Just six Gameweeks remain in the 2010/11 Premier League season and, as “squeaky bum time” approaches, teams begin to catch up on those fixtures rescheduled from early year congestion. With their euphoric Carling Cup run, Birmingham have been playing much of the second half of the season with a game in hand but Gameweek 33 will finally see them pull alongside the rest of the pack by playing two Premier League matches, in what could be a pivotal five day period for their top-flight survival chances.

Alex McLeish’s side currently hold 35 Premier League points and sit 16th in the league, with just 4 points separating themselves from bottom club Wigan Athletic. But the league is so tightly balanced that, theoretically, anyone from ninth-placed Newcastle downwards could still fall through the relegation trap door.

The Prospects

Other than Wigan, Birmingham have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League this season, averaging just one goal per game (31). Although significantly better than their fellow relegation strugglers, the club’s Goals Against column in the Premier League table doesn’t make up for their lacklustre finishing and they currently hold a poor goal difference (-12). The Blues are not in the best of form, with just 1 win in their last 6 Premier League outings, a run Big Eck will be urgently looking to improve.

The first of the two clashes, which sees them play host to Sunderland, is undoubtedly the more attractive of the pair. The Blues have performed better at St Andrews than on their travels this season, picking up 22 of their 35 points on home soil. Sunderland are just 3 points better off than Birmingham and are suffering an extreme loss of form, suffering defeat in 7 of their last 8 fixtures. This barren patch could work in Birmingham’s favour, although Steve Bruce and co will be looking to secure their Premier League status and prove their worth.

What makes this first game of the double so crucial is Birmingham then travel down the M40 in midweek to face Chelsea. Knocked out of Europe and all but out of the title race, Carlo Ancelotti’s side’s most realistic focus is to finish second in the Premier League – on paper their season is pretty much over. But Ancelotti will be wanting to keep his job and players such as Fernando Torres definitely have something to prove – a trip to Stamford Bridge is always going to be difficult.

The Likely Lads

Goalkeeper Ben Foster is always a solid choice between the posts and 25% of Fantasy Premier League Managers have noticed. The England international is in good form at the moment and, before the 1-1 draw with Blackburn, he had made 28 saves in 3 games. Priced at 5.3 on the FPL, there are certainly cheaper options out there but Foster’s return of 129 for the season proves his reliability and worth.

In the Birmingham defence we have Fantasy favourites Roger Johnson (5.3) and Liam Ridgewell (5.5) – both of whom hold around 11% ownership. These guys are solid choices who can occasionally chip in with the odd goal; Ridgewell has found the back of the net 4 times this season. Johnson has the heart of the bonus point judges though and may be the wiser choice – he has fetched 20 this term and 6 in his last 4 games. Johnson was struggling with a slight knock and managed just 45 minutes against Blackburn last week, but McLeish has since quelled any fears by stating the centre half should be ready for this weekend.

Craig Gardner is the Blues’ top goal scorer this season in the Premier League with 6 and priced at 4.9 he offers a bargain midfield option, particularly with his penalty duties. David Bentley could be worth a look at if he recovers from his groin injury in time but apart from that, it really is slim pickings in the Birmingham midfield for Fantasy Managers. There’s the cheap valuation of the likes of Lee Bowyer and Barry Ferguson – but they don’t offer much more.

The most in-form striker is currently Cameron Jerome, who has returned a respectable 2 assists and one Bonus Point in the last 2 games. Not someone to get overly excited about, he should, nevertheless, start both fixtures and is fairly budget at 5.5. Nikola Zigic is a slightly better shout, but a groin injury has meant that he hasn’t started any of the last 5 fixtures and he is unlikely to feature predominantly in both outings.

Cheeky Punt

Who doesn’t want Kevin Phillips to do well these days? The 37 year old Premier League veteran has recently found himself back amongst the first team, starting the last 2 matches and scoring against Bolton. Although 2 games in the space of 5 days might be too much, couldn’t you half imagine him bagging a goal against former club Sunderland? Priced at 4.1 on the FPL, he would free up funds for big money purchases.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

    Folks,

    Have 2 transfers this gw.

Going to do Huth -> Luiz

Already have Fat Frank and Nasri.

Thinking of Young -> to either Ramires/Walcott (any other suggestions welcome )

Who do people think is going to do better this game week ?

    Cheers

I'd keep Young for the longer term fixtures - I think RVP & Nasri is enough for the dgw. You could argue a case for Walcott to do better than Nasri too.

Normally yes, but Cole hasn't looked on top of his game tbh. Personally, it wouldn't be a huge surprise if Zhirkov played one of the DGW games.

Other than Luiz, I'm struggling to justify getting in any other Chelsea defender. Cech ideally but I have a DGW keeper in Foster.

I do think Terry will play both games though.

I appreciate it's a risk losing Nani, but having both Nani and Rooney doesn't sit comfortably. Valencia and Park will surely eat into his pitch time, and Malouda have two games really appeals, darn it! I'm not one for trying to protect a lead so I'm 60/40 on making that move tbh.

Your call but think I'd get rid of Hart and get Cech rather than get Malouda in. Just a thought...

    Foster
    Luiz/Djourou/Carr
    Nani/VDV/Fabregas/Lampard
    RVP/Zigic/Suarez

    Subs: Begovic/Barton/Walker/Coleman

Rival in 2nd has made two changes already and I'm pretty sure he's put in Drogba.

Do I stick with what I've got and bank the two frees for next week or do i ship out VDV for Adam and then get in Drogs for Suarez?

Thoughts and opinions would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I'm in a similar situation! Think I'll roll over my 2nd free transfer to next week so I don't get a -4 hit, as will wanna do two transfers.

Team linked - I need to do one transfer and no idea where to focus! Any ideas?

I would say get rid of Hart as he's holding up funds to use elsewhere.

I can't wait to get rid of Zigic though that'd for sure!

    2 free transfers do i:

    a) Coleman out for RJ/Bardsley/Walker and Berbatov out for Bent?
    b) Coleman out for RJ/Bardsley/Walker, downgrade hart or vidic and rooney in for berba(4 pt hit)
    c) one option of a and save transfer?

    Malouda or Walcott?
Malouda has the minutes and the fixtures however Walcott is a cheeky punt at 6.9 returning from injury and must be in the mix this weekend

Team linked, think I need to ship out Best but no decent options unless I use 2 freebies this week and trade someone down. Thinking of saving a freebie and Nasri for Adam and Best for someone decent. Waddaya reckon?

    Team link at name.

    Already done Tevez>Drogba.

Ohara & Huth is for next week. It left me with:
    non-confirm starter - Nani & Smalling
Injury doubt - Zigic & Djourou

Is keeping Zigic & Djourou is too much of optimistic? Thinking to do:
    Nani>Walcott & Djourou>Walker.

    Any thought?

The Man U situation is a real pain. I'd keep Djourou as first sub. You don't need Nasri and Walcott unless you plan to transfer out Nasri next week in which case just do Nani -> Walcott.

I am biased and not that good this season... for me Nani is looking to go for Dempsey next week.

Id wait to see if any further news on Djourou is mentioned before the weekend. Thinking of taking a risk myself with Nani -> Walcott and VDV -> N'Zog (hoping there is a goalfest in the Wigan vs Blackpool game)

    Who am I?

I was born in the former West Germany in 1960. My precocious talent and diminutive talents lead to Koln picking up my services from an early age to which I would sandwich an indifferent period in Paris.

After my second stint in Koln I decided to ply my trade in the far east with lucrative rewards.

I am a world cup winner with West Germany, and twice runner up.

I took over as a particularly Dutch shounding German team on a caretaker bashis after their linguistically challenged manager couldn't cut the mushtard.

Not too keen on playing Walker this week...

Transfer is good, although I'd probably bench one of Gyan or Carroll instead of Young.

    My front 8 are:

    Nani, Walcott, Adam, Lamps ,Young
    Bent, RVP, Odem

    Do I:

    A. Play Nani and leave Odem (v CHE) on the bench

    B. Play Odem and leave Nani on the bench

    C. Sell Odem for Carroll for a 4pt hit and bench Nani (who is being sold next week barring amazing news)

Do A or B (which one?) and sell Odem & Nani for Carroll and Dempsey next week?

    E. Something else?

    Thanx.

    I plan to do
