Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to field a 4-3-3 at home to Fulham came as a shock to many last weekend, given that Wayne Rooney’s suspension looked like offering Dimitar Berbatov the chance to partner Javier Hernandez up front for the league leaders. With the upcoming Champions League Quarter Final second leg against Chelsea undoubtedly in mind, Fergie instead opted to leave Little Pea out altogether, much to the chagrin of the 42,000 Fantasy Managers who drafted the Mexican in on the back of Rooney’s missing gameweek.

The Bulgarian was flanked by Nani and Antonio Valencia, with this match only the third time (GW1, 30 & 32) both wingers have started in the league together this term, a result of Valencia’s injury lay-off. Here’s a look at a game that saw United record a league win for the twelfth time in succession at Old Trafford:

Width
So how did the wingers fare in a different system? A look at these Average Position maps taken from the GW30 Bolton game (where United played 4-4-2) and the Fulham match highlights not so much the extra width the formation afforded the team last Saturday, but how seldom, in comparison, United really used the flanks in their match against the Trotters.

Against Bolton (left) both Valencia (25) and Nani (17) played too centrally, with Nani’s role, in particular, resembling that of a second striker, given how deep Wayne Rooney (10) played.

Against Fulham (right) the map looks more appropriate for each player’s position. Playing as an inside-out winger on the left means Nani will always have a tendency to drift inside but there’s a far better balance here. Valencia’s positioning also looks far more like that of a conventional right-winger. There’s also a definite similarity between Anderson (8) and Rooney’s role in the Bolton game, but without the congestion in the middle.

Passing
In the Bolton game, both Nani and Valencia made more passes to Wayne Rooney than they did to any other United player, on 14 and 8 occasions respectively. A result of their positioning or of “The Big Man” dropping deep for the ball and pulling rank? Hard to be definitive, really, but it’s interesting that, against Fulham, Valencia Top-Passed (8 times) to both Anderson and John O’Shea, while Nani made the same number of Passes to Patrice Evra (7 times) as he did to Anderson, confirmation of the fact that the pair linked with their full-backs as much as their attack-minded team mates, another example of United finding a better balance.

With more space and perhaps more scope to influence the game, it’s also worth noting that between them, Nani and Valencia made 9 Successful Dribbles against Fulham (five and four, respectively) but made just 3 against Fulham (three and zero).

These Passing Heat Maps taken from the two games illustrate this:

The percentages out wide in the middle third of the pitch are revealing. Against Bolton, United used this area of the left flank for 9% (4 +5) of all passes and the right flank for 12% (7 + 5) of all passes. Saturday saw a big leap, with 13% on the left (7 + 6) and 17% on the right (9 + 8). United made virtually the same number of passes in both games (520 against Bolton, 529 against Fulham) but significantly increased their passing in these areas from 21% to 30%.

No doubt that Fergie will move back to 4-4-2 when it matters most, with Rooney offering more attacking intent than Anderson and Hernandez’s movement far superior to that of the less industrious Berbatov. As an exercise in testing out his options, however, Saturday certainly reminded Fergie there’s plenty of positive alternatives available for those occasions in the season where he has to do without the services of Rooney, for whatever reason that may be.

Guys this is my current team, need some advice for potential transfers:

    Foster Al-Habsi
    Luiz Coleman Vidic Walker Kelly
    Adam Nani VDV Fabregas Barton
    RVP Odemwingie Tevez

    0.7M in the bank

I want to add Lampard to my ranks for the Double Gameweek but what does everyone think is the best option:

    1) Barton and Tevez to Lampard and Hoilett

    or

    2) VDV and Vidic to Lampard and Djourou (providing he returns fit)

    or

    3) Only other options I can think of that don’t involve Lampard and not involve a hit may be bringing in another Chelsea defender in for Vidic or bringing in Torres or Drogba for Tevez??

I'm thinking next season, anytime a player hits the post I'm going to add 2 points to his score. Also if he has a good goal disallowed I'll make a note of it... These updated scores should be a truer reflection of what that player is worth in fantasy football terms... So I can spot bargains.

Or is that just mental?! Haha

Yeah true, but I find it hard to use the stats to compare players in terms of their fantasy football value so I might try factoring it into their 'scores'

This approach will probably last about 4 minutes until I find it far to tedious

Why you shipping Downing? He's got a good run in and has been pretty solid.

I wouldn't bring in Walcott for him tbh. Walcott is an injury risk, a rotation risk and apart from the double has a really crap set of fixtures.

Kelly out for sure. Not sure who for though as you have the doubles quite well represented. Maybe Huth in prep for their double next week? Or Bardsley?

Don't know for sure, but here are some stats about low odds draws in Serie B

In the last 5 season(current season included) there were 54 games with odds on the draw lower than 2.30

23 of them had odds lower than 2.00 and 16 of them confirmed the draw.

31 of them had odds between 2.00 and 2.30 but only 9 of them ended draws.

    My team is:

    Foster*,
    Carr*, Coleman, Luiz*
Adam, Nani, Nasri*, van Der Vaart, A.Young
    RVP* (C), Carroll

    Begovic, Tevez, Huth, Smalling

    3.1 in bank

Got five doublers at the mo. Do I get in another Arsenal player or
    two more Chelsea players?

VDV + Tevez out - Malouda + Drogba
    VDV + Tevez + Huth out - Foley + Cesc + Drogba

Cant afford the Luiz + Lamps + Drogba combo

    Thoughts lads...

    Cheers

I know its old news now, but Nani not getting nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award is a disgrace.

He's had a better season than Bale, Parker, Nasri and VDV in my opinion. the statistics prove it too.

He should at least in the young player award.

              Jamsiep earlier today:

"Favouring the former, despite already having Luiz. I think that I’d want VDV back in a couple of weeks anyway for there double, and with him presumably still being on set pieces, I can’t see him continuing this poor scoring form."

      Agreed Burly.

To make it worse he won't win the young player award though either. It will probably be Wilshere.

It's a darn shame as he has been excellent this season. It's the same people who have been saying United are below par this season who have overlooked him for the award. Some people really do believe everything they read in the redtops.

Why do people think the PFA is in anyway objective? It's at least 50% popularity contest - a diving scut like Nani will hardly garner much votes amongst his fellow professionals.
He might win the writers award

We need to trick AP into saying that the PFA awards are an absolute joke, in the light of this Nani farce.

Not sure if you were around here at the time, but towards the end of last season there were some raging debates around Rooney (some things never change, eh?!) and whether or not he deserved the PFA award over Drogba. AP's standard post was alongside the lines of 'I think I'll trust the judgement of hundreds of fellow professionals, over some Chelsea/Arsenal fans on the internet'.

Haha wasn't around then, I'm a newbie for this season. The reason Partridge will hold fire on the PFA Awards is Vidic being nominated (he is isn't he?) if Vidic doesnt get it then you'll get the desired post 🙂

          Yes I live in Sweden.

No I don't talk about it much because as you say I don't think many would be interested. I take note of what's happening here but I follow other leagues much more.

Swedish club football is in the worst state it has ever bee. In the 90s our best clubs regularly reached the CL groupstage and even playoffs quite often, and we had UEFA cup winners etc before that but now we can't even get to the final round of qualifying for the CL.

I think Sweden produce a decent amount of quality players for our population but our league is pathetic.

Quite possibly. If he is purely WUM'ing then he is remarkably consistent. Someone like Titisiep often posts reasonably intelligent stuff that makes his WUM attempts fairly obvious, Jas is sort of the polar opposite.

Walcott is properly tempting, coz I'll still have my 2 frees next week so it's like a risk free gamble! Or as thespecialone said I could just get a player in for gw34 this week.

Keep Foster as although Chelsea have the better fixtures, Foster will get save points and you are spreading the risk as you already have Luiz.

Your team looks good going into the week and I know it sounds like a waste of a transfer but seeing as you have two free I would sub one of your bench for a player from one of the DGW34 teams such as Huth, Hangeland, Sturridge, Dempsey or Zamora.

Posted this in the previous thread, but didn't realise we'd moved over here so I'll post it again.

Just had a look at some potential transfers and Lampard is low down on the second page of both overall and form listings. Had to go to the fourth page to find him under Value/Form. ’nuff said.

Drogba and Malouda are both third overall in their position and both on the first form page. Both have played all 90 minutes of the last 2 league games. Malouda is unlikely to play midweek, and Drogba will probably be subbed, wheras Lampard will be tired from 90 minutes.

I can’t see how anyone would go for Fat Frank over these two. The only tough call now is choising between them

now that is a good argument well made.

My argument for frank is that he is a jammy so and so and on penalties. he can get you 15 pts at the drop of a (p)hat through picking up a loose ball outside the area and by Drogba tumbling in the box.

Havind said that I'm not captaining him...that honour goes to RVP...his form is electric gold.

Drogba is on all other set pieces though don't forget. Plus Lampard hasn't really been getting near the box half as much this season. Knowing his luck he'll only go an miss a penalty too.

I think I'm going with RVP there too. If he had been fit all season I think we'd be talking about a Ronaldo-esque season from him. He's got over 100pts in just over 3 months, imagine even half that rate of return for the whole season. Incredible effort from him, wouldn't surpise me if he stated above 12mil next year.

RVP is worth 12m...the good thing about him is actually the injuries. Get him in...watch his price rise, get injured after two months, sell him for a profit...wait a couple of months...get him in again for cut price 11.5 and watch the process start again.

Don't forget Hitler's interference with battle orders, poor management of the Luftwaffe by the fat opium addict, poor selection of allies by the Germans (Romania, Hungary and Italy didn't really match Britain, America and Russia).
The German sacrifice of the whole of their 6th Army at Stalingrad causing their first big defeat.
Thats just the tip of the iceberg of the western theatre - don't forget the African campaign and of course the war in the east between Imperial Japan and everyone else. That started in 1936.

Because the US saw opportunity to make loads of profits by participating in the war on the Allies side. That's why the allies won. There's not profit to be made out of peace. So basically the great depression was the reason behind the allies winning 😛

Yeah in a way, America was the only country to massively profit from the war at relatively small expense. The Russians gained a lot of power too but at the loss of about 25-30 million lives.

It depresses me that, despite having studied WWII and Nazi Germany for about three years, I wouldn't have a clue what to write if asked to produce an essay on that.

Very interested in it, both my Grandads were involved - one was at Dunkirk and D-Day the other was in Burma fighting the Japanese. Used to tell me mad stories about it.

Thanks for the replies. Probably will be Nasri and Gyan in GW34. 6 Doubles for GW33 and 4 for GW34 is pretty good without a point hit.

And that would give me 4.5 in the bank for a future upgrade of VdV. Will have to keep an eye out on Man City player(s) for their double in GW36.
