[sbu_large_image] Scout Picks

No Wayne Rooney. Carlos Tevez off form and at Anfield. Rotation looming amongst the Chelsea, Tottenham, United and Arsenal lineups. Nobody said it was going to be easy.

At this stage in the game, mini-league leaders are looking for security and stability; the rest of us inspiration and the forlorn hope that a differential could come good and help bridge the gap. Gameweek thirty-two could be a key one with the destination of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) armband looking particularly vital.

The Scout Picks have been in patchy form of late. Some consistently strong selections at the back have come up trumps, but that’s been balanced by some disappointing showings from the likes of Samir Nasri, Ashley Young and Rafael Van der Vaart in attacking roles. Two of that trio remain in this week’s selection – blind faith perhaps, and certainly selections made in hope that class will out eventually.

The Defence

Once again the defence is as mix of the strongest clean sheet prospects available, coupled with defenders who offer a clear attacking threat from open play or set-pieces.

Heurelho Gomes in goal and David Luiz in front of him, cover the Chelsea and Tottenham rearguards who, against Wigan and Stoke respectively, appear to have home matches that present the best opportunities for shut-outs. They’re joined in the Scout Picks defence by Blackburn’s Chris Samba, Bolton’s Gary Cahill and Villa’s Kyle Walker – all of whom provide an attacking threat to counter any chance that they will concede in their home matches against Birmingham, West Ham and Newcastle.

Beyond these five there are further options that present themselves. The United back four is hard to predict given injuries and the temptation to rotate ahead of the second leg of the Champions League with Chelsea – Chris Smalling could start alongside Nemanja Vidic and would offer strong value against the Cottagers as a result. Then there’s always Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman (if fit) of Everton – they travel to Wolves and, whilst they will struggle to keep their sheet clean, both carry their usual attacking potential.

The Midfield

Frank Lampard’s selection in midfield has been nailed-on all week, despite a muted performance in the 1-0 defeat to United in the midweek European tie. Lampard remains integral to Chelsea’s set-pieces, will be on spot-kicks and will be expected to contribute his usual smattering of goal attempts when the obliging Wigan defence par up this weekend.

Alongside the Chelsea man, Villa’s Ashley Young and Tottenham’s Rafael Van der Vaart are given opportunities to prove their Fantasy worth. Both have strong home fixtures and, like Lampard, are central on set-pieces and should also be on penalties. There are further options here, with Stewart Downing in particular, offering a cheaper and arguably more consistent alternative to Young,.

I’ve handed the final midfield slot to the in-form Wovles flyer Matt Jarvis. The newly capped England winger will be under the microscope ahead of the Summer transfer circus and, against Everton, will be looking to demonstrate his worth. Wolves seem likely to breach the Toffees back four and Jarvis, with his darting runs and regular supply from the wings, will be a major weapon in Mick McCarthy’s armoury.

While I’ve ignored the Arsenal midfield, there’s no doubting that the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Andrey Arshavin and Theo Walcott (if fit), could all emerge from the gameweek with handsome profits from the trip to Bloomfield Road. Then of course, there’s Charlie Adam in opposition – can he stand out against the rich array of talent in Arsenal’s midfield? It will be the ultimate test of his ability to dominate a game.

There could be potential in Chelsea’s Salomon Kalou if he is handed the start up front by Carlo Ancelotti against Wigan. United’s Nani and Dirk Kuyt of Liverpool also promise returns – Nani should earn a start having been benched in the last two, while Kuyt will remain on spot-kicks and will be looking to benefit from Andy Carroll’s knockdowns and the trickery of Luis Suarez.

The Forwards

I’ve covered the Arsenal attacking potential with the almost inevitable selection of Robin Van Persie. I’ve partnered him with a more risky selection however, opting for Bolton’s Daniel Sturridge over more obvious and illustrious names. The Chelsea loanee is a consistent threat for the Trotters and should find some joy from the West Ham defence.

Options elsewhere include Sunderland’s pairing of Asamoah Gyan and Danny Welbeck against West Brom, while Darren Bent looks strong with Newcastle in opposition. With Young in my midfield however, backing Bent looks overkill for a Villa side that are still lacking confidence following a hideous run of results. Blackburn’s Junior Hoilett gets my bench role – Big Dunc will bring you more on him and Daniel Sturrridge, along with some other left field picks in this week’s “Spot the Differentials” to come.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Would make my team:

    Foster
    Luiz Coleman/RJ Dawson
    Nani Nasri Lampard VDV Young
    RVP Sturidge

Get adam back in for VDV next week then?

I went for Drogba, if he plays he scores the form he is in. Wigan sucks. If Drogba is a sub I would still expect him to come on and do something.

    Evening all

    thinking of doing either
    a) Tevez + Rooney + Barton out for Bent + Hoilett + Lampard (8 point hit)
    or
    b) Rooney + VDV/Nasri out for Lampard + Bent (4 point hit)

Was leaning towards b) to avoid an 8 pointer, but then VDV and Nasri both got the love from the scout/Total FPL picks so now I'm not sure. Please help!

The double GW's what's holding me back too. On present form, that's probably 4pts to VDV's 2, however.

Arsenal have 2 home games in the next 6, one of which is United, versus Spurs' 4 home games in the next 6. Plus VDV gets to take penalties. That's what's swaying me in his favour.

looking to bin Silva this week (capitalise on getting decent cash for him while his stock is high and also he has no game next week).

Naturally i am looking to bring in a chelsea player to cover the double game week.

cant afford Lampard - have to look at the rest for the best option.

thinking Malouda. i know he was left out midweek for Zhirkov (who made no impact).

any chelsea fans who know if he will be preferred at the weekend?

7 GWs in a row for Malouda without getting decent points and doesn't seem nailed on to play this week and both games in the double. I wouldn't bother. Can understand why you would consider him though, hard to know who to pick for Chelsea but given there fixtures it would be good to pick someone

Hernandez would have to score 2 goals or earn bonus to pay you back.

United have scored more than 2 goals without Rooney just once in the league this season - at Everton in the 3-3. Fulham are currently one of the best defences in the league - only 3 teams (Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool) have conceded fewer in the last 8 games.

Hernandez is quality and a good buy, but not sure I'd take a 4 point hit for him this week.

Want Lampard but at the same time realize my defence needs work and if i get Lamps i have to get cheap striker which leaves me with two cheap strikers.

Lampard, with the 3 games vs Rooney's 1 over the next 3 GW's should outscore Rooney. I'd be strongly tempted to shift out Rooney and Bentley then but, you're right, your defence is in tatters.Bentley won't start this weekend though so down to 10 men anyway - might as well get rid and at least have the chance of 11 if Coleman starts.

If I was the manager, I'd be happier with Essien cos I think he's the better player (and fantasy prospect) but Ancelotti seems to like Ramires.
I actually think there's a small chance Mikel might play, with Ancelotti keeping one eye on Tuesday's game. In which case, Ramires would be the most likely to be rested, I think.

You have Charlie Adam? In that case you're in luck (sort of), I did a post on cheap combinations t'other day. here is the pertinent part
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake & Charlie Adam (total cost 10.8)
SEB Pro’s – Was extremely effective and played well against Newcastle. He took 5 shots scoring one goal and worked the channels very well. I think if he wasn’t on a losing side he would have been in with a shout of bonus points.
SEB Con’s – Mick McCarthy needs to consider whether to stick with SEB or give Fletcher a go (who played well when he came on). I believe he has said this week that he is considering a 4-4-2 switch, I don’t think playing up with a striking partner would unduly effect SEB’s style of play.

Charlie Adam Pros – You know them, he is a beast
Charlie Adam Cons – Every man and his dog will own him for their run of home fixtures.
See the attached heatmaps of those two

the problem is if i get Lumpard i will only have 4.5 so i am delving deep into the bargain bin.....it was gonna be Welbeck or SEB but Saha dropping in price has ballsed that plan up.

Thinking of sticking Kolarov and tevez on the bench during their blank week. Might turn out to be differentials in the run in if people get rid now...! But is Coleman a rotation risk, or just injured?

Every chance. Ancelotti seems unlikely to risk Ivanovic because Luiz is not available for second leg at Old Trafford and therefore Ivanovic is needed. Unless he gambles on Alex vs United - unlikely.

Does nobody think that Lampard might be rested? Easy fixture (agg. score of 14-0 in last two meetings), old age (he is well into his thirties), fatigue (played 2 games in last week following internationals) and a CL QF 2nd leg with Utd coming up in a few days, seems like a good time to have a rest. With benayoun coming back and all that he might well be benched

    Hey guys,

Could really use some help this week. I have two injured players (Coleman and Zigic) and Rooney who's obviously suspended. I do have two free transfers this week, so if I was to make three transfers this week, it would only be a 4pt hit.

    My team is:

    Foster, Begovic
Baines, Walker, Coleman, Kolarov, R Johnson
A Young, VDV, Nani, Nasri, Adam
    Van Persie, Rooney, Zigic

I have 1.6 in the bank and two free transfers. Any help is majorly appreciated!

Was thinking of doing Rooney and Kolarov OUT, Welbeck and Luiz in. That would cover my two free transfers, then is there any other changes you'd recommend, as it would only cost a 4pt hit.

You can play Samba instead of RJohnson this week, then out of the rest of your squad only Barton & Rooney don't look promising. So I'd definitely sell Rooney for someone like Bent and think of possible alternatives for Barton. Newcastle's fixtures don't look good in the long-term, so it's probably a good time to ditch him. It's also necessary to compare your team to your opponent's team to decide who you should eventually get.
