Bolton bounced back from last weekend’s FA Cup mauling to all but end Arsenal’s title hopes with a late 2-1 win at the Reebok. Daniel Sturridge took centre stage and put in a performance that boosted his burgeoning reputation, but Arsenal only had themselves to blame. Despite a saved Kevin Davies penalty, the Gunners could and should have come out on top, spurning several good second-half opportunities and although Robin Van Persie once again found the net, Arsene Wenger’s side now look like peripheral figures as United and Chelsea contest the title. Here’s the notes on yesterday’s game:

Bolton’s Reebok Run Continues
Yesterday’s result makes it five consecutive victories at the Reebok for Owen Coyle’s side and gives them the fourth best home record in the division; their haul of 35 points is bettered only by Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool, in a season that has seen them taste defeat just twice in front of their own supporters.

Unfortunately for the Trotters, just two wins on the road have proved their undoing in an otherwise impressive campaign. This midweek sees part two of the double gameweek 34 before the season finishes with (bla, SUN, blp, MCY). Buoyed by this result, Coyle will be looking to improve on his side’s abysmal away record, particularly with the above-mentioned trips still to come.

Daniel Sturridge
For perhaps the first time this season, Daniel Sturridge proved to be of real benefit to Chelsea. Our Scout Pick selection grabbed the opener and helped Bolton on their way to a win that leaves his parent club in pole position for second place, with Chelsea now leading Arsenal by three points and just four games left.

Seven goals and fourteen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points in nine games for Bolton have illustrated just what a prospect this youngster is, though credit must be given to Coyle; Sturridge seems to thrive in a 4-4-2 formation as part of the classic “big man, little man” up front partnership and the Bolton boss has even dropped Johan Elmander into central midfield to accommodate this. Question is, will he be shown the same amount of faith by Chelsea next season?

Fantasy investment may still come his way, although many may feel that, by missing Bolton’s double fixtures, the boat will have sailed. Sturridge has proven he can score against any opponent however, and another three to four goals before the season ends looks a possibility. The only concern would be an ankle injury that the striker appeared to suffer late on which saw him limp from the field. There’s little news on that this morning, but Sturridge could well be a doubt ahead of the midweek trip to Fulham.

Robin Van Persie
If there’s one man who can’t be accused of shirking their duties for Arsenal this season, it’s Van Persie. His equaliser broke a Premier League record for goals scored in consecutive away games (seven) but that will be of no consequence to the Dutchman, with his side looking odds-on to finish the season empty-handed.

Our other Scout Pick forward scored his 15th league goal of 2011 and given Arsenal have scored a total of 28 top-flight goals since the turn of the year, it’s an indication not just of how much Van Persie has contributed to the cause, but how little, in turn, his team mates have failed to match his output.

Wenger Accepts Blame
It’s one win in nine games in all competitions for Arsenal, a damning record that illustrates their inability to cope when it comes to the “business end” of the season. A couple of months back they were still in the hunt for four trophies; now their season has simply capitulated. A downbeat Arsene Wenger spoke of his frustration after the defeat:

”The players are not to blame. If somebody is to blame, it’s me. I pick the team. For me, the players had an outstanding attitude all season. If you can convince me that my principles are wrong then I’m ready to change, but I feel we try to play football the proper way.

That was one of the easiest run-ins we’ve had for a long time but we didn’t take our chances many times during the season. That’s frustrating because we feel the potential is there. We still lack maturity, experience, calmness in key situations.

We have not been stable enough defensively. We have conceded six goals this week – you cannot afford to concede six goals in three games in April if you want to win the championship. Defensively, we were too frail during the season.”

Wenger will surely move in the summer to address that defensive frailty. Gary Cahill, in opposition on Sunday, presented a rather convincing CV to the Arsenal boss with yet another determined and dominant display in the Boltoin backline. He would surely seem a likely target for Wenger.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

They might not add to the squad but I think he'll have a struggle to hold on to rvp and cesc in the summer - players of that quality want to win trophies

Cesc can go. He might be quality but his heart's not in it any longer - time to get rid and invest all that money (plus more). Most importantly though they need to change the system. For all he's done for the club, I can't see Wenger winning another trophy there.

Van Persie still loves it, he'll be club captain.

financial dilemma (though the kind we’d all love to have in real life, i suppose):

currently have 5.3 million in the bank already, team is:

    mignolet/al habsi
    kolarov/luiz/coleman/rj/walker
    nani/vdv/nasri/young/malouda
    sturridge/rvp/zamora

looking at transfers for this week, but the result is an even bigger bit of cash in the bank (been looking at:nani -> yaya and nasri -> silva, but also considering al-habsi -> reina/hart, kuyt for one of the midfield switches and balotelli in for zamora).

should i not worry about having 8 mil in the bank? should i take more hits for a gk switch? defender? striker?

thanks for answers to any of the above!

nasri sucks, nani could do well against arsenal but he may be rested. a better striker than zamora. a better keeper, yeah hart would be nice

Be careful what you wish for. It was funny at first when Chelsea got all that money and started playing Champ Manager but a couple of years down the line you've got c*nts like Terry thinking he's the mutt's nuts.

As much as I hate United, and I really do, I'd sooner see Chelsea and Citeh fail than a club like Arsenal who have built their club the 'correct' way on the financial side of things.

Actually that's a lie - I'd love to see United drop out of the the CL an do a Leeds.. especially under Fergie's watch.. not gonna happen though is it?

Tax avoidance is a different thing to tax evasion, and acquiring a company using debt laden companies is nothing new, so not going to happen.

The biggest threat is when they have to pay back the bonds to the investors who purchased them, and that's not until 2017. They'll probably just create some new debt to pay those off, as long as they're making the interest payments, the investors will be happy.

I'm having the same problem don't know who to get in. Balotelli's tempting coz of the double but the double fixtures really
aren't that great. I can see mancini going really defensive especially against spurs coz a draw is good enuff for them to qualify for CL!!

I might go for Suarez myself if Carrol's not fit as liverpool just can't stop scoring at Anfield right now and also it'll be a much easy captain choice this week!!

Yea good point on the spurs game. Just looked at the fixtures and i can see Liverpool scoring as many as City even though they have a game less. I do have Kuyt already though, who i'm thinking about captaining at the weekend.
Another thing that is swaying me to Balotelli is that it would allow me to upgrade Foster to Hart if Foster is injured

Its a dead leg. I think he'll be back in GW36. I got Schwarzer in this week for Harper anyway, so I can play him the rest of the season if necessary anyway.

I got Silva in this week as well. Nice matchup tonight and next week before the gw. Silva looks more likely to take Tevez's bonus points whilst he's out and I think most of City's attacks will go through him.

Balotelli is a good shout too. Yes, he's a hot head but he could also reward you handsomely over the run in. Get the feeling he could put W Ham to the sword at Eastlands next week.

I have a 77 pt lead over my mini league rival at the moment so I can afford to take a risk on a guy like Balotelli if need be.

The problem is that unless Yaya scores all he'll get you is 2 or 3 pts.

Silva can get you assists and boni's. I think if you can afford to pay the extra for Silva then do it.

All season he's been mealy mouthed and begrudging about us. The guy can't say anything good about us or our players. He rubbished Taarabt this weekend too.

Your boys will choke again in the playoffs anyway. You and Arsenal are both predictable in that respect.

Warnock is the best thing to happen to us in years. Wanted him when Holloway left as I always felt he was perfect for us. Everybody on the QPR messageboard laughed when I said that several years ago. I was proved right though!

Lots of vitriol here, not sure why. Jones admired QPR's resiliance after the game, saying that's why you were top of the league. Don't know what the Taarabt comments are, and I expect if he HAD actually rubbished him I'd have heard about them. Warnock has been very good for you, no question. The right man for the job and QPR deserve the title, which they probably wouldn't have if not for him.

Also, we've only been in the Champ playoffs once so fair play to you if you can draw a predictable conclusion from that single appearance.

Jones has been on Sky for several QPR games and he's never given us any credit at all. Its only after the games that he's usually forced to say something positive about us.

Just like most fans don't like 'Colin' you'll find that most Rangers fans don't like Jones based on the way he's talked about us all season.

Sorry, nothing personal against you my friend.

Jones' dour personality winds a lot of Cardiff fans up too, and there's plenty of interviews he's giving about his own players where people have felt he's not complimentary enough! So he's consistent.

He's just that kind of guy, and I like that- more managers should give withering responses to inane questions.

even wenger must understand the need for hard experience in central positions now, if not, if he keeps signing younglings, it will lead to a revolt among his first team players and fans

cahill and vermaelen in central defense

nasri, wilshere/song and somone like seedorf in central midfield maybe, and new winger

I wouldn't say hottest transfer targets.

They have spent gazillions, and over the odds for obtainable targets.

Kaka turned them down. Ronaldo went to Real. Those two were the hottest prospects on the market over the past couple of years.

They need to keep 1 of Fabs or Nasri, not sell both.

Personally, I'd sell Fabs to Barca. He wants to go there and he isn't a natural leader.

Arsene doesn't need to go, you really won't get a better quality manager than him to be honest. Mourinho won't go to Arsenal so, really, who else is there?

Wenger absolutely needs to buy Gary Cahill and build his defence around him. As the scout writer said above, Cahill gave the prefect audition yesterday. If I was Wenger I would have gone up to Cahill after the game and said, 'Son, I'm buying you in the summer!' I'd make him captain too.

They need a tough tackling midfielder too. I think they should go for Scott Parker when W Ham go down. They need someone who is going to organize the midfield. He's about the right size and height that Arsene likes them to be too!

But Mourinho won't go to Arsenal and they wouldn't pay him the kind of money he'd demand so no point thinking about it.

I understand Arsenal fans frustration at the manager but sometimes you have to look at it and ask yourself who would you replace him with if he left, and who realistically would you be able to get?

For all his faults and stubborness he's still one of the best managers in Europe, hands down.

You aren't that far away either. Even 3 players of the ilk that we've all been mentioning won't cost you the earth in transfer fees or wages and would dramatically change your fortunes.

Fire Wenger and there's no guarantee that the next man you get in is going to be better. And he could end up making you a damn sight worse.

scott parker and gary cahill would be good signings for them imo, maybe add a proven experienced winner too, like seedorf or pirlo or somone like that, that could keep their heads cool in crucial cl and pl games

they also need a backup for rvp, a guy like inters milito also add good experience and coolness

Masch is exactly the kind of player they need, Giggsy. A no nonsense midfielder devoid of skill but with the ability to boss midfield and do the dirty work for the skill players.

Given is a good shout too and its fairly academic that their defence positively screams for Gary Cahill to be put into it.

Like I said, Masch is the KIND OF PLAYER that they need. Doesn't have to be Mascherano but it needs to be a similar type of player.

Like I said above, Scott Parker isn't going to be playing Championship football next season. Wenger could do an awful lot worse. A midfield of him and Wilshere could be their best CMF pairing since Vierra and Pettit.

      good morning

holding on to 1st place in my mini-league, got some seperation this week, after 2nd place has steadily gained ground recently.

So wondering if i should make a move this week to help ease his approach. Hes been playing Odemwingie for several weeks and hes killing me. Id hate to chase points, but I could bring him in for gyan this week and WBA home to villa is not a bad matchup.

so I guess Im asking, even if I missed the train, is it wise to bring in odemwingie based on my situation? He has sturridge as well. I think Id rather have odemwingie but Im not sure.

also if i bring in someone for gyan, Id have to bench one of nani or dempsey in all likelihood. Better to take out one of those mids for yaya and just bench gyan?

Yeah, the latter option looks better considering Yaya's fixtures.I would do that, although if you want to take a punt on Odem,it's up to you. He's the most in-form striker atm.Funny how he did f*ck all when I bought him at the start of the season.

happy green arrow to you sir.

i dont know if im leaning toward dropping nani because of recent form/rotation risk or that Im too stubborn to concede that I brought in Dempsey for the DGW and am not sure I want him for the run in.

Thanks, mate. It's a tough decision.Dropping Nani is always a big risk but lately it has been turning out well for many players, including me.I sold him this week, not because I wanted to but because of budget constraints on the potential transfers.Thankfully,he did nothing against Everton.I think it's your choice again but I would sell Nani only if I'm forced to or if I'm assured he has lost his starting place,Dempsey is a good player but he's no Nani.

dempsey does have another 90 minutes to prove something/get crocked, to shape my decision. Nani has been the workhorse for the majority of the season. I could see him benched for the weekend, and if they clinch the season against chelsea the following week, i could certainly see him resting again in one of the remaining games.

Yeah that's true,Nani is a huge rotarisk. In that case, sell him but like I said it's a big gamble and if he starts you'll have to watch the rest of United's games from behind the couch like I did on the weekend.

P.S.:I wish Dempsey goes mental as well on Wednesday,he's my captain!

In terms of odem I got rid of this week and sure he scored but I'm feeling a couple of 2 pointers back to back for him - he's no rvp and I think you'll regret bringing in.

thats just it, while my overall score may suffer if he puts up 2's, at least its insurance against my rival, right? with 1 free transfer and 0.0 in the bank it would take a hit to get a bent or drogba in or even balotelli, have rvp and rooney, who else should be considered? Carroll, maybe if declared fit.

is lescott in favor of kolarov because of less risk of not starting? was wondering myself if it would be worth the extra cash to get a nailed on defender.

yeah, lescott nailed on starter, had enough of kolarov earlier this season, very frustrating player in terms of rotation, early subs and set pieces leading to nothing

I am going to wait and see how they look tonight. Silva and Johnson are the type of players to get dropped in away games. Yaya seems the safest bet and without Tevez his attacking prowess is again looking vital.

blp, new, FUL, WIG. Ok fair enough, thats not a bad set of fixtures. My point was more to do with City defenders being a better way into their games than their attacking players.

I've finally got both Lampard and Fabregas in my side, same as you, so I'm not sure I could bear to ditch one now

But who? Kolarov who has been a disaster most weeks. Hart? Or someone else. Other than Hart (is he injured?) they've had too many to choose from, meaning whoever you have may not play.

will be interesting to see how arsenal react to being hooked off the title race, if it will free them from pressure and up their game, or if it will leave them uninspired and on autopilot

if it is the first, fabs could still get you big returns, but really dont know..

I think if they lose to united then they'll fold like a house of cards- if they win or draw it could be different.

question for the veterans here, first thank you for advice this season. knowledge ive gained has been appreciated, and will certainly pay it forward in the coming years whenever I can. So Im currently 9k overall. With only a few GWs left, whats a realistic goal, is top 1k out of reach? or is top 5k more suitable?

depends on your team and if u gamble or not

i havent had any utd spurs or man city players for a few weeks now and its worked ok, could have gone the other way tho

i figured with such little time left that i would be virtually mathematically prevented from finishing only so high. Its not like Im gonna have a week like the guy who captained Maxi. All of my players are pretty much owned by alot of managers ahead of me.

climbing in the top 10k area is quite hard if you go with the mainstream transfer policy in my experience, but on the other hand, if you go too smart on it, a downfall is very likely aswell

i ignored this dgw pretty much and did no transfers, paid off good so far, but dont look forward to those midweek fixtures which could eat my advantage all up

got 2 freebees now to prepare for this and next gw, maybe balotelli(c) instead of a yaya/silva transfer could be kind of a punt for me, we shall see...

i really want balotelli and would captain him but i just cant see who i can get rid of as suarez has nice fixtures, sturridge is on form and so is rvp

my problem too, much easier to ship out a midfielder or two for city coverage as my frontline looks strong enough

Top 5K most probably. You'd have to make up 60 points to get top 1K.

Top 1k is about 1965 points - making 70 points up is pretty unlikely but no harm in trying a couple of punts to see if you can make it. Top 10k is still a pretty impressive achievement though

By the way in combination with a job promotion/security and gratitude for everyone who puts into this site, next season I will be able to finally fork over some cash and become a member. Im ready to feast my eyes on all the content my miserly ass has yet to see.

the thing is Fuzzy, a gamble is always a gamble. if it pays off you will rise a lot of places; more than likely it doesnt pay off and you might drop a bit.
going in to the last gw of last season i was around 1500 and took a bit of a gamble to push for the top1000, it didnt pay off and I dropped to c2500.
depends on how precious you are about finishing in a reasonable position.

i think i will gamble more on armband choice rather than differential players.

You are only 30 points behind me and i am top 4k so a good captain choice and that's gone. Good luck.

I dont see who Id give the armband to other than lamps this week.
