Tottenham’s spirited Champions League campaign hit the buffers in Madrid with Emmanuel Adebayor returning to torment Harry Redknapp. Robbed of Aaron Lennon’s menace in attack, the Spurs boss was powerless as Peter Crouch saw red early on; his ten men were swept aside thereafter. Here’s the notes on events from the Bernabéu …

Things started badly for Harry Redknapp even before a ball had been kicked. Aaron Lennon, cited by the Spurs boss as key attacking weapon on the counter-attack, was withdrawn from the starting XI late on through illness…

“We lost Aaron just as the teams were walking on the pitch. He didn’t feel well enough to play so we had to change straight away….He hadn’t been feeling great all day. I said ‘are you ok?’ and he said ‘I don’t feel like I have any strength or energy to run’, so I had to pull him out.”

The early Emmanuel Adebayor header and the two reckless challenges which earned Peter Crouch a red on 15 minutes, set the tone for the evening. Spurs never got to grips with Real in midfield and were overrun as Jose Mourinho’s side mercilessly unravelled their resistance in the second-half.

For Fantasy Managers the result should be a blessing in disguise. Despite Mourinho’s claims that Tottenham still have life left in them, the tie is surely over and next week’s second-leg at the Lane is a formality. Redknapp must now regroup his squad and concentrate his efforts on sealing fourth spot and another season of Champions League football. Given Man City’s threat, that will be no easy task and will surely see the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Rafeal van der Vaart (subbed on 45 minutes last night) regularly deployed in the Spurs starting lineup.

While those attacking riches will be key to Tottenham’s chances of a top four finish, Redknapp has continued injury problems at the back. Vedran Corluka is his latest concern – he suffered an ankle injury in last night’s game and was forced off on 80 minutes.

Tottenham host Stoke on Saturday and with Alan Hutton out for the season and Corluka a doubt, Redknapp has major problems at right-back. William Gallas had previously filled in that position and may well be forced to do so again. Sebastian Bassong looks likely to start alongside Michael Dawson this weekend then.

The Stoke encounter is the first of three consecutive home matches with a double also to follow in gameweek 36 (STK ARS WBA che BLP/mcy). Although that run includes tough and crucial matches against Arsenal, Chelsea and City, Fantasy interest in Tottenham’s squad, particularly the attacking assets, is set to steadily increase given the incentive for Redknapp’s side to earn results.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    1. would you rather have drogba or a 2nd chelsea defender for gw 33?

    2. Pick one from Gyan/Sturridge/SEB for the run in.. I don't like Sturridge's DGW very much.. not impressed by Sunderland's scoring potential and would much rather get Gyan instead of Welbeck

Not really, Dawson is a good option, but after that, too much rotation potential and bad form up front so that leaves VDV (off form, injury prone) Bale (same) & Lennon who might be ok once he gets some calpol down.

😆 I was listening to Ken Early there on newstalk last night, he was at the AF press conference, they were told he would be answering no Q's on Ronney so of course the first 2 Q's were about Rooney, AF snapped and Ken said he started grinning when suddenly he got the evil monkey stare of Alex and what did he do? What every 12yr old does when they're in trouble- looked down at his lap sheepishly 🙂

On the contrary, I think VDV may be redundant as a fantasy prospect now, and I am starting to see why he may have sruggled with previous clubs, his attitude.

Not saying that is what happened last night, as he was playing lone striker and not actually being a striker, but that chance from Bale's superb throw was a good one. We have seen such a decline in his fitness and form that he is becoming the most likely target OUT for me in the next few weeks, yes, despite Spurs fixtures, but will give it some thought.

He really has to do something this weekend for me to consider keeping him. Also, why VDV off last night? Why not Jenas? I mean if VDV is regarded as such an integral creative player, how come he was sacrificed? Fitness? Strop? Who knows.

On the plus, and I am sure I am simply repeating what everyone on here was saying last night, but Bale was an absolute credit to himself last night, he was a menace to all, he may have played for too many free kicks by poking past and looking for the hit, but that sensational chesting down of the ball into the box in the first half summed him up for me, electric. Pity the shot was wide, because it is rare that I have almost gasped with a "simple" chest down. Would LOVE to see him at United, take out the cheque book Fergie.

I agree about VdV's fpl prospects: he looks spent, tired, annoyed, occasionally indifferent. I think he was hauled off last night because he's plainly not fit and he gave the ball away in bad areas a couple of times.

VdV probs at prev clubs appear to have been a combination of attitude and fitness.

I have him so got to decide if i'm keeping or not. Thinking of swapping him for Modric but not sure if that move is really worth using a transfer on.

VdV is prob still more likely to score and still has pens in his favour.

I think if you have VdV already its prob best to keep him until after the dgw and reassess it then.

I know its a sad day when your happy Young Boys of Bern get put out of the Europa League so you get two CL spots. Next year we only have one which is why we need to win the league. I think with scottish football on the doward spiral we're in trouble. But on a personal move a rangers takeover looks iminant which is needed.

he's a sure starter for sure, if I could wildcard I would consider him. Chico is an amazing player, for consistency this season I'd have to say he's the transfer of the season (in the Premiership).

My advice would be to wait and see what happens in the game tonight. I think he's a differential most people (including myself) are overlooking, his form is indesputable.

Have 2 free transfers, have Tevez and Zigic (yes, I know he has a double coming up, but he is injured and rubbish) to ship, have 2.3 in the bank, am thinking:

    Tevez OUT RVP IN
    VDV OUT O'Hara IN
    Zigic OUT Drogba IN

I think it's time to bring the Drog out for a walk and stretch his ruthless legs again? 4 point hit, 2 double players coming in.

I am thinking of selling VDV, see above, but having looked at FPL I am thinking Nasri OUT rather than VDV to Cleverley rather than O'Hara, Clevs will stay on bench for 90% of games.

I think with form VDV is the best guy to ship, can't see them doing a whole lot of damage with their heads down the way they will be.

I agree their heads will be down but I think they'l need to push for the 4th spot and with their fixture they are games they can win.

I do see your point on VDV but im not completely sold on it. Im going for Jarvis or Ohara over Cleverley

I'm taking a gamble on Demba Ba these next two weeks, fixtures are okish nothing special but the guy looks in good form and importantly he does not have a blank in 33 like most of the cheaper strike options. I'll bring in Seb for him after GW 33.

Chelsea strikers are a HUGE rest risk.

The CL is Chelsea's best chance of a trophy, agreed?

Therefore I can see Ancelotti making changes on Saturday and resting players for the Wigan game, with the return leg at OT in 6 days time.
3 games in 6 days is a lot, and I can see definite rotation between Torress, Drogba and Anelka.
I could see Mikel or Kalou coming in against Wigan.

IMO, Lampard, Drogba and Torres are risky.

Luiz is almost a certainty due to his CL ineligibility.

Just a thought. It might be wiser to wait till next week to bring in Chelsea players, till we know the outcome of the CL tie.

for everyone goin nani as captain this week i wouldn't be very confident. Fulham have the second best away defensive record in the league. only man city and chelsea have conceded less on the road and they are only one goal better off. add to that tonight's exertions in what should be a very competitive and physical battle and the lack of their most creative player (rooney). also Fulham ain't conceded more than 2 on their league travels all season. just my tuppence regarding the captaincy 🙂

What are people doing with Coleman? He is becoming a pain in my ass getting subbed off early and generally not getting clean sheets all season anyway.

The general lack of goals and assists for an "OOP" player doesn't make him a very good OOP player does it? Him and Kolarov are on borrowed time in my team.
