“Essential” is a big word in Fantasy Football. Invariably, the minute you go throwing it in the direction of player, circumstances twist to render such claims as pure folly. Having lauded Nani an indispensable member of any squad, Alex Ferguson opted to rest the season’s leading Fantasy points scorer in today’s 4-2 win at West Ham. To compound matters, Wayne Rooney emerged from his first-half shell to fire a superb hat-trick. It may just force a rethink.

Nani has, for so long, provided incredibly effective cover for United’s attacking returns. His 9 goals and 16 assists speak for themselves and looked to have locked him into our squads for the duration.

His importance has of course been boosted by an inconsistent Rooney. While Nani has contributed no less than 7 double figure returns in the Fantasy Premier League game, Rooney had mustered 4 in response before today. Five goals in his last 7 league starts had signposted today’s handsome haul, but with Nani firmly planted in our lineups, many Fantasy Managers will have been content to go into the gameweek without Rooney against a West Ham defence that had conceded just a single goal in their last three matches. Today’s events have changed all that.

Suddenly we will be fidgeting on Nani. Today’s decision to bench the Portuguese trickster was surely influenced by Wednesday’s Champions League date with Chelsea, but Antonio Valencia’s assured and effective return to the starting lineup is a worry. Ferguson is a huge fan of the former Wigan winger and his faith in him was rewarded by a showing that provided an assist and more crosses than any other player in the league today.

Park Ji-Sung is another player admired by Ferguson and his return to fitness, along with Ryan Giggs’ evergreen performance, highlights that the United boss now has the resources to shuffle and rest Nani at a whim.

Wayne Rooney’s points haul will inevitably raise his profile at a time when most Fantasy Managers either own or covet Robin Van Persie. With Frank Lampard and an Arsenal midfielder looking strong temptations ahead of gameweek 33 double fixtures, funds for Rooney look scarce.

The inclusion of both Nani and Rooney may also seem like overkill – United had scored 3 goals in 3 league games before today – do they warrant such heavy attacking investment with fixtures falling kindly for Chelsea and Arsenal?

Rooney will have to be considered – tinkering will be done and a route to acquire him will surely be planned by many. Plenty will be pondering the merits of Nani as a result. Unthinkable before today.

It highlights that we can take nothing for granted. Plans have to be fluid – as agile as Nani’s own twinkling feet. Ferguson and Rooney may have ripped up our established thinking and we have to be open to change. That much is “essential”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

my rival has killed me this week. he got osman right before he started scoring, and did the same with merelies over his purple patch. he went into today with rvp. i captained rvp. of coysre rvp did nothing. he doesnt even follow football that closely, he just flukes everything, kind of like when crouch scores a goal with his backside...

he also has tevez, so i'm hoping for the tevez-piles too

top 5 could have been achieved had I not had a couple of very drunken weekends where no transfers were made or captains were changed. Still good fun though and my interest in cricket revived.

As for FF, disaster weekend. Taking out Rooney, leaving Odemwingie on bench and making an 8 point hit. Huge fall

        Yeah I'm keeping Baines.

Coleman has more attacking threat, better fixtures, but gets fewer bonus, and isn't guaranteed 60 minutes.

I'll probably swap'em both out in the end, but seeing as Johnson has a double GW33, I'm gonna take your advice. Coleman out it is.

Nah. They paid a lot for him, and he's done well so far. Maybe at fault for today's goal, but he was player of the month for March, he'll start every game until the end of the season bar injury or something catastrophic.

if we can stay up, we have a decent core to build a team around next year

Fantasy football has completely ruined my interest in football! Yesterday I watched live football constantly from the kick off of the Manu game to the end of the Blackburn game.

Not once did I think about

-the significance of the games to the league table
    -the excitement of the games
    -the overall quality of play...

All I did was watch my players and my rivals' players praying that things went my way. I didn't even check my team's score (Southampton) until the game had finished, when I suddenly remembered they existed.

And I got 37 points, and went down to second in a league table I've led since December. Fantastic!

Ah yes. Forgot, the ARS double. Hard to fit Adam in with Nani, Nasri, Young, Nolan, Lampard.

To get Lamps and Luiz in, I'd have to remove one from Nasri, Nani or Young. No easy matter.

Anyone think ferguson should swallow his pride and buy foster back from Birmingham? In the same way that I bought Adam back 2 weeks after selling him, i can understand that he'd feel slightly sheepish doing so, but it would be a good decision I think.

Also, why do goalkeepers become brilliant when they go to Birmingham?

Just watched highlights.... Rj did not touch the ball for birminghams firs goal, yet was given the assist. I watched it in slow motion and I'm sure he didn't touch it.

Also, does anyone know why he got 3 bonus points? Ok, he had one shot that was saved, but that's about it... Surely foster was better with his string of saves.

As you can guess, I have ridgewell and rivals have Johnson!

In general this season? No. However I fear going into the next couple of gw's without him.
Potential for him score wise is big.
My only concern is who to drop for him, vidic looks on his way (to free up cash) then it comes down to vdv/nani, who admittedly could hammer me.

        Is Lampard worth it?

That's the million dollar question this week since Chelsea's great run of fixtures starts now. I've been looking at how to squeeze him in for a few weeks now, then putting off making a decision on what to do. Drogba looks to be finding some form at last but considering the CL games and rotation is he likely to start the league games as well? No idea.

        With Lampard:

        Nasri Lampard Adam Nani Young

        Rooney DJ Van P

        With Drogba:

        Nasri Jarvis Adam Nani Young

        Rooney Drogba Van P

I'll decide after the CL games but I'm sure whatever choice I make will be the wrong one!

I'd rather go with what I think is best in the long term than what I think is safest. So your rivals have la pard, and you don't think he's worth the cash... Why not look at this as a mistake you can take advantage of? There's always a risk your opponents will get lucky anyway. There's also a chance la pard gets 5 points over 2 games, and your alternative captain goes mental... Sending you flying into orbit

I have all 4 of those & Fabregas on top. I'll probably sell Nasri unless VDV or Nani go down midweek.

With Valencia & Park back + UCL double header Nani = major rotation risk. Nasri is doing great at the moment but at least he has a double coming up. He's also cheaper cash-wise.

it depend on who is the player u are goin to transfer out of your team..

      my midfield lineup..
      adam-nani-nasri-downing-barton
      rooney-welbeck-rvp

..im thinking to transfer out rooney for chelsea forward..but after what rooney had done to westham last night..im tend to change my focus to nani..and bring in chelsea midfielder..lampard..

Nasri and VDV don't seem to score points anymore, Odemwingie is scoring but is so unpredictable so never know when to bench him.
And the players I'm bringing in have nice fixtures and hopefully a good chance of scoring points.
