Bolton bounced back from last weekend’s FA Cup mauling to all but end Arsenal’s title hopes with a late 2-1 win at the Reebok. Daniel Sturridge took centre stage and put in a performance that boosted his burgeoning reputation, but Arsenal only had themselves to blame. Despite a saved Kevin Davies penalty, the Gunners could and should have come out on top, spurning several good second-half opportunities and although Robin Van Persie once again found the net, Arsene Wenger’s side now look like peripheral figures as United and Chelsea contest the title. Here’s the notes on yesterday’s game:

Bolton’s Reebok Run Continues
Yesterday’s result makes it five consecutive victories at the Reebok for Owen Coyle’s side and gives them the fourth best home record in the division; their haul of 35 points is bettered only by Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool, in a season that has seen them taste defeat just twice in front of their own supporters.

Unfortunately for the Trotters, just two wins on the road have proved their undoing in an otherwise impressive campaign. This midweek sees part two of the double gameweek 34 before the season finishes with (bla, SUN, blp, MCY). Buoyed by this result, Coyle will be looking to improve on his side’s abysmal away record, particularly with the above-mentioned trips still to come.

Daniel Sturridge
For perhaps the first time this season, Daniel Sturridge proved to be of real benefit to Chelsea. Our Scout Pick selection grabbed the opener and helped Bolton on their way to a win that leaves his parent club in pole position for second place, with Chelsea now leading Arsenal by three points and just four games left.

Seven goals and fourteen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points in nine games for Bolton have illustrated just what a prospect this youngster is, though credit must be given to Coyle; Sturridge seems to thrive in a 4-4-2 formation as part of the classic “big man, little man” up front partnership and the Bolton boss has even dropped Johan Elmander into central midfield to accommodate this. Question is, will he be shown the same amount of faith by Chelsea next season?

Fantasy investment may still come his way, although many may feel that, by missing Bolton’s double fixtures, the boat will have sailed. Sturridge has proven he can score against any opponent however, and another three to four goals before the season ends looks a possibility. The only concern would be an ankle injury that the striker appeared to suffer late on which saw him limp from the field. There’s little news on that this morning, but Sturridge could well be a doubt ahead of the midweek trip to Fulham.

Robin Van Persie
If there’s one man who can’t be accused of shirking their duties for Arsenal this season, it’s Van Persie. His equaliser broke a Premier League record for goals scored in consecutive away games (seven) but that will be of no consequence to the Dutchman, with his side looking odds-on to finish the season empty-handed.

Our other Scout Pick forward scored his 15th league goal of 2011 and given Arsenal have scored a total of 28 top-flight goals since the turn of the year, it’s an indication not just of how much Van Persie has contributed to the cause, but how little, in turn, his team mates have failed to match his output.

Wenger Accepts Blame
It’s one win in nine games in all competitions for Arsenal, a damning record that illustrates their inability to cope when it comes to the “business end” of the season. A couple of months back they were still in the hunt for four trophies; now their season has simply capitulated. A downbeat Arsene Wenger spoke of his frustration after the defeat:

”The players are not to blame. If somebody is to blame, it’s me. I pick the team. For me, the players had an outstanding attitude all season. If you can convince me that my principles are wrong then I’m ready to change, but I feel we try to play football the proper way.

That was one of the easiest run-ins we’ve had for a long time but we didn’t take our chances many times during the season. That’s frustrating because we feel the potential is there. We still lack maturity, experience, calmness in key situations.

We have not been stable enough defensively. We have conceded six goals this week – you cannot afford to concede six goals in three games in April if you want to win the championship. Defensively, we were too frail during the season.”

Wenger will surely move in the summer to address that defensive frailty. Gary Cahill, in opposition on Sunday, presented a rather convincing CV to the Arsenal boss with yet another determined and dominant display in the Boltoin backline. He would surely seem a likely target for Wenger.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Wait until the midweek games are finished as Sturridge is a doubt & Nani or Zamora could get injured.

wish i could pay 10.9 to have sturridge and odem in one spot.

id definitely do option 2. a nani headache is better than a zamora migraine. WBA have 2 of next at home, opposite for bolton, though one of those away affairs is blackpool. coin toss for me, same form, same price, same strength of fixtures for the most part.

silva should play most of it, but could get early subbed or even benched if mancini in a game decides to play balotelli, dzeko and johnson in his front 3, but would back silva to start the rest of games

Fair enough - IMO I don't think Dalglish will rely Carroll the same way Newcastle had to.
I also don't think Suarez will be happy to play deeper and not be in the limelight when it comes to scoring.
I may go for Suarez this week - I think he's due a goal.

This is the thing for me about FPL and something my brother for one never grasps.
IMO you've got to find the point where a run of form stops and a run of form starts.
Anyone can latch onto Odem right now but as we know that consistency will stop somewhere - it's inevitable.
The fact that Suarez is off the radar means IMO he's likely to go back on it eventually.
            Odem won't score every game.
It was the same with Walters this week - fair enough he had a goal disallowed but as the saying goes form is temporary.
By rights, Rooney - Torres - Drogba et all should score every game - it just doesn't happen.
For this reason, as well as the fact Liverpool have been awesome under Dalglish at home - I'd say Suarez.

That is a pretty sound arguement alright. I just think the way Liverpool are playing at the moment means that the spoils are spread out ecah week between Maxi, Kuyt, Meireles and now Carroll. Dalglish has done an amazing job and they are playing as a team but when it comes to returns i just don't see them.

Odem is playing a team with newly found confidence with Hodgson and Odem is seriously undervalued at the mo althogh i have 12,8 to spend on a striker.

+1 and odem is on pens. it's a more than valid argument. liverpool win 5-0 and suarez gets 6 😆
if west brom won 5-0* odemwingie would get about 20.

*realises west brom wont win 5-0...they always concede

You're right - certainly more ways the spoils can go at Liverpool but if Odem is out of a game IMO there's little opportunity for him to get involved.
With so much resource at Liverpool this is where more opportunities come up.
Never saw the goals but was there any reason Suarez couldn't have been in the same place as Maxi on Saturday? i.e. on another day could Suarez have had the hat trick?

Easily. Maxi played well but it was more a case of right place right time. Whilst Suarez didn't directly assist two of maxi's goals, he had a hand in both and helped for the Kuyt goal.

balotelli must be regarded a risky punt but with big point potential

          suarez is the safe bet

i am going for balotelli if i decide to bring in a new striker instead of a city midfielder

Had Bent for a few weeks now and he has returned ok, will keep him for two more gw probably

Odemwingie is a beast, never had him, and he annoys me just as much as kuyt, best value for money if that is an issue

in rooney you at least got a captain option and he will most probably return most points if price is not an issue, and he has performed well against the top clubs lately, plus last two fixtures looks promising

darren bent is the best baiter in the premier league. he fools me every time. bonus points and assists are HUGE for a striker. a goal every other game for bent may should be good when he's sitting there with 19 at the end of the season but it's just 3 ppg. the most frustrating part of owning bent: you know that a 2nd goal will be worth 7 points. "1 goal? rubbish darren. oh you got a second? well that changes everything have 3bps because you're clearly now MOTM"

Yep, it's frustrating. Especially when he's been wrongly disallowed two goals in the last three weeks.

His goals/baps ratio must be the worst in the league, aside from maybe Timmy Cahill.

Might be an odd question, but it makes sense, at to me....

For next week, which two would you prefer out of these three? Lampard, Fabregas, Balotelli.

I have Lampard and Cesc at the moment, and will definitely be bringing Balotelli in for week 36. I'm just wondering whether it's worth bringing the transfer forward a week and losing one of Lampard/Fabregas for Silva in order to afford Balotelli.

You can quote me on that.

Dembele, who has to go after this double. Keeping Lampard over Fabregas seems like the most logical solution, especially when I already have RVP for Arsenal coverage, but for some reason I'm loathe to get rid of Cesc.

I see Cesc involved in a tight game against Man U, whereas Lampard's game against Spurs could have goals in it imo.

I am even contemplating selling RVP to bring in Balotelli.

The only issue with Balotelli is whether Tevez will be back for the DGW.

Well, yeah. But that's for a later date. Quite possibly making three transfers this week.

        Dembele > Balotelli
Fabregas & Wilshere > 14.2 million midfield combo

That combo is either going to be Silva and N'Zogbia, or Yaya/Johnson and someone more expensive.

Next season FPL have to re-word how assists are given.
The easiest way to get around this is how I remember The Telegraph did it by calling it a "key contribution".

Yeah, cos 'key contribution' is totally unambiguous 😉

Only totally unambiguous way is to say 'if an attacker has the last touch, it's his assist. If not, it's not.'

And even that wouldn't help if it's not clear if the attacker did touch it....

I think I'm going to make one bold move this week.
Transferring out RVP and bringing in Suarez (c)and don't want to lose Torres now. I've had him since the Chelsea - Blackpool game on 7 March.

Need to go into the minsdset of chasing a lead.

I have made a very similar decision. I will probably have a 40+ lead after this week and had been considering a defensive move. However, now I am going to do RVP to Balotelli/Suarez even though my closest rival has RVP.

All this defensive stuff has definitely not helped my scoring over the last few weeks. No more!

To those who are thinking of bringing in Balotelli I think that is a mistake. Mancini clearly said two important things that make Balo not worth it. First he said that 'if' Tevez is to play in the final he must play one game before to be considered 'fit' and secondly he said that he is confident Tevez will play. So with the final on the 14th the only game before that is on the 10th against Totts (the second game of the double) so to me he seems a huge gamble while players like Odem and Sturidge are in ripping form and are being over looked because of their price.

I agree with you that he 'could' ply both together but why would he if Johnson is now fit and honestly going down that rabbit hole is just not worth it imo with just 4/5 games to go,plus when last did Balo do anything useful to show some kind of form?

Ab you are certainly correct about Johnson. What do you reckon his playing time will be? Surely a regular starter after Mancini's words about their attacking threat being better with him in the side?

he broke back into the side even before tevez got injured. balotelli and swp are his only competition for the right wing spot as far as i'm aware so surely now tevez is injured and balotelli has moved inside then it's just swp as competition?
johnson also benefited from his first game back being man city's most rampant performance of the season, a game where tevez, balotelli, johnson and silva all played in the same side.
basically i don't get why 95% of people are getting yaya when adam johnson is the same price, i thought it would be more 50-50 with yaya toure being the safe option due to a more secure starting role (fair enough, this late in the season probably isn't a time to take risks), i personally though would always back johnson to score and assist more than yaya toure.

Thing about having Balotelli and Johnson, is that you're royally f*cked if Tevez comes back earlier than anticipated.

yep that's the risk having both, at least one should start with tevez back but with a great fixture after the dgw it would be nice to know that you'll get a start there too.

They were talking about the luck factor and how you can play near perfect and still not finish in the top 1k and this bloked chimed in with his back to back top 100's. Needless to say he's of the opinion that luck is minimal 😛

Why are people rushing to buy Man City defs for the dgw?

I think they'll do well to keep a cleanie in either game.

I'd buy their mids or Balotelli instead. Kolarov is a joke and as long as he is in the side I think they have defensive issues. Balotelli at least is on pens and is capable of scoring in the prem, unlike Dzeko.

"Why are people rushing to buy Man City defs for the dgw?"

because they have one of the best defences in the league, and often play for 0-0s against better sides.

      "Kolarov is a joke"

He's got great attacking potential and plays for one of the best defences in the league.
