“Essential” is a big word in Fantasy Football. Invariably, the minute you go throwing it in the direction of player, circumstances twist to render such claims as pure folly. Having lauded Nani an indispensable member of any squad, Alex Ferguson opted to rest the season’s leading Fantasy points scorer in today’s 4-2 win at West Ham. To compound matters, Wayne Rooney emerged from his first-half shell to fire a superb hat-trick. It may just force a rethink.

Nani has, for so long, provided incredibly effective cover for United’s attacking returns. His 9 goals and 16 assists speak for themselves and looked to have locked him into our squads for the duration.

His importance has of course been boosted by an inconsistent Rooney. While Nani has contributed no less than 7 double figure returns in the Fantasy Premier League game, Rooney had mustered 4 in response before today. Five goals in his last 7 league starts had signposted today’s handsome haul, but with Nani firmly planted in our lineups, many Fantasy Managers will have been content to go into the gameweek without Rooney against a West Ham defence that had conceded just a single goal in their last three matches. Today’s events have changed all that.

Suddenly we will be fidgeting on Nani. Today’s decision to bench the Portuguese trickster was surely influenced by Wednesday’s Champions League date with Chelsea, but Antonio Valencia’s assured and effective return to the starting lineup is a worry. Ferguson is a huge fan of the former Wigan winger and his faith in him was rewarded by a showing that provided an assist and more crosses than any other player in the league today.

Park Ji-Sung is another player admired by Ferguson and his return to fitness, along with Ryan Giggs’ evergreen performance, highlights that the United boss now has the resources to shuffle and rest Nani at a whim.

Wayne Rooney’s points haul will inevitably raise his profile at a time when most Fantasy Managers either own or covet Robin Van Persie. With Frank Lampard and an Arsenal midfielder looking strong temptations ahead of gameweek 33 double fixtures, funds for Rooney look scarce.

The inclusion of both Nani and Rooney may also seem like overkill – United had scored 3 goals in 3 league games before today – do they warrant such heavy attacking investment with fixtures falling kindly for Chelsea and Arsenal?

Rooney will have to be considered – tinkering will be done and a route to acquire him will surely be planned by many. Plenty will be pondering the merits of Nani as a result. Unthinkable before today.

It highlights that we can take nothing for granted. Plans have to be fluid – as agile as Nani’s own twinkling feet. Ferguson and Rooney may have ripped up our established thinking and we have to be open to change. That much is “essential”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

              The gap between Berbatov/Tevez and the rest is quite amazing.

    I see Nani referred to as a 'trickster' in the article above. For boredoms sake while I wait for a go of FIFA, which of these cliché terms would you think best describes you as a footballer (in your youth or currently)
    1) Trickster
    2) Poacher
    3) Terrier

          I don't think any are probably appropriate really but I'm industrious. I'm like a shit (clearly), unable to head and one-footed Stewart Downing.

            Tbh my style on the right wing was a lot like kuyt, ran myself into the ground, got a fair few goals and had a decent cross but didn't have the typical wingers twinkle toes.

    For anyone around who isn't in the Millionaire Club & would still be in it if they were, I will be opening up late entries until the start of GW33 when the new rules come in. Simple check your history from GW23 onwards to see if you pass these levels. Prove you pass for entry etc. Might get 5-10 max I suspect. Da Beeeez was one of them from memory.

      If you're chasing, maybe Drogs, if you're defending a lead, Cech. Cech's not going to get more than 6 or 7 per game, Drogs could get 17 (if he plays...).

                Its usually my policy to only take a points hit if you cant field eleven or if its a player with a DGW that GW so id personally just bring them in one at a time. I know alot of people however would tell you its not at all a bad idea to put them both in at once.

          Nope, I would say the question is, which is more signifigant:

          a) the extent to which Lampard is superior to Walcott?
          b) the extent to which Baines is superior to Coleman?

          Unless you don't think Baines IS a better shout than Coleman?

            ell are these season trades or just 2 week punts? Baines is superior to Coleman no doubt. Lampard may well have the same difference to Walcott but is also captain material.

    Half empted to take a 12 pt hit now, doesn't really seem to make sense initially but it does set me up for the remainder of the season..

    Kolarov -> Luiz
    A Young/Nani -> Lamps
    Tevez -> Rooney
    Zigic -> Hoilett (ya i know..)

    If i go with young then the hoilett move is essential if i go Nani then its not.. have i gone mad or might this actually work?

    Probably will need to do it tonight..

      Stick a whole lemon up the ass, but stab the lemon several times with a knife first.
      Roast it on a bed of roughly chopped garlic, onion, carrots and parsnip ( mash these at the end of roasting and add to gravy)
      For the skin ; simply use real butter, sea salt and black pepper.

          Tips for gravy. use the juices from the roast and drop a couple of ice cubes in when hot. This attracts the fat. then spoon off the fat. Put the juice back into your roasting tray and put the roasting tray on your hob. Scrape up the the crunchy/ black bits of roast veg off the roasting tray. Add some Bisto powder and a glass of red wine. Bring to the boil and then turn the heat down. Add a tablespoon of Redcurrant Jelly and season.
          Sorted.

    I've already done Kolarov (OUT) for Luiz (IN). Thinking about whether I absolutely need Lampard or not, and that I actually can't find any good way to get him into my team - but if you notice a way, care to help me out.

    So -

    A. Van der Vaart and Berbatov OUT, Adam and Rooney IN;
    or
    B. Van der Vaart and Berbatov OUT, Adam and Drogba IN?

      Imthinking of going for both

      Tevez -> Drogba/Rooney
      A Young -> Lamps
      Zigic -> Hoilett (funds)

        hoilett is good value at 4.0. his place is nailed on, i just wonder how many goals as a team blackburn can score

    I am hoping one or two of Baird, Adam and Gyan have a rest this GW so I can mine the bench gold of R.Johnson and Odemwingie.
