Dirk Kuyt grabs the goals but Luis Suarez is the star of the show as Liverpool hand Man United their third defeat in five league games to keep the title race wide open. Jamie Carragher’s x-rated challenge on Nani sees many a Fantasy Manager await United’s verdict on the severity of their winger’s injury. Meanwhile at Molineux, Jermaine Defoe finally scores as Wolves and Spurs share the spoils in a six-goal thriller that paid fitting tribute to the late Dean Richards. Here’s the Scout Notes from yesterday’s extraordinary games.

Kenny Dalglish opted for a 4-4-2 formation for the Anfield clash, mirroring that of Man United, and it was a decision that paid off handsomely. With a hamstring injury keeping Martin Kelly sidelined, Glen Johnson started at right-back, giving Fabio Aurelio a chance at left-back. Aurelio lasted only 24 minutes before leaving the proceedings injured and Johnson moved back to the left-back berth in which he has impressed so much at late. Jamie Carragher shifted to right-back, a switch which was to have severe repercussions for United.

Steven Gerrard recovered from injury to take his place in the midfield engine room, as Luis Suarez was joined up front by Dirk Kuyt. The Dutchman enjoyed a trio of tap-ins (and subsequently picked up the maximum 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points) for the most straightforward of hat-tricks against Liverpool’s bitter rivals, but it was Suarez who impressed throughout, with a display of sublime skill that saw him pick up two assists and 2 Bonus Points. The hat-trick was the first of Kuyt’s Liverpool career and he paid tribute to Suarez, admitting the goals were “a bit special“.

It seems unlikely that Kuyt will continue up front much longer, however, as the game also saw Andy Carroll’s first appearance in a Liverpool jersey following his January move. Suarez admitted before the game that, although he’s only trained with the big target man on a handful of occasions, their on-pitch partnership already feels likeone to savour.

Investment in Suarez and his Liverpool team-mates could well be tempered by a fixture list that show three away trips in the next four, with a tricky Anfield clash with City thrown in. Liverpool have hardly been free-scoring away from home so things will need to improve if Suarez and Carroll are to offer potential as Fantasy investments.

Nemanja Vidic’s red card at Stamford Bridge last gameweek meant Sir Alex Ferguson travelled to Anfield without his first-choice centre half pairing, with Rio Ferdinand still sidelined. Wes Brown partnered Chris Smalling in the heart of the Red Devils’ back-four but failed to deal with a rampant performance from the home side. Rafael also earned a recall at right-back, with John O’Shea dropping to the bench. Dimitar Berbatov earned his first start in four league games but it was Javier Hernandez-dropped at the Bulgarian’s expense- who grabbed a meaningless consolation at the death.

Illness prevented Darren Fletcher from starting and United missed the Scotsman’s grit in the centre of the pitch, but of more concern to Ferguson will be the injury that forced Nani to leave the proceedings, following a poorly timed challenge by Jamie Carragher. As mentioned in an article by johnfinlay last night, the winger is expected to be examined at the club’s training ground today and hopefully they will shed some light on the situation. With a media blackout before and after yesterday’s game, it was only the twitter feed of Rio Ferdinand that offered any opinion on the result.

Wolves are continuing to show a real fighting spirit in their battle to stave off relegation; their 3-3 draw at home to Spurs leaves Wigan two points adrift at the bottom of the table and with just one defeat in their last five games, Mick McCarthy’s side have every chance of beating the drop. Big Mick was relatively happy with the result, describing it post-match as a “valuable point“

They had to do it without the services of Jamie O’Hara, who was unable to play against his parent club. Nenad Milijas started in centre midfield instead and helped himself to two assists and 1 Bonus Point. He now has four assists in his last four games. Matt Jarvis, so impressive of late, grabbed the other assist but it was Kevin Doyle who shone for the home side, with a brace and 2 Bonus Points; that’s 24 FPL points in his last 3 home games for the forward.

With a crucial Champions League tie against AC Milan on the horizon, Harry Redknapp juggled his squad for Spurs’ trip to Molineux. Luka Modric played left wing, Sandro and Jermaine Jenas started in centre midfield and Alan Hutton returned at right-back, as William Gallas shifting to the heart of the back-four.

Having played thirteen league games this season without finding the net, Jermain Defoe finally broke his duck, scoring twice and picking up 3 Bonus Points. Spurs have an enticing run of league games up next (WHM, wig, STK, mcy & ARS, WBA) and there will no doubt be investment in their squad, but Defoe’s highly erratic performances will surely deter most investors. Roman Pavlyuchenko scored his second goal in two games and also grabbed an assist, but Spurs just cannot tighten up at the back, conceding 3 goals against a team near the bottom for the second game in a row.

Good news for Harry Redknapp was the return of Gareth Bale to the first-team; the Welshman came off the subs bench with just over 20 minutes left and after the match Redknapp confirmed he is confident that both Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart will start the game against Milan at White Hart Lane this upcoming week. Both will be on the minds of Fantasy Managers once the Milan tie has passed.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Chelsea aren't out of the title race after this weekend. Assuming they win both games in hand and win at OT, it's all on again, especially as Arsenal are sure to choke.

I should say *if*, rather than assuming. I don't expect them to win at OT, although it wouldn't be all that surprising.

Based on fixtures, Chelsea have a good chance to be 3rd imo. If RVP and Fab are fit for the remainder of the season, it's going to be Arsenal, ManU, Chelsea.

It's possible that this is an argument about the interpretation of the word possible, but I think there is no way in hell any tea, in the league, including Chelsea, will win every remaining game. Hasn't been that sort of season.

Anyone getting a little worried about Mankini's more defensive approach at the weekend (I watched in a bar, not sure if it really was a defensive approach?), and Tevez' returns? I had planned to ship anyway but he looks to be playing that bit deeper, or maybe there are just more attacking players getting in on the action, but where YaYa Toure and Silva are getting goals and assists you have to wonder why Tevez isn't getting in on that action.

He is gone for RVP for me soon.

I just noticed that United really have a clusterf*ck of a schedule this year, just played Chelsea and Liverpool, both on the road, within 5 days of each other, and have to do the same thing in May with Arsenal away and Chelsea at home in the same period.

We don't have the team to win the league this year, would be amazed and delighted if we do it, not winning will at least Fergie to look long and hard at the squad before offering new contracts to the likes of Carrick.

Tevez as a lone man gets all the attention of defences, opening up gaps for Silva and Yaya.

I realised why Kolarov hasn't got the massive returns we all hoped for: There is noone there to get on them crosses.

Citeh have scored 2 headers all season (worst in league)

Making the decision to get rid of Tevez that bit easier at least, don't see huge hauls from him from now until the end of the season, and am willing to take the gamble that he won't. That being said, next GW at Chelsea I would fancy him to come out of those kindof games with at least an assist.

It's a common thing with Dutch and Scandy players who go to Liverpool. Jan Molby is a good example.

There are two reasons. One is they already speak better English than most English people, and the other is that the Scouse accent pervades the city like in no other. Pretty much everyone from Liverpool has a Scouse accent.

It's not true of many other big cities. Most of Birmingham's middle classes don't sound Brummie for instance.

Either rested or tactical. He came on playing to the left of Tevez eventually when it becase clear they were producing very litte. Seems to me their best line up up top is Kolarov - Tevez - Silva, but Mancini's kinda gotta play Balotelli and Dzeko a bit or he looks like a complete tool for buying them for the prices he did - I think this in essence is their problem now.

I had a great day on Sunday: Pancakes for breakfast, a few hours playing Mario World, then Sushi and drinks for my friends birthday, and ended up at a small but nice hip hop night where I bumped into an old friend.

Then I went home, cooked Donna an omelette, and watched Strictly Ballroom.

Ike cut the first rock and roll record, yet all anyone remembers about him is his wife-beating.

William Burroughs shoots his wife dead, Norman Mailer stabs his and they're remembered as great writers.

          That's racism for you folks.

You make a fair point, Soop. The film and Tina's fame are factors in his rep too.

I was involved in producing a brief obit for both Ike and Mailer, and it struck me as unfair that Ike's basically began: "Well known wife-beater Ike Turner..." when Mailer's stabbing of his wife never got a mention.

              I had to wonder why.

BTW, you're right about the origins of rock 'n roll. Some people reckon a record Turner did in the early 50s was the first true RnR record. Others would disagree.

the experience completely consumed me and moved me... there were people coming out of the other end in tears and shaking... it was incredible... like a haunted house but far more moving and not as corny

it made you completely question the world around you and devastated the very fabric of your beliefs

it's a shame it was only on for a fortnight as more people should have seen it

Of course in order to get commisioned these days, it would have to be re-filmed infront of a Patagonian glacier from a variety of quirky camera angles in case someone got bored and switched over to X-factor.

the papers were linking him with liverpool and everton on sunday so gota make the most of backing him while hes still here!

What's youjr opinion on Berbatov starting against Bolton?

It seems that I have more pressing transfers to make this GW and don't want to take a hit, but Hernandez scoring in injury time hasn't strengthened my faith in Berba.

I see a lot of people have Tevez + Rooney, but who are you getting rid of to get RVP?

Personally, a forward line of Rooney (or Torres), RVP, Welbeck/Gyan/Carroll will do me for the rest of the season.

    Goodbye Orc.

Why do you bother atm? I understand that forward planning is important, but according to Wenger RVP is out for at least 4 weeks, which means in reality - given his past - at least 6-8 weeks. I wouldn't go near him until he gets through one game unscattered.

Do you really prefer Manu's fixtures from GW33-36?

              Manu (new,EVE,ars,CHE)
              Manc (TOT,bla,WHA,eve)

I'm not saying that Tevez is definitely outscoring Rooney, but Manc's fixtures seem to be a bit easier...

That means you won't have Rooney and Tevez. Funny question in first place then...

I agree that Rooney is important, but I'm not sure if I should do Berba>Rooney. If Nani is out Berba should start against Bolton and Rooney should play left wing. That would reduce his scoring potential.

I never said I'd have Rooney and Tevez? 😆 I was just wondering who people prefered by seeing who would leave for RVP.

Berbatov is another option, going by nothing other than the potential to explode. It's an annoying decision.

I wouldn't do Berba --> Rooney, bit of a sideways move. (Unless there's indications he won't start)

Currently on a poor 23 points with Foster, Zigic, Arteta and Coleman still to play. No idea if Zigic/Coleman will even feature in the next game, that would be a dissapointment but something that happens. Surely have to consider replacing Gordon with Begovic?

His protection started when the flag was removed (27th, Carling cup day) I think? If we assume that protection lasts 2 weeks max then his protection would end soon if not already. So, he's now -440% and his price would drop somewhere around -540%.

And if he plays again before the drop then his flag will be removed and he would be protected again.

            Does that make any sense?
