Aaron Ramsey steps out of Cesc’s shadow to down Man United and offer Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea hope in their defence of the league title. Liverpool continue their impressive progress since the return of Kenny Dalglish by sweeping aside Newcastle to leapfrog Tottenham in fifth place. Birmingham and Wolves share the spoils at St Andrews and Man City pick up another home win to leave West Ham rooted to the bottom of the table. Here’s the notes on yesterday’s games…

Dirk Kuyt
Thanks to spot-kick duties in the absence of Steven Gerrard, Kuyt continued his recent scoring spree by grabbing his eighth goal in seven games for the Reds in an Anfield stroll over Newcastle. Kuyt also picked up an assist and 2 Bonus Points for a 13 point return, thoroughly justifying his place at the top of our captain’s poll for gameweek 35. Andy Carroll’s second-half introduction looks like ending the Dutchman’s role up front, though, with a return to his right wing position for next week’s trip to Fulham most likely.

Luis Suarez
Drafted in by 33,000 Fantasy Managers ahead of this gameweek, the Uruguayan returned their faith with another eye-catching performance that brought about a goal, an assist and 3 Bonus Points. Suarez has picked up Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points in every home start since arriving in January.

Newcastle Struggling
The Toon Army have seen their favourites score just one goal in the last four games, as Newcastle’s form drops dramatically in this latter part of the season. Alan Pardew’s side have just one win in their last eight games, and, despite their current 41 point tally, need another victory to secure survival. Their remaining fixtures (BIR, che, WBA) offer hope as far as the home matches are concerned, and they’ll be relying on top-scorer Kevin Nolan to fire them to safety. Luckily for Pardew, Nolan tends to keep his goals for home occasions; ten of his twelve have came at St James’ Park.

Steven Fletcher
The Scotsman continues to impress up front for Wolves; his penalty opener in the derby draw at Birmingham was a third goal in six games. It says a lot for his contribution to the cause that Mick McCarthy’s side have only scored seven goals over that period, showing just how crucial he has been of late. Incidentally, Wolves haven’t lost in that six game period when Fletcher has found the net. With (WBA, sun, BLA) still to come, his goals could be the key to their survival.

Birmingham Edge Towards Safety
Birmingham’s home draw with Wolves came at a cost; top scorer Craig Gardner was sent off after picking up two yellow cards and now misses next week’s trip to Newcastle. The point puts them four points clear of the drop zone and with (FUL, tot) to follow, another win should see them safe. Alex McLeish will be hoping Roger Johnson is fine next week; reports indicate the centre half was limping towards the end of the game, though no possible injury has been suggested as of yet.

Aaron Ramsey
Arsenal may have lost Cesc Fabregas to a thigh injury suffered in Saturday’s training session, but the Welshman -making his fourth league appearance all season- proved his class on the big occasion. Fabregas has played 13 league games in 2011 and has yet to find the net; Ramsey managed it in this, his second start, grabbing the only goal of the game to hand Chelsea a lifeline in the race for the title.

Wenger The Optimist
The Gunners boss was delighted with Arsenal’s performance and although his team are firm outsiders for the title, he still holds some hope in the race at the top:

”For me, it was immense pressure to be out of the title race, believe me, because I felt so strongly we would win this championship. We want to fight until the last second of the season. I have not given up any hope. We were really unlucky this season until now, let’s hope we have a bit more luck in the final three weeks. You never know.”

The Arsenal boss also revealed Samir Nasri was taken off at half time due to a “small” hamstring problem.

Fergie’s Away Day Blues Continue
A win would have set them up perfectly for next weekend’s Old Trafford showdown with Chelsea, but Man United were deservedly beaten at the Emirates. The league leaders have tasted defeat in three of their last five matches on the road now, falling to Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. United were the polar opposite of the team that swept aside Schalke in midweek, and have scored just one goal in the last three league games.

Nemanja Vidic
The United centre half was more than a little fortunate to escape a deliberate handball in the area, a moment of folly which could easily have earned him a red card and handed Arsenal a spot-kick. Considering any dismissal would also have also made him ineligible for next week’s crucial Old Trafford showdown with Chelsea -where a win would leave United six points clear with two games to play- Vidic can count himself lucky, in spite of this defeat.

City Looking Good for Top Four
Roberto Mancini’s side took a big step towards cementing fourth stop -at least- with their 2-1 home win over West Ham. The club’s form at Eastlands has been fantastic of late, with seven wins and a draw from their last eight home games. City play twice at Eastlands in the next two weeks, including the upcoming double gameweek (eve & TOT, STK, bol) and look primed for Fantasy Investment ahead of this weekend.

Mancini Positive on City Injuries
Nigel De Jong opened the scoring -his first for the club- but failed to emerge for the second forty-five due to the recurrence of a hip injury picked up a couple of days ago. Pablo Zabaleta suffered shin and ankle knocks but after the game Mancini revealed both should be fine for next weekend. Micah Richards is looking good for the Everton game and as for a certain Señor Tevez:

“Carlos is doing some work now and we will see“.

With two games in a week and the forthcoming FA Cup Final in mind Mancini even hinted at rotation, no doubt to the annoyance of many Fantasy Managers:

“I have picked the same team for the last three games but maybe we will change things at Everton and against Spurs.”

Hammers Lose Again
Five defeats on the trot, bottom of the league. Relegation form? Definitely. A look at West Ham’s last three fixtures, however, (BLA, wig, SUN) shows just why they still harbour hopes of staying up, as Avram Grant‘s side go head to head with three of the worst form teams in the league. Demba Ba’s goal was only the Hammers’ fourth in the last six league games, a worrying sign for Grant as the trap door inches closer.

If you can get only one then VDV by a long way. Penos, free-kicks and corners plus playing Blackpool plus Mancini saying he will rotate.
I hope he remembers how well the last time he rotated Silva went.

Silva will outscoe yaya but yaya can get big scores and he can shoot, whereas silva can't

it's luck when it comes to those two so yaya isn't such a bad option

Now we had defeated them at OT...and looking to their home record it wont be a easy task....we are confident of beating them....but still i feel its Manu title to loose 😉

    VDV, Lampard, Silva, Kuyt, (Adam)

GW37: Foster (FUL, tot) -> Van Der Sar (bla, BLP)

    Morning guys

3 gw's left so I'm starting to think how to protect my 18 point lead in mini league.

Both my rivals have yaya + sturridge and because I didn't take a hit last gw to get yaya, I can't afford to get him + sturridge anymore.

So which one of these sounds better to you?

    a) yaya + 4 points (and play adam)
    b) aj + sturridge (play sturridge, bench adam)

B of course only if sturridge is declared fit before weekend.
Currently thinking a, but also very scared of sturridge vs sunderland...

    Cheers!

I carried Dempsey too...didn't see the injury coming obviously...shame, as Dempsey would have done damage in that game at Sunderland. Surprised the Kuyt did the business again but I think we got it right going for Suarez over him - Kuyt will be shifted to the right now that Carroll is back so he'll likely need pens to keep ticking. He might get them though the way things have gone for him.

Bolton next games could be high scoring affairs. If sturridge is fit, he will explode. I'm even thinking k.davies as he's on penalties.

vdv is obviously a must and captain would be good too, still no idea which other tottenham forward to go for

        silva is baps magnate

west ham could do well. next gameweek apart from vdv could be lowscoring so a nice sturridge hattrick will go down well 😎

Call me crazy, but it is time for lampard to go.

Lampard out, vdv in, money will come in handy for some united coverage later.

I'm just glad he performed better than i expected during the time i had him

I'm going to miss him for the newcastle game though.

It is time, vdv is one of the safest bets all season and man utd against blackburn and blackpool is screaming out for points though I have no idea who will get them

blackburn away is more appealing in name than in nature (They are actually quite solid at home)

but blackpool at home, in a possible scenario where goal difference will clinch the title...

MASSIVE! i might end up doign no transfer for hw37, and then balotelli+sturridge => rooney+ hernandez for gw38.

I'll have that much in the bank!

there's no way im getting rid of bale before a dgw including blackpool. Even as a left back do you think he'll sit back? No chance.

And although, again, he got nothing v chelsea... he at least looked fast again, which is what i was hoping for. He's been rotting on my bench in anticipation for this week!

What percentage chance would you say spurs have of keeping at least 1 clean sheet in the dgw?

Blackpool only scored 1 goal in 2 games... suddenly looking less prolific.

Man city always tight in the big games and would love a draw v spurs

So I'm thinking maybe there's a reasonable chance?

I wouldn't be backing a cleanie. Especially with Gomes back chcuking it in his own net again.

        Yeah true.

But they did pretty well keeping a clean sheet* v a determined chelsea side!

ok thanks all... might actually bring the bad man gomes in for cech!

So many reasons point to this being a good trasnfer for me.

He rotates well with my no.2 szczcesney, frees up essential cash for manu players later, avoids 2 chelsea defs with a tough run in...

all in all i'm 90% ready to make that signing!

I'm 'happy' that Foster got the assist as it kind of evens up the Silva assist in my mini league.

I do however find both a bit bizarre-in both cases they were not deflections, the defender was 'in control' i.e. a deliberate touch of the ball in terms of being a 'header' and 'booting it' in the net. Neither seem right but I suppose these things even up.

Whilst I'm on my high horse what's with the change in mind on bonuses-Rooney got some bonus last year for a 7 minute cameo and a goal(which changed the game) and similaryly Fabregas did as well last year for a 20 minute showing and a goal. Bowing to pressure? I understand mistakes on names.

whilst the Foster assist is questionable, the Silva or more appropriately the Zabeletta goal was a goal and therefore was an assist for Silva. There is simply no debate in my opinion.

If a striker is shooting toward goal and its on target but gets a deflection it is attributed to the striker. If it is going wide and takes a deflection it is an own goal. Zabaletta's shot-cum-cross was going in the back of the net. The defender got in the way. Therefore the fact that Silva gave the ball to Zab meant that he received the assist.

I'm baffled that this is even under discussion.

I don't agree Foch-it wasn't a deflection-the player tried to boot it away and booted it in to the net-he was making a deliberate play at the ball, it didn't just deflect off of him. I do however accept under the current rules it is a goal but it doesn't seem right in my opinion. I'm not sure the position is a cast iron as you state but you are entitled to your opinion.

I think its refreshing to attribute it to the attacking player and not to an OG.. no one wants to score an OG but how often does Zab score? not very often. Sits perfectly well with me - silva assist or not

Different debate-but I do agree that where a player has had the key/significant influence over a goal or the creation of the goal then rightly he should be awarded with a goal/assist-so we can also now agree on the Foster assist.

              * in all seriousness I do think there should be some latitude over assists-how many times do we see a brilliant bit of play by a player who crosses, gets deflected and doesn't get the assist or where it hits a defender rather than the keeper on the way to goal and then back to another player who scores and no assist.

Coming on and scoring a last minute goal that wins your team the game is more worthy IMO than being hauled off after the first 45 after scoring against a team who were playing god damn awful at the time.

As for the changes... Since I have Foster and Silva (c)... could be worse :p

Can't believe the Foster assist has gone on. 🙁
41 pt lead now down to 38.

I'm trying to get in an attacking frame of mind as defensive mentality makes me too cagey. With this in mind, should I go all out on the City/Spurs double this week and take an 8 pt hit bringing in Silva/Yaya/VDV or is the emphasis on shifting out Torres if I'm gonna spunk 8 pts up the wall?

I think if I bring in VDV and throw the armband on him I'll be cancelling out a big differential as I'm sure he'll do the same.
It just feels like everytime I see the Torres name and shirt in my team it's just looking at me giving me the middle finger but I also hate not having a decent bit of DGW coverage.
