The Championship play-off final; the richest club game in the world and the last chance for Fantasy managers to weigh up the promoted clubs for potential diamonds, with the top-flight performances of Blackpool’s Charlie Adam -finishing second-top scorer in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2010/11- setting the standard to follow. With a hat-trick in Swansea’s 4-2 win over Reading, Scott Sinclair guaranteed his club a £90m windfall and announced himself on our Fantasy radars for the upcoming Premier League campaign as a definite “one to watch”.

Snapped up by Brendan Rodgers last summer, the past season has seen the twenty-two year old winger establish himself in a starting XI for the first time in his career and Swansea have reaped the benefits, with Rodgers’ expansive passing game affording Sinclair the stage to flourish. Having spent time under Rodgers at both youth and reserve level while at Stamford Bridge, Sinclair acknowledged his manager’s part in his successful campaign:

“Leaving Chelsea was the best decision I ever made as I’m finally playing every weekend, showing everyone what I can do. Last summer, I could have gone on loan again but I’d had enough of that…I had the chance to sign for another Premier League club but decided it was best to join a manager who knows me and gave me confidence. Brendan Rodgers was the main reason I signed for Swansea as we knew each other when he was reserve-team manager at Chelsea.”

The Statistics

Sinclair was something of a prodigious talent, joining Bristol Rovers at the age of nine before making his debut aged fifteen. After just 2 appearances for the club, he was snapped up by Chelsea in 2005 but spent the next few seasons being farmed out on loan by a variety of Blues bosses.

His nomadic existence spanned to loan spells at six different clubs, including a stint at Wigan a couple of seasons back, but Sinclair failed to settle wherever he ended up and made a total 65 appearances on loan, scoring just 6 goals. Back he went to Chelsea last summer but this time the club decided to cash in on his services and Sinclair left without ever being given a chance at Stamford Bridge; he played just 5 games, failing to score a single goal.

Swansea paid an initial £500K to land the winger, in a three-year deal which may rise to £1m, dependant on the player’s performances. With 22 goals and 3 assists last term, however, Sinclair has already made something of a mockery of the price tag.

The Prospects

Swansea’s attacking game under Rodgers proves more fruitful at home, with 41 of their 69 goals coming at the Liberty Stadium last term, just under 2 goals per home game. The system clearly suits Sinclair’s pace and trickery out wide; he was the club’s top-scorer in the Championship and, with penalty-kick duties in the bag, will be high on Fantasy radars as potential bargain material.

Up against superior defences this time round it will be interesting to see how Sinclair copes, though after the win over Reading, Rodgers- mirroring the ethos of Ian Holloway upon Blackpool’s promotion the previous season- promised to forge ahead with the style of football that has drawn the Swans plenty plaudits:

“We’re going to places like Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge so it will be tough, but we’ll try to maintain the way we play. We said before this game we must maintain the identity of the team under pressure, with millions watching. You’ve seen a clear demonstration of how we play today.”

Blackpool‘s approach, while ultimately culminating in relegation on the final day of the season, saw Holloway’s men score 55 goals, the same number as fifth-placed Spurs and while their defenders were a Fantasy no-no, the Seasiders’ goal scoring feats meant the likes of DJ Campbell joined Adam as a viable FPL option.

Sinclair is a guaranteed starter for Swansea; there won’t be any threat of rotation hanging over his head, though fatigue saw him rested by Rodgers for a couple of games towards end of last season. He should be priced around the 5.0 to 5.5 bracket and will no doubt be the subject of plenty interest come the start of the campaign, more so if this Friday’s Premier League 2011/12 presents a kind beginning for the Welsh side.

    He's certainly on my radar.

Could be a good early differential to Taarabt, if his fixtures are kinder.

Depending on fixtures of course, would you have both Taarabt and Sinclair? I'm considering it, especially if it enables more cash for RVP, Bent and Suarez up front. 😉

Yeah, it'd be daft not to. I’ll be picking both [and possibly even Hoolihan as well] with a view to loading up on as many expensive big hitters as possible [to the extent that there are going to be any true big hitters next season with Gerrard, Drogba, and Fat Frank all creaking towards their footballing old age, Torres seemingly useless, Tevez & Cesc sulking, and Nani/Valencia/Young looking [at this stage] vulnerable to rotation…

The key question over Sinclair is whether he is counted as a Midfielder or Striker.
He's Young/Walcott ish in my views so I'd say MF but could be wrong.

With so many options for the 3 strikers I won't consider him if he's a striker.

Young was in fact an [FPL] striker just a few seasons ago so...

It could happen. Were he to get the harsh side of the coin it would definitely diminish interest that's for sure.

Villa are going down the toilet so I think Bent can probably be ruled out. Torres, lol.

We're MAYBE signing some kid from internacional so I wouldn't invest heavily.

K Davies back as the top man, Carroll fully fit, Odemwingie from the get go, Gyan leading the line, DJ Campbell maybe back in the prem... there could be some good budget about.

            Oh, and you forgot Tevez.

I assume Tevez is leaving in the summer.
I still think Bent will bang in the goals even if Villa go tits up but would be fixture dependent.
Torres is still a good player and if Drogs leaves/Modric joins I could see them linking up well.

Odem will be too dear imo. Gyan is a good shout, I think Ba will do well at Newcastle.

Goose, maybe £10m is a little of an exaggeration but if we were offered £25m then i would definitely go for it. He just doesnt fit the style we play. We need to get Lukaku and then Aguero and another winger and we will be sorted (with Sturridge back!)

He doesn't fit Chelsea's current style, but isn't that why he was bought...they're intending to change their tune next season? Chelsea were just forced into a quicker purchase than they wanted, the plan wasn't to buy him midseason.

I don't think you've really played to his style tho either and considering his cost you probably should be. I think if u signed Modric then a midfield 3 of him Lampard & Ramieres with Torres flanked by two proper wide men would be an awesome attack, surprised your not going for Sanchez or someone like that.

Struggling to find a decent cheap 3rd attacker so sticking with yarmolenko. Already got innocent smoothie.

So decided to use the cash to upgrade my second keeper so i have a starting gk in each group, then hope my defence pulls out a cleanie or less likely an assist so that the swap of yarmolenko isn't needed. Keepers would be Andersen or Gutor, then Vaclík. 4 cerain defenders starting.

Other option is to downgrade defence and keepers to as cheap bench fodder, leaving 3 certain starters at back and spend 7.1m on a striker Voronkov, Sinclair or Sigthórsson for a one game gamble.

What you guys reckon? option A or B?

No point getting an Iceland player in now, unless you haven't used WC yet, and even then there are better options.

Waste 1/2 free transfers to get him in, he'll probably be garbage anyway
Waste 1/6 free transfers to ship him out the matchday after

Not sure on budget but Jorgensen could be a good shout to at least get through to semis without being so expensive.

Tee hee 1: Michael Ballack will remain stranded on 98 caps for Germany after national coach Joachim Löw announced today that he's planning without him for the future. Good.

Tee hee 2: Liverpool are so desperate to get rid of Sotirios Kyrgiakos that I'm hearing that they've offered him on a free transfer to Hamburger SV. HSV refused on the grounds that:
    1) they couldn't afford his wages
    2) Kyrgiakos is already 31 years old
    3) they've seen him play for Liverpool.

I'm not saying you have to give Drogba but to make the deal more enticing to us you may have to.
He's under contract and happy at Spurs it's Chelseas's job to make the deal, he's not a can of beans you can't "just buy him".

everyone has their price and Tottenham are a selling club. £35m buys him.

Keep Drogba, if we are going to sell him lets sell him to Italy or Spain. Spurs need strikers, they have loads of CMs so why would chelsea make you stronger. doesnt make sense.

To be honest i would prefer Sneijder to Modric, Modric doesnt score enough goals/get enough assists.

apologies. I guess I am just annoyed at what is happening at chelsea as it seems like it is obvious what we need.

I am also a huge Drogba fan and dont want to see him leave.

We are in silly season too and every player seems to be linked with chelsea yet we dont even have a manager!

                  🙂

Drogba is a class act and I can see why you would rather lose him abroad than to another PL club. I can definitely see him deciding to move on now that Torres is probably going to be #1.

Who do you want as new manager?

In a perfect world Hiddink with Zola as assistant. then Hiddink to move upstairs for Zola in 1-2 seasons.

I know we need to move on from Jose's team (which is what is still basically is!) but I still think Drogba is class and would not want to see him at another prem club. We should have bought a younger version of Drogba (eg Lukaku) and brought him through gradually over next season or 2. We also have quality cover in Sturridge but we need creativity from midfield.

Yeah it's sadly true, £35 mil will get him. Depends on what Drogs wants to do as well.
Buying a player when you have no manager is ludicrous and a clear indication of what the bosses job is whoever does take it.

It will (everyone seems to think) be Hiddink and he is in regular close contact with the club and has been ever since he left after the cup final 2 years ago so you would hope that he has drawn up a list of players to target.

So where's a good place to start the season? At home to a lower mid table side often leads to a solid start. But you certainly don't want to be playing any of the promoted teams, who tend to be playing on adrenaline. Even Derby came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 on the opening day during 'that' season.

Man United, Everton and Stoke are often slow starters. Wouldn't mind Man City at home; hopefully their spending will disrupt their team for the first few games.

I guess from a balance sort of thing for all teams it would be more interesting but we would lose out on a lot of talent and the prem wouldn't be the same as it is now if a salary cap was introduced.

The only way a salary cap works is if it's across the whole of the sport

Absolutely the Prem wouldn't be the same as it is now, that's what we're aiming for. I understand your point about it being introduced across the whole sport and it is a tricky one to solve. Surely all the major leagues must agree that the situation is laughable at the moment

What they say and what they want is different though. I can't see the top clubs agreeing on a cap, unless the cap is set fairly high. Otherwise it would be like rugby, I don't know a great deal about it but it seems the english teams lost a fair few players to French clubs who don't have a cap

I would honestly forgo a drop in quality for a bit more excitment. Let the foreign lads go and play in Russia or wherever. If Spain, Italy, France and Germany agreed to it you'd be half way there. Other countries would follow suit imo and even if there were rogue nations who refused to co-operate you simply stop them competing in European/UEFA competitions. Let them pay their massive wages in their own league.

A salary cap would just mean the Glazers, Venky's etc would take even more money out of the game.

You could make it a % of turnover, which I think they do in the lower leagues, but then Utd would always get the best players, and Wigan would be f*cked. So not such a bad idea...

That would be great, but I can't see the Premier League (which is basically run by the clubs) going for it.

If you wanted to do it across the whole sport, presumably it would be administered and enforced by those bastions of fair play and incorruptibility, er, FIFA.

Just speaking from a Blackburn experience here but there is no way that a trip to Sunderland, West Brom, Newcastle or Bolton is harder than a game at Ewood Park. My opinion of course but we barely conceded at Ewood last season. Think only the Champs League chasers were tighter. Anyway.... good work
