The Dugout Discussion opens up bright and early on this Bank Holiday Sunday as we look forward to a bumper feast of footballing action.

Birmingham play host to Wolves and Liverpool welcome Newcastle to Anfield first as the mid-day kick-offs see all those skippering Dirk Kuyt and Luis Suarez (yours truly included) hoping for a good start. Then it’s Arsenal’s turn to host Manchester United as Alex Ferguson looks to either get one hand firmly on the Premier League trophy or open up a crunch game with Chelsea next week. Finally, Manchester City play host to bottom of the table West Ham as all those backing David Silva with their captaincy are made to wait.

Full line-ups sourced from the official website on our two early kick-offs follow…

Birmingham XI: Foster; Carr, Johnson, Jiranek, Ridgewell; Larsson, Ferguson, Bowyer, Gardner; Phillips, Jerome

Wolves XI: Hennessey; Mancienne, Stearman, Craddock, Elokobi; Foley, O’Hara, Henry, Jarvis; Fletcher, Ward.

Two changes for the home side see Barry Ferguson and Kevin Phillips bring their many years of experience back to the starting XI in place of Keith Fahey and Aleksander Hleb. A fit again George Elokobi comes straight back in to the side, while Kevin Foley also starts as Wolves also make two changes.

Liverpool XI: Reina; Flanagan, Carragher, Skrtel, Johnson; Lucas, Spearing, Maxi, Meireles; Kuyt, Suarez

Newcastle XI: Krul; Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Jose Enrique; Barton, Tiote, Nolan, Gutierrez; Ameobi, Lovenkrands

Andy Carroll has to make do with a place on the bench versus his old side, so hat-trick hero Maxi Rodriguez retains his place while Dirk Kuyt stays up front. Glen Johnson also returns from injury. Newcastle are unchanged.

Three games on the trot, televised, with little room for a break inbetween. Time to settle in, head into the Dugout Discussion if it takes your fancy, and look forward to six hours of consecutive Premier League action.

I made the same captain choice and now I'm out of the top 10. Seemed like a good idea at the time and the worst thing is if I left my team as the week before I would have scored 15 more points with a transfer left.

Its turning inot a nightmare end for me i keep trying to chase points..

what on earth do i do with this dross?!

    Begovic Foster
    Carr Lescott Coleman Shawcross Luiz
Young Nani O'hara Sessegnon (worst transfer ever) Fabregas
    RVP Odem Sturridge

Theres about two players who i'd want for GW 36!

I'll be bringing in VDV for sure and one other?

    Best transfer:
    1. A.Young to VDV
    2. Coleman to Lescott
    3. Adam to Yaya
    4. Zamora to Pavluchenko

Is it worth doing more than 1 for a 4 point hit? (I currently only have Silva for the double and I am 5 points behind the leader in my mini league - he only has Kolorov for the double)

Can't afford it, unfortunately. I can do Nani, Lampard or A.Young to VDV. Also if I do Adam to Yaya, I can't then do Coleman to Lescott and would have to go for Kolarov or Zabaleta instead.

Thinking a city defender in as I only have 2 defenders with good fixtures, after that I'm stuck! Not that their aren't good options more it's a case of who to drop. Obviously wanna get rid of Ethers but the replacement probably wouldn't play anyway!

A “You are the ref” type question.

What happens if a player is (just) off the pitch when he’s fouled (nearly happened in the Suarez/williamson penalty today)? Must still be a foul – but where do you take the free kick from?

I don’t know the answer – interested if anyone does…

How will your team differ from your quarry? Take Sturr out of the equation until his fitness is assured, at least, if not completely because you have to sit him or Zamora anyway.

DGW players (non defenders) have the best chance of making sense for hits. I have tried to figure it out in a very rough fashion- it's quite amazing how seldom hits work out over one week IMO- SWAG... SingleGW 10%, DGW maybe 20%. The payoff is from a better captain choice of those you acquire and a better follow on team.

I have not done the calc but your A might work without sturr.

Thoughts on who will go down?

Wolves have basically the same fixtures as West Ham

If West Ham avoid defeat to wigan, wigan probably will go down
Blackpool will more than likely go down as well

Its between West Ham, wolves and blackburn really for the third place.

If blackburn beat West Ham this week at home, theyll stay up leaving it between West Ham and wolves for the last place.

If West Ham don't lose to Blackburn, the loser of Blackburn and Wolves on the last day will probably go down!

I reckon they'll get 7 as well, Blackburn will get 0 from their next 2 imo and Wolves could (and I hope they do) get 4, meaning that the game between Blackburn and Wolves could be a straight play off! How good would that be!!

True, but could you see nani not ripping it up against blackburn and blackpool in the final games of the season. Chelsea have 3 games left. United and Everton stand out as hard fixtures to get a clean sheet, and their's no point doubling up on them, at this stage.

vdv is a must for the coming week, and adam not so much as he has 2 tough fixtures too. I think the hit is more than justified. Dawson will play 180 minutes, and you'd expect atleast 1 clean sheet.

If you get rid of nani now, then it would be silly to get him back for the final 2 games, which could be potentially very fruitful.

Yeah, I do like the idea of Nani for the last 2 weeks. Thing is, if I do Nani - VDV then I keep 3m in the bank and can get Rooney when I downgrade Terry.

If I keep Nani then I won't be able to get Rooney, who I think will be more essential.

Retaining Nani is a valid reason, but he's been out of form for a while and Valencia hurts his production. Good point Demi. I just have found hits for defenders hurt- a DGW for a defender gives you a wee chance.

I never understood the prohibition on two TOP defenders from one top team like Chelsea- I understand the theory for the other 17 or so teams. Thanks again Demi.

Demi, may come back with an answer, but Terry for Dawson- let's assume Terry gets 2- dawson has to get 6 or better to make this work- thus one clean sheet and one normal 2. what are his odds of that?

let's say he gets 8 points- for your 2 point gain, you don't have a Chelsea Def any more, but Tot for the last two games. Dawson is great, but his pals are a busted BAE and atrophied Gomes. (not Hart, not Cole). I see a looming dark shadow of DOUBT.

At least both dawson and terry are nailed on starters.

Yeah I see your logic. I agree with you on taking a hit for a def, and especially for a spurs def. But the way I see it, I'd rather keep Nani than Adam, and I want to get rid of one of my Chelsea defs, so this way kind of makes sense.

Hmm, I might just wait on this one and take the price hits on VDV and Nani tonight.

Nibbsy-- hope not to confuse things on your possible Nani-VDV but if you wait,.... make sure you have enuf cash to get Drogba or Rooney the last two weeks- that could make a differnce.

I would rather have VDV on pens those last two weeks than Nani opposite Valencia. good luck, I am stuck in a holding pattern with my team ATM.

Thanks for your thoughts jack. I do agree with what you're saying about hits for defenders. With this situation, I wasn't looking at specifically whether the hit is worth it, but also what doing that transfer allows you to do with Nani, vdv, adam etc. You don't really need terry and adam for the remainder of the season, looking at the fixtures. If he goes with A, and get's rid of nani, he may be compensated by dawson conceding in both games, and therefore dodging a bullet there.

However going with B, although looks risky, could potentially have bigger rewards from nani, that would cancel out any loss occured (in terms of points) from getting dawson in.

I too hadn't factored in the valencia factor. But my gut feeling is that nani won't start in the champions league final, and he is a bigger flat track bully than valencia when dealing with lower table opposition.

Also the rooney factor is tempting. He may get even more points than Nani. It's a tough 1 to decipher for me, but on Paper; A looks to be the most rewarding plan.

Sorry if the above didn't make sense. I'm not really too alert/awake at this time of night.

Cheers for your thoughts Demi, very insightful.

I think I've concluded that I'm not too worried about the -4, as I will be taking that at some point in the next 3 weeks to downgrade Terry. I think the question is whether to stick with Nani or trade for Rooney. That would also mean swapping a striker, so I'll have to also think about Odem, sturridge and rvp. Definitely going to need a few days on this one!

Drogba would be nice too, but Lamps will have to suffice.

Is Newcastle's attack worth investing a creative midfielder in? Unless you already have him.

                  why?

in west hams last 7 home games against teams outside the top 4 parker has 40 points thats just under 6 ppg average

their next 3 fixtures are BLB wig SUN

be very suprised if he didnt get 15+ pts in those 3

backing parker to score or assist is foolish imo. ok he's good for bps but is that enough? i think you're relying too much on luck for a parker goal or assist (hitzel too imo, but much less so). better to back players who you're more used to seeing hitting the back of the net, basically a more attacking player

the same parker who has scored as many goals as yaya toure who is being tipped by everyone on here pretty much?

only got 3 assists less but 11bps more

if u fancy man city to do well at everton and at home to spurs fair enough but i think west ham will finish well so rather go for parker or hitzelsperger myself

i'd also use the meireles argument with parker. like meireles he scored quite a few screamers in a short space of time. you can't really rely on a player who scores screamers to keep scoring them. i'd much rather back a kuyt or a nolan to score a scrappy goal from a more attacking position than parker driving from pretty much defensive mid and scoring a screamer.
i guess it also depends how you play the game. i guess as you've had players like barry ferguson you're happy with a steady supply of 4s and 5s as you know it's consistent and over time it adds up nicely. parker will probably do well in this role of getting scores like 5,4,3,6 but even though it's the same total i'd rather get a player who scores 2,7,1,8. just because they're more attackign and capable of the big score

If I play next year my average will be 34 plus 1,100,000 divided by two.......because I am through caring about ankle injuries, snow storms 4000 miles away, transfer windows, and double game weeks. maybe 1.100,000 is too optimistic.

I will miss this blog though and learning English slang and customs.

Mine has been inconsistent, been in the top 1,000 twice and then 50k twice. I blame my month long holidays in them years for why I did poorly and when there was no such thing as auto captain.

not good enough. an affinity with certain players in real life (you know what i mean) will always be my downfall. i know but i don't mind as there's nothing better for me at least than celebrating a player you like scoring in your team.
now the guys i play with in my mini league have got significantly better i will have to try and buck my ideas up and remove all bias next season and work on rectifying other mistakes i've made this season. a mistake this gameweek for example, it happens only once or twice a year but i didn't want to captain any of my 15, insteading of spending 4 points to get someone i do want to captain i gambled on adam and sat tight and hoped. next season if i'm not sure i'm going to make sure i buy a captain in a week like this, make sure the hope-expectation scale is much more in favour of expectation (suarez) than hope (adam)

        I know what you mean.

I had mini-league leads to protect so I stuck with Rooney rather than swapping him out for Suarez (c). They were more important than my overall rank.

don't agree with different tactics for protecting or chasing. or playing differently for a cup match for example. just do what gets you the most points*

*yes i need to start picking players i don't like to do this too

I was conscious that I'd want Rooney next weekend and mindful of his display last season at the Emirates. History is often a factor in a transfer happening or not for me.

As it turned out I missed out on about 15 points but that's this bloody game.

yeah if you did it again rooney would score a free kick, get 3bps and you'd be laughing. history really is irrelevent but creeps into my thinking sometimes too.

If a player has a team he often does well against - eg, Rooney and Newcastle or K Davies and West Ham - it can influence a decision, and for the better.

        spot on...

i did that last season and held on to players i liked and hoped for the best! Not this season...i've tried my hardest to play the odds. Trying to see where i can maximise my potential....even if it meant moving United players out (and bring in City, Arsenal & 'Pool players).

the occasional flyer has worked for me probably 5 out of 10 times which isnt bad. The real key as we all know is captain selection!

that was near the end. after all the hoo ha on here about his defenders doing well i checked it out near the end and it was true. leon cort at the emirates is the daddy. that's the equivalent of chosing to play ian evatt at the emirates this season. plus leon cort wasn't even a goal, assist or bp threat at all so it was just plain shite that worked. yeah he did it to sepnd money on attack and midfield, doesn't mean it wasn't a joke getting points from the players he wasn't even trying to get points from
