Once again it was Saturday’s early kick-off that stirred the Fantasy melting pot as United conceded twice but could turn to the class of Wayne Rooney to fire them to three points. Rooney’s stock is rising as Fanatsy Managers lick the wounds inflicted by backing Arsenal’s big guns against Blakburn at the Emirates, only to share in Arsene Wenger’s frustration as the visitors repelled the Gunners weary waves of attacks. Here’s the notes on yesterday’s events…

Wayne Rooney
A 15-minute hat-trick at Upton Park took him to 8 goals in his last 8 league starts. That form looks set to find him transferred in by a huge number of Fantasy Managers having shown an ownership deficit ahead of gameweek 31. Our Members need refer to their OPTA stats for Goal Threat and filter for the last 5 gameweeks for confirmation that Rooney is currently in bloom.

Nani
As discussed in last night’s Knee Jerk, the decision to rest Nani to the bench with Antonio Valencia returning to the starting lineup may well see his owners consider his future given the form demonstrated by Rooney. Nani was obviously rested ahead of the Champions League tie with Chelsea but, with Valencia, Ji-Sung Park and Ryan Giggs as options, there will be concerns that Nani may have his pitch-time cut in the weeks to come.

United’s Formation
Alex Ferguson started with Rooney as a lone striker, with Park and Valencia flanking him. That was soon scrapped following West Ham’s two spot-kicks, with Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov both introduced from the bench. With Fulham at Old Trafford up next, we can surely expect a return to 4-4-2 with Hernandez the favourite to partner Rooney in attack. Wednesday’s Champions League tie will offer more clues on that.

United’s Defence
Although Chris Smalling was outstanding for United, Alex Ferguson’s defence has now kept just 2 clean sheets in 9 league games. Ownership of Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra looks set to continue on its steady decline then. Smalling would be a viable option as a cheap alternative, but with Rio Ferdinand reportedly in line for a return to contention against Fulham, his starting role is far from assured.

Kevin Nolan
He struck his twelfth goal of the season in Newcastle’s 4-1 win over Wolves at St James’ Park. Unfortunately, the Magpies midfielder also earned his tenth booking and will now serve a two-match ban, missing fixtures against Villa and United. Danny Guthrie and Stephen Ireland will now likely start against Villa with Cheik Tiote also banned for that one. Joey Barton was again outstanding but was missed by the FPL Bonus judges – he earned his first assist in 7 starts when he set up Peter Lovenkrands for his goal.

Peter Odemwingie
A sparkling display in West Brom’s 2-1 win over Liverpool earned him 2 assists and 2 FPL Bonus Points – taking him to 21 Bonus for the season. The Nigerian has been an outstanding success in his first season and is currently the form striker in the FPL, despite notching just a single goal in his last seven league appearances. A run of 4 assists and 4 Bonus has boosted his returns, although and he may now earn interest as a result. Short-term fixtures are not in his favour however (sun CHE tot) and the likes of Danny Welbeck and Junior Hoilett are arguably better options in the budget price bracket.

Glen Johnson
The Liverpool right-back suffered a hamstring injury in the first-half of the Hawthorns defeat. Kenny Dalglish suggested that Johnson had sustained a strain and there are now fears that he could join fellow full-back Martin Kelly on the sidelines for a spell. Liverpool’s defensive assets are looking badly stretched with Dan Agger also suffering a knock which is due to be assessed next week.

Roger Johnson
Birmingham lost their clean sheet to Bolton but Johnson continued to shine in their defence. The former Cardiff centre-back earned 3 Bonus Points for the fourth time this season – he has now accumulated 20 Bonus this season – more than any other defender in the league.

Ben Foster
He was the other defensive barrier responsible for Birmingham clinging to three points – Foster made a string of superb saves, returning 2 supplementary points for his owners along with 2 Bonus Points. Foster has made more saves and earned more Bonus than any other keeper in the league.

Leon Osman
He continues to flourish in the absence of bigger names in the Everton midfield. Osman has stepped up his game in terms of goal attempts and has earned 2 goals and an assist in his last 4 league starts, along with 5 Bonus Points. Against Villa he could and should have scored twice as David Moyes employed the impish midfielder in the support role for Jermaine Beckford up front. With Tim Cahill edging his way back to fitness he may not stay in that position but, at just 5.6, Osman is certainly in that hat for a mid-price consideration with Wolves and Blackburn up next.

Leighton Baines
Justified his selection in the Scout Picks by converting Everton’s first penalty of the season. Baines’ set-piece involvement paid off then and the former Wigan man enjoyed another productive match down the left flank. He remains key a top five defensive acquisition in our Watchlist; Saturday’s return only cemented his ranking further.

Seamus Coleman
Replaced on 51 minutes with no apparent injury, Coleman returned just a single point for his owners. While Baines demonstrated consistent returns from left-back, Coleman remains a frustration for Fantasy Managers in his right-wing role. At times he looks to have an assured starting role, at others, he looks at risk – even with Everton’s resources stretched.

Darren Bent
A superbly taken brace at Goodison moved him onto 4 goals in his last seven appearances for Villa. With strong fixtures ahead of him (NEW whm STK wba WIG), Bent will surely continue to pick up further interest from Fantasy Managers who may well be considering trading Ashley Young for the likes of Charlie Adam whilst covering Villa’s run-in with Bent.

Rafael Van der Vaart
The Dutchman drew at blank in a largely dire encounter at the DW Stadium. It’s now just one goal and a single assist in last six league appearances for Van der Vaart which will surely raise question marks over his status in our squads. Subbed on 67 minutes having been replaced with 20 minutes to go against Bolton, Van der Vaart was obviously preserved for Tottenham’s midweek Champions League tie with Real Madrid. Harry Redknapp’s side follow that tie with a run of fixtures that promote his players in our thinking, with four home matches in the next five (STK ARS WBA che BLP/mcy). That will surely ensure that Van der Vaart is a popular Fantasy target, despite his run of form.

Luka Modric
While Van der Vaart’s Fantasy output has diminished, the little Croatian has come to the fore via an extraordinary run of FPL Bonus Points. That continued as Wigan as Modric picked up another couple – he has gathered either 2 or 3 Bonus in 7 of his last 9 league starts.

Charles N’Zogbia
Even Modric had to bow to Wigan’s Bonus King. N’Zogbia hovered up another maximum FPL Bonus haul – the sixth time this season that the 5.5 Wigan winger has claimed the maximum in a match. N’Zogiba now has 26 Bonus for the season – only Carlos Tevez and Charlie Adam can better that.

Samir Nasri
So long a contender for Player of the Year, Nasri’s stock has declined of late with no goal or assist in his last seven league appearances for the Gunners. Nasri’s performance in the frustrating 0-0 draw with Blackburn was not helped by a first-half blow to the head that left Nasri dazed and confused as he sought to undo a determined Rovers rearguard effort. Significantly, both Andrey Arshavin and Theo Waclott were withdrawn before Nasri – indication Arsene Wenger regards Nasri as a key component other these other two Fantasy options in the Arsenal midfield.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lampard? Discuss. Im thinking of doing Nani/A.Young -> Malouda rather then destroying my midfield.

He will get decent returns in the next 4 weeks, almost guaranteed.

Wigan, WBA, Brum, Spurs. I'd get him.

      Lampard/Luiz for me.

I'd need to lose two of Nani, VDV or Young for O'hara and Lampard then.

Actually. Now concocting a plan of doing VDV -> Lamps this week, then Nasri back to Bale/VDV/Modric in GW34 should funds allow...... Must tinker with that one a little bit more.

i don't know why people even thought of getting nasri

as an arsenal fan, he isn't going to do that well in fantasy terms. he will have a a week or so where he might get 1 but other than that it's pointless. he's a mincer. we need him to run with the ball looking for space. then he passes to walcott or rvp then we score (if at all nowadays). so he assists the assist. he has not much chances of set pieces either. walcott is the man you want. i'm so disappointed yesterday though, cos he didn't do anything and it was his worst performance. he looked tired or back from injury but he will be back you'll see.

So he hasn't score 9 goals himself in the league this year then?
He might assist the assist as you say but he's also a threat and has a good chance for BPs.

Rooney apologises for 'outburst' all over sky sports!?! Jesus Christ the man used the f word!
What kind of sheltered lives do these 'offended' people live? It's impossible to watch a match without seeing players effing and blinding at the officials, but because his was actually heard the world of football is outraged and shocked and people are calling for him to be banned!! When we lip-read a player shouting 'f*ck off' at a linesman today (and we will) will there be calls for him to be banned?

Yeah but it was live on tv at lunch time and he shouted into the camera. In any other live tv situation there'd be an apology. Apparently, my step mum turned the sound off at that point, so my little brothers had to watch it silence.(the 7 yr old has Rooney on the back of his England shirt)

"Stephen Ireland will now likely start against Villa"

Unfortunately he won't be as Pardew already stated recently that he can't play against Villa as part of the loan deal agreement. Thank god we got him on a pay per play deal :S

    Probable midfield will be RTaylor-Barton-Guthrie-Jonas

Ryan Taylor is back from suspension so could play RM, or even RB pushing Simpson on the wing again. Either that or young Shane Ferguson could play LW with Jonas playing RW. Such a threadbare squad, thanks Mike. 🙁

Most of the Carroll money is actually being used to extend current players deals. Tiote just signed a new 6 year deal, so his £30k a week wages over those 6 years already takes £9m away from the £35m we got for Carroll. If Barton and Enrique sign in the summer then we'll have feck all left for new players.

Good times for Newcastle fans 😯

I'd be interested to work out the chance that an early transferred player results in an injury. I.e. If it's something like 1 in 15 transfers, you're only losing - 1/15th of 4 points on average... And if it's always for a 0.1 million rise, that's 3 million for about quarter of a point.

      If that makes sense?

I mean... What's the chance a random (fit) player will get injured within 1 week when he's playing x games (in this case no games)

That's your approximate chance of Luiz getting injured. Right?

But it's also another player in your squad getting injured. Especially long term that the transfer would have been better used on

Errr...injuries and transfers? It's like measuring how often a player you transfer in scores in his next match. You might find they only do it one in ten cases, but that wouldn't put you off doing transfers all together.

And you'd be using a tiny and biased sample of players-only ones you choose to transfer early.

Whether you're going to transfer him is irrelevant. The number we're looking for is the chance he gets injured in the next 6 days.

If it's low enough, you should transfer him because it's worth the risk for a price rise. (based on what you think it's worht)

"I’d be interested to work out the chance that an early transferred player results in an injury."

You've refined it a bit now, but that's what I was replying to. What about players who are just dropped or not tactically suitable for the next match? You'd need to include that in your calculation.

At the end of it, you'd just have a number that's meaningless- what's more important is the player. Is it van Persie (10 injuries a season) or Lampard (10 injuries a career)?

But you can only work on averages. just like you don't know if a player will score but you know his form and his history and his opponent.

Anyway, the chance that he gets injured if I transfer him in is the same as the chance if I don't transfer it in... So I just worded it wrong to reflect the question.

Of course with exceptions like van Persie you'd have to think twice!

I'm saying that the average in this case is totally meaningless and doesn't help you in any way at all.

Well I think it's better than just assuming it's always bad to make an early transfer

At least I'm thinking about risk in terms of the positives not just the negatives like everyone seems to do regarding early transfers and 4 points hits

Ive been stung with injuries a few times but if they dont have a mid week game and you wont be able to afford after the rise then get now.

Now really the time of the season to be making profits on player prices.

first half of the season it's good to build up team value and take some risks with early transfers to hit rises.. this deep in the season it's worth waiting for all the injury news and make your transfer as late as possible, unless you're down to the last 0.1m to get the player you want.

no - becasue the rest of your team might play, or might get injured in training etc. you never know and are asking for trouble. really only do if you wont be able to afford the player otherwise, and even then only if that player is essential to your plans

If none of your players play mid-week then yes I'd say it's worth it, especially early in the season when building value is very important. At this stage of the season I'd generally wait till late and miss the rise, often news about players carrying knocks from the previous round won't surface until Friday press conferences etc.

Thinking about going WITHOUT Lampard in my team, simply because my bad planning has caused me to have no decent way fitting him in.
Already done Luiz IN, Kolarov OUT.

    Contemplating the following transfers:
Berbatov and Nasri OUT, Drogba and Adam IN.

That would give me both Arsenal coverage (RVP, Fabregas), Chelsea coverage (Lampard, Drogba) and I would still have some decent Man Utd coverage in Nani.

    Yay or nay?

To bojangles this is the best thing i've seen about the finances of football - swissramble.

    http://swissramble.blogspot.com/2010/12/newcastle-uniteds-finances-in-black-and.html

newcastle turnover to wage ratio at 83% in 2008/09. so almost all the money the club gets 83% goes to the players and managers. at least you're not blackburn, i still think venky's don't have a clue what they've got themselves in for. india is a much different place to the west - they've bought a bankrupt company and one mistake boom they go into administration.

anyway look at those £100m loans to 'mike ashley', they are no interest so you're right carroll's fee wasn't spent to pay the interest on them. mike ashley wants to find a 'buyer' who will 'writeoff' the debt. who the hell wants to buy a football club with now £300m loans that they will write-off, he's living in cloud cuckooland
