Fernando Torres continues his Sutton-esque form for Chelsea as the Londoners are sent packing in the all-English quarter final. Carlo Ancelotti tries that old 4-3-2-1 favourite but finds his Christmas tree-shaped plans are out of season. Man United continue their push for the treble by recording their seventh straight win in all competitions, as Ryan Giggs provides the creative spark to propel Fergie’s side into the last four. Here’s the notes from last night’s Champions League heavyweight showdown…

The Other Brazilian Centre-Back
Since signing on the dotted line at Stamford Bridge back in January, David Luiz has caught the eye of Fantasy Managers far and wide with goals, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points, clean sheets and the added guarantee of being ineligible for European competitions. Now Chelsea are out of Europe and their squad is burgeoning just that little bit more – particularly at the back. Having been injured since late November, Alex returned to the starting line-up against United and while he neither shone or prove a liability last night, his return adds the further chance of rotation to the Blues back-four.

With Chelsea having just seven Premier League games remaining this season and four registered centre-backs (Luiz, Alex, Ivanovic and Terry) as well as three viable right-backs (Bosingwa, Ivanovic and Ferreira) is anyone besides Ashley Cole now safe from rotation?

Ramires Shows His Hand
Another Brazilian decided to play to type yesterday evening when Ramires (the bookies favourites for a yellow card pre-game) decided to go the whole hog and pick up not one but a matching pair of yellows. Chelsea were resultantly left with an even greater uphill task, having only 10 men for the final 20 minutes of the match. Anyone looking for a wild gamble on Ramires ahead of Chelsea’s double header can be assured that his suspension does not cross over to the Premier League. Ancelotti however, may well be questioning Ramires’ big game temperament given his double booking last night.

693 Minutes and Counting…
As this site rather happily points out, Fernando Torres still hasn’t been able to notch his first goal for Chelsea. Being substituted at half-time for Didier Drogba will likely only dent the Spaniard’s confidence and pretty much sums up his display in the first forty-five. Given that he has a weighty Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price-tag of 11.5, even ahead of a promising double-gameweek, there looks to be better options elsewhere.

Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree
Carlo Ancelotti did at least appear to try and work to Torres’ strengths with last night’s formation. As pointed out by The Guardian’s own Sir Paulos, Jonathan Wilson, just 24 hours ago, the 4-4-2 of late doesn’t help El Nino’s cause. By reverting to a 4-3-2-1 christmas tree formation, one that he used reliably at AC Milan, the man in charge appears to have acknowledged that Torres requires improved service. The change failed to help matters, as neither Nicolas Anelka nor Frank Lampard offered the creative bridge between the midfield and strikeforce required to feed Torres on the night.

Frank Lampard: Anonymous and Expensive
Chelsea’s Mr. Reliable didn’t have a bad game, but he certainly didn’t have a good one either – but we can confirm he was on the pitch. The average position of the 20 goal a season man perhaps provides solace in the fact he was given a greater influence further up the field than in recent weeks, but apart from Chelsea’s only shot on target of the first-half, his contributions weren’t significant when assessing Chelsea’s display.

Drogba Puts His Case Forward
The Ivorian striker is by no means on fire right now, but, then again, few are in the Chelsea squad at present. Drogba’s half-time introduction certainly reinvigorated the Chelsea attack and his direct approach ultimately brought reward, even if the satisfaction of his equaliser diminished quickly. Drogba might not be Chelsea’s most in-form striker right now -that honour is reserved for Danny Sturridge on loan at Bolton- but with 2 goals in his last 3 games he’s certainly worthy of consideration over Torres.

Berbatov Benched Again
A goal in Saturday’s home win over Fulham was not enough to maintain his place in the United starting line-up, as Dimitar Berbatov returned to bench-warming duties again last night. Having served one game of his two-match domestic ban, Wayne Rooney returned to the first XI, as did Javier Hernandez, with Fergie reverting back to 4-4-2, following the weekend 4-3-3. Little Pea continued his fantastic debut season with a crucial opener on the verge of half-time, further making a mockery of the minimal £6m United paid for his services last summer.

Valencia Gets a Rest and Some Praise From the Boss
With United still in the hunt for a possible treble, rotation will surely continue to be an issue over the next few weeks. Having just returned from long-term injury, Antonio Valencia has been in fantastic form of late but perhaps with the club’s packed schedule in mind, the right winger found himself joining Berbatov on the bench last night. The United boss found time to praise Valencia prior to the match:

“We expected Antonio to come back like this. He is an outstanding footballer, who is very capable of being a threat. His understanding of the game is terrific. He has a great tactical brain. The boy has everything, balance, power and speed. When we got nearer the time, we couldn’t get him back quickly enough. We arranged closed-doors games to get his tempo and rhythm back.”

Ji Sung-Park started instead on the right and vindicated his selection with a busy performance and the goal that effectively killed off Chelsea’s hopes of a revival, literally seconds after Drogba had given the ten-man visitors a lifeline.

Giggs Tore Them Apart, Again
Playing in central midfield, Ryan Giggs showed real class with two sublime assists that cut through the dogged Chelsea resistance. The Welshman has now assisted United’s last four goals in the competition and, with such a vital contribution on this European run, no one would blame Fergie if he was rested for this upcoming weekend for United’s trip to Wembley and preserved purely for the semi-final, which will surely be against Schalke.

United Defence
John O’Shea got the nod over Wes Brown at right-back, with Rafael not 100% ready for selection. Rio Ferdinand started alongside Nemanja Vidic and within ten minutes it seemed like the ex-England captain would have to depart the proceedings, but the injury worry subsided and Ferdinand saw the 90 minutes out without any further complications. The Drogba goal was only the third United have conceded in the Champions League all season, in a run that has saw them chalk up seven clean sheets along the way.

Fergie Delighted with Form
There was no hiding his pride after the 3-1 aggregate win saw United reach the semi-finals yet again under Sir Alex Ferguson. With the afore-mentioned treble still very much on the cards, the United boss beamed post-match:

“I think we’ve hit our form. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. It’s a great moment for us and I think the players are enjoying it. They’re relishing the challenges they’ve got now. I think you saw that tonight…Momentum is a great thing. The bonus I’ve got is that all my players are getting fit again now and that’s a great boost for us.”

With Man City still licking their wounds from Monday night’s Anfield hammering and more than likely to be without the talents of Carlos Tevez, Fergie will be looking forward to this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final against the “noisy neighbours” with a certain wicked relish.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Medium based transfer but i might not need to play him. Ill play the following. I know Coleman is a risk as well so im struggling, i just really want to make room for Lamps this DGW.

        Foster
        Luiz/Smalling/Coleman
        Adam/VDV/Nasri/Nani/Lamp
        Drog/RVP

My team is pretty much similar and I'm thinking to do the same transfers, Hoilett should play this weekend but I think for the next two gameweeks he will be a sub because you would obviously play the other 7 over him never mind who has a double gameweek or whatever.

I wouldn't worry about Coleman, look out for Djourou's injury news because he looks set to play this weekend, so if you worried about Coleman or Smalling just play Djourou. Who's you yout fifth defender you seem t have put Barton down?

How can I best bring in Lampard with 2 free transfers this week and 1.6 in the bank. I reckon

    1. A Young to Lampard
    2. Nasri to Wilshere

    Foster (Freidel)
    Luiz, Distin, Bardsley (Hughes, Djourou)
A Young, Nani, Larsson, Adam, Nasri
    RVP, Torres (Zigic)

Oh and yes I wish to keep Torres for at least this GW!

You've got 2 big problems there. Fab who isn't getting the points we expect. But it's not worth getting rid as he has a double gameweek. Also Berbatov, who may or may not start against newcastle. Probably worth holding onto both for this week, and then get rid of fab next gw and berbatov the gw after.

Coleman also needs to go, not least because you have distin aswell.

Silva aswell, as he hasn't got a game this week. Albrighton not been playing for villa either. Get some birmingham cover in defence. What is zabaleta doing in your team?

His protection hasn't ended yet yanky. The way i was pretty sure was that, as normally when people go over 100% they rise, and the fact that adam hadn't rose for a couple of days when he WAS over 100%, led me to conclude that he's price protected. All players who are protected are so, for a period of time, and when that period ends, their price gets reset to zero, and they don't rise.

However there are some exceptions to this rule, as we've seen over this season so far.

Crazy or genius to get rid of Nani for this week. Either that or Nasri but is that also crazy, basically a like for like swap since I want Walcott.

Other midfielders are, Lampard, Adam, A Young.

Nasri aint scored/assisted in something like 7 games now and Walcott is likely to play a bigger part in the action IMO. Think I'd also rather Valencia for the run in. Walcott and Valencia could be THE differential but then it could ruin my entire season which aint exactly great in the first place!

Only because his starting position was an advanced one, it doesn't mean that he played well.

Playing in behind the forward, as he essentially was, with his back to goal doesn't suit him at all. His feet aren't nearly quick enough to be able to deal with the pressure on him when we get into the positions around the box, as shown yesterday by multiple miscontrols in advanced positions.

        LAMPARD 😉

Just wondered if people would still have him for a Chelsea double - given his price - if he was not on pens? Or is the main reason for the Lampard love is that out of all the other Chelsea midfielders, Lamps is most likely to play the full 90 mins?

I think the main reason is the security; no other attacking player is GUARANTEED to start both, not even Drogba.

Bit of both really, i suppose alot of it is after last season people hoping he is capable of pulling those kind of scores again. I think partly the idea has snowballed a bit on here and if every man and his dog wasn't talking about him some people would probably be less tempted. That said he does seem like the best attacking Chelsea option to me, so if i was going to go down that road it would be Lampard i'd want - I just think the pricetag is too much for a player that has shown nothing all season.

I've gone with Cole & Luiz personally.

Thing about Lampard is that he doesn't need to play well to score well in FPL.

His entire career has proven that.

              This. So, so this.

I really do think he'll score well. A corner assist and a penalty over two games, some appearance points, CS points, and the inexplicable (but totally expected) bonus and he's suddenly got himself a tasty score having offered very little going forward.

              Again.

What's everyone doing with VdV? He's looked shockingly unfit recently...got 0 bonus of late and hasnt been involved in any of tottenham's (few) goals.
That said, he played ok for Holland the other week apparently (scoring as well), has a double coming up, and should be on penalties.
Im planning to keep at the moment...but was interested in what other people thought. Cheers

It sounds like i'm in the same boat as you.

I suppose if there was another midfielder i desperately wanted he would probably be the first to make way (or Nasri), but right now there aren't. Hopefully Spurs will pick up a little bit if they are going for 4th place. I kind of hope that City losing might tempt Harry into resting VDV tonight, not holding my breath mind.

          I'll keep him.
It's a bit like with Drogba earlier in the season. People kept him for too long, but it's hard to know when (or if) form turns.

I've done my free transfer for GW33 anyway. Considered VDV->Walcott, but already have Nasri and figured out it wouldn't be worth the risk.

I've got the impression VDV is a bit "moody" as a player. Played really well when Spurs did well, not so good when the team has been struggling and had the margins against them in recent weeks. With Spurs on the way up again (and City down), I'm betting on a VDV revival.

Also, im thinking of bringing in a fulham player this week for coleman (if no other injuries) despite Fulham's blank. Reasoning is that i've got 2 free, and if i dont use at least one then it's effectively wasted right? So if i bring a Fulham player in, bench him (coleman was going to be benched anyway), then i should have him ready for next week + 2 frees still in the bag?
        That sounds right doesnt it?

I'm starting to think that maybe enough, but im considering maybe a Birmingham defender, VDV -> Walcott or Foster -> Cech but not sure I really wanna do anyone of them so might just go for a doubler for next week and bench em.

Anyone know what's the deal with the Birmingham back 4?

Obviously Johnson Ridgewell & Carr are the certs, Parnaby has played the last 2 but is that coz Jiranek has been out and if so when's he back? Just didn't no if Parnaby might be a good cheap option?
