Bottom of the Premier League table is a precarious place to be with only six games remaining on the fixture list. Wigan Athletic currently hold this unenviable position, but the scenario is not quite as disastrous as it may seem. With a mere eight points separating themselves from 9th placed Newcastle United, up to eleven clubs, in theory, could still tumble down to the Championship – the Latics have a fighting chance.

If offered 17th place right now, Roberto Martinez and Wigan supporters would undoubtedly bite your arm off and yet, the Latics are currently just two points off a Blackpool side in that position, who themselves have just one win in their last twelve games. Wigan go to Blackpool this weekend and with a relatively handsome run of games to conclude the end of season dogfight (blp, sun, EVE, avl, WHM, stk), it’s fair to say that we shouldn’t write them off both as a Premier League side and a source of Fantasy talent.

The first Wigan player that springs to mind for many a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) veteran is Charles N’Zogbia. The French left winger has been something of an institution in recent seasons due to his modest price tag and an ability to fetch hefty FPL returns – this season he has claimed 117 FPL points, which is almost double the majority of his team-mates have mustered.

One of N’Zogbia’s major draws is his blossoming relationship with the FPL Bonus Points judges. This season has seen this maintained – N’Zogbia has collected 26 – bettered by just Charlie Adam, Luka Modric and Carlos Tevez. With six favourable fixtures to go, you wouldn’t put it past N’Zogbia to surpass his tally of 31 from last term. Aside from his Bonus potential, N’Zogbia can also pose a serious threat when the mood takes him. With regular set piece involvement thrown into the miz, N’Zogbia has found the back of the net on 4 occasions, assisting 5 times this season.

N’Zogbia is unquestionably a class act but it’s Wigan’s need for points and the Frenchman’s own ambitions to catch the eye ahead of a potential summer move, that makes him worthy of consideration.

Wigan’s form shouldn’t necessarily be a concern. Speaking after the recent loss to Chelsea, gaffer Martinez admitted that his side are playing decent football and thinks they have what it takes to pick-up the points needed escape the drop:

“The players were on the floor but more because of the lack of the result. They are all aware in the last eight games we have reached a level. We’ve finally clicked and the players know that. I think 41 points is needed to stay up especially as we have the worst goal difference.”

N’Zogbia has the ability to play a major part in Wigan’s escape act and emerge as true end of season Fantasy force. Roberto Martinez and any Fantasy investors will be relying on the Frenchman turning up though – the fact that N’Zogbia was subbed after 60 minutes of the 1-0 defeat at Chelsea indicates that Martinez will sacrifice the winger if he feels he lacks the stomach for the battle. That’s a concern, but at just 5.5 and with an ownership of 7.2% in the FPL, N’Zogbia is a player of proven Fantasy pedigree about to embark on a kind run of fixtures that could put him firmly in the summer shop window.

I just went a bit mad and did a 8 point hit. Got fed up with umming and arrghing about my DGW team. Zigic has been the biggest pain in my arse for so long and I have had enough of him. Did Zigic -> Suarez, Hart -> Foster, and Hangeland -> R Johnson

    DGW33 team:
    Foster
    R Johnson Coleman Luiz
    Walcott Adam Nasri Lampard
    Suarez RVP Drogba(C)

    Subs: Reina Bardsley Simpson Dempsey

What do you guys think about my transfers, subs and Captain choice? Too late to change now, will just have to see how it goes 😀

No United cover will bite you in the ass, great team but not sure how wise it was to transfer out Hangeland where he has a double next week and Birmingham are unlikely to keep a single clean sheet this DGW, that being said, I fancy your front 3 to score well this week, am going back and forwards on Drogba, I think he could be the man to have this DGW, I really do.

Feeling pretty good about my team for this coming GW. Have taken a 4 point hit (Gordon and Nani out, Cech and Downing in) but I end up with:

    CECH
    LUIZ, R JOHNSON, Walker
LAMPARD (c), NASRI, WALCOTT, Adam, Downing
    Rooney, VAN PERSIE
Subs: Begovic, Hoilett, Coleman, M Kelly
    0.8m in the bank

Any thoughts or advice? Lampard right captain?

RVP is in better form but Lampard has better DGW fixtures. Tough choice. If you are chasing a lead, then go with Lamps. If you are protecting a lead, go with RVP as most people will be captaining him.

Just did VDV > Malouda. Looking through the opta stats on key passes and attempts at goal for last 4 weeks and last 2 weeks convinced me. Was originally going to do VDV > Adam and this could still hurt me but mini league leader has Adam so may as well go for differential and try make up some points.

Absolutely, Arsenal will not keep clean sheets this week, but have a chance in the next 3-4 to at least get one or two, and for 4.0 Djourou is great value, my only concern is (a) will he walk back into the team and (b) will he not be rotated in and out despite Arsenal's defensive record with him in the team, what do the Arsenal boys say on him?

I think Drogba will rip it up this week but I can't take out Rooney, and I don't have the bottle to make an 8 point hit just to remove Wellbeck for Drogba myself.

Okay, so I am going to ask the obvious question, where N'Zogbia hasn't scored or assisted in 6 games (granted these were really tough fixtures) why now does he become a prospect, yes, Wigan have some nice fixtures, but Wigan are still a bit toothless, I think Rodallega is on penalties so it is not for that, he is on set pieces but he hasn't had much joy recently has he?

Funny thing is I saw this Watchlist article and playing around with my team I put him in and then thought, "hang on a minute, why would I put him in my team", I think that Cleverly is just as likely to score in the run of current fixtures and he really allows you splash the cash elsewhere, he also seems to guarantee 90 minutes, something the sulky Frenchman cannot, I know that he is a bonus darling, but a lot of the games left will be sloppy dogfight affairs, I am not sure the BP's will be as forthcoming as earlier in the season when there was less at stake for Wigan.

For the record it's been Ben Watson on the majority of set piece duties for Wigan (this includes penalties).

But i disagree, if I was going to go for any Wigan player I'd want N'Zogbia mostly down to his history of BP and if wigan do well it's usually Charlie that gobbles up the BP's. Whether that trend is set to continue I don't know but that aside I wouldn't see Cleverley or McCarthy as bad alternatives and they're cheaper too.

very nice indeed but I think you could see Nani get 20 minutes in the Newcastle game or not at all, everything points to Nani playing at the weekend to fill the creative and playmaking void left by Rooney's suspension, and when Rooney is back for Newcastle I think he will be rested for the weekend game against Everton which is only 4 days later, you could have an awesome score with Lampard and Torres, but you could also be crying too.

          Good luck!

Yeah, the risk is pretty big with Lampard & Torres which is why I'm going for Van Persie captain. Chelsea are just so off form at the minute.

I'm going to keep Nani anyway, he is a differential for me in my league surprisingly so may aswel keep him. Will get rid when I get Rooney back (again).

Would you guys make extra changes to this team? Free trade done.

    foster

    luiz walker coleman

    lamps nasri nani vdv adam

    rvp suarez

friedal sturridge kolarov kelly 0.3 in bank

No playing subs as you can see so coleman could screw me if he's not fit, seems quite likely nani could be in for a cameo too.

If I do nani to walcott for -4 I could then afford one of suarez -> drogba, kolarov -> a.cole/terry (bench walker/coleman) or kelly -> RJ (bench walker/coleman). Any of those worth -8? Or any other ideas? I'm stumped on how to play it this week, cheers lads.

I have your three defenders but benching Walker as I think he, and Coleman wont play
Not sure if Id doble on Chelsea defence but think you def need another strong guaranteed starter at the back?
ManU?, Bir, possibly Blackpool?!! then drop Kelly? or Coleman, as his fixtures are poor

I would do Nani to walcott if i'm honest, and then keep it at that. Coleman not playing would be covered by walcott playing twice, but i do expect coleman to play, if not atleast have an appearance from the bench.

Selling nani for anyone is unwise imo- even if he IS rotated (unlikely this week tbh) then he might STILL rack up plenty of points should he come on for the last 20 minutes of matches when defences are tired.

The reason I'm selling Nani is this basically
        PLAYER______ FIXTURES
        Nani______ new, EVE
        Adam______ WIG, NEW
        VDV_______ ARS, WBA

With him extremely unlikely to start against Newcastle, I think he is less likely to score more points than Adam (his replacement) or VDV (my other option to sell) in the next two.

I imagine he will be on the bench. He might not though, nothing is guaranteed, but he will play his strongest available side against City in the semi final potentially meaning rests for some players against Newcastle.

I suppose but can't see him resting Nani unless he is injured. If anything i'd have thought he was more likely to get rested for the home game with Everton the following GW. Aren't the CL semis a couple of days after that match?

You could be right, but he has already rested him at least once. He has Valencia back now and Park to choose from. At this stage I need to make some brave calls to have any hope of winning my minileague and this is an obvious one.

VDS OUT Begovic IN (for Stoke double in 34)
    Nani OUT Fabregas IN

    LUIZ/CARR/Coleman (Walker/ Simpson)
    LAMPARD(c)/NASRI/FABREGAS/Adam (O'Hara)
    DROGBA/RVP/DjCampbell

I still think nani may well be rested v city and therefore start v newcastle. Seeing as Valencia was rested in the CL he's surely gonna start against City, which may see nani sitting on the bench for a long time. Admittedly it's also likely that we could see nani on the left and Valencia on the right at Wembley.

Hmmmm- good point well made actually. The think is I'm in a difficult position in my minileague. If I play safe I could well get the second place position and the league leader is 70 points ahead- basically I can't really decide whether to hold my ground or go for broke.......

Right, i've lost patience with VDV he looks like a passenger the last few weeks. It was 20 minutes into the match tonight before i even realised he was on the pitch.

Team is linked and i'm thinking of taking a 4 point hit to do:

    VDV -> Walcott
    Nolan -> Lampard
    Tevez -> Sturridge

    What do you guys think?
