Tottenham’s spirited Champions League campaign hit the buffers in Madrid with Emmanuel Adebayor returning to torment Harry Redknapp. Robbed of Aaron Lennon’s menace in attack, the Spurs boss was powerless as Peter Crouch saw red early on; his ten men were swept aside thereafter. Here’s the notes on events from the Bernabéu …

Things started badly for Harry Redknapp even before a ball had been kicked. Aaron Lennon, cited by the Spurs boss as key attacking weapon on the counter-attack, was withdrawn from the starting XI late on through illness…

“We lost Aaron just as the teams were walking on the pitch. He didn’t feel well enough to play so we had to change straight away….He hadn’t been feeling great all day. I said ‘are you ok?’ and he said ‘I don’t feel like I have any strength or energy to run’, so I had to pull him out.”

The early Emmanuel Adebayor header and the two reckless challenges which earned Peter Crouch a red on 15 minutes, set the tone for the evening. Spurs never got to grips with Real in midfield and were overrun as Jose Mourinho’s side mercilessly unravelled their resistance in the second-half.

For Fantasy Managers the result should be a blessing in disguise. Despite Mourinho’s claims that Tottenham still have life left in them, the tie is surely over and next week’s second-leg at the Lane is a formality. Redknapp must now regroup his squad and concentrate his efforts on sealing fourth spot and another season of Champions League football. Given Man City’s threat, that will be no easy task and will surely see the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Rafeal van der Vaart (subbed on 45 minutes last night) regularly deployed in the Spurs starting lineup.

While those attacking riches will be key to Tottenham’s chances of a top four finish, Redknapp has continued injury problems at the back. Vedran Corluka is his latest concern – he suffered an ankle injury in last night’s game and was forced off on 80 minutes.

Tottenham host Stoke on Saturday and with Alan Hutton out for the season and Corluka a doubt, Redknapp has major problems at right-back. William Gallas had previously filled in that position and may well be forced to do so again. Sebastian Bassong looks likely to start alongside Michael Dawson this weekend then.

The Stoke encounter is the first of three consecutive home matches with a double also to follow in gameweek 36 (STK ARS WBA che BLP/mcy). Although that run includes tough and crucial matches against Arsenal, Chelsea and City, Fantasy interest in Tottenham’s squad, particularly the attacking assets, is set to steadily increase given the incentive for Redknapp’s side to earn results.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Got 2 plans floating round in my head:

    A)
    this week: Coleman > Walker
next week: Huth > Terry, Zigic > Welbeck (4 points)

    B)
this week: VDV > Walcott, Huth > Terry (4 points)
    next week: nothing

Seems like a bad week to get rid of VDV at home to Stoke, but Walcott also has a great fixture and a double to follow, and if I don't lose VDV I have to make an extra transfer to get Terry in, and lose Zigic before his double which also seems stupid.

Now is a good time to feel a bit better about shipping VDV, fixtures are nothing special, he is way way out of form and fitness.

I am not in agreement that now, or even next week is an opportune time to get rid of Huth with a double in 2 weeks. Agree with Coleman OUT Walker IN this week, Villa have a handy enough fixtures and it gets a guaranteed starter in for a player with major question marks hanging over his head, next week I would prefer Van Der Vaart OUT Walcott IN, and having looked at your team again it is not a bad shout to do Huth OUT next week for Terry, but you may regret it the following week.

    From previous page:

Looking at using my free and a 4pt hit to get this team for this GW:

    Foster
    Luiz, Kolarov, Huth, Coleman
    Lampard, Nani, Downing, Meireles, Jarvis
    Van Persie (c)

Bench: Al Habsi, Zigic, Djourou, Rooney

    Thoughts? Agree?

          Nil a Shean!

It's just the combination of rotation/injury/bad fixtures that make it a dicey-as-f*ck defense for me.

Getting shot of VDV and Nasri huh? I have Nasri and VDV and both are on the chopping block for me, but I am going to give Nasri one more game as he is not as horribly out of form or injury prone as VDV, but I know you have to do both to afford Lampard, who should score well this weekend, so good moves.

That being said, spending 4 on Lampard makes sense where he is playing a double next week, BUT so is Nasri, so to replace Nasri this week who has a double next week and nothing else to focus on may be a mistake with Blackpool this weekend.

Long run, I would prefer Lampard, so in my view, it is just about a good move.

Interesting that you are keeping Zigic, double or not, he is on the chopping block for me I think, no guarantee he will play both or even one at the moment, Philips was being talked up big time by Big Eck, so I am not sure if it may be something you re-consider.

Appreciate all the responses. Defence is my next priority to sort out, but I knew that I'd need to take a 4pt hit to get Lampard in, and I'd rather do that now, so I can take advantage of him playing Wigan and then having a double to make up the points.

Will sort out defence next week, possibly looking to take advantage of the DGW with someone like Roger Johnson.

As for Nasri, I'm really torn about getting him out just before a DGW, but I think I prefer Lampard as a DGWer, and I have RVP as Arsenal cover.

        Thanks again for the responses.

One more question - who needs to go first in my defence - Coleman? And who for?

Oh, and Zigic will be out pretty soon, just giving it another week or two to see which cheaper striker hits form, and to see if Carroll comes back strong, then I'll get him in GW35 sort of time when his fixtures get good.

only because he is more expensive, and he has a blank soon, I would be getting rid of Kolarov before Coleman, and I am thinking Luiz myself, Terry if you have Luiz, think 2 Chelsea defenders and Fat Frank/Drogba are ideal for the run in, just not sold I want either of the latter two for the moment

you would only want Rooney for the next GW, don't do it in my opinion. That is an excellent strike force for the run-in.

You have money in the bank, so I would do Djourou OUT Luiz IN most definitely and what about Coleman OUT Terry IN? As tempting as it is to have Lamps or Drog/Torres, I think there is too much uncertainty in Chelsea's attacking ranks, and I think doubling up on their defence is the way to go.

        No hit for me.

I don't no about Gyan/Wellbeck anymore, I have Wellbeck and will keep him for a while but their on a horrid run and don't really have a lot to play for, form is important this time of year as well.

I'd maybe take a punt on Ebanks-Blake, DJ, Odem, Ba etc.

I know theirs some bad fixtures in their for them but that's a good mix of form players and main strikers for teams with a lot to play for.
