Stoke City soar into their double gameweek 34 fresh off the demolition of Bolton in last Sunday’s FA Semi Final. While it is possible they might be distracted by the subsequent Wembley date in May, their mid-table position still only finds them only 5 points clear of relegation, giving them little room for comfort just yet.

Their fixtures are at least favourable for Tony Pulis’ side – Stoke start the gameweek with a trip to face the erratic Aston Villa, before hosting cellar-dwelling Wolves. With tough final three fixtures in front of them, Pulis will be preparing for these two games, knowing full well that three or more points should guarantee their Premier League safety. That could be good news for Fantasy Managers looking to make some short-term recruitments from the Potteries.

The Prospects

Stoke’s home-away performance surpasses the standard Jekyll-Hyde expectations and has been magnified since the beginning of the year. At the Brittania, Stoke have an impressive four wins (EVE, BOL, SUN, and NEW) and two draws (WBA and CHE) since January 1, while they have failed to secure a single point on the road during this same period, losing seven away matches on the spin. Five of their seven clean sheets this season have come at home, with three clean sheets at the Britannia in the six home matches played this year.

A trip to Villa Park looks to be a stiffer test now than earlier in the season. Aston Villa have finally found some attacking form and have recently reinstated their experienced centre-back pairing of James Collins and Richard Dunne in front of veteran keeper Brad Friedel. Goals look certain when Villa are involved; you have to go all the way back to October for the last time they took part in a goalless draw, which, combined with Stoke’s away form, makes a clean sheet for the visitors highly unlikely. Tony Pulis’ side won the first meeting between the teams 2-1, but will go into this one as underdogs.

Stoke then return home to host Wolves in what should be their “bread and butter” fixture of the double gameweek. Wolves won the first meeting on opening day by a score of 2-1, but now sit bottom of the table. Mick McCarthy’s men have struggled badly on the road, losing twelve times and picking up a mere eight points all season.

Although it doesn’t always follow the “book” at this stage of the season, Stoke should score in both games, are likely to lose the first and win the second, and appear to have a chance to claim a clean sheet against Wolves.

The Likely Lads

The highest FPL scorer on the team is Robert Huth. The subject of previous Watchlist articles, Huth has supplemented Stoke’s meagre defensive returns with six goals and three assists in league play (with an additional three goals in the FA Cup competition). The German has also begun to receive greater notice from the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Point judges in the second half of the season, with 10 of his 12 Bonus coming since Boxing Day.

Owned by 9% of the FPL teams even after substantial sell-off in the past few months, Matt Etherington has to be considered a target. After a fiery first half of the season, Etherington has languished some since Boxing Day – there was a string of games starting in gameweek 19 that he failed to complete, followed by a period in February when he missed a few games entirely. The winger now appears to have put the niggling injuries behind and has played the full 90 in the last two league games and in the FA Semi Final. He is currently in strong from, having scored against Tottenham in Stoke’s last league match and snatched the opener against Bolton at the weekend. Although he is now sharing some free kick duties with Jermaine Pennant, Etherington seems likely to resume spot-kick responsibilities and comes at a reduced FPL price of 5.8.

While the secret is now out of the bag, Stoke’s “form” player is unquestionably Jonathan Walters. Classified as a midfielder in the FPL, Walters has been playing up in tandem with striker Kenwyne Jones. The Irish international has six league goals this season and eleven goals in all competitions. In his last three league outings, Walters has been sizzling, with two goals, two assists, and five Bonus points to his name. He looks a certainty for the Villa game and, barring injury, should hold a starting role over both fixtures. We will bring you a full Watchlist article on Walters tomorrow.

Cheeky Punts

At a price of 4.7, Ryan Shawcross is now more than 1.0 cheaper than Huth in the FPL game. With reasonable prospects for a clean sheet, Shawcross and/or goalkeeper Asmir Begovic may be worth a thought as less expensive entry points to the Stoke defence.
Kenwyne Jones has six league goals on the season, a disappointing tally given the anticipated synergy expected when he joined Stoke’s direct aerial attack. However, after a long dry spell, Jones found the net in the last league game before adding another this past weekend at Wembley.

      Why did you bring in Walters when you already have seven attackers with great fixtures? You deserve no help, I hope you do get it majorly wrong.

    ok serious point here, yes it's based on mere opinion but look at the logic behind it.
    rvp v lampard. rvp is di**ing on lampard for goals, squeaking past him for assists, and spit-roasting him for bonus points. 6 times in the last 10 games lampard has failed, rvp just the once. relative fixtures are pretty similar for goals this week, lampard's edges it on paper but it's also clear away games suit arsenal's attacking play. but in simplest terms the only thing lampard looks more likely to get is 1 clean sheet point, whoopee

              Last season Drogba and Malouda cleaned up at Stamford Bridge (Drogba scored twice in a 4-1 and didn't get any bonus. I was annoyed), I think Lampard got an assist after Drogba followed up one of his weak snap-shots.

              West Ham have actually got a very good record at the Bridge bar that.

                  this was discussed this am as well. Turns out lLampard scored about a million penalties in one match against westham two seasons ago...had to retake them all, but the final one counted. Other than that, his west ham stats are indeed unremarkable.

    adam appears a lock to start. looks like Im making nani my #1 sub, starting vdv, dempsey, lamps, adam, rooney, rvp and gyan.

    Is it too dangerous to start Nani, when you have these other options.

    or is it too dangerous to bench Nani, the reasons being obvious.

    Had planned on taking nani out next week already, thought i should get one more home start out of him, transfers have been made, hes staying in the squad regardless for this week, but perhaps the highest scorer in the game with no injuries to speak of and at home belongs on the bench considering.
    or I could just bench adam.

    opinions?

          well my reason was that he's a doubt, but the auto subs make that irrelevant anyway, unless he comes on for a cameo. But i'd bench carroll, as birmingham are pretty solid defensively, whereas young can be relied on for pens, or set pieces. However all carrol has is his big head.

      After reading the Bolton report from earlier, I have lost interest in their players part. with their fix.
      Only O Hara makes interest from WOL but he hasn't dome much of late.
      FUL represent the best defensive returns but I'm not sure now is the best time to be bringing in defenders.
      STK offer Walters and I am interested in him part. an OOP in form.

      That leaves me with a bit of a dilemna: 2 frees and a current midpark of Nasri Adam Lampard Young Lennon,

    Who Am I?
    I was born in Ipswich in 1968 and played for four English clubs. I played twice for my national team. I would be remembered for being a rapid and pretty skilful winger.

    Googling is neither big nor clever.

    Just watched the highlights again from last night. It's mad how divided opinion is on BAE. People either think he's one of the top LB's in the league, or total garbage. He's an odd player. His pass to Lennon for the pen was sublime though.

      I think he is alright. I'd put the left backs of the Premier League in this order (defensive attributes are more important to me than attacking. This season Evra and Cole haven't been at their best but I'd still say:
      Ashley Cole
      Evra
      Jose Enrique
      Leighton Baines
      BAE

          Enrique
          Baines
          Cole
          BAE
          Evra

    Am genuinely stumped this weekend and considering the following:

    A. Lampard -> Etherington & Carroll -> Drogba (4 point hit)
    or
    B. Carroll -> Zamora

    Team currently:

    Begovich, (Foster)
    Terry, Luiz, Walker, (Djourou), (Simpson)
    Nani, Adam, VDV, Nani, Lampard
    Rooney, VP, (Carroll)

    Also Beckford ->Sturridge worth 4 pts?

      Just don't go for Walters. You got 7 attacking players with great fixtures.

      Also, you don't need to do a four point hit this round. If I were you, I think I would roll a transfer over. You're very good set up for the next couple of weeks.

        I've got a very good feeling Walters is going to get 20 odd points. I need to bring him in and make him my captain, because I've not had as strong a feeling about a player for a long time.

        Sturridge looked absolutely brilliant vs West Ham in the highlights and could easily have had 3-4 goals, and I reckon he's going to score big this week, while Beckford will do little vs united.

        I know I have a good team currently but something inside of me is telling me that I have to get these two in if I want to break the top 100.

          Of course, you need to trust your instincts, but you need to base them on something. Why do you have such "strong a feeling" about Walters?

          If you're looking for an attacker, I guess Sturridge is the way to go, but he has tough fixtures, and I think there are better options in your team already.

          Going for only one of Walters or Sturridge is four points saved. I am not sure I would go for any of them, though.

          Btw, you need to cure your insomnia. I was here this night, and going to bed at 5 AM is, well...

            He's scored 13, 9 and 5 in his last 3 league games and got two goals in the cup at the weekend. One of the best form strikers in the league no doubt. Add to that that the 9 and 5 came vs Spurs and Chelsea. If he was a forward he would be on my watchlist for sure with two very favourable fixtures coming up. Add that to the fact that he's OOP, he offers such a brilliant opportunity IMO. Then he has Blackpool the week after so he'll most likely score big then.

            Sturridge has alright fixtures I reckon, Arsenal at home and Fulham away have scoring potential. Add to the fact he was missing at Wembley think his teammates might look to him to provide some inspiration. Then he has the three worst form teams in the league (bla, SUN, bpl) where the goals will continue to flow.

            I normally hate hits, I've only taken two all season and one was out of necessity of a late injury for Cahill in a DGW so don't take them lightly but I have a nagging voice telling me now is the time to go for it with these two. Ofc then I have a dilemma of who to bench though.

            And ye I know it's not good, I tried to get up earlish today so I got tired earlier to help me fit back into a slightly better sleeping pattern.

              Well, well.

              I wish there was some way I could convince you not to bring in Walters, but if you have decided for him, there's not much I can do. Have a look at some stats, though.

              I might be rambling, but if you look at his amount of shots per game, and also when they occur, one COULD say that the man has had a decent amount of luck over the last weeks.
              He often scores after the 75th minute, where players and goalkeepers might be tired. Also, his two goals in the FA Cup semi final came from deflections.

              I could easily be proven wrong, but I am at least not going for him. You have to decide.

              🙄

                As long as he keeps getting goals then it doesn't really matter, but I see where you're coming from there. It might be a bit of a punt, and it could go horribly wrong so I might continue to ponder this until tommorrow.

                Just for the record his goals in the league came on 8mins and 28 mins, while his assist vs Spurs was also first half. But I see your point, it could have have been luck. For me it's form which is hard to ignore.

                Thanks for the advice 🙂

              Zamora is short-term, if it was for the season I'd definitely go for Sturridge.

            If we assume 15-16 from the Cup game in his last 4 games he has 13, 9, 5, 15/16. And let's not forget those scores have all come against teams currently in the top half of the table. I dare you to find a more in form player, let alone someone who has a relitively easy DGW coming.

    Any transfer advice would be much appreciated. Team as it stands:
    Begovic (Foster)
    Walker Luiz Huth (Simpson, Jara)
    Lampard, Nani, Barton, A.Young, Nasri
    RVP Bent (Zigic)

    Thinking (2 free):
    a) Zigic & Nasri -> Zamora & Dempsey
    b) Zigic & Nasri & Barton -> Zamora, Demps, Ethers/Walters(4 point)
    c) Zigic & Nasri -> Sturridge, Dempsey
    d)Zigic & Nasri & Barton -> Sturridge, Demps, Ethers/Walters (4 point)

    Any decent? And who to (C)? Cheers!

    60 points ahead in my mini league and my rival has 3 fulham players and I have Huth + 2 free transfers.
    Harper (Foster)
    Kolarov Luiz Huth (Djourou, R.Johnson)
    Nani Nasri Vdv Lampard Adam
    Rvp Zigic (Odem)

    Thinking of doing 4 transfers this gw will be getting rid of one or two anyway as the gw's go on so its not like im going to be 'stuck with them'
    Harper --> Schwarzer
    Nani --> Etherington
    Nasri --> Demspey
    Zigic --> Zamora / Sturridge

    hard to decide between Zamora and Sturridge! Look like an okay plan? Cheers 🙂

      Schwarzer and Sturridge. Leave the others alone. Dont get dragged into dgw madness. Do not sell nani or I will shoot you

        I really want Dempsey for this gw though i think he will score big and I'd captain him! I mightnt bother getting ethers in and keep nani. Not sure if he will start all the up coming games though!

    What do people think of:
    Lampard -> Ethrington
    Hernandez -> Drogba

    4 point hit, pointless?

      you could just keep lamps and take jones for hernandez.

      covers both stoke and chelsea and avoids 4 pt hit.

      drogba bandwagon is being jumped on too easily...

        Yeah, you're right, i think i'll go for Zamora though, or i'll just keep Hernandez.

    Is S.E.B fit for this week? And raring to go!? Not too confident about him and I'd much prefer Zamora or sturridge, but I can't really transfer him out can I?

    Also does any one think it would be wise to take out odemwingie for Zamora, most likely for a 4point hit?

    Anyone else think K.Davies is the sort of player who will be desperate to pay back the fans for last week?

    Finally is begovic guaranteed to play both games?

    Sorry bit of an unjointed post but just wanted to get those thoughts down and see what you lot thought 😀

      i agree with the davies shout.

      got two transfers this wk to use and was going for davies for odemwingie and a fulham def for coleman.

      however bale injury uts a spanner in works for me...

    1st one is a definite no no, and i guess that means the 2nd one is a no no too because you can't afford it.
