Tottenham’s spirited Champions League campaign hit the buffers in Madrid with Emmanuel Adebayor returning to torment Harry Redknapp. Robbed of Aaron Lennon’s menace in attack, the Spurs boss was powerless as Peter Crouch saw red early on; his ten men were swept aside thereafter. Here’s the notes on events from the Bernabéu …

Things started badly for Harry Redknapp even before a ball had been kicked. Aaron Lennon, cited by the Spurs boss as key attacking weapon on the counter-attack, was withdrawn from the starting XI late on through illness…

“We lost Aaron just as the teams were walking on the pitch. He didn’t feel well enough to play so we had to change straight away….He hadn’t been feeling great all day. I said ‘are you ok?’ and he said ‘I don’t feel like I have any strength or energy to run’, so I had to pull him out.”

The early Emmanuel Adebayor header and the two reckless challenges which earned Peter Crouch a red on 15 minutes, set the tone for the evening. Spurs never got to grips with Real in midfield and were overrun as Jose Mourinho’s side mercilessly unravelled their resistance in the second-half.

For Fantasy Managers the result should be a blessing in disguise. Despite Mourinho’s claims that Tottenham still have life left in them, the tie is surely over and next week’s second-leg at the Lane is a formality. Redknapp must now regroup his squad and concentrate his efforts on sealing fourth spot and another season of Champions League football. Given Man City’s threat, that will be no easy task and will surely see the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Rafeal van der Vaart (subbed on 45 minutes last night) regularly deployed in the Spurs starting lineup.

While those attacking riches will be key to Tottenham’s chances of a top four finish, Redknapp has continued injury problems at the back. Vedran Corluka is his latest concern – he suffered an ankle injury in last night’s game and was forced off on 80 minutes.

Tottenham host Stoke on Saturday and with Alan Hutton out for the season and Corluka a doubt, Redknapp has major problems at right-back. William Gallas had previously filled in that position and may well be forced to do so again. Sebastian Bassong looks likely to start alongside Michael Dawson this weekend then.

The Stoke encounter is the first of three consecutive home matches with a double also to follow in gameweek 36 (STK ARS WBA che BLP/mcy). Although that run includes tough and crucial matches against Arsenal, Chelsea and City, Fantasy interest in Tottenham’s squad, particularly the attacking assets, is set to steadily increase given the incentive for Redknapp’s side to earn results.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Here’s my team, would appreciate any advice!

    Foster Al-Habsi
    Vidic Kolorov Kelly Walker Coleman
Barton Fabregas Yaya Toure VdV Nani
    Van Persie Tevez Odemwingie

I was thinking about bringing in Luiz this week for Kolorov, only have one free transfer available with £1.6 million in the bank

Anyone think Odemwingie to Welbeck for a 4 point hit will be a good idea?

    Any ideas please?

I'm struggling with the idea of getting rid of Odem. He's been consistently good, he just had a blip where Woy wasn't playing him.

      I should play him more.

Keep Odemwingie and play him. Sunderland's defense is looking dodgy and West Brom are getting better. I would do the Luiz transfer for sure.

        Appreciate the responses guys!

Yeah my current thought is to do Kolorov to Luiz and play a 4-4-2 by benching Barton Yaya and Kelly. I never really wanted to play Odemwingie against Arsenal and Liverpool but he's scored well so thinking to keep him, otherwise the only other change I could make is to bring in Adam for Barton? Anyone think thats a wise move?

Bringing in Welbeck could allow me to do Fabregas to Lampard for his double Gameweek i suppose?

Indeed. I'm going to stick my neck out and say I'm right, based on what Zamora said in that Guardian article.

      It's an odd one indeed!

Dempsey took a penalty when Murphy was on the pitch but it was after he had already scored so maybe that was something to do with it?

Because next time I'm pretty sure Murphy took it. But then when Zamora was on the pitch he took them ahead of Murphy (Pretty sure Murphy was still on the pitch anyway :P)

I'd say Zamora is first choice, which was part of the reason for me getting him in - lets hope I'm not wrong!

Danny Murphy is first choice, although there was one occasion when Dempsey took one when Murphy was on the pitch. Dempsey has since missed a penalty and handed the ball to Zamora to take one.

I'm guessing the order is: Murphy, Zamora, Dempsey.

    A)

    Coleman - Luiz
    Rooney - Bent

    OR

    B)
    Coleman - Luiz
    Young - Jarvis/Ohara
    Rooney - Drogba

    A means i play 3 Villa this week, B means i still need a GK for 33.

    Any advice at the mo??

OK, this is a strange question, but my transfer options require me to consider the question. Which of these is a better option for the next two weeks:

    Walcott facing (blp) and (LIV/tot)
    Baines, facing (wol) and (BLB)

    or

    Kolarov facing (liv)
    Walker facing (whm)
    Nani facing (FUL) and (new)

And if you aggree with me that the first option is probably better, is it four points better?

it would be one of the greatest cinderella stories for sure, but I don't think it's even worth thinking about. If you think about Real getting 1 goal, (which is highly likely) then it becomes stupidly impossible.

Yeah I'm kind of leaning towards VDV now. Nasri's double isn't great but its still a double at the end of the day.

I'm doing the thing you should never do and thinking Young is due another good score, hes hit the bar a couple of times last few games and got an assist last weekend.

Nani - been so consistent and once I get rid I couldn't really afford to get back again.

VDV - like you said hasn't done anything recently, and doesn't seem likely to while playing in a 4-4-2

Yeah, I've still got Young hanging around. That's the thing, he IS playing pretty much up front and he's come close, it's hard to sell a player like that. So although VDV is a better player in a better team, he doesn't look so much like scoring as Young.

My mother does, back at home at the age of 29 to fund a move to the U.S. in June (I always feel obliged to explain myself), yum.

White meat all the way, I don't like the slimeyness of the greay parts sometimes, but, the there is something about the grey meat that is much tastier. Favourite thing about roast chicken? Putting a sh*tload of pepper and salt on the skin so that when it turns crispy it tastes savage!

Love crispy skin! If Donna doesn't get to it first... she carves, so she usually picks it off.

No - I like it crisped in a tin in the oven beneath the roast

And below - I don't see it either - brown meat has more myoglobin proteins, the magic stuff that ships oxygen to the muscle cells.

It tends to contain far more vitamins and nutrients and be generally better for you.

Cooked a chicken last night. Shoved that stuffing well into the chicken. More tasty with the flavors of the chicken.

But the chicken takes longer. I prefer a lemon in the chicken and sperate stuffing.

You're right. It does take longer. Lemon thing never appealed to me though

This would be my team for this week, after a free and a -4 hit.

    Foster
    Luiz, Kolarov, Huth, Coleman
    Lampard, Nani, Downing, Meireles, Jarvis
    Van Persie (c)

Bench: Al Habsi, Djourou, Rooney, Zigic

    Thoughts? Agree?

Does anyone know if Ameobi is likely to be on penalties for Newcastle now that he is back in the side?

Cheers. I know they have a few tough fixtures left but he can be benched for those and played against blp, BIR and WBA. Need a few differentials as 60 points behind in my mini league so may take a punt on him to free up some cash.
