Fernando Torres continues his Sutton-esque form for Chelsea as the Londoners are sent packing in the all-English quarter final. Carlo Ancelotti tries that old 4-3-2-1 favourite but finds his Christmas tree-shaped plans are out of season. Man United continue their push for the treble by recording their seventh straight win in all competitions, as Ryan Giggs provides the creative spark to propel Fergie’s side into the last four. Here’s the notes from last night’s Champions League heavyweight showdown…

The Other Brazilian Centre-Back
Since signing on the dotted line at Stamford Bridge back in January, David Luiz has caught the eye of Fantasy Managers far and wide with goals, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points, clean sheets and the added guarantee of being ineligible for European competitions. Now Chelsea are out of Europe and their squad is burgeoning just that little bit more – particularly at the back. Having been injured since late November, Alex returned to the starting line-up against United and while he neither shone or prove a liability last night, his return adds the further chance of rotation to the Blues back-four.

With Chelsea having just seven Premier League games remaining this season and four registered centre-backs (Luiz, Alex, Ivanovic and Terry) as well as three viable right-backs (Bosingwa, Ivanovic and Ferreira) is anyone besides Ashley Cole now safe from rotation?

Ramires Shows His Hand
Another Brazilian decided to play to type yesterday evening when Ramires (the bookies favourites for a yellow card pre-game) decided to go the whole hog and pick up not one but a matching pair of yellows. Chelsea were resultantly left with an even greater uphill task, having only 10 men for the final 20 minutes of the match. Anyone looking for a wild gamble on Ramires ahead of Chelsea’s double header can be assured that his suspension does not cross over to the Premier League. Ancelotti however, may well be questioning Ramires’ big game temperament given his double booking last night.

693 Minutes and Counting…
As this site rather happily points out, Fernando Torres still hasn’t been able to notch his first goal for Chelsea. Being substituted at half-time for Didier Drogba will likely only dent the Spaniard’s confidence and pretty much sums up his display in the first forty-five. Given that he has a weighty Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price-tag of 11.5, even ahead of a promising double-gameweek, there looks to be better options elsewhere.

Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree
Carlo Ancelotti did at least appear to try and work to Torres’ strengths with last night’s formation. As pointed out by The Guardian’s own Sir Paulos, Jonathan Wilson, just 24 hours ago, the 4-4-2 of late doesn’t help El Nino’s cause. By reverting to a 4-3-2-1 christmas tree formation, one that he used reliably at AC Milan, the man in charge appears to have acknowledged that Torres requires improved service. The change failed to help matters, as neither Nicolas Anelka nor Frank Lampard offered the creative bridge between the midfield and strikeforce required to feed Torres on the night.

Frank Lampard: Anonymous and Expensive
Chelsea’s Mr. Reliable didn’t have a bad game, but he certainly didn’t have a good one either – but we can confirm he was on the pitch. The average position of the 20 goal a season man perhaps provides solace in the fact he was given a greater influence further up the field than in recent weeks, but apart from Chelsea’s only shot on target of the first-half, his contributions weren’t significant when assessing Chelsea’s display.

Drogba Puts His Case Forward
The Ivorian striker is by no means on fire right now, but, then again, few are in the Chelsea squad at present. Drogba’s half-time introduction certainly reinvigorated the Chelsea attack and his direct approach ultimately brought reward, even if the satisfaction of his equaliser diminished quickly. Drogba might not be Chelsea’s most in-form striker right now -that honour is reserved for Danny Sturridge on loan at Bolton- but with 2 goals in his last 3 games he’s certainly worthy of consideration over Torres.

Berbatov Benched Again
A goal in Saturday’s home win over Fulham was not enough to maintain his place in the United starting line-up, as Dimitar Berbatov returned to bench-warming duties again last night. Having served one game of his two-match domestic ban, Wayne Rooney returned to the first XI, as did Javier Hernandez, with Fergie reverting back to 4-4-2, following the weekend 4-3-3. Little Pea continued his fantastic debut season with a crucial opener on the verge of half-time, further making a mockery of the minimal £6m United paid for his services last summer.

Valencia Gets a Rest and Some Praise From the Boss
With United still in the hunt for a possible treble, rotation will surely continue to be an issue over the next few weeks. Having just returned from long-term injury, Antonio Valencia has been in fantastic form of late but perhaps with the club’s packed schedule in mind, the right winger found himself joining Berbatov on the bench last night. The United boss found time to praise Valencia prior to the match:

“We expected Antonio to come back like this. He is an outstanding footballer, who is very capable of being a threat. His understanding of the game is terrific. He has a great tactical brain. The boy has everything, balance, power and speed. When we got nearer the time, we couldn’t get him back quickly enough. We arranged closed-doors games to get his tempo and rhythm back.”

Ji Sung-Park started instead on the right and vindicated his selection with a busy performance and the goal that effectively killed off Chelsea’s hopes of a revival, literally seconds after Drogba had given the ten-man visitors a lifeline.

Giggs Tore Them Apart, Again
Playing in central midfield, Ryan Giggs showed real class with two sublime assists that cut through the dogged Chelsea resistance. The Welshman has now assisted United’s last four goals in the competition and, with such a vital contribution on this European run, no one would blame Fergie if he was rested for this upcoming weekend for United’s trip to Wembley and preserved purely for the semi-final, which will surely be against Schalke.

United Defence
John O’Shea got the nod over Wes Brown at right-back, with Rafael not 100% ready for selection. Rio Ferdinand started alongside Nemanja Vidic and within ten minutes it seemed like the ex-England captain would have to depart the proceedings, but the injury worry subsided and Ferdinand saw the 90 minutes out without any further complications. The Drogba goal was only the third United have conceded in the Champions League all season, in a run that has saw them chalk up seven clean sheets along the way.

Fergie Delighted with Form
There was no hiding his pride after the 3-1 aggregate win saw United reach the semi-finals yet again under Sir Alex Ferguson. With the afore-mentioned treble still very much on the cards, the United boss beamed post-match:

“I think we’ve hit our form. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. It’s a great moment for us and I think the players are enjoying it. They’re relishing the challenges they’ve got now. I think you saw that tonight…Momentum is a great thing. The bonus I’ve got is that all my players are getting fit again now and that’s a great boost for us.”

With Man City still licking their wounds from Monday night’s Anfield hammering and more than likely to be without the talents of Carlos Tevez, Fergie will be looking forward to this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final against the “noisy neighbours” with a certain wicked relish.

I'm getting tempted by nani & kolarov -> walcott & a.cole for an 8 pointer, I'd then play cole instead of walker and I'd have 1 playing sub this week.
      walker(whm) & nani(new??) vs
      cole(wba,BIR) & walcott(LIV,tot) -8

      what do ya reckon lads?

yeah it'd be a gamble for sure. Wish we knew whether nani was playing v city before deadline. Would make me a lot less worried about him sitting out newcastle if he didn't play much vs city.

With Rooney suspended and Giggs maybe rested, I don't think there is any doubt about Nani starting in the FA Cup game, we need his creativity in Rooney's absence, so he is certainly a rotation risk for Tuesday I would say.

Tempted by Nani or Rooney OUT myself as I have both, with Champions League going for another round rotation will be rife in the squad, and I think Nani could find himself on the bench a bit or rested, he played very well last night.

The problem with Nani is that with Valencia hitting the ground running as he has, they are both almost interchangeable, and with Anderson/Park back from injury, they have someone to put on the wings if needs be.

Nani OUT is a gamble, but one that could pay off with so little time in the season left.

feeling a bit twitchy about my team. taken a 4-pointer already, but i'm learning from looking at the teams doing well that point hits are by no means a bad thing...provided you get them right.

    here's the team:

    mignolet (al habsi)
    coleman/luiz/rjohnson (kolarov/walker)
    nasri/nani/malouda/vdv (young)
    welbeck/rvp/torres

main question i'm considering atm is whether it's worth it to take another 4-pt hit to replace torres with drogba.

    thoughts much appreciated!

Let's assume the quantum mechanics many-worlds hypothesis is true, and for every decision I make, there's parallel universes where I'm making the decision differently, with every possible outcome being realized.
But clearly SOME of these decisions are going to be bad ones. If I'm making every possible choice then I'm going to make mistakes so bad that they'll kill me.
But for every one of these choices-so-bad-they're-fatal, there's another universe in which it goes differently and I live.
Try to kill me, and a parallel me survives! I have achieved QUANTUM IMMORTALITY, with at least one version of my consciousness surviving indefinitely. And there's a non-zero chance that I'm the immortal me.
Shoot me and I'll catch the bullets with my teeth, beat you up, spit the bullets on you and say "Next time, shoot me when I'm yawning". And if I don't do it in our universe it's only because I'm busy doing it somewhere else.

Honestly, how is low self-esteem even a thing??

Decisions decisions. Trying to catchup 50 points on minileage leader, team linked.

Could use some advice on transfers:

    A) VDV > Adam. Original on plan to get Adam in VDV not in form and tough game against Arsenel. Leader has both. Torres can be subbed out for Rooney easily after the double if he doesn't fire.

    B) Torres and VDV > Lampard and Gyan (4 point hit). Makes the last few weeks holding Torres seem like even more of a waste if he fires in the double but the probablity of him doing that seems small. Provides Lampard for double and rest of season but very hard to get Rooney back in.

    C) Torres > Drogs. Drogs is at least scoring, keeps VDV in for another week, possible miss out on Adam points. Can do Droggs to Rooney after double if he doesnt fire.

    D) VDV > Malouda. Have Malouda for double with Torres. possible miss out on Adam points. Can do Droggs to Rooney after double if he doesnt fire, Malouda or Nasri for Adam the week after.

Help please, explanation with choice would be great or another option I have missed.

I'm looking at Begovic Baird & Zamora

Next question: After the double is anyone with RVP & Fabregas gonna get rid of Cesc?

I know it depends on how he does (and whether he gets injured) but they have some tough games and I reckon RVP might be enough.

Thinking Fabregas -> Cheap DGW Mid next week might free up some cash to get a Rooney etc.

Good day all. Thinking about United's pesky rotation - surely Nani will play against Man City making him unlikely to play or at least start in the GW? Thinking of an 8 point hit

    Coleman out A.Cole in
    VDV out Adam in
    Nani out Valencia in.

This would give me (DGW in italics)
    Howard
    Cole Luiz Ridgewell
    Adam Lampard Nasri Valencia? Young
    RVP Carroll

    Subs: Mignolet, Gyan, Simpson, Walker

Should I leave the Nani transfer? I really can't see him playing, and I'd worry about no United attacking coverage. Perhaps Walcott could do, but then I'm not sure he will feature in both games.

Strength in numbers Til. To me the Nani-Valencia transfer seems entirely logical and I'm hoping that Valencia can pick up close to what Nani picks up at home by picking up decent returns BOTH home and away

I think were all second guessing who will play when with United at the moment but we cant be sure so doing Nani to Valencia sems like it could work out terrible if Valenica doesnt play but Nani does, Id say if your gonna get rid of Nani go for someone else altogether.

Hey atilla. I'm thinking the same thing. I've already done barton to adam for free now I'm considering kolarov, nani -> a.cole, walcott for -8.
Like you say he'll surely play vs city with roon out so yeah I'm convinced there's a good chance he'll be benched against your lot. Not sure about valencia though, he'll be sitting out a few as well with champs league coming up. Walcott's the better bet imo. Really torn on this 8 pointer 😕

the rotation is exactly why I wouldn't do the transfer. that and not knowing who will play in the fa cup and who might get injured in the fa cup. a 4 point hit before that match would a risk too far for me

Tough one isn't it? I think what I can do is instead of VDV to Adam I could keep VDV and swap Nani for Adam.
Risky as I want rid of VDV, and I'd have no United player for this GW, but it saves me 4 points.

      Make sense?

They will concede 1 to Liverpool and at least 2 to Spurs, so that by my reckoning is 3 points if he plays both and doesn't score or get bonus.

Really don't fancy Arsenal to keep a cleanie in either game, but on the flip side, if I had him I would be happy to have another DGW'er of course.

Considering Rooney OUT Drogba IN as my freebie this week, and then maybe a 4 pointer on Coleman OUT Cole IN, I have a feeling that despite maybe not starting the two games, Drogba has a few goals and assists in him. Would give me RVP/Drogba/Nasri/Carr/Luiz/Foster playing twice with maybe Cole too, anyone thinking of shipping Rooney for a week or two?
