When Neil Warnock began to build his QPR side around Adel Taarabat, the cock-sure Yorkshireman was taking a risk on the impetuous talents of a player who had been cast aside by Harry Redknapp – rarely a bad judge.

By Christmas the performances of Taarabt had illuminated the Championship, carried QPR to the summit and left Redknapp wondering if he’d be sacked by his employers for allowing such a player to leave the Lane.

Following such an outstanding six months, Taarabt was crowned the Football League’s Player of the Year in March. Whilst Warnock was pipped to the managerial accolade by Norwich’s Paul Lambert, his role in converting Taarabt from an inconsistent show-pony to a disciplined and devastating force, arguably deserved greater recognition.

QPR’s manager will now likely spend the summer using his powers of persuasion to keep Taarabt at Loftus Road. If he succeeds, Warnock must then sketch a blueprint that will again harness the Moroccan’s abilities. Pull that off and Taarabt has the potential to keep QPR afloat and provide us Fantasy Managers with returns that would threaten to overshadow this season’s contribution from Blackpool’s Charlie Adam.

The Statistics

With 19 goals and 16 assists in 43 starts for Rangers, Taarabt arrives in the Premier League with a Championship CV that surpasses any promoted player over the last few seasons. The aforementioned Adam came up last season with 17 goals and 11 assists to his name; he went on to provide superb value, particularly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game where his frequent haul of Bonus Points helped him end the season second in the midfielder scoring rankings.

Taarabt has the same degree of influence for QPR; there’s a similar dominance at set-pieces and, should QPR earn positive results, Bonus Points will surely come the Moroccan’s way. And yet, we’ve seen potential from such statistics fall flat in the past. Birmingham came up with Gary McSheffrey having contributed 13 goals and 18 assists in their promotion in 2006/07, only to bitterly disappoint on the Premier League stage.

A tally of 7 goals and 5 assists in 32 Championship starts whilst on loan at Rangers in 2009/10 offers a more sobering view of Taarabt’s productivity. However, this was during Jim Magilton’s tenure at Loftus Road – indication perhaps that Warnock’s ability to foster Taarabt’s skills in his formation will remain crucial to his Fantasy returns.

Before his arrival at QPR for two loan spells, Taarabt’s potential can only really be measured anecdotally. When Martin Jol captured the 17-year-old from Lens to bring him to Spurs in 2007 he proclaimed Taarabt as a “wizard†stating..

“On the ball I don’t think there’s another talent like him in Englandâ€

He arrived at White Hart Lane having drawn comparison to none other than Zinedine Zidane, albeit from his own agent – Rudy Raba…

“In France he is considered the new Zidane… He is exceptional, he is one of the most talented young players in France, perhaps the most talented.â€

By the start of the 2008/09 season however, Juande Ramos’ arrival at White Hart Lane saw Taarabt ignored. When Harry Redknapp took over the reins, the Morrocan was at least brought in from the cold and handed back his squad number, but he was later allowed to leave for a first loan spell at Loftus Road in 2009.

Having once demand £4.5 million for his services, Redknapp eventually allowed Taarabt to leave on a permanent deal for a fee reported to be just £1 million. Taarabt’s progress from that point has justified at least some of the hype lavished upon him; it has certainly made a mockery of Redknapp’s evaluation.

The Prospects

Harry is very rarely so wrong on a player however and Fantasy managers will approach Taarabt with a degree of caution given the jump in class ahead of him.

Premier League managers will be wary of the devastation he can cause but at the same time aware that, when tested, Taarabt’s temperament could be a flaw.

Defenders will welcome him with biting tackles, midfield enforcers won’t allow him space to unravel his repertoire of flicks and showboating antics. The stance taken up by the top level referee’s will also be crucial – react badly early on to some of the inevitable treatment coming his way and sympathy for Taarabt’s frequent flailing falls to the deck could be ignored or worse still, met with cards.

These reservations could all be academic should Taarabt seek a move – that’s still a very real prospect. When asked whether he would stay at Loftus Road following promotion, Taarabt offered little reassurance to Rangers faithful…

“I don’t know, I did everything for the club this year. The manager told me ‘It is up to you, if you want to go I won’t stop you because you did everything for me, but I would be very happy if you stay for me’. So he gave me a choice. So I have the summer to think about it.”

Should Taarabt find his way to a bigger club, his Fantasy potential would likely take a significant dent. The Moroccan conducts matters at QPR; manufacture a move and he’s likely to end up as a flamboyant soloist drowned out by a vast orchestra of talent.

Taarabt and his agent will wait on interest from Spain or the Premier League’s elite then; us Fantasy managers also need to bide our time. QPR’s magician is a hugely tempting prospect should he remain under Warnock’s wing and, if his manager can again build a system around him to protect and allow his talents to come to the fore, then the rewards look rich indeed.

The FPL will be toying with his pricing – considering the impact of Charlie Adam and attempting to anticipate whether Taarabt can match or even better his showing. A similar initial value of just 5.0 seems inconceivable – something around 6.5 would seem more likely. Even with such a valuation and with his abilities unproven in the top-flight, Taarabt would remain a “most-wanted†target.

While the transfer circus has yet to escalate, with the City chequebook still to be unfurled, Taarabt’s arrival in the Premier League is already providing ample excitement. Big things are expected – and with a price tag that should make him instantly available as an asset, Fantasy managers are amongst those eagerly anticipating his appearance at the top level.

I’d go a bit further than suggesting they were ‘good chances’. He would score those in his sleep in his ridiculously good pomp.

He had some balls to go out there looking like the Fat Controller. However, his belly was not the most shocking thing on display. Robinho’s hairstyle was.

Keane could be heading for Fulham, could be a good shout if cheap again this year which he should. With Johnson and Zamora injury prone he could find himself in the starting 11. Jol likes him too.

He should be starting every week for a Premiership side imo.

I feel really sorry for him, he gets loaned all over the place and never starts consistently for anyone besides Ireland and look what he does there.

If Fulham just start him 5 games in a row regardless of results I think his form will skyrocket.

If it hasn't happened yet, it won't happen IMO. The international record makes me think he needs to be a big fish, unless its all about him he doesn't like it, comes across as having a poor attitude to me.

He averaged a goal every 2.5 games at spurs, not a bad record and he created a lot of goals for them, he has lost a little bit of pace the last couple of years i think, but he still knows where the net is.

If Nasri wants to leave there isn't that much that can be done. Besides, SAF and Arsene's relationship has improved a lot over the last few years.

Anyway, you can't really blame him for wanting to go- Arsenal don't look like a trophy winning team atm.

Loool, Ap, saw your comment yesterday, "Interesting how both Smalling and Jones rejected Wenger, must be the great team spirit they have over there"

Aaron Ramsey ring any bells? Works both ways pal.

I wonder who made the right choice. Smalling: 1 league winners medal. Ramsey: lifetime supply of coissants. No wonder Jones chose Utd and Nasri wants in too 😛

What's that got to do with anything? Your point was that Arsenal can't compete with Utd, even though Ramsey choose us over you and Chamberlain said he would prefer to join Arsenal.

Im sure Obertan, Tosic and other bright talents are delighted they joined Utd aswell...

If you are a young English/British player i think most would prefer to join United or Liverpool over Arsenal IMO. That is simply because of the culture and characters at the club

    Foster 5m (Villa) Begovic 4.5m
    Kompany 6.5m Enrique(Liv) 5.5m Baird 5m Bardsley 5m Walker (QPR) 4.5m
    Sneijder (MU/Chelsea) 11m Nzog (Villa/Sun) 6.5m Taarabt 5.5m Walcott 7.5m O Hara 5.5m
    RVP 11.5m Suarez 10.5m Sturridge (Bol) 6m

meh! first check out the difference between 'good' and 'great'...he is a good young player but he will be a good signing just like jones,young...we need a creative mid like modric or sneijder rather than him atm...i don't think he is capable of playing in a 4-4-2 formation and with the strikers we have we will usually play 4-4-2 in the pl games ...he will be a handy player if we play 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 in europe...

p.s. if u have such a 'great squad' in ur words then why u can't cope when rvp/fab is injured ?!?!

Nasri is one of the most creative midfielders around. Whatever, i can't be bothered to argue anymore, you carry on believing AP. I hope he doesn't, but if he does go to you, i can't wait till you start praising him next season.

"p.s. if u have such a ‘great squad’ in ur words then why u can’t cope when rvp/fab is injured?!?" Maybe for the same reason you would struggle if Rooney & Vidic were injured, or Terry and Drogba for Chelsea, or Messi and Iniesta for Barca etc...

p.s. we showed this season we can cope without roo and rio if they get injured for a month or two...iniesta was injured for large part in 2010 that doesn't stop barca from reaching champs lg semis and winning their league...if u have a decent squad u can cope with ur best players missing for few weeks/months but calling ur squad a great one is just rubbish...

Hernandez has scored against Chelsea (twice) and liverpool this season, and I still wouldn't say he's a proven player. (I like how you also left out the part about city having ten men when Nasri scored). Now I'm not saying Nasri isn't a promising prospect, but he has not proved himself as consistently as modric has.

Oh and I was talking about the second half here:

The Utd fans on here maybe. Modric is a tidy player, but he is not capable of doing things like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DAfRIratU8

                    One goal doesn't make a player 😕

My point is that while nasri has only had one half of a season where he has shown true class. IMO, that isn't enough for potentially Scholes' replacement...

If he goes there, and i really hope he doesn't, im predicting that he will be their best player and be up there in contention for the end of season awards. At Arsenal, we've slowed down our play too much, Utd counter attack and are ruthless, that suits his style more.

True, i would. Main reason was because i'd know almost which of the 4 teams would be in the final, from the first lot of games, so i can transfer the other ones out and fill it up with english and spanish players.

Also leaving enough money to get more of them during the semis.

I think england vs spain will be 1-1 so not much fantasy options for that match specifically

If one or both do leave however, I don't think they should be replaced with similar players (partly because there aren't many similar players out there who can lace their boots). The money should be used on a major squad overhaul which involves a second world-class striker, a world-class centre mid and for god's sake some defenders!

It might be time to abandon the 'attractive' football that hasn't been working. Just a thought.

Yeah something like that, it would be important to have two holding mids. One who presses the ball like Diarra & Flamini would and one who sweeps up and has a calming influence like Gilberto. Not sure who is available though. It doesn't matter anyway because Fabregas and Nasri are staying 🙂

With his consistency, he's clearly one of the top FPL stikers, the small saving is consolation for his injuries. In a season where he didn't spend a significant amount of time on the sideline, and scored consistently , you can expect him to at least match his last price.

I could understand if Drogba went down a touch, but Torres stock has dropped massively.

      Torres 4.5
      Suarez 10
      Hernandez 9.5
      Rooneh 11
      Bent 9
      Carroll 10

I dunno, something like that I suppose.

That's more like it. I reckon Torres will be about 8.5 - 9.5, Hernandez 9.5 - 10, and the rest I pretty much agree.

Can't wait to find out how much Odem will cost 🙠Probably 8.5

          Roo 11.0
          Bent 9.0
          Carroll 9.5

Look at the way Drogba's price varied in past seasons Soop. FPL generally only change prices in very small incriments for established players.

hmm... He'll be overpriced then. He stared at 11.5 this year, down from iirc 12 the previous season.

Not neccesarily overpriced. If he gets his sh1t together he could be decent value again. I doubt he's going to come in as a bargain though.....

Barcelona have taken the unusual step of announcing their summer transfer budget will be "45 million euros for new signings, plus money that may be obtained from sales". Source: Sky Sports.
Difficult to see Fabs moving based on that.

I agree. He is one of a few players where pre season will be key to helping assess his fantasy prospects.

I already know that bent will be good value at pretty much anything below 8.5m. A goal every other game at least, plus the occasional 15 pt week.

He's an annoying player to have.

          2,2,2,2,13,2,2,2,13!

Probably just me though, I had him benched for his two 13 point hauls 🙂

              Maybe 4-2-3-1 with:

              Albrighton__N'Zogbia__Downing
              ___________Bent______________

(Assuming they keep Downing away from Liverpool)

He is unproven; on the Lille bench for half the season, he has moments of brilliance but is very often caught sleeping for long periods - a very gifted player though, but ARS can not replace Nasri/Fab with him. Just one for the future
