It was a case of déjà vu for Peter Crouch at Eastlands last night as the Spurs forward grabbed the winning goal to clinch a Champions League place for the second year running; unfortunately for Crouch, it was an own goal this time round, as his gaffe helped Roberto Mancini’s side end Tottenham’s slim hopes of a fourth-place finish. The result was a timely boost for Stoke City, too; City’s FA Cup final opponents are now ensured Europa League football next season. Here’s the notes from last night’s game…

Tottenham’s Injury Troubles Continue
It’s been a long season, and the injuries are taking their toll on Spurs right now; straight off the back of Gareth Bale’s season-ending ankle injury, Harry Redknapp suffered further misfortunes. The setbacks started before a ball had been kicked with Heurelho Gomes missing out with a back injury, allowing Carlo Cudicini to claim the keeper’s jersey. The Italian stopper duly put in a strong display, making several crucial saves that will give him every chance of retaining the role for Tottenham’s final two matches.

Elsewhere, Wilson Palacios recovered from a knee injury and came in to central midfield, as Redknapp moved Luka Modric wide left in a 4-4-1-1. The shift only lasted half an hour, though; Palacios limped off, with Modric back in his usual central berth as sub Steven Pienaar took up a flank role. William Gallas received treatment twice during the game but was eventually forced off with three minutes to go after heading a Patrick Viera effort off the line.

Having chased fourth place for so long, Spurs now face an uphill task to claim fifth. They are two points behind Liverpool and face a trip to Anfield this weekend, knowing a defeat would give Kenny Dalglish’s men an unassailable lead in the chase for a Europa League spot. Owners of Tottenham’s Fantasy assets will at least take comfort that Tottenham go into gameweek 37 still motivated to earn a result, despite last night’s defeat. Harry Redknapp gave us no doubt that his side remain focused as the season draws to a close…

“We’ll go to Liverpool and try to win and then try to beat Birmingham. Two wins and we’ll finish above Liverpool. That’s what we need to do.”

Carlos Tevez
Sidelined for the last three gameweeks, the Argentine came off the bench with seven minutes to go and looked his busy self, almost scoring on the final whistle. It’s a major boost for Roberto Mancini ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup Final with Stoke and with City just two points behind Arsenal, Tevez’s return will spearhead their chase for third place as they face up to (STK, bol) in the final two games. Should Tevez start at Wembley however, there will be real doubts as to whether Mancini will field his skipper in next Tuesday’s league clash.

Richards’ Return Causes Fantasy Woes
Micah Richards came back into the City XI, starting at right-back in a reshuffle that saw Pablo Zabaleta move to left-back. This proved a real source of frustration for owners of Aleksander Kolarov, as the Serbian dropped to the bench.

A bloody nose forced Zabeleta off after 57 minutes, with Kolarov emerging for the remainder. Despite City’s clean sheet, neither grabbed sufficient minutes to earn the points, giving them paltry returns over the double gameweek. The full-back rotation has proved costly for Fantasy Owners over the season; with 16 clean sheets, City clearly have defensive potential but while Joe Hart has 162 pts, Kolarov and Zabaleta have 150 between them.

City Rotation
Mancini’s lineup at Wembley will be a key guide for his teamsheet for gameweek 37’s league clash with Stoke three days later. While City remain motivated to claim third spot, it’s hard to imagine that Mancini will resist the temptation to rest players following the weekend showpiece. As mentioned, Tevez looks vulnerable should he be deployed for the bulk of Saturday’s game. Elsewhere we should expect further rotation at full-back, with Kolarov perhaps set to see action on Tuesday night should he be benched in the Final. Despite last night’s frustration then, his owners may still see the merits of holding him for the final two gameweeks.

David Silva and Yaya Toure are set to play their third match in seven days on Saturday – they both look candidates for a rest, with Shaun Wright-Phillips and Patrick Vieira the obvious replacements. Gareth Barry, who missed out again last night, remains a doubt for Saturday’s game – he is set to find out his fate today following a hamstring injury.

      Ohh too bad then.
So we both start with -4 vs -4. Lost out by 1 point.
Anyway I guess the better player went through, as he manage to hold on to his WC until now.
But he used his WC at the crappiest DGW, i guess to went out with small margin is satisfying enough.

Anyway, great leagues TM! I'll be joining again next year!

Sorry mate again. I agree about the timing of the wildcard. if the title was going to GW38 then it would have more value. he had to use it & it was his last chance. Pity you weren't ranked higher than him or else you would have gone through. I'll set the new rules out better so this situation doesn't arise again. Great run by you all the same & the luck of the draw was against you. I would blame the bonus point judges for not giving Baines 3 bps. Sturridge had enough chances to win it for you also.

Sorry, lost on last page, anyone?

Regardless of chasing/defending in min leagues, if everyone around you has RVP, do you this GW

    A. Captain him, so you at least gain double points.

    B. Accept you’re not going to make any gains having RVP, so captain someone else, e.g Adam, Lampard

Tricky couple of weeks coming up, I have Ya Ya/Silva/VDV/Rooney, all of who I don't want for 2 weeks, or even this week, with Spurs abject performance last night I really don't see them doing very well at Anfield, and hasn't Harry more or less said they are not interested in Europa? I thought he did on Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night anyway.

Silva and Ya Ya is another stumper too, I want to keep one but at least one of them will surely be rotated against Stoke. Rooney on the other hand will more than likely not play against Blackpool, so it makes more sense to replace him with a striker who will play the 2 games, so it's kindof like a single gameweek player OUT for a double gameweek player mentality for me, and a hit might be worth it, but for who? I want Drogba but will he get the last two games or will Ancelotti be tinkering in preparation for next season, possibly without Drogba.

The candidates IN are N'Zogbia/Lampard/Drogba/Suarez, how is everyone else fairing with the rotation/team motivation issue going into the last two weeks?

I'd leave Rooney in, for this week at least. As for City players that's a difficult call, I have Silva but will probably leave him due to lack of a screamingly urgent replacement waiting in the wings. I'm also sticking with VDV, his last fixture is pretty good and he can always pop up with something. Partly depends on your minileague situation IMO

Really JU?! What's wrong with keeping Rooney for this week, where he'll play, and then transferring him out before the final week. I like Rooney's chances this weekend.

I think getting rid of VDV has to be a priority ahead of getting rid of Yaya/Silva. I'm personally struggling to justify getting rid of any City boys before a home game with Stoke, because there's a *chance* that they'll be rested. With 3rd still up for grabs, there's no guarantee that Mancini will decide to rest his players. Hell, there's only two weeks of the season left, so there's nothing they need to be rested for!

If you think that Suarez will outscore Rooney this week, I'd probably make that change, as well as VDV > Lampard. Although I can't imagine that those transfers would help in catching JWF.

Ya, well, I just don't want to have to take Rooney out in the last week when it's a move that could very well pay off more this week, but I take your point. That being said, I have been expecting something out of Rooney for 4 weeks now, and to no avail, the problem is that Rooney doesn't HAVE to be the one to score this season, Chicharito is chipping in, Valencia is chipping in etc etc.

So Rooney was unlucky not to grab at least a goal on Sunday, if that continues I will be kicking myself for getting about 5 points from him in 4 weeks, decision time.

VDV I think is done for sure, I don't care if he has Birmingham last game of the season, Spurs looked wholly ineffective last night.

JWF is only 31 points ahead!

My point about JWF was that bringing in Lampard - who he presumably already has - isn't going to help catching him, but I don't personally you should place too much significance on what teams mini league rivals has. It's ultimately all about picking the side that you think will score the most points.

Is N'Zogbia on pens? Not feeling the love for him this GW and West Ham will SURELY put up a tough fight at Wigan, in what will probably be a tight scrappy low scoring affair.

As a gamble, how about a Wolves striker - Fletcher - to add to your candidates in list for the final 2 games?

You're right about Drogba though, as Ancelotti - regardless of whether he is manager or not- will tinker and I can see either Anelka or Torres starting ahead of Drogba. 😉

Pens will be Rodallega or Watson. The thing with N'Zogbia is that, if Wigan win, Bonus normally follows. He's also saved his good form for the end of the season - just in time for the summer transfer window.

I can't see why people are so eager to take Rooney out this week. Absolutely no doubt that the strongest team will play this weekend to wrap up the title, giving SAF a chance to rest them in the Blackpool game. Take him out next week, yes, but I wouldn't this week.

I've three City players, and I'm going to be keeping them. They're only two points behind Arsenal so if they win the last two games they've a chance of getting third (so automatic qualification) if Arsenal slip up. There's a chance some players will get rested, but it's worth the risk to keep imo.

Kolarov was on top going into the double gameweek. Had Richards failed to recover from injury he would have played both games and returned a clean sheet - I think it was a fair recommendation. I take comfort from the fact that there were more or less zero returns from defenders from the gameweek.

Yeah, to be fair I didn't envisage a City cleanie against Spurs or indeed over the gameweek - I wasn't really considering clean sheets for any defender going into the gameweek - Enrique against Birmingham was probably the best chance of that.

Yes, Man City got the goal and sat back and played some boring football.

City posed little threat with Dzeko looking like he hadn't played football before, Dawson played well at times, Cudicini made a few good saves, but it was more about City's ambition than Spurs defending that kept the score how it was.

Silva was okay to start but was quiet in the second half. VDV was okay, linked the play well in midfield, but didn't do much up front, not enough for me to justify keeping just for pens anyway.

Morning all, I could really do with some help with my team, I’m struggling to maintain a 20 point lead. With all the rotation threats I’m really not too sure on what transfer(s) to do this week. I was thinking of getting N’Zogbia in but really don’t know who to drop, so I suppose I should finally get rid of Kelly, but the defenders really don’t seem to be providing too many points.

How about Silva or VDV to N’zogbia and then Kelly to Vidic?

    My Team
    Foster, Begovic,
Kelly, R Johnson, Luiz, Huth, Dawson
    Yaya, Silva, Adam, VDV, O’Hara,
    Rooney, Drogba, RVP

Are you sure you want to drop both the City players before their game at home to Stoke. I think you should just get one of Nzogbia or Malouda, no need for a hit.

            Jarvis Zog Hitzleberger VDV Silva

Cheers man. Your defence is similar to mine - I'm worried about the status of Kolarov, Djourou, Luiz AND Huth.

I'd be tempted to transfer out Huth (even if he's not injured, he's got tough fixtures and FA Cup distraction), and VDV.

If you like Glen and can afford him, I'd bring him in, and I'd go for Maxi or Kuyt in for VDV. Kuyt if you want to play safe, Maxi if you fancy an upside risk.

Thanks for that, i suppose bringing in a defender you just have to be sure you'll pick him both weeks.

Like you i'm tempted to get rid of Huth.

                Thanks for the advice!

Guys need a bit of advise on my team:

    Foster (Begovic)
    Hughes Kolorov Luiz (Walker) (Kelly)
    Kuyt Adam Lampard Silva VdV
    RvP Odemwingie (Carroll)

    3.3M in the bank

Was wondering what you guys think would be the best transfer option is, was thinking to get rid of Kelly and then be able to have 5 playing defenders just in case Luiz and Kolorov don’t play. If so, who should I bring in for the last two games?

Or should I make a transfer in midfield or forwards?

I'd be tempted transfer out VDV. Your defence is ok and shutouts are unlikely this time of the season - invest in your front 8. Maxi or N'Zog could be good calls.

cheers I appreciate the response, waht about up-front was thinking about shifting out Carroll or should I leave him in for another week and try to bring in another midfielder for VDV?

Tricky one. I do think you should get rid of Carroll, but if you just transfer out VDV for Maxi/N'Zog/whoever, you can go 3-5-2 and leave the Carroll transfer til next week.
