With the previous nine fixtures in gameweek 36 failing to return a single clean sheet, there were concerns that Fulham and Liverpool would play out a 0-0 stalemate. Liverpool had other plans however – they continued a barnstorming run of form under Kenny Dalglish, smashing five past the home side to chalk up 17 goals in the last 5 games. Fulham grabbed a brace to make it a poor week for defenders, with only tonight’s Man City vs Spurs clash left for any chance of a shutout. Here’s the notes from last night’s game…

Luis Suárez
The Uruguayan continues to dazzle since his January move, with another outstanding display for Liverpool in the Craven Cottage rout. With 65 points in his 11 appearances, he’s just shy of 6pts per game, a phenomenal return for his debut half-season. Suárez’s game is looked kindly upon by the Bonus judges, picking up 14 already. As far as Fantasy Managers are concerned, the only aspect missing in his game is penalty-kick duties.

As Kenny Dalglish acknowledged after the match:

“Suárez was fantastic. He was running as hard at the end as at the beginning. Even in our wildest dreams we couldn’t have thought he’d settle as well as he has done. He has graced the pitch every time he has stepped on it“.

Opposite number Mark Hughes also joined the Suárez fanclub in his summing up…

“I don’t think our guys have been up against him too much at international level, so it was a new experience for them and they’ll learn from it…He was always mobile, always in little pockets of space. Maybe we allowed him too much time and never really dictated to him. It was always the other way round and when good players have time and space, they can hurt you, which he certainly did. He was outstanding tonight.”

We were tracking Suárez in third place in our Watchlist rankings behind Peter Odemwingie and Robin Van Persie going into the weekend – all three came good to continue their outstanding run of form.

Maxi and Kuyt
As Suárez led the Fulham back-line a merry dance, the Liverpool pair continued their incredible recent scoring streaks. With Andy Carroll sitting on the sidelines, Maxi hit a hat-trick for his second 20+ FPL point return in three weeks, while Kuyt scored for the fifth game in a row, and has returned 84 FPL points in the last eight gameweeks.

Dalglish also gave positive news on his other big-name January signing, suggesting Andy Carroll only has bruising, offering hope the big striker may come back for the remaining two games (TOT,avl). Carroll’s return would see Kuyt move back into midfield, with Maxi favourite to return to the bench, a sign of an improving strength in depth at Anfield. In normal circumstances, Dalglish would surely be reluctant to tinker with his lineup and re-introduce Carroll. The opportunity to see the big number nine and Suarez working in tandem up front once more is likely to tempt him to shuffle however.

Fulham Already on Holiday?
Mark Hughes’ side have one of the best home records in the top-flight this season and came into this game with 6 wins, a draw and 6 clean sheets in the last seven at Craven Cottage. Mid-table safety with just a couple of games to go, however, can sometimes lead to lethargy and Fulham were deservedly three-nil down at the break after a poor display. The hosts only started playing in the second 45, when Bobby Zamora replaced Simon Davies, and at least matched Liverpool for goals after the break. To make matters worse, 5 bookings dented their hopes of Europa League qualification through the Fair Play League.

Mark Hughes will want a response after this thrashing but Fulham face two difficult last fixtures (bir, ARS) before the season closes. Fantasy Managers holding on to Fulham’s assets – notably Clint Dempsey, will likely be considering their options going into Saturday’s deadline.

        I know! Height of rudeness.

I've probably lost my mini-league this year pretty much because one guy has had Kuyt and Baines for the past 7 or so weeks when they've been getting stupid points (and a stupid run of penalties), and I've never quite brought them in. Woe is me.

I think that's the same with a lot of people. He's not actually playing up front even without Carroll, but taking penalties is massive and makes his scoring unpredictable, or very predictable (and excellent) as has been the case recently.

Not since SuperDorrans' breakdown where he closed all his betting accounts... You'll have to ask him if he appears on here. Would be a bit of a waste of fiver (he only just renewed his membership) if he then didn't look at the tips.

Dropped 60 places overnight - happy with that

Not bad considering I had Baird (-1)

Was sitting down thinking Fulham would get a cleanie and it lasted 33 seconds. Lucky I had Luiz too, his lasted 36 seconds.

Walker chipping in with 2 got me a respectable +1 for the back 3 🙂

    Can anyone beat a +1 for a back 3?

    Lads,

Its been my first season playing this game and I've always avoided taking transfers hits, though looking at the considerably higher rank of regular posters here (e.g. Tosey, Daniel), hits seems to be the name of the game.

Any advice on when best to take hits? Ironically, the one mini league I've given up on chasing down the leader (NICK D CLG) is 77 points ahead and he has taken no hits this season!?

    Thanks.

Hits aren't mandatory but it's obvious that if the player coming in scores more than +4 than the player going out, it's been worth it for that single GW.

Personally if I'm taking a hit, it's looking a few GWs down the line, not just for a single GW and I'm ranked well.

I don't think there's any rule. If the transfers have been done well, there'll be lesser need to take the hits.

+1, I am normally against hits but some weeks it's just too obvious. Just watching transfers in tells a story during a week. Dempsey 4 rises 4 days in a row, bang 18 points. Ok, that's a lucky example.

        +1

The only rule is: THERE ARE NO RULES!

It varies from person to person, I'm more than happy to take multiple hits, it paid off last season - where the scoring was more predictable and there were more doubles, but not so much this wretched season!

This is my first season too, so I'm not one of the heavyweights here. But I've done pretty well after christmas with more thought-trough hits. It seems people forget about the (potential) future value you get through taking a hit, and just consider the chances of outscoring the current player by 4 for a single GW. If the new player has an estimated expected value of something like 2 more than the current, that's fine for me as long as the run of matches, or the form, hold promise for more.

Oof, after last nights performance (and the last few weeks)i'm seriously considering either Sturridge or Odemthingy to Suarez. Prob Odem, surely he can't keep scoring? Not that i'm complaining, he's been getting me points....but my rival (7pts behind before tonight) has Suarez. Guess the question is....

Who'll score more last 2 games?

    Suarez -4
    Odem
    Sturridge

    ???

I wouldn't do it. Liverpool have been banging them in, but Suarez hasn't had exceptional points. Taking out one of two potentially prolific players for another potentially prolific player for 4 points leaves you just 3 ahead.

If you bring Suarez in, you can't pull ahead.
If you don't do it, you can- of course, he could catch you, but he could do that with just a 3 point lead with the other 10 players easily enough.

Yeah, this is the problem the lead is so narrow, I have just literally taken first after a whole season of being 3rd/4th. The current 3rd place team is also only about 12pts back.

Think i'm going to stick with my front three and hope they outscore Suarez. Transfer will be on the Midfield this week. Either Hitz or N'Zog.

Or I could cover Liverpool with Kuyt/Maxi?

I'm preferring players who are playing for a team still with something to aim for.

Therefore that would make Suarez the best as they could still get 4th place and also lose out to Spurs for 5th.

Ronaldo to score 2 or more is 9/4 on Totesport. Considering that the only thing that Real have left to play for is getting Ronaldo to the Golden Boot, surely that has to be worth a go.

Wanted to get N'Zog in for this week, but with Huth's injury and Luiz getting subbed I may have to bring a defender in instead, as it stands I only have Walker, Hangeland and Simpson, none of whom have appealing fixtures... dont want to take a -4 as I'm protecting 2 slender leads at top of mini leagues!

Priority this week: a Pool mid or Nzog?

Besides, my defence is a mess (but I know I'm not alone there); Walker, Huth, Hangeland (Fulham tight at the back? yeah right), Luiz, RJ...

N'zog definitely, don't bother with the defence at this stage as cleansheets are so hard to come by.

    Hart (Begovic)
Luiz, Evra, R Johnson (Djourou) (Coleman)
VDV, Lampard (c), Silva, O'Hara (Modric)
    Bent, Odemwingie, (Carroll)

£0.0m in the bank, 1 free transfer.

What do you think to Modric (injury doubt) & Carroll (injury doubt and will almost certainly be on the bench at best) to Walcott & DJ Campbell?

I know my defence is a mess with Evra, Luiz, Djourou & Coleman not guaranteed to start, but can't see many clean sheets out there so concentrating on midfield/attack.

Don't want N'Zog as everyone else will have him and I'm chasing, and I think Walcott is due a big score...

1 - Man City have won only one of their last 15 matches v Spurs in the PL & have gained just 6 points from a possible 45 in this run. Omen?

    VDV might still do something...
