Arsenal miss chances aplenty but still enjoy their day to the seaside, putting three past Blackpool to move seven points off the top with a game in hand. Near the bottom, Aston Villa record a crucial victory in a weekend that saw Gerard Houllier’s side become the only club in the lower half of the table to pick up all three points….Here’s the notes from yesterday afternoon.

Gunners Keep Up the Chase
With the concise passing of Cesc Fabregas cutting apart Blackpool’s flimsy offside trap time and again, Arsenal were granted numerous opportunities to find the net in their visit to Bloomfield Road and it’s indicative of their recent wastefulness that Richard Kingson was beaten on just three occasions. Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie, in particular, should have put the game beyond their hosts in a manner far more emphatic than the 3-1 scoreline suggests. Van Persie, nevertheless, did notch a goal, an assist and was subsequently awarded the 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points.

The win takes Arsenal’s unbeaten league run to fourteen games and adds extra impetus to their upcoming double gameweek (LIV & tot), where investment in their players will undoubtedly be high, despite a tricky pair of games.

Jens Between the Sticks
A pre-match knee injury to Manuel Almunia gave Jens Lehmann the chance to make a return to the Arsenal first team and the German came up with one or two crucial saves to maintain the Gunners lead at times. After the game, Arsene Wenger admitted he is unsure whether Almunia will be ready for next Sunday Emirates showdown with Liverpool. Wojciech Szczesny was also described as being “not far away” from his return.

Theo Theory
Wenger clearly has a selection headache with Nasri, Andrey Arshavin and Theo Walcott all vying for roles on the flank in Arsenal’s midfield. Nasri looks his preferred option with Arshavin and Walcott seemingly set to rotate. It was the latter on the bench at Blackpool but he saw action on the hour-mark and provided the pass for Van Persie’s simple third goal. Walcott would now seem well placed to start the Emirates clash with Liverpool on Sunday – if he can impress in that one, he could also seal his starting role for Arsenal’s second fixture of the gameweek at Spurs. Walcott looks a double gameweek gamble then but, at 6.9 in the FPL, one that some may opt to take.

Blackpool Slump Again
The home defeat means Ian Holloway’s side have picked up five points from their last twelve games and the only real positive for Blackpool this weekend is that all the teams below them lost, too. Olly will need all his powers of motivation to rally the troops, with the Seasiders now facing a critical run of three home games in succession (WIG, NEW, STK) which may just determine their chances of survival. At least DJ Campbell has served his suspension and got some game time under his belt yesterday ahead of next weekend’s vital match against Roberto Martinez’s bottom of the table Latics.

Villa Change Tactics
Gerard Houllier switched systems for the home game with Newcastle, reverting to a 4-4-2 that saw Gabby Agbonlahor join Darren Bent up front. Ashley Young, having had a free role behind Bent of late, moved back to the left wing, though swapped flanks with Stewart Downing throughout the game. This allowed Stilian Petrov to join Jean Makoun in the centre of midfield, giving the home side a more robust edge in the middle.

Villa have been defensively poor this season and this was their first clean sheet in ten games and only their second since gameweek ten. The 1-0 win should boost their confidence ahead of a decent run of fixtures that reads (whm, STK, wba, WIG).

Darren Bent
Owners of the forward can count themselves unlucky, as Bent was on the wrong side of two contentious decisions that, on another day, could have seen him walk away with a decent Fantasy haul. The January signing found the net at the tail end of the first half only for it to be harshly ruled out for offside then, in the second forty-five, was fouled inside the Newcastle box and could easily have won a penalty for his side. Rather than returning two goals or one goal and an assist, he finished the match with nothing to show for his efforts and picked up just 2 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points instead.

Pardew Counts The Cost of Absentees
Alan Pardew already had to do without both Kevin Nolan and Cheik Tiote for the trip to Villa Park due to suspension, but the Newcastle boss also had to rule Shola Ameobi out of the proceedings with inflammation of the knee, an injury the forward picked up on Saturday. Speaking after the game, though, Pardew is keeping his fingers crossed the situation isn’t serious. Such was the visitors lack of options, Fabrizio Colocinni played in centre midfield in the 1-0 defeat, though Jose Enrique did return to bolster the back-four.

Pardew fielded a 4-4-2 formation with the unfamiliar partnership of Nile Ranger and Peter Lovenkrands leading the line, though the pair rarely threatened their hosts. St James’ Park may have seen plenty of goals for the home side over the course of this season, but this game was the fourth in the last five away from home that Newcastle have failed to find the net. A home game with Man United is up next, followed by a trip to Blackpool and a chance to address this toothless form on the road.

imho lampard isn't the right route into chelsea attacking returns. malouda will give you an extra few million to upgrade meireles or huth/simpson.

front line looks good, but you're not taking too much advantage of the dgws coming up.

      Overall I would stick.
Foster better then Robinson, but keep both.
Def okay so long as you want to keep Simpson as cheap sub, other 4 will return pts.
Mid strong enough - possibly too strong and could get rid of Miereles to afford stronger Fwd than Welbeck, but I wouldn't bother.

Depends on mancini's setup I think. If he goes out with the same lineup as he went against Sunderland, which he should, he (rival) could win. If he goes to anfield with the 451 0-0 draw machine, you should win it.

I literally have no idea what to do this gameweek...After Chelsea's abysmal performance against Wigan, not sure anything other than a defender is a good idea.

This alongside with Wenger and Ancelotti's incessant rotation has left me very frustrated this week, ARGH.

Loving this run in - many of the big players are either being rotated or have lost form. People have to make changes - gives a glimmer of hope for those chasing their rivals in the minileague.
I'm getting rid of VDV for Adam, and Coleman goes for Ashley Cole -

    Luiz Cole Ridgewell

If I do those two transfers I have absolutely no change, so may take a gamble. Brought Lampard in early last week and got away with it.

With the way people have been seemingly randomly falling in price (Coleman could well be transferred out by a few) I may have to do it early if I want it done.

I think lately once they pass 50% they are likely to drop. Might wait for the game to finish as if the worst comes to the worst and prices change then I can always get John Terry instead. Not quite as good but not horrendous either. That could free up a little cash for strengthening elsewhere too.

As far as it looks at the mo I'd say the essentials for this coming double are
    1. A chelsea defender (or two)
    2. Foster - or Cech if rich
    3. Lamps
    4. RVP

Any others are trimmings....nice to have but I wouldn't go mental apesh!t with pts hits to get carr in or drpgba for example.

I can't, not brave enough. There were a few very highly rankers on earlier suggesting they will even captain Frank. All it takes is a penalty, a little pass into Drogba and a scramble over the line and you are looking at 30 plus pts if he's your captain. Not taking any risks with Frank in a chelsea double. He really doesn't need to play well to score well in FPL.

You must remeber that we will have a player in lieu of him (for me Malouda probably) and also a captain of our own (Drogba or Malouda probably). The risk is offset by this and the reward is that it could be a decisive differential.

good argument...Malouda and Drogba I prefer as players at the moment, but their rotation risk puts me off, hence opting for Lamps. Such risks are why you are both so high.

I think rank does matter to some extent. If someone in the top 500 says something I don't follow it blindly but I take notice and it is usually followed by sound argument.

Didn't like A.Young's performance yesterday, Newcastle were awful aswell. Thinking of doing:

    A-Young -> Cleverley
    Hernandez -> Rooney/Drogba/Torres or Coleman -> A.Cole.

Aye I've been thinking about brining in NZogbia or Cleverley instead of Walcott this week because it would make more sense long-term. Blackpool can't defend for shit as you say and after that it's Sunderland away.

    Re: The whole Lampard debate.

No one is saying Lamps is a must have this gameweek. However he's on set pieces, penalties, is rotation risk free and still catches the bonus point judges eyes. And he has the fixtures with the best potential this double for a big individual score.

However, if funds are a problem then Fabs will be a good choice for MF too.

Its hard to recommend going into this dgw without Lamps in the same way as it would be hard to go into a Man Utd double recommending that you not have Rooney, but, if you do, then I think you need to make sure you have Fabs not Malouda as your differential.

Fabs will at least hog the baps and play 180 mins. Malouda is a rotation risk.

Good luck whatever you choose. I've got Lamps but may add Fabs just to be extra greedy!!!!

Sorry but Arsenal are at home to Liverpool and away to Spurs. If they were to lose both it wouldn't shock me. Chelsea on the other hand are away to West Brom and at home to Birmingham. That could be an aggerate score of 8-0. Malouda > Lampard imo.

Only a hard-core Chelsea fan could be that biased, Chelsea have been terrible as of late and they will probably prove it again at the OT.

PS. If I had to support a team I'd probably support Chelsea because almost everyone I know supports Utd. That doesn't make me blind from the facts though.

Malouda may not play both games. In his last 8 GW's he's scored 24 points. Over the same period Lamps has scored 52 pts.

Yes, it is a fair point. I guess I have some gamble left in me. My major concern is that I'll end up spending 8 -12 points getting Frank in and the subsequent adjustments that will be necessary to balance my team. Just not worth it for me personally.

What do you reckon to these transfers for this week?

    VDV - Adam
    Kolarov - A Cole

    Gives me:

    Foster
Luiz Cole Djourou/Coleman (hopefully one will play)
    Lampard Nani Nasri Adam Young
    RVP Zigic (Sturridge)

    Other options would be:

Coleman out for Birm def (but not sure I want to double up on their defence and would need to get rid after. Also Coleman might play?)

Zigic - DJ/Welbeck/someone else who might actually play. Thing is Zamora will be coming into this spot the week after anyway, so bit of a waste.

    Team is:

    Begovic Hennessey
    Luiz Smalling Coleman Walker Carr
    Nasri Nani Hitzlsperger Adam Walcott
    RVP Rooney Torres

Can't afford straight swap Begovic > Foster so thinking

Coleman > Shawcross/Salcido to fund it. No fixture this week but decent double next week. Seem like a decent shout?

So if Jens Lehmann had of been sent off yesterday, which looked likely in the build-up to the Blackpool goal, RVP would have went into goals for the gunners.

That would have been funny. He could have got a couple of save points or saved a penalty.

If he had gone in goal for 60+ minutes, would he have got clean sheet points too? Assuming he kept a cleanie, etc etc.

AND if he had gone in goal and then scored a penalty, would he have received goalkeeper scoring points rather than striker poitns?

But he'd get saves points, so you'd assume he'd get clean sheet points. Different case to someone going in goal, rather than just shuffling about the pitch.

Was being a bit facetious about the second question though, that would require reprogramming of the software. But all players have clean sheet and saves columns on their pages.
