Ben Foster begins our review of the Fantasy Football Scout team of the season.

The former United stopper arrived at St Andrews with the task of replacing Joe Hart whose heroics had previously kept the Birmingham goals conceded column in check in spectacular style. Alex McLeish’s capture of Foster was shrewd – despite the doubts surrounding his credentials at international level, on the domestic front, Foster had proved himself a superb goalkeeping prospect with shot-stopping skills to rival even the precocious talents of Hart.

Foster benefited early on from the resolute partnership of new-signing Roger Johnson and Scott Dann but, when this was disrupted by Dann’s injury in January, Foster’s importance to Birmingham’s bid for survival became even more apparent.

Ultimately however, not even his improbable reflexes could prevent Birmingham from being banished to the Championship on the final day.

The Statistics

Available for a sum of 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Foster was earmarked early in pre-season as a likely leading contender in our squads, as the acquisition of a cheap keepers remained a popular stance.

Hart was a key figure in shaping that strategy. Birmingham had kept 11 clean sheets in the previous season with Hart offering incredible value at just 4.0 in front of their back four. Birmingham and Foster struggled to match that this – two shut-outs in the opening eight matches was a shaky start, although Brum did rally to gather nine in total, with four in six games arriving between October and November, before injury ended Dann’s season.

Foster mainly relied on strong Save Point returns to supplement his tally and justify his inclusion in our squads. A total of 178 saves topped the FPL rankings and fetched Foster at least one Save Point in 32 of his 38 starts.

The high-point of his season was undoubtedly the 1-0 home win over Chelsea in November – Foster made 8 saves in total to deny Carlo Ancelotti’s fading force, with a maximum three Bonus Points completing an 11 point haul.

The Prospects

It seems inconceivable that Foster will remain in Birmingham’s relegated squad to ply his trade back in the Championship. Likely transfer destinations will materialise in the coming months; Tottenham, Aston Villa and West Brom are already being flagged up in the press.

Fantasy Managers will again be hoping that he’ll find his way to a club outside of the top six, hopefully ensuring that Foster remains at least a mid-price option to offer value again next season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

They'd get Enrique for half the price. £25m for a left back (unless you're Man City) is daft when there are equally as good players available for much less.

Surely it would be better to pay around £10-12m for a player who is already proven quality in the Premier League and then have another 15m or so to put towards a class winger?

I think its a done deal man a lot of sites reporting it. Fees are ridiculous we all know that Arsenal were going to pay 20mil for Reina and no one was batting an eyelid + De Gea's being bought for around £18mil yet that's a brilliant piece of market work by Alex? I know your gonna say that he's only 20 and whatever but I'm just saying that prices today are part and parcel

Generally, on here, FPL is the bread and butter -it may not have great prizes but it is worldwide, which does help make it great, I think- with our dedication to other games dependent on many factors.

However, we will be looking at all games (at least behind the scenes, and likely many if not most in front of house) over the coming weeks and months ahead of the next season.

I've in fact been doing some work on that this evening.

Andy, you might want to check out Ultimate Dream Teams. udt.co.za. They did the African Cup of Nations fantasy game and did a pl game this season (started in GW 13 or so). Closest to old CYKI. No subs and max transfers for the season, no more than 4 a gameweek. No bonus too of course. Premium on goal scoring defenders (10 points for a goal) Thanks to Jolean I won a new phone for Manager of the Month in May.

Apols to Private Eye readers who may already have seen this.

Piers "Morgan" Moran's predictions of the year:

-Man Utd to finish outside the top 4
    -Chelsea to win the league
-Liverpool to have a strong season under Hodgson
    -Mick McCarthy to be fired
-Capello to resign or be sacked before May
    -Mourinho to win Champions League
    -Arsenal to end trophy drought

It's been a busy evening of football in Europe tonight. Both the Swiss and Austrian championships finished this evening - and both went down to the wire.

FC Basel beat Luzern 3-0 to retain the Swiss Super League, holding off the challenge of FC Zürich by a point. FC St. Gallen were relegated after a final-day defeat, and AC Bellinzona will play second division Servette Geneva in the relegation play-offs.

In Austria, Sturm Graz beat Wacker Innsbruck to claim their first Bundesliga title for 12 years. Defending champions, the hideous Frankenstein club Red Bull Salzburg, won 4-2 at Austria Vienna to finish second.

And in Germany, Borussia Mönchengladbach will stay in the Bundesliga after beating VfL Bochum 2-1 on aggregate tonight in the relegation play-offs.

Yeah those are exactly my thoughts. He seems to excel in small spaces - which is of course great in any league - that are given more frequently in southern Europe than in England.

He also strikes me much as the player who does not take well to being kicked down too many times in one game. Can definitely see him doing a Robinho if he goes to England.

I thought last season jerome actually done quite well. Was handful for defences. This season he has been poor. That was birminghams downfall. No striker to stick the ball in the net. Can't understand why martins never got more game time. A proven goal scorer in his day.

I'm sure McLeish will want to keep Dann, Johnson & Ridgewell, but alot of teams will surely be looking to pick up the scraps following their demise. Dann will go to a much bigger club at some stage, assuming he returns fit & well. Now who's for a Zigic? Anyone..?

Locally they are saying that they are under no pressure to sell any of their players and it would take more than £15m to get Foster. I think eventually Foster will request to leave and they will have to sell him though, Johnson and Dann will stay I think.

            Supreme patience, Mak! 🙂

My goal was to win FPL and having researched the previous top 10 players I discovered that nearly all of them used less than 40 trades. This year, most of the top 10 seemed to have gone over 40.

My downfall is that I have been too conservative with transfers in a year which required more hits than normal through an increase in dgws and injuries. There were times when my gut instinct told me to take a hit but I kept my discipline. I need to take a long term view of hits like Chris McGurn highlighted in his interview the other day. When I buy a player, one of my rules is that I must get four good fixtures out of this player at the very least. This prevents swapping in and out, constant hits, etc.

If I can get this balance right, I'll go closer next year.

            How was your season? 🙂

Not the best. 😀 When I saw that I'm destined for a mediocre season towards the end,I lost control and took 7 straight hits in the last seven weeks. 🙁 Definitely won't be making the same mistakes next season. And good luck to you in your quest for the title. 🙂 August can't come soon enough.

Interesting that in your last 7 weeks when your took a weekly hit, that you achieved five green arrows!

However, for the rest of the season, a hit was mostly accompanied by a red arrow. 🙁

You made a very good start to the season, though! You obviously have the potential to succeed at this game so best of luck!

Def. I started off with Jussi + Foster and then dumped Jussi for Stockdale in gw24. Never bothered again and allways played Foster.

That's the problem with any defensive cover from Arsenal.

What's your feeling on the new season? Still advocating a 5 cheap defenders or Baines + 4 cheapish?

Up front? I kicked off last season with C Cole/Boselli and a bunch of big hitters in midfield. That went pear shape early on!

Baines is tempting. Dawson could be very good value too. A lot depends on the early fixtures.

One + 4 cheepies appeals quite a lot.

The cheap defenders will need some researching though. I just don't know the players at NOR, QPR and SWN.

I was going to go for a series Frank Lampard related names of names based on the titles of stories by H P Lovecraft:

                    The Lampard over Innsmouth

                    The Colour out of Lampard

Foster turned out ok , however the two cheap keeper strategy was a little hit and miss imo, depending on which two you ended up with.

For much of the season i went with Hart , think it was well worth the extra expense.

Hart kept cleenies but at a cost and only 4 ppg. Not sure he was good value to be honest.

However, on Metro, you could get Hart and Foster for peanuts and rotate throughout the season.

they were both good value, and it depends how u spent the money difference. if it went to a player warming ur bench then i dnt see the point.

hart's positive is that u know u wnt be hit with a zero score at anytime, as mancity are unlikely to take 4 goals in a game. it is better for ur nerves.

Don't know, but someone pointed out Foster will prob cost 6 mill if he moves to a top 5/6 club let's say Villa. So De Gea, although new to premierleague should at least be the same if not 6.5 mill.

I would rather get a "cheapish" keeper and spend the extra cash getting the Rooney's/Valencia's.

From F365's fan-review of the Man City squad:

        Aleksander Kolarov
As a text from a friend a few months ago stated: 'Kolarov has a bear at home. No cage, just bear. Bear is constantly terrified'. Wonderfully powerful shot but thas an annoying habit of shooting all the time and yet his attacking style compliments Silva's propensity to cut inside. Solid defender and will probably chip in with a goal or two eventually.

        LOL

with city looking for pure attacking midfielders and wingers, unlike yaya barry dejong milner, he might drop deeper and eventually lose his spot for a better defending full back

James McCarthy has the potential to be one of the most creative attacking midfielders in the league.

Henderson, Guerdioura, Hoilett and Marc Wilson (if classed as a defender) are some others I think will have big seasons and could become potential bargains.

senderos is unlikely to get inside the hangeland hughes partnership, unless hughes move wide (which he did couple of years ago)
gibbs is dependant on clichy's contract situation, however he will add more problems to solutions to arsenal defence anlthough his attacking potential is decent
                agree with rafa

glen johnson will be back next season, with lower price, and better CS prospoect, and the occasional assist/goal

no rotation for liverpool next season coz there will be no europe games
also i see rafael cenmenting RB spot for united, and odemwingee will be fail.

Completely disagree. He's had a solid first season for us. He's not the strongest, but he's hard in the tackle and he knows how to pick a pass which is a rarity for a Stoke defender.

I can see him becoming more important for us next season. Definately one to watch.

                It's a game of opinions I suppose.

Ultimately if he plays every game as a midfielder and is classed as a defender, the fact that he's terrible isn't relevant from a fantasy point of view. And certainly wouldn't stop me putting him in.

I don't him either but would look at him if he is classed as a defender but plays in midfield. Only worry would be that he could be dropped back into defence if injuries occur

Although thinking about it, his aimless 50 yard punts aren't going to get him by goals/assists anyway. So he may as well play in defence as midfield.
