Arsenal and Spurs go toe to toe in a game so thrillingly entertaining, many viewers snubbed El Clásico until the ninety minutes were through. When the dust settled, however, the Gunners had dropped another two points, letting slip a two goal lead that allowed Chelsea to overtake them in second place. The champions swept aside Birmingham with ease at Stamford Bridge, making it nine wins and two draws from their last twelve games as Carlo Ancelotti’s side finish the season just like they started. Too bad about the bit in the middle, then. Here’s the notes from last night’s action….

Carlo Keeps in Shape
Once again, Chelsea took to the field in a 4-3-3 formation, with the only change in personnel being Paulo Ferreira for the rested Branislav Ivanovic at right-back. This meant another start for Salomon Kalou wide right of a front three, with Fernando Torres joined by Nicolas Anelka on the bench as Didier Drogba kept his place as the focal point of the Blues’ attack. Torres did get twenty-odd minutes but failed to break his duck.

Wide Men In the Points
Salomon Kalou and Florent Malouda were the two “Cheeky Punts” identified in last week’s Scouting the Doubles piece on Chelsea, and both came good again last night. Of the six goals Ancelotti’s side scored over their double gameweek, four were shared by Kalou and Malouda. Add in an assist for Malouda and 5 Bonus Points, and the pair returned a combined Fantasy total of 38 points, despite both leaving the proceedings on 67 minutes against Birmingham.

Didier Drogba
The after-effects of malaria seem long-gone now; Drogba bustled and bullied his way through the Birmingham defence last night, picking up two assists as Chelsea put the game beyond their visitor’s reach before the half-hour mark. He also grabbed 2 Bonus Points, making it 5 from the gameweek and a 22 point haul for his Fantasy Owners. With a home game against West Ham up next, more of the same can be expected – if selected of course….

Chelsea Rotation on the Way

While Ancelotti will be delighted with Chelsea’s form, he indicated in his post-match comments that he is set to rotate his squad to keep things fresh when West Ham arrive at the Bridge.

“We have another tough game, so I can use some rotation to keep the players fresh. In this moment of the season, every game is difficult, it’s difficult to prepare and it’s difficult to stay in concentration. When one team needs a point to survive from relegation, they will do more than 100 per cent. For this we need to be ready.”

This could offer an opportunity to Torres of course, while Nicolas Anelka would also seem well placed to start. The Chelsea front three could be shuffled then, despite their recent run of form. Elsewhere the likes of Branislav Ivanovic, Yossi Benayoun and Yury Zhikov could all come into Ancelotti’s plans.

Big Eck Goes 4-5-1
Having started the previous three games, Kevin Phillips dropped to the bench, with Alex Hleb coming in for the Carling Cup winners, leaving Cameron Jerome to lead the line alone. Lee Bowyer was the only other change, making way for Keith Fahey. With one clean sheet on the road since gameweek 14, Birmingham were always unlikely to chalk up a shutout and with Chelsea in such bullish form, McLeish’s change in shape came to no avail.

The Blues sit five points above the drop zone and after a tricky trip to Liverpool this gameweek, face a run of games (WOL, new, FUL) that should, realistically, help seal their survival.

Birmingham Penalty Duties
Craig Gardner was thought to be Birmingham’s chief spot-kick taker but the midfielder was still on the field last night when McLeish’s side were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute. Up stepped Sebastian Larsson to not only spoil the Chelsea clean sheet, but cast doubt over Gardner’s penalty duties, much to the chagrin of his owners.

Harry’s 4-4-2 Opens the Game Up
Harry Redknapp sprung a selection surprise in the White Hart Lane showdown, dropping Aaron Lennon to the bench and shifting Rafael Van der Vaart wide right away from his favoured position in the hole, as Peter Crouch partnered Roman Pavlyuchenko up front. The 4-4-2, pitched against Arsenal’s 4-2-3-1, was the making of the match, as both teams threw caution to the wind in a brilliant end-to-end encounter.

In their race with Man City for Champions League qualification, this draw dents the hopes of Spurs, though, and despite three very favourable home games still to come, their matches on the road could barely be more difficult (WBA, che, BLP & mcy, liv, BIR), as they look to overhaul a two point deficit.

Rafael Van der Vaart
Second half substitutions saw him eventually move from the wing role to play behind a lone striker, but Van der Vaart’s movement caused Arsenal problems throughout, as he popped up all over the pitch to receive the ball. Two goals (granted, one was a penalty) and 3 Bonus Points were just reward for a performance that could have seen him grab more than just a double. Surprisingly, this was his first Bonus Points since gameweek 19.

Gareth Bale
Following two first-half heavy clashes with Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, Gareth Bale failed to turn out for the second forty five. Harry Redknapp moved to alleviate worry over his winger’s availability after the match:

“He shouldn’t be too bad. He got a knock but he’ll get plenty of them over the next few years. I think it was his knee.”

Bale owners will be crossing their fingers ahead of the weekend home clash against West Brom; with the Baggies chalking up one clean sheet all season, Spurs can be expected to attack from first minute to last.

Wilshere Drops Down
Arsene Wenger had recently hinted at concerns of burn-out for Jack Wilshere and, in the week the youngster picked up his PFA Young Player of the Year award, the Gunners boss chose to bench Wilshere, drafting in Alex Song in the heart of the midfield instead. Bacary Sagna returned at right-back for the hapless Emmanuel Eboue.

Gunners Midfield
Cesc Fabregas picked up another assist but, once again, failed to get amongst the goals. Fabregas has a mere three goals this season, whereas Theo Walcott’s opener was his eighth of this campaign. In addition, Walcott also has eight assists to his name, making him the best value Gunners midfielder. Samir Nasri’s early-season form has deserted him in recent months, reflected in the fact his goal was the Frenchman’s first his New Year’s Day. A look at the FPL points reveals that-somewhat surprisingly, with five gameweeks to go, Andrei Arshavin remains the top-scoring midfielder in the Arsenal ranks.

Robin Van Persie
Another game, another goal for the Dutchman. Since returning from injury in December, Van Persie has found the net in every away fixture he has played; this six-game run equals a record set by Didier Drogba. That’s fourteen goals in his last twelve appearances and, taking assists and Bonus Points into consideration, is a run that has seen Van Persie average nine FPL points per game.

Past DGW was a bit of disappointment.

    Team as is stands:
    Begovic/Kingson
Kelly, Roger J, Luiz, Walker, Djorou
    VDV, Nani, Adam, Fabs, Lamps
    RVP, Bent, Zigic

Thinking of bringing in O'Hara and Zamora for Zigic and Adam (seeing his is doubtful). Zigic desperately needs to go!
The question will be who to bench then from Bent/Nani/VDV. That will be tough.
Anyone have any better ideas or wanna talk me out of it. Would be for a 4 point hit. Sitting on a 100p lead in my mini league.

    Thanks.

When O’Hara scored his big points recently, I’m sure he was playing off the striker. Is he not in that position anymore?

hello! yes. Before Doyle was injured, O’Hara played “in the hole” if you like behind Doyle in a 4-5-1, with 2 central midfielders further behind him. This meant that he often picked the ball up 25/30 yrds from goal, getting into decent scoring positions. However, since Doyle has got injured, Wolves have played 2 up front (SEB, Fletcher) which has meant a more withdrawn role for O’Hara. However, he’s often on FKs, corners etc and as these are often the most likely routes to goal for Wolves, he still gets good opportunities for goals and assists. Hope this helps 🙂

Thanks trevjohnston, really helpful . What are your thoughts on Jarvis? Is he a better alternative to Ohara? His stats indicate that a double digit score over two games is highly likely. I like his upcoming fixtures as well and am considering him as a differential replacement for Adam for the final five games.

Lost (very quickly!) on the last post.

Could use a bit of advice on my transfers, really at a loss this week.

    Current team is

    Foster – Begovic
    Terry – Luiz – R Johnson – Walker – Simpson
    Nani – Lampard – Adam – Nasri – Barton
Van Persie – Rooney – Carroll

I want to keep Nasri for now because Bolton are shocking at keeping clean sheets, and I’m definitely of the opinion that Nani won’t start v Everton. Thinking:
    Nani > VDV
    Adam > Etherington

    Sensible moves?

I was thinking about doing Nasri to Etherington this week, obviously last night has got me thinking. Looking at the fixtures though I'm probably still going to go for it, after the double Stoke have Blackpool so no reason Etherington won't score well(ish) for the next 2 weeks. Right? 🙂

until this week! I'm clutching at straws I think. I'm going to get rid of him soon, probably for YAYA! Which will give me a considerable amount of money to upgrade Zamora to Drogba giving me Rooney/Drog/RVP up top

That's a tough one. I really don't know to be honest, I don't think I'm going to overload as the teams that have doubles aren't great. FYI I'm probably only going to have

      Begovic
Etherington (Stoke have Blackpool after the double)
      Zamora (c)

I didn't get Drogba because I didn't think he would start both games. Last time I made a choice based on that it was to captain Nani over Berbatov because I didn't think Berbatov would start both games.

He went on to score 5 goals that GW...

I'm not expecting Drogba to start this weekend but I can't justify taking him out. I'm prepared for him and Malouda being on the bench. I can see Torres and Anelka starting with Drogba coming on after 60 mins.

Now they're back in the title race, albeit slim chance, I just can't see how he can bench Drogba on current form, even if West Ham is an 'easy' game. They have nothing else to play for and it seems pretty clear that Carlo didn't make the decision to buy Torres.

well zamora v's sturridge is my dilemma, edging more to sturridge, and he's got a better run in after the double if ur not to bothered about getting rid,

as for the other def walters is being transferred in my team first, i'm thinking of dempsey as well as walters but not decided yet as i think he's been quiet recently

Walters if you want to take a risk, Dempsey if you dont

A bit unsure what to do now..

    Current squad read:

    Hart, Mignolet

    Kolorov, Luiz, Collocini, Huth, Djourou
    Nzogbia, Jarvis, Nasri, Adam, Kalou
    Drogba, Gyan, RVP

Not sure who to bench (besides Djourou)

I was going to lose Nasri but now i’m unsure and Kalou but Kalou starting the last two and Carlo not changing the team makes me think he is good for another week?

I can see Kalou being rested with Yossi coming in, not just because I am a Malouda owner, I think that he will start, he is the other form player in that team at the moment, had the same amount of shots on target to Fat Frank in the last 6 weeks before the game, and he had the goal before the DGW itself, but, it is impossible to predict of course this season.

It will be interesting to see what Carlo does with Torres now, he surely can't keep bringing him on like the forgotten hero, and will start him to give him a bit of confidence at some stage, West Ham seems like a good opportunity to do that, but the problem now is you have an in-form Drogba, who will throw a wobbler if he is benched on recent performances, so very tricky.

I would be surprised to see him change the front three entire, and where Drogba and Malouda have been the difference makers, I think there is one spot open for Torres/Yossi/Anelka/Kalou, but who knows!

Nasri owners, stick or twist? I am twisting for the simple reason of his output. That goal last nigth will now flatter to decieve when looking at stats and while he was lively for much of the game, he was lucky to score, Dawson interfered with Gomes' view and Gomes should of done better.

I am thinking Nasri OUT Etherington/Ya Ya Toure IN and Welbeck OUT Zamora IN for 4 points, agree/disagree? Thanks

I'm weighing up the same decision; as a Bolton fan I know all too well how poor we are at the back, a quick look at our goals conceded over the last 8 or so GWs will tell you that. Not to mention having just been demolished by Stoke, I don't fancy our chances AT ALL against Arsenal, so am leaning towards leaving Nasri in for now in case he plays a role in the potential thrashing.

It's funny you should say that, Bolton are always a team when I see one of my players up agaist them I think "oh, that will be tight, Bolton are hard to break down", but that really isn't the case? I think of Owen Coyle and think that he always produces solid teams, so you think Arsenal could do well there?

Nani has started Man Utd's last 4 matches (all comps), the only match he was 'rested' for was the away WHU game. He did not start the midweek CHE CL game. Both those games were in the first few days of April. Did he have any niggles that week?

    Their upcoming games are:
    EVE
    Schalke
    ARS
    Schalke
    CHE
    BLA
    BLP

What are everyone's thoughts on which games he will be preferred for? Will he be used in CL or EPL? Or both? I would really like to take a chance and trade him but I want some analysis to persuade me.

The fact that he played against Newcastle leads me to believe he won't make the 11 against Everton, what with the plethora of options they have on the wings at the minute. Probably followed by a start against Schalke; wouldn't feel confident guessing any further than that

Do you not think that Valencia and Park will be used in the CL though? Meaning he will be used in the EPL.

Personally I don't think it's going to be a distint PL/CL split in the starting choices. Ultimately all this is complete guesswork though.

no niggles as far as I know just tactical, with valencia and park on the wings they can play a very different game.
Not much point in trying to guess when he'll play though, however he's much more effective at old trafford and in the past I got the impression valencia was preferred in away games.

He played against CHE and ARS the first league games, and he was injured for the recent ARS FA Cup game.

There are 5 possible league games left for him, I'm trying to use past matches to figure out how many he is likely to play before I decide if I keep him.

I think SAF will put his strongest 11 eleven against EVE, as he will want the league won as soon as possible (10 points required for the title).

Valencia's been out all season though. Last season they were rotated a fair bit tactically, nani would start on the right in a 4-3-3/4-5-1 with valencia benched. Val would start on the right in a 4-4-2 with nani either on the left or benched. Bit different now though with roon/chico partnership.
If I had to guess I'd say nani will start on the left v everton with val on the right, and val and park will start v shalke

who are y'all captaining? I hit VDV on the poll and he's only got 1% :/ i think that will increase dramatically before sat. I have a choice between

    Bent
    Lamps
    VDV
    Jarvis

      I'm captaining Zamora.

Out of your choices I'd go for...Jarvis probably, with VDV a very close second.
