Having looked seemingly unstoppable in the opening quarter of the season, Chelsea and their Fantasy assets fell away. As discussed in today’s “Frisking the Fixtures” however, Carlo Ancelotti’s side are about to embark on a run of opponents that provide a platform for a run of results and performances that has their key players ascending to the very top of our Watchlists.

Certainly that is the case with today’s refresh of our own player rankings. Chelsea dominate in three of four positions in our Watchlist – as can be seen in your right-hand sidebars.

It starts in goal, where Petr Cech has climbed back to the pinnacle of our rankings, overtaking the potential offered by Ben Foster, despite the Birmingham keeper’s outstanding display against Bolton. Birmingham may have a double fixture in gameweek 33, but Chelsea’s prospects look stronger. Birmingham are without a shut-out in five and have other prime assets in the back four to plunder (Roger Johnson), while Cech is a relatively cheap and secure route to Chelsea’s potential defensive returns.

Blackburn’s Paul Robinson is the notable addition to our rankings. The Rovers keeper climbs back into the reckoning with three home fixtures in four and off the back of Blackburn’s fine display at the Emirates.

There’s been very little movement at the top of the defender rankings. Chelsea’s David Luiz is still the top target – despite a less than convincing performance at Stoke. European ineligibility continues to help his cause amongst Ancelotti’s rotating back four. Behind the Brazilian we have Everton’s assist machine Leighton Baines holding second spot, with Villa’s Kyle Walker keeping third with his forthcoming run of opponents.

Like team-mate Robinson, Rovers skipper Chris Samba benefits from his display against Arsenal and the run of Ewood Park encounters that offer opportunity for boost in his points tally. Young Bonus magnet Phil Jones is another consideration – he made his return to the starting XI at the Emirates in a holding midfield role – more on him later this week.

The midfielder rankings have a new top two with Alex Ferguson’s decision to rest Nani helping to topple him from the apex. Frank Lampard and Charlie Adam are currently “most wanted” by Fantasy Managers – both have a very strong run of fixtures and the influence and set-piece roles within their respective teams to capitalise. Nani, who should make a return against Fulham in gameweek 32, has to settle for third spot.

There’s little to choose between those amongst the chasing pack – they’re all potentially devastating Fantasy targets, but all have a drawback to consider right now. Cesc Fabregas replaces the out-of-form Samir Nasri as our top ranked Arsenal midfielder, but his match fitness is still in question having been reduced to a bench role against Rovers on Saturday.

Rafael Van der Vaart, like Nasri, has been a major disappointment of late. Much has been made of his pitch time and his relationship with Harry Redknapp but, behind this smokescreen, the statistics show that the Dutchman has scored just a single goal in 6 league starts and that came from the spot against Bolton. His Fantasy stock needs a revival against Stoke this weekend – whether it gets it depends on whether Van der Vaart comes through tonight’s Madrid tie and avoids weekend rotation.

Lower down the list, Theo Walcott is perhaps the weapon of choice for those looking for a potentially powerful differential. The speedster struggled to make an impression against Blackburn, but clearly carries a major goal threat that could come to fruition over the Gunners’ run of fixture that includes the gameweek 33 double.

Robin Van Persie holds to our top spot amongst the strikers – thanks in the main to Wayne Rooney’s possible suspension that has the United man drop out of our rankings. Rooney’s absence boosts the stock of Javier Hernandez but the Mexican is still trailing both Darren Bent of Villa and the in-form Luis Suarez who will surely be a key figure over Liverpool’s tough run of opponents to come.

Further down the rankings you’ll find a whole array of quality available for a budget price. The likes of Daniel Sturridge, Junior Hoilett and Danny Welbeck all offer exceptional value over the coming gameweeks; if you’re looking to plough money into your midfield – these three look ready-made solutions to free up funds in attack.

You can add Sylvan Ebanks-Blake into that bracket too, along with Blackpool’s DJ Campbell who will return for an unusually shot-shy Blackpool, just in time for four straight home matches. Simmering below them, Bobby Zamora’s brace on Sunday has him waiting for a climb up the rankings once his fixtures improve with Fulham’s gameweek 34 double.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Comical Sky still bashing Adebayor with his 2 goals

I wonder if him leaving Skys product has anything to do with their nonsense biased view towards the lad

I was amazed by how biased the commentary was in Spur's favour. Basically every time Real commited a foul, they thought it should be a booking.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, part of the Liverpool side that won the 2005 Champions League final after his side trailed 3-0 to AC Milan at half-time, on his side's prospects of reaching the last four:

"This is not even close to being done, we have seen some great comebacks and we have to be ready. They will push us from the first minute and we must be careful. We needed to be patient tonight and as soon as we got the second they were down and it was easier to get the third and fourth."

If they continue like they have been playing this season they do deserve to win it for sure.

It's not because they're better than us or anything, just I dislike the club, the way they went after Fabregas in the summer wasn't nice.

They have plenty of quality players, play lovely football and probably deserve to win it. Not that part of them I dislike.

Tottenham never really recovered after the red card and were just pinned in their final third for majority of the game and that didn't help modric's game plus the 3 4 real players that would just surround him everytime he got the ball.

Surely Modric is the type of player who needs Tottenham to have outlets and possession of the ball. However, defensive compactness, when chasing a game, is not his strength. He didn't actually do much wrong whilst on the ball.

Disagree strongly, everytime he got it he Wilshered himself into trouble and lost it, thereby creating a good chance for Real as Spurs were caught off guard. It's how Di Maria's goal happened and it was far from the only time.

I absolutely love Luka Modric but that was staggeringly poor.

Did well up until half-time but gave away all four goals needlessly. It was always going to be hard and they made too many mistakes.

            VDV was tactical.

I suppose I'm not saying the end result was always good when he was on the ball. I distinctly remember lots of times where he close control was exceptional. I do remember there was a couple of times he lost it but I just don't think he had many options. It must also be so frustrating for a player of that quality to not be able to play your game.

p.s. i like the term Wilshered. Thinking of trademarking it?! 🙂

I see your point, there were hardly many good balls for him to play. We obviously didn't see how Defoe and Bale were running in the second half as the camera crew just focused their cameras on Tottenham's half and left for tea but seems they were picked up easily.

Hah no I won't, afraid the Arsenal jerk circle will come for me if I do.

he died as the game went on. think he just got a bit disillusioned with the match, every time he finally managed to turn alonso or khedeira he had nothing going on in front of him almost relied on the bale pass every time. a poor game from him but given how overwhelmed he was there at times i sympathise with him

you may have stumped me there, i'm not going to pretend i know where and how he plays for mexico.
i'll be a bit cheeky and specify in the premier league, a more physical league where he would have to be more of a hold up player and distributor.
jeez i'm not slagging him off just saying he's not this godly striker. other than his impressive strike away in valencia all his goals so far for united have come against relegation fodder or late on in dead games. i want to see more before getting carried away

It's about time we got some bloody luck/decisions at the bridge, so i want to say 0-8 Utd.
I'm fully aware of Chelsea's record vs us there though, even though we should have our first 11 playing tomorrow. I'll go for a sensible 1-1.

couldn't ask for more I suppose. I can see 2 very tight games much like the liverpool v chelsea champs league games. Is Rio fit? He's badly needed if you're to get a result imo.

I *think* so. He's trained for a week, so you'd imagine he'd be able to play at least 60 mins. One things for sure, i'll be repeating my decision to stay off this board during a chelsea Utd game. It was absolute carnage last time when i chose to have a wee sneak peak.

When he went down holding his leg, it was priceless comedy!

Bale can't handle the rough stuff. he was highly rated in my mind last season, but this year he's proven to be another fancy winger who can't mark or tackle anyone...And is injury prone.

He's like the Welsh Theo Walcott

    Question.

I planned to sell Tevez this week but I don't know for who. I was think Suarez so I can do the Nasrite to Lampard. Is Suarez a risky move this week?

    ps. I don't care about the Nasrite's double. He'll get a cool 5 pts.
