In the final match of gameweek 34, Bolton took their dreadful form on the road to Craven Cottage, a ground that’s virtually a fortress under Mark Hughes. There was only ever going to be one winner here, and so it proved; a Clint Dempsey brace eased any lingering relegation doubts for Fulham as they ran out emphatic winners, while the American’s Fantasy owners enjoyed an evening that transformed a decent gameweek into a great one. Here’s the lowdown on last night’s events…

Clint Dempsey
Dempsey’s double took his goals tally to 12 this season, and was duly awarded 3 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points for his display. Given that Fulham’s three forwards have managed nine between them, Dempsey’s importance to this side cannot be downplayed. Surprisingly, this was the first time he had found the net at home since gameweek 22, back in January, and the 16 point haul means he’s now the fourth-highest scoring FPL midfielder. Top of our Captain Poll going into the gameweek, those who handed Dempsey the FPL armband were delivered rich rewards for their foresight.

Dempsey, who will travel to face the obliging Sunderland defence at the weekend, was understandably delighted with his showing…

“I was fired up to get goals because I haven’t scored in three games..I was starting to get the itch a little and feel the pressure to perform, so it was good that I was able to do that tonight and help be a part of the team’s success in getting the three points to get us into the top half of the table.”

Fulham Prevail Despite Injuries
With Damian Duff missing the double gameweek completely due to an Achilles problem and Bobby Zamora still feeling his way back to fitness, Fulham could have been expected to struggle for goals last night but Craven Cottage seems to add an extra edge to their play; it’s six wins and one draw from seven, with six clean sheets thrown in for good measure. Mark Hughes can surely relax now; with 42 points Fulham should be safe, though with (sun, LIV, bir, ARS) left to come, the home record will be put under further scrutiny.

Bolton’s Away Day Blues Continue
Daniel Sturridge failed to recover from an ankle knock sustained in the weekend win over Arsenal, forcing Owen Coyle to start Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander together up front for the first time since gameweek 25. Bolton arrived in good spirit after beating Arsenal to banish those FA Cup Semi Final blues, but gave a toothless performance here. Sturridge’s loss didn’t help, though it’s worth noting that he had failed to score in his last two away games.

Bolton have one point from their last nine games on the road and though with their next three fixtures all definitely winnable, Coyle will be calling on his troops for another morale-boosting performance after another forgettable display away from the Reebok.

Trotters Limping Towards Ewood Clash
In addition to the ankle injury carried by Sturridge, Bolton also lost Mark Davies prior to the game with his own ankle problems. Gretar Steinsson then turned his knee during last night’s match and was forced off on 67 minutes. He will go into the weekend clash at Blackburn as a doubt along with Sturridge and Davies.

Currently playing around with having the following team for this week:
    Foster
    Johnson, Kolorov/Lescott, Luiz
    Walters, Adam, Fabs, Lampard, Yaya
    Suarez, RVP

    Bench: Hernandez, Huth, Walker

Bench right? Cant decide whether I should play Huth for his potential goals even though I dont think he will keep a CS.

Sorry this was on the bottom of the last page but I'm desperate.

I’ve had a nightmare two DGW and fallen from top 4,000 to top 10,000 and had my mini league lead cut from 100 points to 20 all because of Malouda and Dempsey for him and bloomin Zamora for me.

I got rid of Odemwingie and captained Zamora for a two point return meanwhile he’s captained Malouda for the last two and had Dempsey.

    My team is:

    Foster El Habsi
    Luiz Bardsley Walker Coleman Smalling
    Lampard Nani Nasri Adam Downing
    RVP Carroll Zamora

I have 4.3m in the bank, please help save my promising season from catastrophe. I’m distraught and can't see a way out.

Nasri OUT Ya Ya Toure IN
      Zamora OUT Suarez IN
Carroll OUT Odemwingie IN (for 8 pointer)

You are getting a DGW player, and a player who I think could rip it up this week in Suarez, every game I have seen him play now he has come very close to scoring in everyone, and now Liverpool are imperious at home. I would be worried about Carroll if he doesn't make this week, he might be a doubt next week, or might not of course, I understand he is close, but with only 4 GW's left, and Odemwingie in blistering form and facing a shaky Villa side, I would be tempted by the hit, wait and see what news is on Carroll.

I know the feeling, I was at 7,000th on Tuesday night and was 12,000th last night, been a bad week despite scoring a respectable 69, but onwards and upwards.

      Play:

      Foster
      Luiz/Coleman/Walker
      Lampard/Nani/Ya Ya/Adam
      RVP/Suarez/Odemwingie (Carroll)

Captain choices are good with Suarez, Lampard and Nani all jumping out.

You could do some changing in your defence, but not much point this week in my opinion, Smalling may not play at the weekend, and if he does I still fancy Arsenal to score, Sunderland defence is a nightmare, maybe look at Kolarov or Lescott IN the following week.

        Thanks for that, very comprehensive.

I'm loathe to get Odemwingie back as just got rid and after having him as a bench warmer for the last four weeks. Stupid stupid stupid.

Was thinking of just trying to pair up on my opponents top scorers, i.e. getting Malouda in for Downing or something like that.

Hmmmm, the more I think about these the worse the decision I normally make.

Have folded to popular opinion and done Zamora OUT Odemwingie IN - hardly the most inspired transfer of the week, team is:

    Foster
    Carr/Luiz/Huth
    Adam/VDV/Malouda/Ya Ya
    Odemwingie/Rooney(C)/RVP

    Begovic/Terry/Young/Walker

2.4 in the bank, open to a hit, but not sure I really need to, also, I had Terry in there too, but do believe Spurs will score now and Luiz is that bit more of a goal threat, thoughts chaps?

Yup, just one goal at SB in the league in the past four seasons. Add to that the fact that Spurs aren't playing particularly well of late, struggling to score as well, and a Chelsea clean sheet at the weekend isn't particularly unlikely IMO.

Fair enough, but before that they were really struggling in front of goal, and haven't actually scored that many goals in total this season - contrary to what most people would probably imagine.

you're probably right - terry is a better choice than huth statistically - but, i have this real feeling about huth vs blackpool. He will get involved for sure and blackpool's defence is about as useful as a grandad's nipples.

I just don't like playing a defender who I'm almost certain will concede*, irrespective of his attacking threat. I try to avoid it at all costs, probably irrationally so.

Johnny, I've got the same dilemma and thinking of playing Huth over Terry too.

It's that goal threat that Huth carries, plus Blackpool not quite in the form of earlier in the season. I can't see Spurs not scoring either and I'll be playing VdV against Luiz as it is.

I take your point that Spurs haven't scored at the Bridge of late JP, but I think you are evaluating their chances with a certain degree of unavoidable bias? VDV loves the big games, he didn't get to play Chelsea earlier in the season through injury, and this is one of those important games for both clubs where both need the win, I think VDV will step up and score to be honest.

At least if they do keep a cleanie I will have Luiz bringing in the points.

That last line isn't relevant though, it's a continuation of the myth about how you shouldn't double up on defenders.

I've explained it above, but in general I don't like playing defenders purely for their attacking threat. More often than not you get absolutely nothing from doing so. Terry obviously isn't guaranteed to keep a clean sheet - I don't think I'm being particularly biased here to be honest - but I'd much rather play him than someone who I know isn't going to keep a clean sheet.

But that's just me. Each man to his own! You'll probably strike lucky and Huth will score in 2-1 defeat and end up with about 10 points. 😉

No team, home or away, has kept a clean sheet at Blackpool this season in the league.

Plus Blackpool absolutely have to win, showed some decent form last weekend against Newcastle, and Stoke played in midweek (Pulis has been talking about has players being fatigued too).

                  Blackpool 3-1 Stoke.

So there's a record to be broken then.

I'm not saying Huth is going to keep a clean sheet, more that he's likely to score than Terry. I don't see either team keeping a clean sheet.

Picking clean sheets at this time of the season is hard so an attacking defender is never a bad idea. Few attack better than Huth this season and Blackpool can't defend.

                    Is all I'm saying.

I agree he's more likely to score than Terry, and to an extent that clean sheets are hard to predict at this stage of the season. But they're much easy to predict than defender goals are, that's for sure!

With Man City having the FA Cup final a few days after their game with Spurs, plus the fact that Everton are in great form at home, I'm not really seeing City's DGW as being all that.

They do have 2 very good games vs West Ham + Stoke which could be big wins, but they then finish away to Bolton who are on form at home.

I'm thinking City's run in isn't as great as it first appears.

Zamora was as spritely as a kid when he came on and his enthusiasm earned him a deserved yellow.

And like Jose (v Barca last night), I feel really ripped off. Ripped-off by Sparky!

He obviously plays the FPL and decided to earn double points from his captain Dempsey so played him upfront! Scum!

I'm seeing Liverpool players as a 1 GW only move.

Liverpool are in great form, especially at Anfield, but Fulham away I think will be very tough and can see a low scoring game such as 0-0.

Spurs will be a crunch game and then the final game of the season maybe a formality for both teams.

My 'definite' plan of booting out Dempsey and bringing in Silva seems less convincing now, what with Dempsey on fire last night (and Sunderland up next) and Sturridge an injury doubt.

    Can anyone help?

    Front 8:
    Fabs, vdv, Dempsey, Adam, O’Hara
    RVP, Sturridge, Bent

    Should I
    1) Dempsey -> Silva, bench O’Hara
    2) Fabs -> Silva, bench O’Hara
    3) O’Hara -> Yaya, bench Sturridge

Any other ideas? (Maybe bringing in Odem for Sturridge in addition to one of the above?)

as i said below, unless sturridge's injury is serious (?) keep him imo... Either of the other transfers look good, depsnding how you plan to spend fabs extra money.

What do you think on Dempsey? A one-off performance, or likely to repeat away at Sunderland (Fulham always worse away)?

And is Fabregas worth keeping for the season?

i'm getting rid, because what i never do in this game is get carried away when a player does well in a single fixture, which he was half expected to do well in.

I planned to sell him, so i'm sticking to it.

Ive seen too many people cling on to the likes of tevez, reliving past glories. So, stick to your guns i think.

Kolarov or Yaya for this week? Also, are there any cheaper alternatives to Kolarov that's assured of a starting spot for the rest of the season?

How many City and Spurs players are people getting in. I currently have one and want 5, but obviously it's not worth the hits so might just have 3 or 4.

IMO if the transfer improves your squad, and the transfer-in has a dgw, it's worth the hit, or at least marginal enough so the risk is insignificant, and may well be spectacularly successful.

When it's not worth it is when you start transferring out rvp for dzeko or something stupid

I wouldn't say so. Bolton are extremely poor away, even if it is Blackpool.

I'd say Sunderland is their only good game left.

i'm still gobsmacked that i was banging on about dempsey all week , and got walters instead because he had blackpool after....and ive been buying players that were playing sunderland too.

thats the problem with overthinking on this game, you dont go with your instincts.

If there's one bit of advice i'd give to a Noob, it'd be this.

@After checking your daily gameweek score, dont look at your team again till Friday night. Sure get all the information etc. But make a CONCERTED, conscious effort not to start weighing up players until the last minute- therefore your instinct wont outthink itself, and the best route will usually show itself clearly to you."

I'm gonna try this now- even though ive been weighing shit up the past day or two.i think the key is- stay off your FPL page and dont be tinkering.

    Sin e.

walters might go crazy against blackpool. All in all, it wasn't a bad decision - marginal at worst - just went wrong.

Another year, you'd have picked dempsey, walters woulve got 3 goals, dempsey none, and you'd be doing this weird inverted cry-cry noise, with a little nagging feeling in the back of your mind that things could've been so so different.

but, i avoided walters because of his atrocious stats on those heatmap thingies - did you look at them?

i had a look at his chalkboards- they were pretty ok, aand if anything, showed he was being moved around from game to game.

And as i said repeatedly, hes the double gameweek king.

Anyway, no tinkering for me till Frida night. Maybe no transfers at all

After a nightmare couple of weeks and falling 40 points behind my leader I'm needing to do something pretty crazy I think.

Thinking Rooney and Zamora - Balotelli and Suarez (c), freeing funds to then do Barton - Toure next week for the double.

Ballsy (with the potential to be great) or just sheer stupidity?

I'd say Rooney is 'fixture proof' with his current form.

If Tevez does come back for the DGW you can then always do a straight swap.

admittedly there is a nice atmosphere about point hits this week, not sure why....usually people on here are extremely anti-point hits! Aside from that guy called "just one more 8 point hit", he's done insanely well whilst simultaneously enjoying the game!

(not to say that making no transfers isn't enjoying the game also)

This may be one of those cases of convincing of a self-serving bias but is there a possibility that Mancini may want to play Kolorov vs. Spurs to exploit our defensive rubbishness and choose to rest Lescott where he has a returning Lescott? Just think that if I were wanting to preserve a player for Stoke Lescott would be one of the key ones.

Was thinking, but gotta ask advice...

    Currently with:

    Nani - A.Young - Lampard - Dempsey - Adam

van Persie - Caroll - Gyan

    5 options come in mind:

    1. Nani > Kuyt ; Dempsey > Silva ; Gyan > Odemwingie (8pt hit)

    2. Nani > Kuyt ; A.Young > Silva (4pt hit)

    3. A.Young > Silva ; Dempsey > Yaya Toure (4pt hit)

    4. Dempsey > Silva ; Gyan > Odemwingie (4pt hit)

    5. Nani > Silva ; Dempsey > Yaya Toure ; Gyan > Suarez (4pt hit)

Personally, I vouch for option 1 or 5. Thoughts are welcomed.
