As this 2010/11 season has progressed, the displays of David Silva become more assured with every passing game. There was no questioning the Spaniard’s ability when he joined Man City from Valencia at the start of the season, it was more a question of a tricky settling-in period for a diminutive playmaker less accustomed to the physical rigours of the Premier League.

A look at Silva’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points is fairly indicative of his debut campaign; up until the end of January, he’d played 22 games, scoring 1 goal, picking up 5 assists and 7 Bonus Points for a return of just 74 points, averaging just 3.3 points per game. For a player who started the FPL game priced 9.0 back in August, it was something of an understatement to view Silva as poor value in terms of Fantasy Investment.

Since February, however, the Spaniard seems to have found his feet within both the league and Roberto Mancini’s Man City system. The past 9 games have seen score 3 goals, pick up 3 assists and 11 Bonus Points for a 56 point return, or 6.2 ppg, more or less double his previous output.

Last Sunday’s home win over West Ham saw Silva at the heart of so many Man City moves, with a fantastic display that could have brought home far more than just 7 points for his Fantasy Owners. As our Members can see, this was far and away Silva’s most influential performance of the season and it seems that, in the absence of Carlos Tevez, his importance to City has only increased. Here’s a look at his displays in the last two home games, with and without Tevez.

This Average Position map shows Tevez (32) playing far up the field in the Sunderland game. Silva is just obscured by Mario Balotelli (45), who started in the middle of the front three, with Yaya Toure (42) fielded in defensive midfield.

Against West Ham, Silva (21) is virtually in the same position, but the crucial difference here is Balotelli. Playing as the lone forward on Sunday, the Italian’s position, rather than being similar to Tevez, shows a different interpretation of the role, as he played far deeper than the Argentine.

This meant that when in possession there was no Tevez to play forward to and Silva, popping up all over the pitch, became the main outlet time and again. Yaya Toure, back in his familiar berth at attacking central midfield, was City’s most forward player on average, as his endless energy saw him bomb forward and cause the Hammers problems from deep. City kept the ball much better, and had 60% possession against West Ham compared to 50% against Sunderland.

A look at Silva’s passing chalkboards in the two matches is revealing. He made 43 passes against Sunderland but against West Ham his distribution almost doubled, as he made 75 passes in an altogether more threatening performance, despite the match finishing 2-1 to the hosts.

A look at City’s shots also confirms they had more attempts in the West Ham game, with 21 shots (5 blocked) compared to 16 shots (5 blocked) versus Sunderland. Silva, in particular, managed 4 shots against the Hammers but just 1 in the Black Cats demolition, another example of an increase in his attacking potency.

With Tevez still only rated 50-50 for the FA Cup Final and Edin Dzeko failing to make much of an impression, it appears Balotelli is likely to continue leading the line for City, a good omen, perhaps, for Silva Fantasy Owners ahead of the upcoming double gameweek (eve & TOT) and beyond (STK, bol). Let’s hope the City boss chooses not to follow up on his weekend hint of rotation, then.

        or i could do..

        nani/nasri > silva
        adam > vdv
hangeland > 4.6 or 5.4 defender depending on who i sell..

either way it has to be 3 transfers to get both silva and vdv in..

Tricky situation for me lads. Basically, if Chelsea beat United: I want Drogba desperately. If Chelsea don't beat United: He's not a priority.

I'll obviously lose Bent for him, but would need to create funds from elsewhere. Do I:

    A) Gamble on the Chelsea win, and bring in Sturridge for Suarez this week, setting 4 million aside for the Drogba transfer next week. It wouldn't be the end of the world if Chelsea don't win, as I'm sure I could find something to do with the extra 4 million.

    B) Leave things this week, and then downgrade VDV (or possibly still Suarez) in order to create funds for Drogba, if Chelsea win.

Not sure how many we'll put past them if we're out of the title race to be honest. If we do win at United, then it will come down to goal difference, and (with United at home to Blackpool on the final day) we'll have to score as many goals as physically possible against Newcastle, who are terrible at the moment!

Fancy Sturridge to outscore Suarez over the next two games as well.

Yeah, he probably won't play if the title race still isn't over. Rooney and Hernandez are clearly first choice right now.

Leaning towards option A at the minute, although - despite saying so in the initial post - I'm now not sure how exactly I'd spend the 4 million if I decide against Drogba! Will probably go for him regardless, you're right, even if nothing rides on it, we should have no trouble putting a few past Newcastle.

If it does comes down to goal difference, then it's all about 3 Chelsea in week 37, then swapping to 3 Utd in week 38. Could be some massive scores!

Ok, next question VDV or Silva for the captaincy?

VDV is my top choice (based on penalties, blackpool, rotation proof, assist ability), but I get the sense that some of the smart kids on here will be taking a punt on young Silva.

I think if anyone was considering Silva initially, then Mancini's comments about possibly mixing the side up a bit will have dissuaded them from doing so, especially now that City seem to have wrapped up 4th.

VDV is definitely the percentage choice this week.

any striker from DGW is a bet, pav defoe and crouch none of them guaranteed starts
balotelli weak form and dzeko's good form up the bench lately may oblige mancini to reshuffle
not to mention tevez' possible return
however if u have nthn to lose gambling on one can be a great differential

jamsiep ur comments re drogba have got me thinking! i might just sit tight this week and save 2 freebies

only problem is i have no real standout captain choice

i could do fabs to silva/vdv and have the funds there for drogba or potentially rooney next week

It's definitely a tricky situation, because we won't know how important Drogba is for week 37, until the United-Chelsea game this week.

If Fabregas is still a doubt for next week, then that transfer (followed by getting Drogba the week after) seems like an obvious one.

Lads - I desperately need advice. Made some terrible moves in the last few weeks and have got 4 red arrows in a row. My lead in one of my mini-leagues has been cut to 50 points (he has gained 40 points in two weeks). It's worth alot of money to hang on!!

What should I do this week?

    Team is...

    Foster Begovic
Kolarov Huth Walker Coleman R Johnson
    Nani Adam O'Hara Young Lampard
    Torres(!) RVP Zamora

    £0.2m in the bank...

I guess i need VDV? Is that enough or take a hit on Silva too?

Maybe, Real will be going great guns to attack Barca so Ronaldo may be vital. I feel that game is less of a certainty than United v Schalke. Ferguson said at the weekend that Berbatov, Scholes and Owen will play so take your pick as to who else he drafts in. Rooney is almost a dead cert to be rested, maybe left out the squad altogether. Fabio may play.

Hi Camzy. The safe choice is Silva but I can't stop thinking about Bale to be honest. I remember what kind of games he played last year near the end against all tough opponents. Also in the CL too. And he was LB last year. Nobody in the top 1k has him. He is the only one who could EXPLODE IMO. Am I right? Anybody else thinking about him?

he actually did okay considering. I think it was the week Chelsea put 7 past Sunderland, and he brought in Anelka who was heavily involved.

But yeah, Rooney and Fabregas just went nuts.

    (Team linked)

Lads, im chasing a 5 pt lead but my rival has 2 free transfers this week and think he will bring in Silva and VDV to match me (he also has Hart to counter my Lolarov). Should I get Modric to increase my DGW player count or get Sturridge (if he recovers) for his potential scoring. I have 1 free transfer and dont want to take a hit.

Modric is a good player but he really does play second fiddle to Silva and VDV this week. Sturridge is your best shout, I think. I've got Sturridge and Silva.

What are the odds for Sturridge to be benched even if he is fit? I think Coyle has decided to rotate and give chance to everybody near the end of the season and rest players.

I think against Blackburn he just realised Bolton were terrible away from home so put out a week team. If Sturridge is fit, he'll play. Coyle has reiterated his desire to sign Sturridge permanently. Giving him max game time won't hurt.

Young + Adam > Bale + Modric really isn't worth an 8 pt hit is it?

Trying to catch a massive lead and I know he's only going in with VDV + Silva.

I can see the benefits of having VDV for next week, but for some reason I'm hesitant. I can only remove Kuyt or Lampard for him. Can someone please give me an argument for or against VDV and which of the two to get rid of. Really can't decide. Thanks.

Kuyt. Carroll's back he'll be shifted back to his less effective right wing role.
      VDV has penos and Blackpool.

Everything that Mac1988 said. I think VDV will outscore Kuyt, and youre better off keeping Lamps for this week to see what happens in the Utd game.

Thanks. I'm too afraid to go into the dgw without VDV and I reckon your Kuyt reasoning is sound. Does anyone know if VDV's price will rise again before the deadline? (I'm new to the game so don't know all the technicalities.)

I'm doing Kuyt to VDV as my only transfer this week. I think Fulham will put up a fight and Kuyt is back on the right wing. He can't get penalties in every game... can he? :O

If N'zogbia is fit, Adam must be benched. Although, I've got a very similar midfield problem and I want to get in O'hara, I feel he's due a haul. Would have to sacrifice RVP or Suarez though to do it.

Oh and keep Hangeland on the bench as I think it'll be a score draw or a narrow Liverpool win. Blackpool's display against Stoke has me convinced they'll struggle to score this week, even with the admittedly pourous defence of Spurs.

Split the Chelsea and stoke defence up 1 playing 1 on bench in my opinion. I can't see any of them keeping a cleanie but if one does at least you have one playing and Nzogbia as the other

Yea might be a good idea to split them up, dunno which way to go though. Cech/Huth or Bego/Luiz... both are saves + goal threat combinations. I think Hangeland must be played this week due to the home game against pool who find it hard to score away.

I've thought about it, but I can see City conceding in both dgw games... it's a tough one this week. I'd rather do Luiz to Lescott if I was to bring in a City def I think. Lescott looks pretty dangerous in those set piece situations.
