Just six Gameweeks remain in the 2010/11 Premier League season and, as “squeaky bum time” approaches, teams begin to catch up on those fixtures rescheduled from early year congestion. With their euphoric Carling Cup run, Birmingham have been playing much of the second half of the season with a game in hand but Gameweek 33 will finally see them pull alongside the rest of the pack by playing two Premier League matches, in what could be a pivotal five day period for their top-flight survival chances.

Alex McLeish’s side currently hold 35 Premier League points and sit 16th in the league, with just 4 points separating themselves from bottom club Wigan Athletic. But the league is so tightly balanced that, theoretically, anyone from ninth-placed Newcastle downwards could still fall through the relegation trap door.

The Prospects

Other than Wigan, Birmingham have scored the fewest goals in the Premier League this season, averaging just one goal per game (31). Although significantly better than their fellow relegation strugglers, the club’s Goals Against column in the Premier League table doesn’t make up for their lacklustre finishing and they currently hold a poor goal difference (-12). The Blues are not in the best of form, with just 1 win in their last 6 Premier League outings, a run Big Eck will be urgently looking to improve.

The first of the two clashes, which sees them play host to Sunderland, is undoubtedly the more attractive of the pair. The Blues have performed better at St Andrews than on their travels this season, picking up 22 of their 35 points on home soil. Sunderland are just 3 points better off than Birmingham and are suffering an extreme loss of form, suffering defeat in 7 of their last 8 fixtures. This barren patch could work in Birmingham’s favour, although Steve Bruce and co will be looking to secure their Premier League status and prove their worth.

What makes this first game of the double so crucial is Birmingham then travel down the M40 in midweek to face Chelsea. Knocked out of Europe and all but out of the title race, Carlo Ancelotti’s side’s most realistic focus is to finish second in the Premier League – on paper their season is pretty much over. But Ancelotti will be wanting to keep his job and players such as Fernando Torres definitely have something to prove – a trip to Stamford Bridge is always going to be difficult.

The Likely Lads

Goalkeeper Ben Foster is always a solid choice between the posts and 25% of Fantasy Premier League Managers have noticed. The England international is in good form at the moment and, before the 1-1 draw with Blackburn, he had made 28 saves in 3 games. Priced at 5.3 on the FPL, there are certainly cheaper options out there but Foster’s return of 129 for the season proves his reliability and worth.

In the Birmingham defence we have Fantasy favourites Roger Johnson (5.3) and Liam Ridgewell (5.5) – both of whom hold around 11% ownership. These guys are solid choices who can occasionally chip in with the odd goal; Ridgewell has found the back of the net 4 times this season. Johnson has the heart of the bonus point judges though and may be the wiser choice – he has fetched 20 this term and 6 in his last 4 games. Johnson was struggling with a slight knock and managed just 45 minutes against Blackburn last week, but McLeish has since quelled any fears by stating the centre half should be ready for this weekend.

Craig Gardner is the Blues’ top goal scorer this season in the Premier League with 6 and priced at 4.9 he offers a bargain midfield option, particularly with his penalty duties. David Bentley could be worth a look at if he recovers from his groin injury in time but apart from that, it really is slim pickings in the Birmingham midfield for Fantasy Managers. There’s the cheap valuation of the likes of Lee Bowyer and Barry Ferguson – but they don’t offer much more.

The most in-form striker is currently Cameron Jerome, who has returned a respectable 2 assists and one Bonus Point in the last 2 games. Not someone to get overly excited about, he should, nevertheless, start both fixtures and is fairly budget at 5.5. Nikola Zigic is a slightly better shout, but a groin injury has meant that he hasn’t started any of the last 5 fixtures and he is unlikely to feature predominantly in both outings.

Cheeky Punt

Who doesn’t want Kevin Phillips to do well these days? The 37 year old Premier League veteran has recently found himself back amongst the first team, starting the last 2 matches and scoring against Bolton. Although 2 games in the space of 5 days might be too much, couldn’t you half imagine him bagging a goal against former club Sunderland? Priced at 4.1 on the FPL, he would free up funds for big money purchases.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Not beyond the realms of possibility with United's iffy away form. Newcastle's source of goals looks dubious though.

Not impossible - they'll just be off the FA Cup match. But Rooney normally scores at least one against us, not impossible but unlikely.

Keep flipping who to get in our of Lampard or Drogba. Lamps would be a 4 point hit, would like Carlo to name his team like he did when things were going well. Some thing about the guarantee of 180 mins from Lamps (barring injury) is worth the extra 0.9m he costs more than Drogba in the game.

Going to keep thinking about this one, probably bottle it and go for Lamps. I just dont think he is playing well and his main goal threat is from penalties. As I havent seen him score a direct free kick for a while.

It's one €20 bet, can't split it up can only use it in one go.

If I use it on a dead cert it should win, which means I get the money in my account and can split the €20 up into smaller bets as well as my winnings

You don't get the original stake back with a free bet, just the winnings.

So if you put the money on something that's 1/10, you'd only make 2 quid out of it. Bookies would take an absolute hammering if they allowed people their stakes back on free bets....

    Who Am I?
I was born in Palermo, Italy in 1964. I first played professionally for Messina in 1982 where I stayed until 1989. I got my big break when I signed for Juventus scoring 15 times in my first season for them, winning both the Copa Italia and the UEFA Cup. Due to my inventive and aggressive attacking style I was selected to represent Italy in the 1990 World Cup.
After that tournament I played one more season for Juve before an ill fated move to Inter where I suffered from injuries. I later joined Japanese side Jubilo Iwata becoming the first Italian to play in the J League.
    I retired in 1999. Who am I?

    Who am I?

I was born in Rome in 1976 and my early years in football saw me hop quickly from Serie B to the giants of Parma and Juve in Serie A.

A two year stint in Spain showed that not all Italinas are a complete flop in La Liga scoring 11 goals in 35 appearances, but my form dwindled and I found myself principally out in Ligue 1 on loan before returning to Serie A.

I've scored goals wherever and whenever and defying the odds even to this day by being up there with the top scorers in Italy.

I certainly wouldn't want to Ferret around.

Was all over his wikipedia page only about a week ago... Was checking the top scorers in Italy - to check whether Cavani was numero uno because he'd scored fewer goals from penalties than Di Natale - and saw that he was high up in the scorers.

Currently 3rd I think. Cavani 2nd if i'm right after his hattrick last week?

Di Vaio = always a soft spot for the lad.

    Evening fellas,

    Quick bit of advice please,

Is a -4 to bring in Djourou for Coleman worth it? Or keep Coleman and play him or Welbeck.

    Cheers

Who Am I? (I bet the Stock gets this)
I was born in Gijon, Spain 1970. I started my career with Sporting De Gijon, before moving to Real Madrid. I played for them for five seasons before controversially seeing out my contract and joining Barcelona.
I retired in 2004 after collecting 62 caps for Spain.

    Welbeck or Zigic

Now Tommy starts off using a Third Reich analogy so lets not be hypocritical. You were daft enough to change your name to a KKK title. I didn't 'lure' anyone, they are well known terms - did you think they were from Harry Potter?

How many days/weeks have you been referring to Granville as 'the grand wizard' and myself as 'grand dragon'? I'm not all that clued up on KKK activity Attila so funnily enough i wouldn't know that those names you repeatedly bandied about were references to that. Now, im a big boy so can handle your mud slinging, but the hypocrisy you've shown after your handbag wielding regarding wildrover has shown this to be a little silly now hasn't it? Or is just because you do it for 'jokes'?

Ha you are such a pansy. I had a go at that fella because Wildrover was repeatedly called a kiddie fiddler by him and another chap.
Now tell me this, why is Tommy's Third Reich analogy acceptable and funny and me likening you to a bunch of demented hillbilly bigots not? Both are a little off colour perhaps but you take umbrage at one not the other - the reason - you were mug enough to change your name without checking. So to cover your embarrassment you decide to climb the highest horse available.
Tommy took the joke, I took the 3rd Reich joke. Get over it.

To be fair, you're both sort of crying over nothing, but in reference to the third reich I'd argue that's not offensive because it's clearly history now and has been consistently satirised on comedy shows such as family guy.

So has the Klan Tommy, but honestly I dont see it in any way offensive - I was just pointing out his hypocrisy in getting on his high horse. I thought your analogy was pretty funny.

    Coleman - Luiz - RJ

    Nasri - Adam - Nani - Lamps

    RVP - Drogs - Odem

    Begovic/Simpson/Hughes/Dempsey

    Hey guys.

    Current team is:

    Szzzzezny
    Walker Coleman(doubtful)Carr
    Young Nani Adam Lamps Nasri
    Roooney Van Persie

    bench. Welbeck, Lolarov, Kelly.

    What would you do?

Option 1. Sit tight and save transfer
Option 2 Nasri to Walcott (to free cash) and Coleman to Luiz (4 point hit)
Option 3. Nasri to Walcott and Kolarov to Luiz (4 point hit)

Leaning towards option 2 as Coleman is doubtful and Everton's fixtures not that nice after next round.

    Thoughts?

One for the road (and the die hards)

    WHO AM I?

I was born in the Netherlands in 1951 and as with so many bright players at provinvial clubs I was picked up by the Ajax machine in the early 70s.

Despite starting off as a right back, I soon found my calling as a roaming midfielder, scoring 1 in 4 for the Amsterdam club during a 4 year stint.

Spain soon called and I enjoyed a 5 year period in La Liga supporting a very famous countryman.

As my legs grew tired, the new world of football and the riches of the States came calling and I was able to see out my playing days in the sunny climes of Florida.

In my current capacity I would be more than capable of seving up the odd donner...

    Who am I?
