Continuing our new series – this week’s “Masterplan” considers the midfield – without doubt the key area for all Fantasy Managers in a season which has seen the 3-5-2 established as the dominant formation.

The Problem

We’ve an embarrassment of riches in midfield areas. With Nani remaining almost essential and with double gameweek’s looming for the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, how do we best configure our midfield selection to maximise returns?

Plan A

The safe option, packed with confirmed big-hitters boasting set-piece dominance.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal have to be a priority given that they face double fixtures in gameweek 33. Both have decent attacking form and offer options with the potential to “explode” with double figure returns. Frank Lampard looks by far the best option in Carlo Ancelotti’s midfield which reduces funds for the other four slots. Samir Nasri perhaps presents the best pick in the Arsenal engine room right now, although he could be vulnerable to rotation with Arsene Wenger also presented with plethora of options. Cesc Fabregas, given the selection of Lampard looks an expensive choice; as for Andrey Arshavin – can we really trust him to hold his form? Debatable and a risk as a result.

Nani is a given – it’s just too much of a gamble to overlook him. That leaves two spots with Rafael Van der Vaart, Ashley Young, Charlie Adam and Tim Cahill all offer strong appeal in the mid-price. Budget options meanwhile include the in-form Jamie O’Hara, Villa’s Marc Albrighton and the double gameweek appeal of Birmingham’s Craig Gardner.

For me, Van der Vaart is just too influential to overlook – there’s a risk that he’ll be rested but setbacks for Gareth Bale and Aaaron Lennon looks to have secured his starts for decent short-term fixtures, even with the Champions League tie with Real Madrid beckoning.

That leaves one spot – and, budget permitting, Ashley Young and his set-pieces just about edges over Tim Cahill, with Charlie Adam lined up for a transfer in for gameweek 33 to catch three consecutive home matches.

Plan B

A lighter option, still reliant on a couple of heavyweights but with two cut price selections and just a hint of a differential.

Go for Nani, Lampard and Nasri to capture the gameweek 33 doubles and then opt for Jamie O’Hara with either Adam or Albrighton taking up the fifth spot. Albrighton might well fair better over his next two gameweeks (eve NEW), with Adam facing a gameweek 34 clash with Arsenal. That’s his first of four home matches however, a factor that will surely see him get the nod for many Fantasy Managers from gameweek 33.

Plan C

Differentials are the objective here with a mini-league gap to close, although the foundations remain sound with two reliable expensive options.

Keep Nani and opt for Lampard to protect against big scores but go for the less popular Arshavin to cover the Arsenal double fixture. Gamble on Tim Cahill’s fitness for his three favourable fixtures (AVL wol BLA) and look to Villa’s Marc Albrighton to cover their kind run. Use the final slot to really hunt that differential – take a risk on the in-form Luka Modric who is pulling in Bonus points and could find goals and assists given Tottenham’s run of forthcoming opponents (wig STK ARS WBA). It’s still important to keep Adam on the watchlist for his run of home games.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This is literally the worst argument ever. The fact that Utd haven't had the most penalties - you've actually had barely any this season - doesn't disprove the idea that you get more incorrect decision in your favour than any other side.

I wish Ferguson would quit with this whole ref whingeing episode. In each of the games, against Chelsea, that he - and Utd's fans - always moans about, Utd have also had significant (and incorrect decisions) go in their favour.

Chelsea 1-0 Utd, 2009: Johnny Evans decides to karate kick Drogba in the chest and avoids a red card.

Utd 1-2 Chelsea, 2010: Macheda's handball? Utd fans, and manager, astonishingly always overlook this.

Chelsea 2-1 Utd, 2011: Utd's "best" player (yes, the inverted commas were necessary) and goal scorer on the night shouldn't have been near a football pitch that night after his disgraceful elbow on McCarthy.

as much as i hate utd, to even up the arguments

utd 1 - 2 chelsea 2010, drogba was offside for his goal

chelsea 2-1 utd 2011, luiz should have been sent off (or whoever it was that hauled down rooney on edge of the box)

        cant think back to 2009....

2009 was when we were given a free kick after Fletcher possibly didn't actually foul Cole.

I agree that each of those decision you mention went in our favour, but that's not the point I'm trying to make. These are the incidents that Fergie is complaining about, whilst he completely ignores the equally significant decisions that went Utd's way in each of those games.

true, i just think refs get a raw deal. they dont make decisions wrong on purpose and if we're all truthful wed all admit there are times when watching a game we think its a foul and a replay confirms its not and vice versa

Quite possibly, it's just irritating when their fans then also jump on the bandwagon and complain about these decisions. Especially when they recycle all the classic Howard Webb jokes with Martin Atkinson and Chelsea instead. 😉

Can't believe people still persist with this nonsense argument that United get all the decisions. It's astonishing that you use the Macheda "handball" as part of your argument, when Drogba was miles offside for a goal in the same game. That season at Stamford Bridge Ivanovic was offside and clearly interfering in Terry's winner. How many poins did you win by last season?

Those penalty stats don't prove a lot, but how you can say United alone still get the decisions is just pathetic. I agree there may be a big club bias from refs, but that includes you.

Akers, I think you've completely misunderstood the point I'm trying to make here.

Firstly, I haven't said here that Utd do in fact get all the decisions, I've merely made the point that Andy's argument is nonsensical.

Secondly, as I think I've explained in my reply to Tosey above, I'm also not disputing the fact that Drogba's goal at Old Trafford shouldn't have stood - or that David Luiz should have been sent off etc. for that matter. I'm just saying that Ferguson has little/no grounds for complaint, considering Macheda's handball. We each scored a goal that shouldn't have stood, how can anyone have cause for complaint after that?!

P.S. Would you say that the number of incorrect decisions that go your way is directly proportional to the size of the club itself (you've implied it here with the 'big clubs' comment). And, as you continually like to remind us, Manchester United are the biggest club in the country. 😛

Maybe that was a bold statement...little to go on apart from my own experiences and the general trend towards midfielders this season...I've rarely gone with 3 strikers and generally found that maintaining 5 dependable strong-scoring midfielders has been neccersary all season.

Having said that, in my defence, there are 10 FPL strikers with 100+ scores, whereas you can find 26 midifielders returning 100 or more. That would suggest a natural bias towards strong 5 man midfields.

Last season there were more strikers on form more often. Right now, you've got the likes of VDV, Young, Cahill who are classified as midfielders, but basically playing up front (and on pens). Wonder if it'll change next season again if Torres, Carroll, Saurez etc get into form.

There's so much options in terms of midfielders right now yet there are slim picking in terms of strikers especially this week.

I read this article is highly in favour of retaining Nani, but I’m seriously considering shipping him myself – Much like yourself tose. I have to try something to gain 49points, so a midfield containing Lampard and Cesc may be one way of trying to achieve this. Time to roll the dice.

Nice post Mark. My front 8 is frustrating. Would really like to get Lampard, Adam and O'Hara in but just can't find the space in all honesty.

VDV, Nasri, Nani & Young I think will all score pretty well over the next few weeks, so can't really get rid. (Barton can be sold for Adam in a few weeks though).

Rooney & RVP have pretty nice short-term fixtures so can't seem to get rid of them either (to fund a Lampard transfer).

I think i have only played online about 20 times. Win more games than lose and rest disconnect before the end of the game. Unfortunately for them FIFA found a solution to deduct points from the players who disconnect when losing

Really regret doing the Nani to Lampard switch on hearing he was supposed to be out for a few weeks and got hammered last GW Is this team good enough this week
Foster, Baines Coleman Baird. Nasri Lamps VDV Young Barton. Rvp Rooney
Or should I get Nani back in?

I think Nani is going to be less essential from here on in. Valencia rotation.

I'm doing the Nani to Lampard next GW unless vP is seriously crocked, in which case I would do vP-> Carroll and Bentley-> Lampard instead. Have a few points to catch up.

Starting Luiz over Huth this weekend and I'm 100% confident with that. Invariably have learned from trial and error with this game to go with your own instinct and not listen to the masses. Just wondering if anyone else was planning the same?

Stick with your instinct. If it turns out to be wrong then so be it. You'd be much angrier if you changed your plans due to others and then it didn't work out.

      We've all done that before.

I have doubled up on Brum a few times and it has backfired plus I fancy Bolton to score. Bolton did them at St Andrews in the cup quarter final too (minus Danny Sturridge). I may go for Huth and his goal scoring potential.. And hope for 'old club syndrome' to strike!

or just go valencia instead of nani

    Hey all

My rival got in front last gameweek so I've had to listen to him gloat for 2 weeks. Looking at doing the following trades:
    Nasri->Lampard
    Tevez->Gyan

Will leave my starting XI this week as this:
    Foster
    Kolarov Coleman Baines Walker
Lampard Cahill Nani Adam (I know he's a doubt)
    Gyan Rooney

Thoughts? Any other trades that need to be done first?
