this week. Arteta's a guy I've got my eye on, but I'm definitely not sold on him. I might look at Nasri, but with Fabs, Walcott and RVP out I don't know what to expect from Arsenal.

I've also got Berbatov, who I want to get rid of, and Zigic is definitely a guy on my radar.

I'll be interested to see what people recommend to you - it might well give me some ideas!

Surely play at the weekend. Wenger said "1 or 2 games" which presumably meant the cup final and orient.

Certainly seems to me he will play to give the team a boost.

It would be a real kick in the teeth if he finally cut loose with a pen or few set pieces and obviously less competition for bps

It would be truly awful if he did do that. I've had him basically all season, when fit, other than the Chelsea game, and for him to score big again just after I've taken him out would be heartbreaking.

Can't see him getting back in my side for the rest of the season though. I'm planning on rotating Rooney/RVP/Tevez/Rooney for my three striker slots, with mid-priced midfielders like Arteta/Cahill/Nasri/Malouda/VDV/Nani and O'Hara + Adam.

Only Lamps penalty or Che win could make me happy. I am mad for my O'hara/ Barton decision, but that is luck what we can do. I also made mistake with my WC picking Berbatov and that forced me to bench Walcot and VDV when they scored points and not having Begovic this GW. All that risk for that silly Bulgarian. He has never scored for me this season and I had him more than 10weeks in my team.

The main problem is that I am loosing ground to this player. I don't like his team, cause is a good one. I was 30 pts upfront before this GW but know bleurgh... http://fantasy.premierleague.com/M/eventhist.mc?id=186301&event=28 He also has cash to do RVP - Torres IMO

Any advice against him. I think with DVD and Cahill I have a chance but will see.

Think a lot will go that way.

I think Lamps and Torres could be good shouts this week, as could Tevez and Nasri.

Nasri too. There isn't one double gameweek player I'd trust with the armband this week, sadly.

Maybe Arteta as you might get lucky and get an Everton pen. Baines could end up with 4 pts total from the 2 games.

Hard to think any of them have the potential to outscore Tevez, Torres or Nasri though.

At least they are looking like putting up a half decent total. I need my horde of Sri Lankan batsmen to actually have the chance to get some runs!

Perfect scenario would be these two batting for a while longer, then Murali taking some wickets at the death as they go for it a bit more.

This week is already a classic example of DGW Fever kicking in again.

Everton: away to Newcastle, which now seems more difficult than it did 2-3 weeks ago, and we all know how shaky Everton's defence has been, so not counting on defensive returns on that one, which leads to attacking points. Newcastle have certainly tightended up under Pardew, not a "he's been raped just then" in sight for his defenders, so I would predict a 1-1 affair, with maybe Everton sneaking the win at 1-2. Which means, Coleman/Baines/Saha/Cahill/Arteta/Beckford all have a shot at some points, fine.

Then, they are at home to Birmingham, not a bad shout for a cleanie here I would of thought, with limited returns in attack I would of thought, a 1-0 affair if I ever saw one, with Brums being tight at the back, and still buoyant (depending on how they go at the weekend against a wounded West Brom side).

So, in conclusion, I see returns for defenders, or players classed as defenders, enter Baines and Coleman. Where Cahill is an injury doubt, and Arteta has just returned an assist, I think peoole are coming down with a bad case of the DGW Fever, if Cahill wasn't injured, and Everton didn't have two fixtures, would you ever consider Arteta? No, so, if you are choosing him on fixtures alone, are the fixtures good enough to choose him over a Chelsea midfielder, a Villa midfielder? I just don't think so.

Cahill on the other hand may only play 1 of the DGW games, and if it is at home to Birmingham, I don't see that being high scoring, so I would prefer Young or Downing or Lampard if funds allow (and they should with Fabregas most likely out), all have good fixtures and Young and Downing in particular have form.

Saha and Beckford, Saha is just too much of a risk, and Beckford, not sure he will have those returns with Tim Cahill playing 90 minutes, but will he play 90? which leads me back to my original point, nothing is certain or guaranteed or worth the risk in my opinion, and Baines and Coleman are the way to go for Everton coverage this week.

Good post JU and I agree with the predicted scores and the probability that Everton players will not produce huge returns if their potential dgw goes ahead. But for me the failsafe of bringing someone like Baines, Cahill, Arteta or Saha in now is the fixtures they have after the double - two home fixtures against FUL and AVL. Barring injury of course, you would be happy enough to hold onto your Everton player for those fixtures with reasonable expectations of a nice return. So in this case the dgw isn't a case of a one-week 'all or nothing' gamble.

      Good post Johnny.
Everton did look more like their old self at weekend and Arteta in particular. Ashley Young is performing really well in his more advanced roll and Nasri at home to Sunderland also tempting.
Lampards would be straight in if I had the choice but need to make an additional change which i don't want to do although I reckon he could score really big against Blackpool....

Everything I saw is tinged with sarcasm - prob doesn't work well on a forum though.., in fact doesn't work great in real life but hey.

I like the concept and you have all the right topics and sections. I guess it could become a good place of reference to go to look at some of the better/more considered posts.

I like the pro-activeness of you doing something about it instead of whining about cricket or RMTs or whatever.

The thing is where do I log on first, here or there? and if here, why would i go there?

The ideal solution is maybe this site adopt your format, but Mark must have considered that and concluded this format, while not perfect, works best?

                Hi Back on the horse,

Can i just say thank you for having a look over the site.

The sarcasm within the site, is probably my personality shining through.

The comment about the concept of a reference point for good/longer post is the whole idea of the site, how many times do good posts, as such go to waste as they are lost on prev pages from a week ago.

I just want people to understand im not trying to discredit this site, as you can see i have numerous references to fantasy football scout on the site and i want it to be used as a supplement to this site for longer, bigger more in depth articles.

I want the site to link through to all other useful fantasy football sites so it can be like a first port of call, as all other sites can be accessed via the site.

I agree ffs does work best for most people, but also the forum format works for people too, i know it does for me.

Any one else have anything constructive for me, please bare in mind it is in the very early stage of development.

                Thank you in advance

Also, my two cents for tonight, Chelsea win, 2-1, Torres and Drogba, with a Rooney goal at some point, just see it as perfectly set up for Chelsea to make their mark on the title race, they can't win in my view, but they can certainly hinder United from doing so, and from Chelsea's point of view, what could be better when they can't win outright?

Torres to score and be the most sought after player for the weekend!

I'd presonally do torres for odem as it looks like he might have lost his place. Vela will start next game. At least with brunt you know he's guaranteed starter and can take him out next week after he'll be inevitably suspended for picking up his 10th booking
