Since the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti at the end of last season, speculation had been rife over who would take charge at Chelsea with Gus Hiddink, Mark Hughes and Harry Redknapp all strongly linked with the Stamford Bridge managerial vacancy. In the end, there was something of an inevitability about the appointment of André Villas-Boas on a three-year deal as the new Blues boss, with the man described by Jose Mourinho as “my eyes and ears” returning to take the reins as Roman Abramovich’s seventh manager since the Russian acquired the club.

As manager of Porto last season, Villas-Boas has shown he is not afraid to tread the same path as his mentors Mourinho or Sir Bobby Robson, the man who gave him a start in youth coaching at the age of 16. While his triumphs exceeded both expectations and the respective records of his more illustrious predecessors, the spotlight will never have shone so brightly on Villas-Boas as it will this upcoming season and his capabilities shall be tested to the full in the harsh glare of the Premier League.

Tactics

The Christmas tree and the diamond have been confined to the Stamford Bridge dustbin; it’s 4-3-3 all the way for the new boss. Villas-Boas has a tendency to play inverted wingers up front, with left-footed Hulk, stationed on the right, grabbing 16 assists in addition to his 23 goals for Porto last season.

This works well when the team are in the “attacking phase”; both full-backs can push on into the space vacated and the deepest lying midfielder drops alongside the centre-backs, as the shape resembles a 3-4-3. It’s a fundamental difference to Mourinho’s take on the formation and an approach that brought Villas-Boas’ Porto 145 goals in 58 games, along with the Europa League and Portuguese domestic double. Defending, the front wide men pull back as the formation becomes 4-1-4-1.

How might this translate to Fantasy Premier League? Porto full-back Alvaro Pereira picking up 5 assists in 21 games last term, only one less than the two most-used central midfielders, Moutinho and Belluschi; with license to go forward, this bodes well for the attacking returns of Ashley Cole next season.

In terms of goals, Porto’s front three were responsible for 54 of the side’s 73 in the league last season, an indication of both their ruthlessness and direct play. Having splashed out £50m on Fernando Torres, Abramovich will surely be keen for the Spaniard to spearhead the attack next season, with question marks raised against the likelihood of Drogba’s role come August. A move for Porto’s star striker Falcao -given the club will play with a lone forward- would therefore come as something of a surprise.

In midfield, plenty of industry and battle is a must-have as a link between back and front, though Chelsea are lacking a Moutinho, a real midfield schemer and playmaker type, and it’s perhaps understandable why a move for Luka Modric has already been made.

Dressing Room

Unlike most of the last few Chelsea managers, Villas-Boas has the distinct advantage of arriving in a league he is already very familiar with; previously part of the Mourinho regime for three years, his job involved compiling Opponent Observation Department (OOD) reports, preparing meticulously-detailed dossiers on other teams and his attention to detail is legendary; he holds special 30-minute tactical teach-ins the day after each match in addition to sessions after every training session.

Having therefore already been part of the same environment in a far lesser role, it’ll be intriguing to see how Villas-Boas is accepted by the players. Previous bosses such as Phil Scolari have cited dressing room unrest as a disruptive matter and, in the last couple of weeks, Salomon Kalou has admitted certain players’ egos proved debilitating in last season’s run-in.

Similar to Mourinho, though, Villas-Boas is a master in instilling great team spirit amongst his players and will be keen to iron out any dressing room differences. Porto forward Silvestre Varela had this to say regarding team morale at Porto:

“He brought an enormous will to win to our team and fostered a great spirit of sacrifice among all of us. He’s a coach who is close to the players and talks a lot with us. He’s always interested in knowing our opinion about every matter and gives freedom to the players.”

The Porto keeper Beto hailed his manager’s speech on the eve of the Europa Cup Final:

It was so moving it brought tears to my eyes. Every player left that room sure we would beat Braga.

Upon arriving at Porto last season, Villas-Boas showed a ruthless streak in ridding the club of possibly their two most influential players, Raul Meireles and Bruno Alves; he is clearly not afraid of making bold decisions and the Stamford Bridge departures over the next couple of months may well be as intriguing as any new arrivals.

Doesn't appear to bode well for Gordon injury wise. Wouldn't have thought they'd splash out £9m on a keeper to have him on the bench so would assume Sunderland none too hopeful on his injury clearing up.

Oh and Gordon is not injury prone. He got a broken bone after Defoe kciked the crap out of his wrist. Aslong as he avoids such collisions, as with any Huamn being, he'll be fine.

For anyone working on their own forecast tools, or ticker rankings (like you MMW), and wondering how to use the goals scored and conceded stats for the promoted sides, given that they were playing in the Championship rather than the Premiership when they scored their goals.

Looking at last season’s three promoted teams, surprisingly their average goals scored in the Prem are about 80% of what they scored in the Championship. This applies for home and away. Really surprising how consistent this number is.

Goals conceded varies a bit more: at home, it ranges from 173% to 251% (average 209% more goals conceded) and away ranges between 138% and 184% (average of 162% more goals conceded).

    Geektastic.

Nah, I've taken the matches played into account when I calculate the original average for goals scored or conceded.

So ranking the current 20 teams by average goals scored at home last season, without this adjustment Norwich, QPR and Swansea are ranked 2,3 and 5, which is clearly too high for predicting this season's returns.

With this adjustment applied, they get ranked 4, 6 and 10, which may still be a bit too generous, but that adjustment would have accurately predicted the results for Blackpool, WBA and Newcastle.

I think Gordon will leave. Which would leave Westwood as number 1. Plenty of time to find out the answer to that anyway. And yeah Sunderland and newcastle never both play home or away the same weekend - infact that's the case with most local teams I believe.

The first of lifes little dreams to blow up is when you realise that lads younger than you are playing football for England. Now there is a premier league manager the same age as me.
Fecking hell it's a little depressing.
I think he'll do well though given time, shame a certain Jamsie P is being molested by hyenas in darkest Africa. Would like to see his thoughts, I imagine he would be pretty pleased.

Possibly yes, United might need a season to settle the new boys in, still a formidable side and would still be the ones I'd tip to win it.
IF Chelsea can get a more creative midfielder in to feed through balls to Torres, and if they manage to get players like Falcao and Hulk from Porto, possibly a few more quality players in then they could be a real threat to United. They need to clear out some of their dead wood with huge egos and create a youthful more harmonious squad. Not everyone will agree but I believe Drogba, Anelka, Kalou, Lampard, and perhaps even Essien and Terry should go. The latter two are still good players, and could do another season at Chelsea. I'd look to get rid of the overbearing and ageing Terry, the creatively limited Lampard and would assess Essiens hunger for the club after he was so poor last season (by his own standards).

Note to FPL managers: Leicester have signed a right-back.

Okay, this seems like non-news (and was probably inevitable), but Kyle Naughton won't be coming here and if a Premier League team -QPR being the obvious candidates- snap him up...

    Put him in your team.

He's very good. Well, you know, he's not very good otherwise he'd not be able for sale - but he's good.

My joint favourite (because I'm still 8 really, I can't split a choice) City player last year. Almost hope he moves just so I can sign him.

Walker is good... but I honestly do think Naughton is better.

He's slightly worse at attacking (better shot though), but more proficient at defending.

I'm aware of this news as I work with numerous Huddesfield season ticket holders who are pretty gutted to lose Pelts, think from the sounds of it youve got a good player, are u quietly confident on a good season coming up? Shame we don't see u on here as much as back in the day Andy, same goes about a few actually.

I can't profess to knowing anything about Peltier to be honest, but from what little I've been told I'm "okay with it".

Confident of a good season? Yeah, I guess. We probably should make top six a bare minimum but we still need a few signings (right back, centre-back, striker, wide forward, goalie confirmed) first and to see if they fit before I can gauge us. We're going to be labelled up there with West Ham though I guess.

Definitely think we seriously can hope to get auto promotion... definitely think we could still end up 8th or so.

The guys who said about him are pretty knowledgable, the last player they said who was real quality at their place was the man in my gravatar (Martin Kelly) and they were right about him.

From my limited championship knowledge I think you'll be in the mix towards the end of the season.

Sorry to hear that, was made redundant myself in 2009 and just went self employed and then off to Oz working for a bit. It's not the end of the world by any means, if you can afford it slouch about for a couple of weeks and of possible think creatively about if you could start your own business. Best possible time to do so. Yes its a chronic recession but there are tons of grants etc to help start one up, if no-one else will give you a job then create one for yourself.

Redundancy equally got me my best score in 09/10. January to May that year I had my life in my own hands... I got something like 17/18 green arrows and rose from 200k to 3k - and got a job at Fantasy Football Scout (note to all, do no expect jobs here!).

My wife got made redundant 2 years ago and we decided she'd stay home and look after our daughter who was 2 at the time (our son was 4 but was in School all day by then) rather than end up spending a load of money on childcare.

    Lagrima

(I kept the label!)...........Pretty expensive but I would get a case of it for a decent discount.

Vermaelen at left back would make sense if Wenger's on the hunt for another centre back. That allows Koscielny to continue without being left out just because Arsenal need some more tall guys.

He also like to charge forward a fair bit. As the David Luiz, it's highly entertaining to watch, but probably isn't the best thing for a centre back to be doing.

He's quick, intelligent and good at both ends of the pitch. Vermaelen at full-back does make sense.

Having said all that, He's never, ever played there for Arsenal before.

I dunno. I suggested it on TFPL a while back and someone said what I told you, I thought he wouldve been well suited for left back though.

Maybe cumbersome would be better description. Cant see him being the most agile on turn as would be needed in attacking left back.

But if he was as well suited as we thought Wenger would have surely given him 1 or 2 games there considering a some point.

Physically far more suited to the middle for me.

he's never really had the chance. In Vermaelen's only season at Arsenal (playing-wise) the squad was threadbare pretty much all the time.

There was a spell when Traore was playing at full-back, but moving Vermaelen out there would have meant needing to play Silvestre in the centre.

oh i agree with you there that he's more suited to cb obviously, just think he could do a shift at lb, aka the graveyard/agger shift. but yeah not the ideal option, but an option

That would leave Gibbs to occasionally cover left back. Seems our options are between Cahill (has one more year left on his contract apparently, haven't cross referenced this) or Samba. I'd happily have both myself.

Koscielny had a good first season in the Premiership. Yes, he made mistakes, but he's young & still learning. Many forget that.

I'd rather have someone like Hummels or Sahko.

If you ignore the transfer fee, I think I'd (begrudgingly) rather have Cahill (or him and Samba). At least Cahill's got 3 more years to improve.

Perhaps. However it's also true. Arsenal need a defender to take charge, put themselves in harms way. Vermaelen was injured for the majority of last season. His efforts were badly missed.

They've also got to be good enough for a team with title aspirations. I don't think either of those two are.

We definitely need a big, powerful centre back with a more commanding presence. Considering Sahko was first made PSG captain as a teenager, he'd fit the bill perfectly.

Ya sahko is a good shout but would cost alot.

I think you are underestimating Samba. Adams, Keown werent the most elegate men on the ball either.

Samba is an obvious leader too.

True about Samba being a leader.

I still think he's too sluggish and not good enough on the ball. Squillaci is of a similar mould (if less able), and struggles no end in holding the defensive line and playing the ball out of defence.

serious question, does young's signing mean the end of hernandez and rooney? will he go with rooney as the lone striker (young in behind centrally) in order to try and fill the central creative void that way? would make berbatov less necessary as cover seeing as they'd have hernandez as cover. would also mean being able to play valencia and nani every time

      basically this:

      ------------------ carrick/fletch --- ando/giggs -----------------
      - valencia ---------------------- young ------------------- nani -
      ---------------------------- rooney -----------------------------

      hernandez the impact sub.
      throwing it out there?

I would imagine SAF will use Young in the hole behind Rooney for the first month or two while he gives Henandez a rest, using Nani/Valencia/Giggs/Park on the wings.

      After that, it's anyone's guess.

Berbatov does look surpluss to requirements, especially giving Owen a contract extension and Wellbeck there too for back up.

Fergie loves the Roonandez partnership, he's not going to break it up. I think that Young, Valencia and Nani will compete for the two wing spots and if Hernandez/Rooney get injured Young will fill in the gaps.

Yep. Im happy with the signing, better set piece potential and more squad competition as well as it meaning we'll have a stronger option to come off the bench while still being able to start the game with 2 attacking wingers.
