A last-ditch Dirk Kuyt penalty all but ends Arsenal’s title challenge and prompts a spat on the sidelines between Kenny Dalglish and Arsene Wenger. Following Man United’s FA Cup exit the previous day, the Emirates draw gives Sir Alex Ferguson something to smile about, as United sit six points clear at the top with only six games remaining. Elsewhere, Stoke routed Bolton 5-0 to set up a Wembley date with Man City next month, as Tony Pulis guides the club to their first cup final since 1972 with a win that ensures European football next season. Here’s the notes from yesterday’s crucial matches….

Goal Shy Gunners
Robin Van Persie’s late penalty was only Arsenal’s second goal in the last four games at the Emirates, as The Gunners failed to impress against a resilient Liverpool. Arsenal may have the best away record in the league but will surely come to rue their inability to break down teams in front of their own fans; they have dropped six points at the Emirates in their last three games alone.

Far Too Robin Reliant
In the last five home games Van Persie has started, Arsenal have scored a total of eight goals and the Dutchman has bagged six of them. Wenger’s side are becoming increasingly reliant on him to prove the difference and it’s not difficult to see the players who have under-achieved around Van Persie; Samir Nasri has just one goal this calendar year but, even more damningly, Cesc Fabregas has found the net once since gameweek 13. No surprise, then, that Van Persie has 11 Bonus Points from his last five home games, with his team-mates failing to impress.

Arsene’s Defensive Returns
Arsenal came into yesterday’s game on the back of a run that had seen them chalk up four clean sheets in a row at home, another example of the defensive stance taken by most opposing teams at the Emirates these days. Boosted by the unexpected return to their starting XI of both Wojciech Szczesny and Johan Djourou -the pair replaced Jens Lehman and Sebastien Squillaci respectively- it looked like five on the spin until Kuyt’s late, late penalty changed matters. The goal was just the second Wenger’s side have conceded at home since gameweek 19. Their next home game is a top of the table showdown with Man United, but not before next gameweek’s trip to Bolton.

Kenny’s Back Four Woes
The defensive injuries continued to rack up for Liverpool yesterday; Fabio Aurelio lasted just over 20 minutes before succumbing to a hamstring injury, the Brazilian being replaced by Jack Robinson at left-back. With John Flanagan in at right-back due to injuries to Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly, Dalglish’s full-backs had a combined age of just thirty five. The pair’s performance, though, suggested a bright future lies ahead.

Jamie Carragher was stretchered from the pitch after a sickening clash of heads with Flanagan saw him knocked unconscious and requiring oxygen. The Liverpool skipper declared himself absolutely fine after the game, providing some assurance to Dalglish ahead of the upcoming home games against Birmingham and Newcastle.

Carroll’s Okay
Andy Carroll came into the game in good confidence; not only had he grabbed a double to down Man City last Monday, he had found the net in his last visit to the Emirates while still at Newcastle. However, the January signing drew a blank as Liverpool set out to stifle Arsenal. Stretching for a ball in the opposition box, Carroll landed awkwardly and seemed to have jarred his knee, though according to Dalglish post-match, his withdrawal on 70 minutes was merely a precaution.

Dalglish Hails Team Spirit
Part of the reason Arsenal were unable to play their passing game was down to the performances of Jay Spearing and Lucas in the middle of the park. The pair chased and harried every ball and epitomised the work ethic instilled by Dalglish. Given the way this match had transpired, the Liverpool boss couldn’t contain his delight at his side’s performance yesterday:

”I don’t think there’s another team anywhere that would show the attitude and commitment we showed out there today.They went through a wee bit of adversity, losing Fabio Aurelio early on and putting a 17-year-old boy on at left-back. Losing the captain, having a right-back who’s only 18, losing a centre forward, losing a goal eight minutes into injury-time, and they still didn’t want to accept they were going to get nothing from the game.

I don’t think I can speak any higher than that. Everybody will be sat there tonight proud at having seen their team produce a performance like that with the attitude and commitment.”

So far, that’s wins over Man United, Chelsea, Man City and a draw at Arsenal since Kenny’s return. To counter that, however, there’s the losses at Blackpool, West Ham and West Brom. If Liverpool can find a consistency under Dalglish next term (providing, of course, he get the job as manager) they seem certain to be battling for one of the Champions League positions.

Sturridge a Big Miss
Bolton arrived at Wembley for their FA Cup semi final on the back of a 3-0 win over West Ham last week but it was telling that Daniel Sturridge, their one real form player, was cup-tied and resultantly missed out on the big day. Owen Coyle chose to play Ivan Klasnic in his place alongside Kevin Davies, with Johan Elmander continuing in a midfield role for the Trotters, as Marcos Alonso dropped out to be replaced by Paul Robinson at left-back.

Coyle, Before and After
Prior to the match, the Bolton boss was full of optimism:

”Both teams will be going out to win the match and both have good individual players and, collectively, very good teams. This is the best arena in world football and the players will want to go out an maximise the opportunity.”

Unfortunately for Coyle, only one set of players adhered to those comments.

After the rout, Coyle was determined to make amends and finish the campaign on a high, ahead of a run of fixtures that reads (ARS & ful, bla, SUN, blp, MCY). His words may prove re-assuring to any Fantasy Managers mulling over Bolton players with this week’s double gameweek in mind.

”What we don’t want is to have this impact our season because we’ve been terrific up to this point and they’ve earned their right to be here.We’ve played well below what we’re capable of, but we must pick ourselves up for the final six games of the season.We’re in a good position in the league and we want to finish strongly.”

Pulis’ Wing Wonders
Stoke assistant manager David Kemp said before the semi-final:

“Getting out wide is part of our plan, certainly. It is a big wide open pitch and we will look to use Jermaine Pennant and Matthew Etherington as much as possible.”

This plan proved fruitful, as the pair had a hand in two of Stoke’s first three goals, Etherington scoring the opener and Pennant laying on the third goal before half an hour had been played.

Jonathan Walters
We’d had our eye on him as a tip for Stoke’s forthcoming double gameweek prior to this game anyway, but his two-goal contribution will alert plenty to the merits of Jon Walters. His partnership with Kenwyne Jones has been flourishing of late and Walters has been the main beneficiary, returning two goals, two assists and 5 Bonus Points over his last three games for a total of 27 Fantasy Premier League points. Best part is he’s classified as a midfielder, comes in at just £5.5m and is owned by just 0.2% of Fantasy Managers. With a double gameweek (avl, WOL) up next before a trip to Blackpool the following week, expect that percentage to increase.

Robert Huth
The big centre-half continued his remarkable goalscoring season, grabbing his eighth goal in all competitions to put Stoke two nil up early on. Huth is the fourth-highest owned defender in FPL, featuring in 19% of all teams. The goal will surely see him flash on many a radar and his acquisition before the afore-mentioned double gameweek will surely be part of many Fantasy plans, despite Stoke chalking up just one clean sheet in their last ten games.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

          I am 29 points upfront. Its gonna be very difficult. He has Dawson and Hangeland at the back and Begovic on goal. There he has the edge. Also Young is his player that I don't have. Carroll too. I could copy him, but its not my style.

          I didn't captain Lamps cause I wasn't sure on Che formation. If I knew it he would have free role I would do it certainly. Carlo has changed 3 times in a row. If there was Diamond or Christmas tree formations it would be bad (not so good) to captain Lamps. He (Carlo) made good decision this weekend not like against Utd in the first leg. Then I was furious at him. He put Ramires to play on the wing, he never played there and Zhirkov on the opposite flank, never mind he hasn't played for 4 months. All that to partner Drogba and Torres. He understood the message. One of them needs to be on the bench. I liked and after when he brought Benayoun instead of Lamps. Benayoun best position is free role behind Torres. For this kind of stuff I admire Fergie. If Spain can put Fabregas on the bench and play Xavi we could do the same. England had the same problem with Gerrard - Lamps decisions too.

          Main point is that I didn't foreseen that Lamps will have that free role. But with this formation I might captain Lamps against W Ham, never mind he doesn't have good record against them.

          Cheers,

          P.S. My main fantasy man is Lamps yeah but I've learned that is not good to play FF with emotions and let them do the moves instead of you. That's why I am gonna bring my 4th Che player this week 😉 Certain loanee striker 🙂

            That's completely understandable. Good luck in the run in, and I am also looking at a certain loanee however i am conscious of how good fulhams defence can be. I also dont think Drogba & Torres can play together they are too similar.

    Almost last for previous article, almost first for this 🙂

    Early days, but what you guys think of these plans;

    a)
    coleman => huth
    ferguson => walters (-4)

    b)
    coleman => huth
    wellbeck => bobby z (-4)

    c)
    coleman => huth
    ferguson => o’hara (-4)

    I would like to have 2 dbg midfielders/forwards, but I think all of lamp, nani, vdv, adam, drog and rvp all undroppable, so point hit to take one of them out is not worth it. Alltough, if mu win newcastle this gw, then nani’s resting / cameo in eve match is a real worry…

    btw, you think getting huth in is worth it? Could play kolarov against blacburn. All rivals have huth, so it’s really scaring tought to go without him.

    cheers!

                I think never mind the league is won, he'll play surely. You want to celebrate the title with your home fans on the last day. That is the best feeling for a player. No chance that Fergie will persuade him to be on the bench. Its not points than is passion. Rooney plays that game. Bookmark it!!!

    Begovic
    Huth Luiz Djourou (Baines, Walker)
    Lampard Adam O'Hara Downing (Nani)
    Rooney RVP Carroll

        Share your pain, mate. I thought it couldn't get any worse than giving away a 2 goals lead against Spurs, but they proved me wrong against Newcastle. But this draw is even worse. Winning in the 98th min would have been a major boost for the run-in, now I pray we'll finish 3rd.

        I'd play Baines over Djourou. Wait on Nani news. Giving BLP's form, I'd bench Adam over Nani.

                That is the problem with Bent. He is not that cheep to be your third striker and he is not captaincy option, that's why I chose not to have him. Now when u have him, keep him. And regarding Kuyt he is hit and miss. On midterm u r never loosing with him, but u need him for a short punt which could be massive fail.

      Keeping Adam for the next two, we'll have a clearer idea about Nani v Everton after the Newcastle game. I suspect he will be on the bench v Newcastle (Tony V was withdrawn against City) and starting against Everton - but obviously this is kinda guesswork.

    2 green arrows in a row things are looking up 🙂 If only Arsenal coulda kept clean sheet yesterday would have been another 5 pts but I wont be greedy 😉
    Plan is to get rid of Nasri, Nani and Zigic for a 4 pt hit and get in Ethers(c), Dempsey and Zamora/Sturridge. Then the week after i will have enough funds to get in Rooney as Man U cover!

    Ive been ahead in my main league for the entire season, bar a week or two very early on. As of today, Im down by 1 point. 🙁

    Now theres another DGW coming, my squad before any transfers seems decent, but I have no DGWers. Thought Dempsey was obvious choice for Nasri, but then Id have a tough choice for who to bench. I also am worried about Mignolets spot as I have Myhill as 2nd keeper. Is Hennesey a good shout for the run in? Otherwise I could drop Carr or Simpson for a DGW defender but who?

    Team currently:

    Mignolet (Myhill)

    Luiz, Walker, Djourou

    Lampard, VDV, Nani, Adam

    Rooney, RVP, Gyan

    (Nasri, Carr, Simpson)

    Hi Guys

    Can you please help with this weeks transfer decision!

    My team is as follows:

    VDS, Mignolet
    Carr, Walker, Luiz, Hangeland, Coleman
    Nani, Nasri, Wilshere, Young, Adam
    RVP, Drogba, Saha

    I have 0.6m in the bank.

    I am proposing the following transfers for this week:

    IN: Jarvis, Zamora
    OUT: Wilshere, Saha

    I also could take out Nasri instead of Wilshere, to help free up more funds for transfers later on...

    Another idea i could do:

    IN: Jarvis, Dempsey
    OUT: Wilshere, Nasri

    Any thoughts please?!

    Lads I am in real mess regarding my transfers.

    I have 2 frees and I want to offload Nasri and Zigic for Walters/ Depmsey/ Ohara and Zamora/ Jones, Sturridge.

    The problem is if I make both of them means I don't know who to bench. It would be Nani or Adam which is very tough.

    The defense is other issue I have Foster at goal and I could use the second transfer for a goalie, but that means I will have to keep Zigic due to cash reasons. What to do?

    A: 4 point hit: Begovic, midfielder and striker in and bench Nani/Adam/ VDV
    B: Nasri and Myhill (I know I know) out
    C: Sturridge in and other transfer for a defender cause my defense is gonna be weak and (I am not gonna have cash for a goalie). Walker, Luiz and ....

    I really want Toure next GW so I could play on of the Coleman/ R.J,. this GW and sell Nasri for cash. Arhhh that Serbian it feels so bad to have him in your team.
    Suggestions and why? Sorry for the long post, but having 2 freebies is really difficult so many options out there.

    Ok,want to bring in a DGW player for next week, have one free transfer. Was thinking about ditching Odemwingie for either Zamora or Sturridge but he's in such good form and WBA have good fixtures, it seems daft. So thinking of losing Barton for maybe Duff( can't afford Dempsey) or Etherington although already have Stoke coverage with Huth. Pretty happy with my defence so not looking at a defender ATM. Anybody got any other suggestions? Thanks!

      I wouldn't worry about Tevez, but what about Balotelli? Just 7.9, will take penalties and played well against Utd. Dzeko has been dreadful so far for City, so there's every chance that he won't get back in the side this season, and Balotelli will be the spearhead of City's attack.

      They have some excellent fixtures coming up too.

            Think he will do well for you. Will have a look at him too, so much potential. Won't matter in FPL if it's branded the laziest hattrick ever as long as it's a hattrick.

          It is, but his record in all competitions for City has been consistently good, his goals/minutes ratio is right up there with the best.

          7.9 million for someone possibly leading the line for a top 4 club, with their fixtures, is an absolute bargain IMO.

            Personally I'm contemplating getting in Kolarov ( I miss him) and Johnson very soon. I see City doing well in their remaining fixtures.

              Yeah, I'll be having three City players, just not yet sure which ones...

              Johnson is an interesting shout, may have a look at him, but right now I'm trying to choose three from Kolarov, Silva, Yaya and Balotelli.

              Where were all the Kolarov haters after the Utd game anyway? I thought he was excellent.

                I rather have Lescott than Kolarov. Learned my lesson.

            I have fantasy rule. All of the players for my team needs to know to wear there shirt by them selves.

            but I think it's more a question of his attitude than his stats...you can't question his ability and he was excellent against Sunderland for no reward...but then he stank big-style against Liverpool...Mancini subbed the sub to humiliate him I thought

              Or he subbed him to rest him up for the final? Knowing that the game was up against Liverpool.... But I didn't see most of the game, so I can't know.

              But even if he was subbed to make a point, then it clearly worked, and his performance on Saturday should guarantee him starts in the next few.

                no he came on as sub for Tevez and was taken off with a couple of minutes to go I think...no hand shake or eye contact of course

    Is it worth an 8 point hit to do:

    Koscielny to Djourou
    Nasri to Lampard
    Saurez to Carroll ?

        That said, I'll most likely be captaining him this week - he always scores vs West Ham - but I don't think it's worth it now you've missed most of his good fixtures. Our fixtures after the West Ham game are nothing to get excited about.

    I'm up there in the cabinets to the top 4000 (so far this week).

    astonishingly, my Rival is so far catching up thanks mainly to Baines and Kuyt. I'm thinking of getting those 2 in for Bramble and Nasri if I can.

        It's not so bad because our teams are really different now. We used to have many players in common, now it's a mix.
